Old News But Great Sight To See

So there I was, wrapping up my third year at FSU. I take academics seriously and I was on my final final. It was a nice class: "The Anthropology of Food". It was an intro-level course and I didn't think much of it. Here I am a serious Anthropology student, I know the professors, and I felt like I was wasting my time with a class full of sorority girls, frat guys, and football players. The past two years, these classes are the classes where football players sleep or make jokes in the back. I'm not sure what did it but this was different. I must say as much of a fan I am of FSU football I completely underestimated the character of Bert Reed. He was respectful and had a great attitude of the class. He loved the material and always treated the professor with respect. What really hit me was this day, the final. I remember him whispering, "oh no". Then getting up from his final and walking down to the professor who was grading papers. He whispered to her, "did Nigel make it". She said, "no". I'll never forget the look on his face, like he had been let down. Then he asked, "do you mind if I make a phone call" she replied, "no, go ahead". He stepped out of the room and told him to "get the hell over here and take the final". He walked back in the room with a grin on his face and sat down to finish his test.

I was really happy with the way he represented the football team. He cared so much about his teammates that he was willing to step out and call him. I was so proud of them, and at the same time hurt that I judged them. There is some real change going on with the way Jimbo is treating this team, and you can see it for the better.

oh what could have been

if only Rix hadnt been such a prick, maybe somebody would have called him to wake him up for that exam he missed.

Did you ever have Prof. Bruce Grindal?

One of my favorites from my time @ FSU.

This is a good story

thanks for posting. Bert was my high school teammate in football, and I knew him fairly well. To say he has done a complete 180 since his time in high school is an understatement. He was a cool guy, but some of his actions were very immature. I am glad to see he has matured and evolved into a team leader.

So, did Nigel make it to the test?

haha. I was wondering the same.

and honestly , I don’t think I want to know.

Lets just keep it at a fun story.

Which Nigel...

Delinquent Nigel “steals” Carr
Or
Dependable Nigel Bradham

Nigel Tuffnel

His volume goes to 11, don’t you know.

Dan Patrick: "Is Ponder a good name for a quarterback?"
Christian Ponder: "Why? Because you say I overthink things? is that what you’re trying to imply? As crazy as it sounds, my mom’s maiden name is actually SuperBowlWinner. Isn’t that crazy?"
DP: "Now is that hyphenated?"
CP7: "No, it’s all one word."

Jayce needs some support, OPS is only like 5th on the team, nowhere near the #1 he needs to be.

Figured my SN would haunt me...

I think it was Bradham, I don’t want to say for sure. He is usually at class but I think something unusual happened where he was running late for the test. The point is I was happy Bert cared. I think he did make it to the test, I left because I finished early. I guess we will all find out once we find out who is academically eligible or not. Twas my first post btw.

Also, I do know Bruce, great professor/anthropologist!

I hope you waited until he showed up before you left. Is FSU like other colleges where once one person finishes the exam, no one else late can start it?

If Bradham doesn't suit up in September, we're all coming after you Jayce...

Great post! I remember the days when I was on campus and got to interact with the players off the field. Enjoy those time because they are fleeting.

Glad to hear about Bert’s actions. They speak volumes about how far he has come since he came to FSU.

eh, none of my teachers ever had any sort of formal exam policy

I did have one large class where we had to show ID to turn in the exams (pretty rare since most large classes will have online or computer testing center only exams), but mostly there’s a general honor assumption that you’ll show up mostly on time and if you don’t you probably aren’t the kind of person that’s going to pass it anyway. Then there was that one math final where nobody turned it in before 3 hours were up and another exam was starting in 4 hours so if you were late you couldn’t pass!

Professor dependent.

I had one professor say you get two hours or until the last person finishes whichever comes first. Had another that said the final should take an hour. Show up sometime during that 2 hour window and take it.
