ACC expands to 14
According to ESPN the ACC has officially accepted Syracuse and Pitt as the 13th and 14th members of the ACC.
Pittsburgh and Syracuse, once flagship programs of the Big East, have been accepted as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, extending the league's current membership to 14 schools, the ACC announced Sunday morning.
Hall of Fame Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that adding Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC would be 'a coup' for the conference.
The ACC Council of Presidents unanimously voted upon the decision. The invitation followed the submission of letters of application from both universities.
"The ACC is a strong, united conference that is only going to get better with the addition of the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University," Duke president Richard Broadhead, chair of the ACC Council of Presidents, said in a prepared statement. "Both schools are committed to competing at the highest level of academics and athletics. We welcome them as full partners in the ACC."
Not sure how everyone else feels about this but just like with a few other ACC teams hiring new head coaches, this doesn't seem to be the "slam dunk" teams that the ACC should have been looking for. Somewhat disappointed.

And who is the guys ESPN pulls for the big interview....Coach K....a basketball coach.
Who’s up for a road trip to Syracuse? Better yet, who the hell wants to go to Syracuse?
in fairness, the football coaches would be unavailable

Doesn't matter if they are available or not.
The interview w/ Coach K just further reinforces everyone’s impression that these additions are only good for basketball.
and when they mentioned the University Presidents
it only further reinforced my belief that this move is primarily about academics. And then there’s the rumor that ESPNs next series of interviews will be with campus trash collectors—we all know what that will further reinforce!!!
Not available my butt.

Also just read that...
ACC may be looking to still expand further to 16 teams! Their targets? The football powerhouses, UConn and Rutgers.

I read yesterday that the rumor was the ACC told Texas they couldn't bring Texas Tech with them.
So now Texas seems to be headed to the Pac 12.

Well, that just leaves me
Flabberdisgusted.
But I don't know how true that is.
I didn’t actually read it on a newspaper site. I think it was just the BC Interruption editor that said it. I’ve been over there talking expansion the past few days and he seems a bit stuck up.

Bummed
about last night’s game and now this.
In a world where football drives the money, we add 2 basketball schools.
On the plus side
if the four big superconferences of 16 in a new division of the NCAA or in its own association, with playoffs among them (whether conference champs in a four team playoff, or the conference champs plus 4 wild cards), happens, FSU is almost guaranteed a spot in the playoffs each year.

Except the other craptastic teams in the league will get to split our playoff money while we’ll get NO additional revenues from the other thirteen other dwarves

But-but-but
Think of how good our BASKETBALL will be!
the increased revenue for basketball does have to be considered
with Pitt, Syracuse and if rumors true UConn (oh, and Rutgers(?) too), the basketball package, including conference tourney, will be a premium package.
And will there be any Northeast football playing teams of even slight significance beyond Penn State not in the ACC? Does the ACC think that’s worth something in this move?

I say we get rid of the Basketball team just to spite them
But still take Duke’s tourny money. Its not like Duke won’t be taking our BCS money.
Unbelievable lack of leadership at FSU.
West Virginia, Missouri, VT as potential schools to be the 14th member of the SEC instead of FSU. Looks like Texas is getting squeezed.
Huh?
They were proactive, preemptive and might have saved our SEC dreaming rear ends. We seem to be assuming that our leadership simply ignored an opportunity to get into the SEC. What makes us all so sure we had/have any chance to get in? How would you feel sitting in a 1o-team conference after Clemson and Virginia Tech bolted somewhere? I would have liked to have seen us in the SEC. It appears that option was not highly likely. Therefore…

I can only comment that this "really sucks"
As an ACC homer born, raised, and still living in Virginia, I have always enjoyed my Noles playing in the ACC…selfishly because I could travel to a few games a year to see them play. The addition of Pitt and Syracuse does absolutely nothing for this league other than being an asset to basketball. This really sucks for the Noles, and frankly the league. FSU should start formal negotiations with Vandy or Kentucky immediately to switch leagues. We’d go to a baseball/football league and either Vandy or KY could go to this new elite bball league (the Big East South).
I wish we were privy to the larger plan to see where this is headed
sometimes I feel like the ACC isn’t even sure where its going, they just sorta make moves and hope for a checkmate
"Kill a fly with an axe"
My fear is that they know EXACTLY what they're doing
and are in the midst of pulling off a basketball coup from their underground bunker in tobacco road.
FSU Knows Too
Eric Barron was quoted in ESPN story stating Pitt & Cuse were perfect additions because the ACC is “the best academics, great basketball, and good football.” ….. along with Swofford stating “We’ve now closed the gap between Maryland and Mass.”
Blatantly obvious the move was made because we are a basketball conference and want to strengthen that product in the maximum amount of market exposure.
This is a difference in culture, and FSU fans have a different cultural interest than other ACC members.

I think it's blatantly obvious the move was made to be the only conference in larger, northeastern tv markets.
And to also make BC less of an outlier. Saying the ACC is good at football is just the truth. Doesn’t mean basketball was the driving force.

How does stretching the conference even father North solve the "BC outlier" problem?
Now we have a Syracuse and Pitt outlier problem.
If there is a "Syracuse and Pitt outlier problem"
then there is a Miami and Florida State outlier problem as well.

Or we'll be even luckier and have Notre Dame join the ACC
Then FSU can stay in the ACC without worrying about money.

Anybody heard of Kentucky, LSU and Florida? The SEC can play basketball...wake up and smell the competition!
I honestly believe the ACC has paid shills
working the blogosphere to sell this STINKER. I think we have one working the TN board hard over on Bud’s feature story that will probably have 1000 comments by the end of the day.
You can tell who he is because he’s new to TN and his only comments sound like professional press releases from the ACC’s Communication Office—-just too polished. Curious if anyone else can spot him?
In full disclosure, I’m new to TN as a REGISTERED member but, as a graduate and lifetime fan of FSU, have been reading this blog DAILY for over two years and am familiar with most contributing members.
