Arkansas hoops transfer to visit FSU this weekend
According to Jeff Goodman (CBS), who's one of the extremely reliable basketball writers out there, Arkansas transfer Jeff Peterson will be visiting FSU this weekend. He'd have one year of eligibility and could play immediately. He'd likely backup Ian Miller and Luke Loucks and provide bench minutes as a ball handler. If the roster progresses the way I think it will, then having some depth in case of injury is a smart move by the staff.
Why is this news? Because the Noles are already one scholarship over the limit.
So how will this shake out? Regardless of whether or not we land Peterson, it appears that not only is a current scholarship player gone - most likely through a Pierre Jordan transfer - but someone else is gone as well. Considering that Kiel Turpin, Terry Whisnant and Antwan Space are already on campus and Aaron Thomas isn't - well, the writing is on the wall.

well that sucks
i guess Thomas just had too far to go on his grades. if that is indeed the case, chalk this one up to another unfortunate situation where a kid couldnt take advantage of a great opportunity.

this doesnt seem too helpful to me
a one year rental of a kid who doesnt really seem to give us any more than louckes/miller -
especially if we have to push out jordan (who admittedly was a singleton throw-in)
im not really seeing the benefits of this move…
An injury to Miller or Loucks could be a disaster. This is hedging against that potential.

To think that our success could depend on the future of Luke Loucks is disheartening.
Seems like a good kid, good ball handler, but not top-half ACC PG good.

Don't underestimate the value of a correctly positioned 'n.'
I'm still putting my hope in Miller
After a year in the program, and finally healthy, I think he could have a breakout season.
Is it a done deal that he is coming to FSU and Thomas isn't?

No and no.
But pursuing Peterson at this stage means someone isn’t going to end up at FSU. Speculation leads to Thomas as the most likely.

Couldn't James just go on the GI Bill?

curious...
stick it to Uncle Sam and make them pay for the education he rightfully earned, and use it to our benefit.

He's probably receiving money but I believe he's on an athletic scholarship.

He's definitely on an athletic scholarship,
but the two aren’t independent things. The way I understand the GI Bill is that the check gets sent to FSU who then withdraw his outstanding tuition, and then deposit the rest into James personal account. Since he’s on scholarship, he gets all the money. Pulling his scholarship would effectively be taking the tuition money directly out of his pocket.
Editor of Run the Floor
i thought the athletic scholarship would nullify the use of the GI Bill
is that not correct?

That's the prevailing wisdom, but I don't believe it's true.
Would love some confirmation one way or the other.
Editor of Run the Floor
if not, i am totally for letting him keep his scholarship
lord knows he earned it with his play, and earned the GI Bill with his service, so if he is getting both i dont want to take either from him.

If he didn't get the scholarship from FSU he'd have his school still paid for by the GI Bill, no?
I don’t see the issue.

if you get more scholarship money than school costs, you get to keep the extra
i think what he is saying is that he gets both of them, taking one away would be taking money from him. its not that he wouldnt have a scholarship, its that he would lose personal money he earned.

Yes.
If he gets a free ride either way from the GI Bill I don’t see the issue.

So you want to say to James
“thanks for serving our country. Now to show you our appreciation we’re going to take away your athletic scholarship so you can use your $1200 a month to pay for tuition”?
Editor of Run the Floor
you dont have a problem with taking money from his pocket?
or are you not reading what both of us already said?

Thug move: getting yourself thrown out of a tight game at the start of the 2nd half
What if he pulls the same stunt at FSU, and it costs us an ACC win? What’s the TN people going to say then?

You act like he swung at the guy or something. It was a hard foul. Big deal. Didn’t look like anything happened that should’ve caused the benches to clear.

I think we can all agree "silly" can cost FSU some ball games.
The comments also got my attention. I guess he was at Iowa prior to Arkansas. He didnt endear himself there to the staff or fans.

Most transfers don't endear themselves to the spurned school.
But regardless, IF the kid ends up here, he’ll be here for 1 season. Not a major committment and I trust Ham’s judgment.

I have followed bball for over 20 years
and played small college ball. I can honestly say I know of very few players who have not been involved in an altercation similar to this one. Its just bball, and I agree with you. I mean would the response to Bird, Jordan, Ewing, Barkley, Kareem, Kobe, Miller, Shaq or practically every other elite hall of fame player’s involvement in altercations much worse than this(fist fights, literally)be met with a response like “Is this the same Jordan? I hope not, dont need this crap”?

Coming from a guy who followed Arkansas closely due to family ties,
Peterson is a good kid that is an exceptional student, but he is an average player at best. He was thought to be a more controlled version of Courtney Fortson but Peterson seemed to struggle shooting and his A/T Ratio was not very good either. Peterson is a good guy, but he would be better suited to play at another school. FSU has guards better than him now and would only have him for one year.
Can he handle the press and bring the ball up the floor?
There were times last year where I felt DK was the only one able to do that.
We don't know yet that he isn't coming.
