VERY concerned about our offensive line and running game.

After barely running the football against ULM and Charleston Southern I was convinced it was gamesmanship from Jimbo Fisher, protecting our run schemes from Oklahoma's coaching staff. Surely we're holding back, protecting our looks (and our running backs) to unload on Oklahoma.

Except that, well, we didn't run tonight either. 26 carries total, half of which belonged to scrambling EJ and running-for-his-life Clint Trickett.

So what gives here?

I realize Fahrenkrug and Stork are relatively new and need time to adjust. But now we've played two cupcakes and an elite team and haven't successfully run the football against any of them. It seems pretty obvious there is a problem.

The young receiver corps is looking outstanding, and the line did a pretty great job tonight (all things considered) protecting EJ and Clint in the pass game. Early on we did a good job using the tight ends, too.

But the run...I mean...why can't we run?

Totally agree

We have to get this corrected before next week. Our offense is starting to look like Jeff Bowden’s and I believe this all rests on the OL……time to step up boys. We must win the conference.

by patriotnole on Sep 18, 2011 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

Whats a stable of RBs when we cant run block?

I think Stork was a weak spot and Fahrenkrug wasnt much better. With all that said, if we play exactly like we did last night vs Clemson with no improvement at all in the run game, we win by double digits.

by cerebralfish on Sep 18, 2011 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed

If we are going to win our conference then we need to establish a better running game. Did we really think running up the middle every time was going to work? We have some really good running backs, lets get it together on the play calling or run routes. I think the OL did ok. They gave Trickett and EJ some time to get the passes off. Are they great? NO! But we need them to be especially this week against Clemson! Lets go NOLES! All wins from here!

Lord, you must not have a very clear memory of the JB Era

Does Wake Forest 30 – FSU ZERO stir any memories? We may need work on the OLine but we are not nearly that bad off.

Our O-line

Stork and Krug better get ready because #98 Brandon Thompson is better than anyone OU had on the D-line

Call me Nostradamus

(Posted this last week here regarding the betting line)

Shocked by the line
I was honestly shocked that the line was so close.

We should have been able to run at will against our first two opponents, but struggled. We’re averaging 4 yards (it seems like we’re averaging fewer, doesn’t it) a carry, but meat and potatoes runs are stuffed time after time. If we couldn’t run against our first two opponents, how in the world are we going to be able to run against Oklahoma?

Another area of concern is Manuel. He does eyelock on receivers and, no matter how many times he gets yelled at for it, he’ll throw into good coverage or miss a safety. I’d guess he’ll have at least two, probably three, interceptions. (btw Trickett looks great! Needs a sammich, though.)

The defense looks good, but it’s impossible to tell how they’ll stack up against a team as big and talented as Oklahoma.

Finally, we haven’t created enough turnovers.

Unless Oklahoma is a lot worse than they were last year, I think we’ll lose by at least a couple of touchdowns. I hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t think we can pull it off. I’ll probably bet a small amount against us and hope that I lose some money.

Hey, Nostra.

Did you also predict that Jimbo would not use his best running back in the game? EJ?

by Dr.KennethNoisewater on Sep 19, 2011 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

EJ's INT's

One was a great play by the linebacker. When you play a team as talented as Oklahoma they will make plays, I credit that one to a great defensive effort more then a poor decision/throw by Manuel. The other one was a clear mental error by the reciever. Clint’s INT was also a tipped pass and then a great play by an OU defender.

IF i remember correctly

over the last few years one aspect of our offense struggled early on in every season. Look where our offense has finished once the season plays out. we have consistantly had a top 20 adjust offense..

1 - 2 Jimbo's coming for you, 3 - 4 Gator’s better lock their door, 5 - 6 grap your crucifix, 7 – 8 Muschamp better stay up late, 9 - 10 never sleep again!!!

by Seminole4Ever on Sep 18, 2011 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

I think you’re right. It truly seems like the oline needs a good early season chewing from Trickett every year before they start playing like they can.

by 38Noles on Sep 18, 2011 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agree. Look at the past 2 years when we have had good lines.

In 09 when we had that awesome offense we couldn’t get much going against JSU or even USF at home. Then last year our offense couldn’t do anything verse OU then either.

by Blake Davis on Sep 18, 2011 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

You are right and I do think they will get better

I just hope it starts next week…..Clemson is a much more important game than OU

by patriotnole on Sep 18, 2011 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

The running game is disgusting.

There is no push, no holes, nothing! The pass blocking wasn’t great vs okl but, they held up pretty good. Fisher is calling run plays just to keep the defense from pinning there ears back. Our running game has to improve for the Noles to beat Miami and Florida. Especially Florida, their defense would in our backfield all day if we were to play them yesterday. I’m not saying we are going to have a horrible season just because we lost or anything. I am saying that we are going to run the ball a lot better than what we have done so far otherwise the season will rest on our defense and quarterback.

by aznole85 on Sep 18, 2011 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

I thought the pass blocking was fantastic

Especially early. EJ had years to throw. Even Clint had good time until OU realized they could blitz every play.

looks like i'm really getting some publicity with this previous post

ONE MORE TIME, was referring to pass protection, NOT run blocking. I 100% agree our run blocking has been terrible in all 3 games so far this season and I am very disappointed…

I will say however I am not surprised. Our Oline was my biggest concern during the offseason, as i’m sure it was for many others as well.. With that being said I think they have pleasantly surprised me in their pass protection.

I'd like to see Wilder play more

Granted, he’s just a freshman (so is Freeman) but he seems to be able to fall forward for at least a couple of extra yards on each carry. I think he could be like Whaley was for Oklahoma- nothing flashy, but strong enough to move the pile forward.

I think it'll take a little more time

Since the o-line had such little real time practicing together in the offseason… In a sense, right now is their off season when they are getting that time together… That said, I am incredibly excited about this group of young receivers.

by CT_Nole on Sep 18, 2011 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

I notice that

no one is blaming the coaches. I’m not suggesting that the any of the coaches deserve to be on the hot seat, but if Trickett is such a guru, what gives with the pitiful performance to date. And Fisher/Coley are supposed to know what talent they have and how to call plays accordingly. If the middle of the OL isn’t that great, shouldn’t they call plays that protect FSU’s weaknesses. And speaking of Fisher, the QB coach…ummm, EJ is 4 years in and still makes some ridiculous decisions. And what’s with missing so many open receivers?
I love our coaches, but right now the offense seems a bit lost with a RS JR at QB and except for WR, pretty experienced at every other position.

oh no,

i’m blaming the coaches.. play calling had me scratching my head all night.. we never tested the edges all night.. we kept trying to run it up the middle with our 190 pound running back with the 220 pound full back and no holes… where was the option all night? jet sweep? anything to play against the smaller defenders on the edges..

when we flew all the way to BFE Dakota to land a juco OL and he was slated to instantly start ahead of a couple kids that had been here prior to his arrival that the coaches felt we had a major hole to fill.

O-Line

Terrible, same story different year. However, with this Defense and just natural ability I really don’t see us losing another game. The D is just nasty and thank God, because this is one of the worst FSU O-Lines I can remember. I got jumped all over by everyone on here for mentioning that…. Oh no chemistry, blah blah blah. My response was get it done, everyone else said wait we’ve had injuries i’m not concerned, they know the system, how dare you…. News flash, they flat out suck and I hope Trickett has them running laps right now. Hard to beat the number 1 team in the nation when you’re one deminosional.

No

But every couple years we have issues, new guys. I thought with Trickett, we were going to be getting consistency. Kind of like how Wisconsin or BC (not this year) kind of just move the guys in. We have so much depth on the line (numbers wise) that guys should just be kind of sliding into a slot. Lots of Sophmores and JR’s on that line roster. I’m saying that on August 24 I said this line is made of glass, suspect, etc. and half the board jumped down my throat. Try not to misread what I’m saying, because I think Trick is an awesome line coach, but we’re just seeing too much inconsistency and we should be at that point where we just “reload” we’ve had Trick for a few years now.

FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!

by cmk07c on Sep 19, 2011 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

example

If Stork or Krug aren’t getting it done, I’d hoped we’d get to the point we’re we just go with the next guy to get the job done. If you take out EJ’s positive scrambles and designed runs, you will see that we had 18 rushing attempts for -22 yards. If i was trickett I would be running those guys until they’re sick, dehydrated and blowing chunks all over the place. You are a D-1 team and a top one at that. You should be able to get push and execute. I don’t care if we are playing the NFC or AFC pro-bowl D we should be able to get positive runs in certain situations. We looked like a JV line out there. And anyone out there thinking otherwise or giving that much credit to Oklahomas D-Line has their blinders on. Our tackles, center and guards should of had more production.

FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!

seemed like everytime I thought we had an advantage over miami because of their new patchwork OL and our very good DL

Art Kehoe would have them more than ready. By game 1. Now THAT was an elite OL coach, judging from his results at the time.

Just spiffballing

(though I am willing to spitball), but I’m betting that the coaches who are “clearly” missing things in our eyes might have a bit more information, experience, insight and motivation to get it right than, say, one of us. Criticizing these guys on a massive scale at this point, given who they are and what they’ve accomplished, is….dumb. Sorry, but that’s the word.
