Let me preface this by saying that I have complete faith in Jimbo and Tricket to correct our offensive issues and that this post is basically a result of me thinking about FSU footbal 24/7. Take it for what it's worth. Considering the ineffectiveness of the o-line and the lack of a running game, I believe Jimbo should consider running the I-formation and playing more of a power style offense. I say this realizing that there may not be enough time to completely change our offensive scheme, but think this style would allow us to be more effective.
First of all, the I formation would allow us to have our best pure runner at halfback (Freeman) without having to worry about him in pass pro. This formation would allow Pryor to stay in and block, while Freeman could be the check down receiver in passing downs; and to reiterate, it would allow us to have our best runner on the field.
Also, with our lack of depth at the receiver position due to injuries, the I formation would only require 2 - 3 receivers on the field at a time. I am really concerned about the health of the receivers and this may take some pressure off them.
In addition, the I formation would allow us to get away from zone blocking and require the O-line to play more smash mouth style. I don't have anything against zone blocking, but I'm not sure this unit is ready for the complexities of this style and they may be better suited to just go out and push people around.
Jimbo's offense requires the backs and receivers to be good blockers, unfortunately at this point our best offensive players are missing playing time because they haven't learned the blocking responsibilities. I'm probably just grasping at straws, but I think this would allow us to keep play-makers like Freeman, Greene and O'Leary on the field.
