Christo Kourtzidis: Florida State Seminoles Commitment
Christo Kourtzidis, one of the the top tight ends in the country has committed to the Florida State Seminoles. Christo Kourtzidis is from Lutheran High School in Orange, California. He has visited FSU at least two times this off-season and bonded well enough with the coaching staff to pull the trigger.
Kourtzidis is 6'4.5" and 240 pounds, with the frame to play north of 260 pounds. He's not going to stretch the field vertically, but is a great complement to Nick O'Leary, who signed with FSU last cycle and is expected to be a hybrid tight end, lining up all over the field. With Kourtzidis as the in-line tight end and O'Leary as the multi-purpose tight end, FSU has an excellent pair of tight ends.
And as FSU fans have seen recently, playing tight end takes intelligence. The 'Noles had to gamble on some tight end prospects in the latter years of the 'Lost Decade,' but now the 'Noles seem to have their pick o' the litter. The coaches obviously feel comfortable that Kourtzidis can handle the offense.
Kourtzidis is rated a 4-star prospect by 247 (#5 TE), Scout (#7 TE), and Rivals (#8 TE), and a 3-star prospect by ESPN (#24 TE). 'Nole fans have to be happy about snagging a tight end whom three of the four services claim is one of the 10-best in the country. He also held offers from Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
Kourtzidis is FSU's 11th commitment of the 2012 cycle and he certainly won't hurt FSU's chances of again landing one of the top classes in the country.
Inside, you'll find film of Christo Kourtzidis

Honestly not sure who is better between him and the other TE prospects, but you don’t pass up a talent like Kourtzidis to gamble on someone who is debatably a hair better.

This is great news
I’m really looking forward to seeing some developed TE play again at FSU, there’s so much potential at the position. Hated missing that weapon.

Christian Ponder: "Why? Because you say I overthink things? is that what you’re trying to imply? As crazy as it sounds, my mom’s maiden name is actually SuperBowlWinner. Isn’t that crazy?"

Whoever the 2013 1st-year starter at QB is, this makes it easier.
I expect a heavy dose of Ace personnel (1RB/2TE) with NOL as the moveable H-Back and a stud blocker at TE.
Ace is an even formation, so it forces the defense to declare pre-snap—making QB reads a bit easier, it is balanced, allowing easier audibles, and with an H-Back like NOL, the motion options allow you to out-flank the defense much easier.
Not saying Christo will be the starting TE, but the theory remains the same if it is tank Sessions instead.
2013 depth chart:
H-back – NOL, Will Tye
TE – Tank Sessions, Christo Kourtizidis

It will be similar to what the Patriots did last year, and will do again this year. With Aaron Hernandez, Gronkowski, and Crumpler in a jumbo package. Its borderline unstoppable both run an pass. Just matchup problems running amok.

To get a top prospect out of Cali shows how well this staff recruits…
About this
We often get on other staffs for getting so National and neglecting FL. Is there any chance this is happening with FSU? Half of our current commitments are from kids outside of FL (CA, TX, AL, AL, GA, NJ). Any issue here, or is this anecdotal and not indicative of what we can expect moving forward.

Jimbo always said
inside out when it came to recruiting. Bud is absolutely right . My point was FSU is getting to a point where they can cherry pick top recruits nationally.
think about that statement, it has only been a year and we are " to a point where we can cherry pick"
that my friend gives me goosebumps…but i think to have sustained long term success we MUST own our backyard in recruiting, not saying CJF is not doing that, but he must continue.

This kid had traveled across the country a couple of times already, hadn't he? I'm sure we felt pretty good about our chances.
I don’t think it was like we were just driving to California in a van on a whim with some tattered scholarship papers in hand, just in case…
Its actually more then a year
I wrote something in another thread. But in the few months from Jimbo officially becoming HC to NSD we jumped from not ranked in top 15 to like 9 and ended at 6, First full year was 1, And then this year. let me find that breakdown. Here check this out on how his recruiting has been and at FSU from Bowden in charge to the time Jimbo took over as HC officially. Not including this recruit as I wrote this a few days ago
The last 4 years……..All taken on first class rankings apporx June per ESPN
This year 2012 class we have 10 commits with 1-5* 8-4* and 1-3* with 10 total recruits and 7 of the top 150 and we are ranked second at this moment. Our QB is just outside and our kicker is the 1 or 2 depending who u talk to
in 2011 initial poll we were 6th with 0-5* (Karlos ddnt get it till last update) with 8-4* and six 3* with 14 total recruits at this point with 6 in the top 150…we know where we finished. #1
in 2010 I could not find the first rankings as they only went top 10 and then 15 and we didnt crack either of those positions…..Till December. When December ranks came out we jumped to 10 from out of the top 15 with 19 commits with 5 in the top 150 with 2-5* 5-4* and 8-3*………..Notice we were not even in top 15 this year till December when Jimbo officially was taking over the following year/ In amazing fashion we Ended that cycle at number 6 with 24 commits 8 top 150 commits 2-5* 9-4* AND 9-3*. months from not in the discussion of top 15 to one of the top recruiting schools
Now we go to 2009
Not as much info in the same format. When initial ranking came out about the same time we were at 8. This was the class that we had some solid recruits. However buy signing day our final numbers, we were ranked 10 with 17 commits and only 3 in the top 150, the #1 prospect for us in the end based in ratings that cycle was Mcdaniel. So we only had 3 of 17 in the 150 in 09.
And I showed you the point where we went from out of the rankings in 2010 up to the october/novemberish rating when we hit 10 in December to 6 to finish to ending up at 6.
But I just wanted to take a look at where we stood based on a specific service and figure ESPN was the safest to use, So look those over and you can just be amazed at how we went from 3 of 17 recruits in the top 150 Bowdens final true recruiting year. To us out of the top 15 to #6 in 3 months after Jimbo took over in 2010 and a #1 to follow it.
3 of 17 at the end of 08………..7 of 10 to start 12. Crazy

Our core seems to be local kids
and Jimbo on ESPN noted there is no point chasing recruits around the country when we have the best kids in GA and Fla. I don’t mind taking a few from out of region, like EJ and Werner, to compliment a homegrown class.
However, where we, and others have gone wrong is taking the kids who come here from other places “to bring their game to south beach” instead of to get the best coaching or situation fit. In my opinion its a mental difference on the part of the playuh.
Of course there is always the random quarterback who feels a kinship with the head coach who he knows will have his back through thick and thin.

That’s the trap FSU got into in the latter 90s. It is multi-fold issue:
1) taking kids from schools you don’t regularly recruit makes judging character and work ethic harder
2) knowing the schools help you know how legit the GPAs are and how likely they are to stay eligible (APR).
3) further away they come from – more likely the homesickness issues
3a) kids from outside the south are going to have more trouble with heat and humidity
3b) culture issues coming from certain other regions
4) Florida and Georgia kids are more likely to have better skills and conditioning anyway – longer spring practice, etc. (though kids out of Texas and California can compete well).
5) Neglecting regional schools eventually bites you in the ass – that’s what happened to spiral FSU down in the lost decade – FSU fell from the national scale, couldn’t recruit OOS near as well, then couldn’t recruit regionally due to the neglect of local high school relationships.
by Wild@Heart Nole on Jun 19, 2011 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought the trap FSU got into the late 90's
was losing Mark Richt and still having Bobby Bowden on staff.
there was more than one cause
the recruiting down fall was tied to too much emphasis on recruiting nationally and a reliance on who everyone else thought was good (not scouting and evaluating for selves).
Jimbo’s greatest achievement in recruiting is he and his staff re-establishing relationships.
by Wild@Heart Nole on Jun 20, 2011 8:01 AM EDT up reply actions
I thought the trap FSU fell into in the Lost Decade
Was relying on outside recruiting services for our player evaluation, then relying on Jeff Bowden and Daryl Dickey for our player development.

"In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. "

There is...
credence to this. We became a program that became “Paper Recruiters” rather than talent evaluators (Hence always "Man does BB and FSU always close strong comments every year). Stars matter, but the right stars matter even more and it absolutely killed us.
Early evaluations, early commits & aggressive prospecting for the next year and year after classes is what wins the recruiting war. You win the recruiting wars and you win the ones on Saturdays.
Early evaluations and aggressively pursuing prospects is what we lacked imo.
It’s not where we recruited (Florida vs out of state) but how we recruited.

Getting commitments from California, Texas, and Alabama is not easy given that the in-state schools usually grab them, but the staff is on top of it. That is very impressive IMO.

Talk about strategic recruiting
If you can offer 3 players that are all very similar talent-wise, might as well pick the one with the most (good) baggage at his high school. Not sure how other tight ends fare in the baggage category (and I don’t know how conscious of a decision this was), but if an otherwise similar recruit can help your chances with a top O-lineman or QB in the next cycle, that sets him apart.
I would have said it if you didn't, maybe not as well as you did, but I would have tried.
That’s one of the reasons I like when we get kids from schools like Saint Thomas Aquinas.

No more fillers on this FSU roster………Tye and Sessions probably are talented but now we specialize in getting only the best of the best. And if Taylor wants to join O’Leary and Kourtzidis then we will take him.

Definitely better for them to transfer in such a situation
Unless they are looking for a degree from FSU or they are that die-hard of a nole… At which point, FSU would have to balance good will with recruiting ability.

This is absolutely the way to build a championship team. In fact, It’s won me 4 straight on NCAA 2011.
I just hope that those juniors and seniors (who I cut because I landed a stud freshman to replace them) will one day forgive FSU COACH.

How awesome is 2013 going to be though?
There is so much talent next year. Makes 2012 look bad.
2013 will not be as good as 12
Just cause of who we will lose. Not that an offseason will be 7-6 anymore. We can compete for a title in 12, think 12 is going to be a good year but not a title year. But turn it back on in 14. 2013 wil be new QB. any new DB. Lose quite a bit after 2012

Don't worry about them
Jimbo and the staff will do what has to be done….
Don't they also have more commits than us?
We now have 11, and one of them is a kicker… 6/10 non-ST ain’t bad. What are UF’s numbers?
I'll be shocked if Eligwe and Taylor don't end up in the 247.
24/7 came out with their list awhile ago and both of the above guys blew up rankings wise after that. That would move us to 9 out 10 (not counting the kicker), Maguire would be the only commit we have that is off the list.

This is awesome
I wish there was a better way to deal with “no rank” since they all have different caps. Being unranked in ESPN helps you out if you are ranked poorly by scout/rivals/247 (see Dalvon Stuckey, who got a bump by being hard-coded at 150/151). Still, very cool and shows that FSU still has the best class of the bunch
Boy I'll tell ya
I don’t know the other 3 teams recruits well enough (although it does seem like blanks is ranked awful low) but I feel that ALL of our recruits listed in this table should be ranked by the 4 major services when alls said and done.
Also, look who has 4 out of the top 6. Our Players in this lost are ranked, on average 119.55, and I don’t even need to do the math for the other 3 to tell you that we are the best, by far. Okay, fine, since you asked.
Floridas – 160.2
Clemson – 190.66
Miami – 192.85
"But they understand expectations don’t win games. And just because you’re picked to win, they don’t give you the trophy when the season starts. And we tell our kids that we have to form great habits and have great work ethic and form our identity as a team. We just have to reinforce that everyday because as we tell them, the pressure of expectations is only there if we aren’t prepared for them. If we prepared for them and we’re prepared mentally and physically, the pressure of the expectation won’t bother us." - Jimbo Fisher

To add to this, we also have numbers to back up the better average
Players on this list:
FSU: 9
UF: 10
UM: 7
Clemson: 6 (7 since Kelly should be in there)
No team is doing THAT poorly, but FSU and UF clearly in the lead.
FSU: 4 of top 6 and 6 of top 13
Will be interesting to see how the numbers move throughout the year
This is one of my favorite 2012 commitments thus far

Hey Bud
I know I have told you I know Kent Taylor, I know for a fact we are in his top 3, do you see this affecting this?
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Galatians 2:20
I moved from the Tampa Bay area to Indianapolis
So, I will have to send a friendly email to Kent and ask, I haven’t spoke to him in over a month

If he wants in, I fully expect FSU would accept his commitment.
I think Kent’s a very good TE prospect. But so is Christo, and Christo wanted to secure his spot and did so.

FWIW, I have a friend who lives in Brandon and is very close with the Taylor
It seems he is heavily leaning toward FSU after USF apparently sent feelers to his school. I think we can still get him.
How will this affect attrition? With Reilford, Tye, Sessions, O’Leary and now Kourtzidis (and assuming we get Taylor), who do you think will leave?
Reliford and Little are gone after this year. I have no problem with carrying 5 tight ends, particularly if it cuts down on the receivers.
