Jameis Winston commits to Florida State

Jameis Winston, 5 star Florida State QB commit

Jameis Winston, the 5 star QB from Alabama, has committed to Florida State. Since the summer, Winston has been debating between Florida State and Alabama. The belief is that he was debating between playing in his home state of Alabama and playing for one of the best QB coaches in the nation in Jimbo Fisher. He made a late visit to Alabama in late July. Florida State finally won out.

Jameis has very few flaws to his game. He's rated the best dual-threat quarterback in the nation. He passed for over 2300 yards and rushed for another 800 in his 13 game junior season. He only threw three interceptions on the year. His arm strength is good, his running ability is tremendous, and his leadership is one of the most impressive things about his game. During the summer, he was paired up and was buddy-buddy with what could be his future mentor EJ Manuel at the Elite 11 QB camp. His accuracy might be his one downfall. Still, he was the best QB at the Elite 11 camp, and Jimbo Fisher is getting a good one.

The only downside to Winston is the potential that he could play pro baseball. He has the potential to be drafted high and stiff the college team he signs with, e.g. Joe Mauer. He could also play baseball in the spring, and football in the fall. Nick Saban is against his QBs playing any other sport, this probably helped lead Winston to pick Florida State. Nonetheless, this is a great signing for Florida State, and the highest rated QB signing for FSU since 2004 with Xavier Lee (hope I didn't just jinx it).  Check out film after the jump.

I just wish that he had put it together

when he started out HCing with my Browns. I started calling him Bill Bellacose (sp?) back then because he always looked dispeptic. Then he went to New England and suddenly turned into Bill Walsh 2.0.

by Nole75 on Aug 3, 2011 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You know why he got great when he went to New England?

Tom Brady. Bellicheck is the same coach as he was with the Browns, and he was terrible at NE until Brady got into the lineup.

by Distance on Aug 3, 2011 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Backwards.

Bellicheat figured his stuff out, which is what made Brady “great.” Put Tommy boy on any other team and zzzzzz.

by tuckwell on Aug 4, 2011 3:39 AM EDT up reply actions

They won 11 games the season when Tom Brady got hurt in the 1st game, and somehow didn't make the playoffs.

As with all great teams, there are many factors that go into them being great. Both Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are among the best that have ever done there job. I’m not a Pats fan, just someone that respects greatness. Like them or not, they are both great at what they do, period.

Bellicheck is great at a few things

Wheeling and dealing draft picks and players, maximizing value, assembling top flight coordinators, attention to detail…but for the most part, he’s the same coach as he was in Cleveland. The main difference is that the players he surrounds himself with are vastly better. Tom Brady included.

Football is won with players, not plays.

by Distance on Aug 4, 2011 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

“Bellicheck is great at a few things Wheeling and dealing draft picks and players, maximizing value, assembling top flight coordinators, attention to detail, I agree with you that he is “great” at all of those things. Those things are only, the things a coach is supposed to do.

I have no opinion on what he did in Clevelend. If you say “he was terrible” while he was there, I will neither agree or disagree with you. But if what you say is correct, somewhere, somehow, on his way to New England, he became a great coach. To bad he didn’t become more likeable.
As for “Football is won with players, not plays.” Football games are won by a combination of many things. No football team, or any team for that matter has ever won a championship without exceptionally good coaching. I have seen many teams loaded with talent, squandered by poor coaching (See F.S.U in “the lost decade”). I have also seen teams without any superstars, but with exceptional coaching, and a will to win; become champions, and superstars (See the New England in 01-02 season, playoffs, and Super Bowl XXXVI).
When a coach is able to
A- Wheel and deal for draft picks and players.
2- Bring in the right players with his wheeling and dealing.
D- Then get the maximizing value out of the players he brings in.
8- Assembles top flight assistant coaches, and coordinators.
H- While always paying close attention to detail.
Then that coach has done an exceptional job. When that coach continually does an exceptional job year after year, that is what people call a “Great Coach”. The reason so many people are so excited about F.S.U and where the program is going is because we see CJF doing all of these things (replace drafting players with recruiting players). He is doing an exceptional job (and by all accounts, he is an exceptionally good person too). If he continually does an exceptional job for a fraction of the time Coach Bowden did, he will be considered a great coach also.
One last point, If you think coaching doesn’t matter, just look at the difference Coach Fisher and company had in 1 year. There is on one person that has more to do with a team winning and loosing than their head coach.

When ahead never let up.When behind never give up.

Not entirely true about Richardson

He’s from Pensacola, which is traditionally Bama country. But, with the way things are going now, that could change…

by nole92 on Aug 3, 2011 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Pensacola is in LA

Lower Alabama, almost equally divided between Aub, Ala, FU and FSU. Which is one of the reasons Aub and Bama are tied for 3rd on my most hated list

by RANOLE on Aug 3, 2011 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

3 hours from Tallahassee

4 from Tuscaloosa, more from Auburn. FSU should be getting every single top recruit from this place. And trust me, we HATE it when people think we’re part of Alabama :)

Auburn is definitely closer than 4 hours from Pensacola

Not exactly sure of the time, but it only takes ~2.5 hours to get to Montomery.

My buddy works at a sprint store here in Metairie, LA and he had Talmon Gardner as a customer and he gave him the Tomahawk Chop. Yes, good point. From what I have heard he had a lot to do with it.

I think keeping the players that you currently have on your team happy has to be one of the biggest pluses you could have in recruiting, and it appears CJF and company do a great job of that. EJ surely seems happy, and JW being paired with him at the E11 had to help.

Our current staff has to be considered one of the strongest groups of recruiters ever put together.

To put it in perspective, as damn good as Bobby was as “the closer” and all that jazz…I’d still take this group over any of Bobby’s groups. I think their analysis/evaluation (big key), aggressiveness, persistence, etc. is simply unmatched, and they’re incredibly focused. You can see the type of player they’re going after at just about every position, much unlike the old glory teams of FSU when we had a tendency to go after guys in all shapes and sizes as long as they were athletes and could run.

When he came out in that yellow, purple, and blue shirt I was thinking, "is he going to go to L.S.U.?"

And the announcer Dari Nowkhah, or what ever his name is, stressed that he grew up 45 minutes from Tuscaloosa. Well I guess that wasn’t enough to stop Jimbo the FiveStar Fisherman Fisher from reeling him in.

Coach Craig needs alot of the thanks here.

Per Winstons coach:

Scott also said FSU quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Dameyune Craig developed a tight relationship with Winston that paid dividends for the Seminoles.

“He recruits our area,” Scott said. “Obviously he had an impact there. Ain’t no question about it, they worked hard recruiting him. The last two years, especially last year, he was here a lot. That definitely made an impact, there ain’t no question.”

Honestly

If you broke down the amount of time, effort and energy it requires per top tier kid. It would blow you away. That’s why it was always entertaining the “close fast” like FSU did during the Bowden days. It’s counter productive because you can divert more time to early evals.

Baseball sucks

everyone here knows that no sport holds a candle to the sensation that is football. You may make good money in baseball but baseball is dying a slow death (or for people like me, is already dead); playing in the MLB doesn’t even compare to the phenomenon that is college football… moreover, NFL.

just needed to be said…

Championship!

by TLHWG on Aug 3, 2011 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

p.s. I'm talking about popularity here

which is measured by TV ratings, total revenue generated, etc. Hell, women’s soccer destroyed baseball TV ratings… as does many other stuff on TV.

Championship!

by TLHWG on Aug 3, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I like the game and really find the history of it fascinating.

That said, I agree baseball is dying. At least for me it is. I haven’t watched 9 straight innings in a couple years now. I’m not even entirely sure why, but I know I’m not the only one.

25 game season

Play a 25 game season in baseball and it would reach the popularity of football. I agree football is much better, but I refuse to let baseball go. Same goes for the NBA, with a 75+ game season interest is just lost, because not every game matters.

FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!

by cmk07c on Aug 4, 2011 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Would weed out the non-elite

with 25 game season staffs would only carry the best of the best. Guys like Oliver Perez wouldn’t have 10 year careers. Wouldn’t be a crap shoot if there were only two starters per team it would even out the competition. Pittsburg could afford to pay two pitchers, because as it stands now the Phills and other big spenders just have the ability to outbuy pitching which causes a gap. Yeah 25 might be short but 50, now that would be reasonable.

FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!

by cmk07c on Aug 5, 2011 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

It would be a crap shoot due to the statistical variability that is inherent to baseball.

There’s a reason why teams like the Indians can go 30-15 and immediately followed by 23-36. 50 games is just too small of a sample size.

by nolesblogger on Aug 5, 2011 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Boston started off what 0-8

So they would be almost eliminated in a 25 game baseball season. And we know where they are now. Takes a month to even get started half the time
