Florida State Football Camp Questions: Defense
Florida State Football fall camp started yesterday! The Seminoles here are covered quite extensively, and 'Nole fans are right to be excited about this season. Yesterday, we covered the offense. So today, let's reign it in a little bit. Let's discuss the issues which are still unresolved for each position. I have included the depth chart from Seminoles.com, and have added the freshmen I mention in the article.
There aren't too many questions about defensive position battles. This is a very talented defense that will look to get more comfortable in its second year of a real scheme, and determine who the backups are. I am expecting the best defense since 2005 (Ernie Sims, Kam Wimbley, Lawrence Timmons, Broderick Bunkley, Antonio Cromartie, Pat Watkins and A.J. Nicholson).

Defensive Line
Will Tank Carradine challenge Bjoern Werner for the top spot at left end? After spring I would have said no, as Werner won the spring MVP. But Carradine has exploded in the weight program and is probably in line for a good bit of playing time regardless of starter status.
How many defensive tackles will see meaningful snaps? It will definitely be six, but could even be eight as Moses McCray practiced yesterday. The depth of this defensive front, which does not have a single senior, is insane.
Linebacker
Who wins the battle at Mike linebacker? We've pontificated that FSU will likely use a platoon here each week based on the opposing offense. Telvin Smith should be better against spread offenses (early in the year), while a bigger backer should be used against pro-style offenses later in the season. And that brings up a great point: Jeff Luc. We know Vince Williams is in the mix to start at Mike, but Luc was listed on the most recent depth chart as the backup at Will. This isn't that big of a deal, because the Will in the over front is basically a second Mike, and in 2012 Luc will be absorbing blocks and letting Telvin roam free.
Defensive Back
Who will win the free safety job (traditional strong safety spot)? FSU's safeties played poorly last year, and as a result, Lamarcus Joyner locked down a starting job this spring patrolling center field. Terrance Parks and Nick Moody will have to battle for the other safety spot, which means playing down in the box. Neither are superstars and the position will be decided not on who makes big plays, but rather on who most consistently plays his assignment. There are stars on this defense. Let the stars make the plays. Guys like Parks and Moody just need to consistently not make mistakes.
And that's another thing that really stands out to me. Some guys on this defense still think they are superstars when they are not. If they want to play, they will need to focus on playing sound, fundamental, assignment-based football. FSU now has the depth to sit guys who don't get it. Let the stars make the plays.

I have a feeling you won’t want to name names, but I would love to know what players you were talking about at the end of the article.
That dude is a star.

hes still young and needs to wrap up. But I dont see him being a reg guy just to make plays. hes boom or bust. But can get a lot more of a Boom if he fixes mental errors. Still Young. I would think more of the Moody or Parks type players who just need to play as he was mentioning are the ones. Not a stud recruit who were only So

Guaranteed Reid and Bradham top the list
Reid as a cb (his is a playmaker as a returner)
in no particular order my list is
Joyner
Reid
Jenkins
Jones
Rhodes
T Smith
Hope so. I think a lot of people were disappointed that he didn't have a breakout year last year.
But I’m really happy he’s sticking around for his Sr. year and giving the LBs a bit more experience.
Just led the team in tackles
He’ll be fine this year, if you ask me. Another year in the system, maybe not an all-timer but def in the top 5 playmakers on D.
Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.
I know that some were still disappointed, right or wrong.
And yes, he should be up there, no doubt.
I can’t pick just five. I seriously don’t know who to leave out. Nice problem to have.
My list
Hicks – big season
Harris – play maker
Rhodes – consistant
Moody – Big hitter
C. JOnes – Star in the making
I know I pick some of the back ups but they all seemed to show up on the few snaps they got. Moody, while bashed a lil here, was only a 1st year starter and gets a little too much heat IMO.
This defense is made to prevent big plays, not create knockout highlight reels.
Moody still has lots of potential, but he’s got a lot to clean up before he’s a star.
I think our philosophy will change
With our new found depth.
Assuming the bend dont break philosophy of the first year will stick is a huge leap

I think the philosophy of our D is built on being in the right place at the right time.
If you are, you will be in position to make big plays. There will be highlights as long as the guys understand and execute their assignments.
I just pre-ordered my SI 2012 FSU Championship Package.
by Jamil Dawson on Aug 10, 2011 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions
I disagree
I think this defense is made to create knockout Highlight reels because they are made to prevent big plays. Guys are sitting in zones ready to deliver the big hit when the receivers come into their area. It also lends itself to ints if played correctly. Plus it makes the QB work harder to find the open man in the different zones, which should hopefully give the DL time to crush him.
For me the top playmakers this season will be
Jenkins, Rhodes, Joyner, Telvin, and I’m on the fence with the 5th one. I think that it could be between 3 guys Bradham/Reid/Werner. I think that they all could be big playmakers, just need to see how well they have each progressed this offseason.

*I think that Werner is going to have a huge year as a run stopper.
I think that he is going to help our run defense alot. But he may not have a ton of numbers to support the argument of him being top “playmaker”.
by Noleforever9399 on Aug 9, 2011 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I'm looking for a really big year from Werner.
If I had to pick one position where I’m really interested in seeing the two deep battle for PT, it’s at Left End. I’ll have to go with Bud and say Tank won’t top Werner, but it will be a heck of a time watching them compete.
Even if Carradine plays more
they’ll keep the Werner as the nominal #1. That’ll keep Tank hungry and forestall one and done talk. Dline is a position that takes a lot of energy and backups see a lot of real plays.
I’m wondering if Tank can play the other side in run downs, or against run first teams (if there are any of these left).
Gotta think Stoops
will feature a lot more subbing this year than last. Maybe he won’t sub at the Mickey-Andrews rate, but much more so than last year.
What are you glorifying with your life?

I can’t wait to see what type of blitz packages will be opened up this year….instead of the mostly base stuff that was ran last year

Size?
How accurate are these sizes? I was hoping that Telvin would be bigger, but I think he has the ability to be the best guy on the field, despite being undersized. I’m rooting for him. Also, Tim wearing number 8, kind of odd for a D-Lineman.
FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!
Freeman is going to wear 8.
Telvin will switch.
Remember, new rule
says a number can be worn by 1 player per side of the ball. So both Freeman and defensive player can wear #8.
What are you glorifying with your life?
Oh yeah...
I’d rather they just go to three digits for linemen.
Waisome and Demps
They are wearing the sane number (6) I believe, and they obviously both play defense. Why is that?

Great point re: play your role, let the stars make plays. I liken it to someone on the line like McMahon not getting called out for steady play, or even in the old days when Robert Morgan would always come trhough when you needed him, but otherwise left the playmaking thing to PW & Coles who were the stars.

What!!!???
Robert Morgan was a horrible receiver…. I think he had more drops than catches.
He did
And I vivdly remember his one spectacular catch, because he went on to excessively celebrate and drew a flag. I thought at the time, “the ref should’ve picked up that flag – it was his only opportunity”
by Nolesos Locos on Aug 9, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I think I remember that celebration.
If I’m not mistaken, it was either shortly after, or shortly before another flag for celebrating a first down. It’s bad once, but the second one is just unforgivable, because you know it’s a flag. It’s about the most unforgiveably selfish act you can do.
I don’t remember if Morgan’s was first or second, if we are thinking of the same play, but for me personally that was the lowest moment of the lost decade, worse than the WF shutout. I just seriously wanted to stop being a fan.
So a flag was worse than getting shutout at home for the first time ever by a time that we had only lost to once in the history of our school?
ME NO THINKY SO

I dont know how you can think the lowest point

When Justin Bright is on your depth chart you are not deep at that position
in the photos – E Dawkins looks 2 inches taller than D. McAllister – but they are listed as the same height.
T. Jerinigan looks shorter than both of them but is listed as one inch taller
“Our best D since 2005” – WOW – that sounds really good – I am not so sure myself – but will be happy to be wrong – I just need to see it on the field first to believe – really only concerned about the interior line – they we not dominating against good or medicore competition last year

There are some 2nd and 3rd year players who are decent
that will be passed by some of the 1st and 2nd year guys in the program soon. Part of having an SEC-type defense means if you’re not the best player at that position, you don’t play – except for mop-up or ST duty. And that would be your last season.

I love the depth chart but I do not think Bright should be ahead of Demps on the depth chart.
Demps is 200+lbs and does well playing ST. He was a good player at Lowndes too. Just based on ST play & the eyeball test, Demps > Bright imo

On the 'Los side of the ledger,
He balled out all week in practice for the UA game (and was the talk of the entire camp). His moments during the game were the culmination of a great week, as opposed to making a couple of nice plays that came to him during the game.
Conversely, having sat through the OU, UNC and VT games watching our safeties (among other DBs) get torched all day long, let’s get ’Los acclimated to BCS pass defense before running him onto the field too early.
Finally someone has the balls to come out and say it...
…if its one thing this site needs, its more (and better) research. Come on Bud, et al., you are better than this…

If we got into trouble
on defensive ends we could always move Dawkins back to end since he played that before moving to end. Then we could say we have the only 295 pound defensive end in football.

Nick Moody...
I believe could turn out to be a star for us on defense at his new position. Everyone knew all along that he was playing out of position because it was very clear that his strengths were playing down-hill against the run and destroying ball-carriers or receivers in the short field. Now that he has finally moved into a position that I feel will be a much more natural fit, I think he has a real opportunity to make a huge impact and be a big time enforcer for us.
Agree totally
Hope Stoops uses the team strengths to cover the pass protection weaknesses here
'Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble this football.' John Heisman
I think Nick will get his,
Just later in the season. I think the Joyner move is a direct response to playing 3 no-huddle spread-types in the first 4 weeks. Once we play regular offenses, I expect Moody to spell or even start over Parks, assuming he progresses on the mental stuff.
Also, since Joyner is smaller his injury chance is higher, so having an experienced Moody/Parks behind him is a great luxury.

Do you (or any of the other contributors) have plans to do a detailed comparison of position depth and player stats as they stand right before opening weekend versus what you had described in the MSP preview? I think it would be helpful to see the minor changes and results of position battles that occurred over the summer practice period.

FSU’s Oline + Pryor, outweigh OU’s front 7 by 30 lbs (1780 – 1750)
FSU’s front 7 out weigh OU’s Oline + 250lb FB by 111 lbs. (1871 – 1760)
Not to mention that EJ is bigger than all their LB’s and one of their DE’s

Who are the 3 freshmen most likely to get PT on D, if any do?
Mine:
1. Jenkins
2. Williams
3. Jernigan
Jernigan
Erving
Waisome
'Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble this football.' John Heisman
Forgot about Waisome, who is the most likely of all to get PT
Erving I didn’t think about b/c I was thinking true freshmen, but yes I expect Erving to get plenty of PT too.
Arrington Jenkins is your top guy?
Do explain.
I would change that to Waisome
If we consider RS freshmen, then you add Cam Erving and Nigel T.
Jerningan is on the 4-deep and I’m not sure which of the guys ahead of him he might bump. McCallister? I’m not sure we’ll rotate 4 deep at DT.
Williams depends upon how quickly he can pick up the schemes and know his assignments. He also has 2 very veteran guys ahead of him.
I don’t think we’re as deep at LB as we are across the line or in the secondary, and I can see someone getting injured and Jenkins making it into the two deep. Isn’t he older than all of the other LBs anyway? Nigel T. hasn’t played a down and Luc hasn’t played much. So, yeah, I think Jenkins might challenge breaking into the 2-deep and see some snaps. Depends on how the new guys perform and injuries.
These two pieces (defense and offense camp questions) are really good simply because of the credibility of TN. Its not some weak sauce “lets make positive things seem like problem/questions” piece. TN shoots it straight and there’s nowhere else I would go for FSU analysis. My compliments may get old, but TN earns it every time.
When its hard to know what positives are being fluffed by over-eager emotion, its seems sometimes better to focus on the hard questions to gain a measure of team improvement.

Dont agree with this snippet
We know Vince Williams is in the mix to start at Mike, but Luc was listed on the most recent depth chart as the backup at Will. This isn’t that big of a deal, because the Will in the over front is basically a second Mike
Mike in an Over front is a 2-gap player essentially, a prototype LB. Will gets walked out more and is generally a better coverage guy.
not so much in zone
he’ll have the same responsibilities as the Sam

You'll still play some M2M
nobody plays zone all the time.
and the Hook/Curl zone is the same for Sam and Will until you start rotating coverages to Hook/Force and flats

Hmm, perhaps I have my terminology wrong. As it was explained to me, the Will will take on blockers more and the Mike will run free (250lb will, 215lb mike).

Will can take them on more, if he's playing over the bubble
while Mike is somewhat protected behind the Nose in an Overshifted front. Mike is still the one that is always gonna be in the box.
But Will often has to be walked out to the slot for leverage (whether you play zone or man you still have leverage to worry about), and the slot is almost always weakside. When that happens you have to shift Mike over to help with that bubble, so he’s a 2-gapper.

I'll settle this
Mike can go to the box as long as I get to be in the slot.

that works out
because Will is all over that tight end

Offense: Surprised to not see Gehres listed
amongst medically DQ’d and now student-coaches. Staff must see something then in him.
What are you glorifying with your life?
Hope he makes it, but that was
supposed to be a pretty devastating injury. I would imagine he would have to take a medical redshirt this year and hope for playing time next year.

Joyner to have a big year!
I understand this will be Joyners first year as a starter, and moving from corner to safety is usually tough to do, but Joyner is a freak athlete, that has cover ability and isn’t affraid to come up and play run support. Really excited about this years secondary and Dline.
