But now Williams is gone, and in his place is Mark Turgeon, a competent X’s and O’s teacher whose lack of personality limits him as a recruiter. And Turgeon recognizes his limitations and so has spent his first days as the head man at Maryland attempting to compensate for them – he retained Gary Williams’ best recruiting assistant, and then went in search of a great recruiter to add to his staff. And so his eyes turned to Manhattan, Kansas, and focused on a man who had leapt a few years earlier from fringe mid-major bench guy to the highest paid assistant coach in the country precisely because of his relationship with one AAU program – the DC Assault.
