Justin Shanks Commits To Florida State Seminoles

Justin Shanks, a defensive tackle from Prattville High School in Prattville, Alabama has committed to the Florida State Seminoles. Shanks picked Florida State over Tennessee and Auburn. Shanks was one of the top defensive tackles on Florida State's board. He recently attended a camp at Florida State, and has been looking to be all Nole since.

Shanks is a 6'3" and 306 pounds grown man. He reportedly squats over 600 lbs and bench presses over 400 lbs. He's clearly a strong man, but he also shows good athleticism and good short area range. This is the third player from Alabama in this class. Along with 2012 DE Chris Casher and 2012 OL Alphonse Taylor, Florida State has done a fantastic job recruiting lineman from the state of Alabama. Florida State also seems to be in the top two for 5-star Alabama QB Jameis Winston, who looks to decide next week.

Shanks is further proof that Florida State is looking to move to a big SEC Defense. Shanks as mentioned above is already over 300 lbs. He had 50 tackles, six sacks, and two forced fumbles in his junior year. Check out film after the jump.

noles 247 is also reporting that this might not change anythign with 5 star eddie goldman :)

by newdynastynole on Jul 27, 2011 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

When I saw this I assumed we were done at DT (and DL)...

Although I know the rep is for DL guys to be qualifying risks…anyone know what the risk is of losing each of our DL recruits to date? (% that they don’t qualify)

quote on bama247 (free) regarding goldman

i know i mentined this earlier, but i just wanted to show an actual quote. all along i felt good about goldman but recently i am getting quite a bit more excited

"Newburg Quote:

"Justin Shanks commitment to Florida State will not deter Eddie Goldman. While on his visit, Goldman made it known that he would like to play alongside Shanks in college. Noles247 has been informed by a person who is close to Goldman and a current 2012 commit that hungout with him, that he would like to play with Shanks. At the time he did not know where Shanks was headed.

The only thing that would push Goldman away from FSU is the shear number of defensive tackles on board. However, he’s already developed a relationship with the future centerpiece of the line, Tim Jernigan.’"

I would say the answer to both is no.

The ability to continue to rotate in fresh quality heavy leaners all game will kill other teams in the fourth. most teams do not rotate their oline. So come the forth when they are going up agaisst our 3 deep of fresh d line that will pay huge dividend for us

You don't sign this many DL to transition to a 3-4, although I *DO* believe that Justin Shanks represents a potential 3-4 NT.

I was thinking about the UM side of things

If we want a down UM, there probably needs to be more than just VT over there in the Coastal – and UNC seemed a likely option.

by Invictus13 on Jul 27, 2011 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that's what kind of makes me a little mad he's gone.

You have to think that Florida State is going to win the Atlantic and Clemson/NC State will fight for second every year. However, the coastal is a battle between Miami and VA Tech. If Georgia Tech or North Carolina can be a thorn in Miami’s side, it would help us. Since both got nailed this offseason, I don’t think it’s necessarily a good thing for us.

Not that we should care too much in the grand scheme of things. We could very soon field a team more talented than the rest of the ACC combined.

might help

NC State, in getting in-state (in the state of NC) talent. That in turn could hurt us, as we play NCSU every year.

NC State has a poor recruiting staff imo

Lot of schools higher on a Carolina kid’s wish list. On the trail a down UNC helps USCe, Clemson and Va Tech. Most of the nationally elite kids from NC were leaving the state already so this doesn’t affect them.

Money talks but..

I think their OC is their QB coach and I doubt they would hire Craig as their OC/QB coach without experience. Auburn isn’t a threat imo because of their offense and the fact that they will almost for sure hire Chad Morris after Malazahn leaves. I think we lose him eventually but it will be to a mid tier BCS school as an OC.

So is it possible that we can get the #1 recruiting class again

I know we’re not taking as many as last year, but at this rate and with Jimbo & staff in the running still for some big time recruits is it at all possible?

Quality wise, I don't see anyone other than Alabama competing.

Texas has the numbers, but the quality isn’t spectacular. I do think Alabama wins the recruiting crown, followed by probably Florida, Texas or Florida State. If I had to guess, it’s Florida State number two because of the quality. Especially if Winston chooses Florida State. Our recruiting is actually pretty scary good right now.

His commitment was a head scratcher to begin with, but I just don’t see where he fits. The interior DL is very loaded and if Goldman was to jump on board, no one will turn him down.

Don’t see him on the OL. Trickett doesn’t want anyone that’s 335lbs out of high school unless they’re 6’7+ and incredibly athletic.

With heat-seeking missiles like Los and K Smith in the defensive backfield

this might not be so far fetched. You could take a kid like NLS and play him standing up as a huge MLB (which he played quite a bit of in HS) or down in a stance as a fifth DL. Definitely a wrinkle our opponents wouldn’t see every week. Whether or not it actually can work on a BCS college level – well that’s why Coach Stoops makes the big bucks.

It all depends

It takes even more than just stud recruits and awesome coaching to win a NT. It also takes a fair bit of luck, injury-related and otherwise.

An easy schedule that year helps too.

Agreed

But we are doing a hell of a job in making it so injury doesn’t cost us some chances. We are so deep that it would take multiple injuries to really kill us. QB as the exception right now. And maybe Coker can be decent by 12 from whatever snaps he gets. But our backups now are all prob going to start when they are upperclassman and if you have someone go down you have quality behind it. So thats one thing that his amazing recruiting run has done. Its nice to look at a depth chart and see some positions say A or B. or have a starter and the 2nd string is A or B and both 4* So

Schedule……..ugh

by RishiM on Jul 28, 2011 1:41 AM EDT reply actions

I think his HS team wanted him to disrupt the interior of offenses and opposed to simply occupy blockers (Just a guess)

Therefore he spent the majority of his snaps at the 3. He seems to be an example of a kid who can swing back and forth between both interior spots. Maybe rotating in at the 3 tech on early downs and lining up next to Jernigan in passing situations at the 1 spot.

by westcoastnolefan on Jul 28, 2011 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Long term though

I think his future is as a big athletic 1 tech type based on his size (He can possibly play north of 320 once the baby fat is shed)and skillset. More of a disruptor than playmaker. TJ and NLS can man the 3 while Shanks, Derrick Mitchell, and Stuckey rotate at the 1 I would think.

To me this commit says as much about how great our recruiting staff is

as it does at how much Auburn misses Tracy Rocker. I thought he was their best recruiter the last couple of years (although I know Trooper Taylor got much more pub for his recruiting).

While the guy they got to replace Rocker (Mike Pelton) may have an Auburn pedigree also, his name doesn’t mean as much as Rocker’s in state – and not as much as Craig’s also.

You could make an argument that Rocker’s name means more in state than Craig’s, you cannot for Pelton.
