Four questions heading into Jimbo Fisher Camp
As many already know Jimbo Fisher Camp kicks off this weekend in Tallahassee. The camp is a great setting for the Florida State staff to take a hands-on approach to see how these athletes react and fit in to what the coaches look for. We expect over 100 athletes to attend the June session of the Jimbo Fisher Camp, including some of the top players in the country, making this FSU's biggest recruiting event of the year. Some national recruits we expect to see include 2012 running back Barry Sanders Jr, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, wide receiver Chris Black, tight end Christo Kourtzidis, and cornerback Tracy Howard. There will also be some top 2013 kids working out in front of the coaches like quarterback Brice Ramsey, running back Derrick Henry, wide receiver Richard Benjamin, linebacker Trey Johnson, and cornerback Vernon Hargreaves. And there are usually some surprises who show and no-show.
We take a look into some of the main story lines heading into this weekends camp
1. Will the Florida State coaching staff offer a Quarterback that attends the camp as they have done in years past? This is a tough question to answer with one quarterback already committed in Sean Maguire and top quarterback target Jameis Winston looking to make a decision around July. Jimbo likes to see his quarterbacks to be able to break down defenses on the chalk board to gauge whether they can grasp his offense, as Jacob Coker did a year ago.
2. Will we see a prospect commit during the Jimbo Fisher Camp as we have seen in years past? There is a very good chance of this happening if certain prospects receive a FSU offer. Some names to watch out for are DE/LB Eric Kinsey, who the staff will be watching to see if he can play linebacker, wide receiver Marvin Bracy, who already has a Florida State offer, and tight end Christo Kourtzidis of California, who will be making his second trip to Tallahassee this year.
3. What prospects will we see leave camp with a Florida State offer? Will it be sleeper Quarterback Brandon Silver, who shows the arm strength and speed that could surprise Head Coach Jimbo Fisher? Highlights of Silver here, here and here. Maybe sleeper running back prospects Traveon Henry or Torry Clayton will surprise. With some of the top cornerback targets coming off the board, will FSU offer speedster Daniel Gray who has only been playing the sport one year? Or will see enough to offer rising prospect Lucas Thompson or sleeper athlete Andre Scott? Or will FSU not see the need to offer any of these this weekend?
4. Will Christo Kourtzidis commit this weekend, effectively ending the recruiting process at the tight end position? With seemingly little separating the top tight end targets, FSU may look to secure a commitment and not wait around for a slightly better prospect, while risking losing a talented player who wants to be a 'Nole. Just in the last two weeks Florida State offered two tight end prospects in New Jersey's Michael Giacone and talented athlete Guito Ervilus. There could be pressure on Kourtzidis to commit this weekend and the tight end position is something to keep an eye on going forward.

i expect christo to the pull the trigger very shortly
michael, do you have a list of attendees?

I have a fluid list and it doesn't include all the names
With Miami & Florida both have camps this week some prospect are attending those first and trying to make it back to FSU.
If there is a certain player that you are wondering about I can try and answer if they will be there

Kent Taylor
Have we cooled on him or is his interest elsewhere?
"You make the helmet, the helmet doesn't make you." << Jimbo FN' Fisher
Twitter @RobbedbyJT
He is still very high on us and we are still showing interest
It’s just that it seems the coaching staff doesn’t want to wait for a commitment and put all of it’s eggs in one basket. With Christo making his decision very soon I think the coaching staff would take him at this point and be done at the TE position.

So do you feel the gap is not that great between those 2?
I haven’t followed the TE recruiting much, but I saw Taylor is #4 TE in the ESPNU 150 (4* Grade 80), and Christo is #24TE (3*).
Just Curious if the staff feels they can bring in another elite TE again this year after getting O’Leary last year (of course, I’m not sure any of our TE targets are “elite”).
I really feel Christo complement O'Leary better then Taylor
Right now Taylor is just a very good glorified Wide Receiver who has the potential to add a lot of weight(Dad is a former NFL OL). Right now he isn’t the blocker or complete tight end that Christo is imo. I feel the staff thinks the talent gap between Taylor and Christo isn’t that far apart. Our staff has shown a lot of attention getting Christo to make his second trip of the year out to Tallahassee.
I have Christo as a top 10 TE with offers from Alabama, Oklahoma, and Florida.

espn
has an article saying the exact opposite regarding taylor’s potential to add size
“Notes Kent Taylor (Land O’ Lakes, Fla./Land O’ Lakes) is the fourth and final tight end in the initial ESPNU 150. This is a tough and physical kid with good hands. He does possess a bit of a narrow frame and adding significant size may be difficult”

ESPN also said in it's evaluation of Mario Pender that he might not have a second gear right?
I’m not the biggest fan of what ESPN says.

I think they they are better than Rivals the last 3 or 4 years
that is not neccessarily a big compliment
how in the world do they think that?
That is ridiculous. They must have never watched his film. That would be the only way to say that and truly believe it.

I think these can be reconciled. he has the genes to do so, but perhaps not the frame.

FWIW
247 has christo higher than taylor
by newdynastynole on Jun 17, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe.....
But it would be nice to take both, we could move Taylor to WR. However we have other players higher on our list at the WR position, so if Christo commits Taylor might be S.O.L.

Is Tallahassee bathed in smoke like the rest of Florida?
Hope the prospects get some clean air to work out in. Alachua county should be nasty, not sure about Miami.
Everything is fine

Today is MUCH better than yesterday in Tallahassee
Or maybe I’m just getting used to it.
Where are you?
Daytona area.
We’ve lived in a perpetual smoke haze for over two weeks. There’s a 5000 acre fire in Flagler County that’s pretty serious, only 30% contained. I know near alachua that Baker Co. has a 8000 acre fire and Bradford has a 6500 acre fire. I hope the out of state prospects at the Fisher Camp get clean air and leave with a good impression.

Air quality is much much better than yesterday
We’ve also had some rain earlier today, so that helped to tamp down the fire and smoke as well.

Miami is fine, or at least it was.
I was there Monday-Wednesday
Real hazy Wednesday.
Has been off and on smoky for a month or so

You'd think we almost HAVE to be receiving a commitment or two
with the way this cycle is going. Florida, Clemson, Miami, etc. have all gotten commitments at their events. I’d like to see our staff push for a couple and keep up the momentum.
I definitely expect a few commitments.
Perhaps even some 2013 guys.

I see us making strides with some of the big ones.
Maybe a BSJ, Stefon Diggs, or Tracy Howard, or the like. Someone for whom we were not the previous favorite will put us on top.
Can I assume the camp is closed to spectators?
Or could I watch some from the baseball stadium?
Good question
I’m pretty sure it’s open to media not sure about spectators. I’ll try and ask around.

How much does it help us to have these national kids come
even if they dont ever commit?
Is there a tangential benefit in say, Oklahoma (or wherever Barry lives) bc there are reports that he is going to a Seminole Camp?
"However, I say, let UM burn." -onebarrelrum
It's a big deal imo
These recruits tell younger players at there HS about FSU, and for a school like Our Lady Good Counsel where Stefon Diggs plays at there are multiple D-1 kids who come out of that school every year(2013 CB Kendall Fuller is one of the best in the nation).

Michael
hypothetically.. would you rather have wes brown and diggs or barry sanders and a lesser wr?
With our RB depth and Pender coming in I would rather have Brown/Diggs
No WR on our roster has the type of big play ability that Diggs has. Rashad Greene is close but he is not at that level imo.
Follow me on twitter for recruiting info http://twitter.com/MichaelatTN
How hard does Jimbo have to sell Coker/Trickett/Secord/Maguire
to a recruit like Diggs?
I’m not knocking those QBs. I think we’ll have some special players from that list, but I’m just curious if landing “big name” QB goes a long way with recruits. I suppose we didn’t see a bunch of 5* receivers lining up when we signed EJ, so maybe I can deduct from that.
True, but pitching him against weatherford probably wasn’t that difficult. Didn’t it come down to bama/fsu?
by jasonole59 on Jun 17, 2011 6:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
IIRC EJ had already committeed by that point
EJ was a RS Soph last year and Julio was a Tr Jr. It came down to the govenor of Alabama.
And a backpack full of cash left on the front porch of his house.........

I wouldn't be shocked.

Don't underestimate the value of a correctly positioned 'n.'
i agree
which is why i am kind of worried IF we do get barry sanders jr because i doubt wes brown would come to fsu (or if we would even recruit him anymore) which would apparently cripple our chances with diggs…
by newdynastynole on Jun 17, 2011 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd gladly take Sanders and Waters.
The ONLY way I take Brown over Sanders is if it also lands Diggs and I keep both guys away from Miami. Miami could still replace Diggs with Waters (whom I am high on) but I don’t know who they’d replace Brown with since I don’t believe Sanders is considering them.

A great pickup for them. Florida and us had offered him.
