2012 Recruiting Discussion Thread #38 [CLOSED]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread. Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects. We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker. Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

If you post information from another site, please indicate from where you read it.

Specific Player Questions (Check here before asking)

  • Mario Edwards Jr.- Michael@TN reported that Edwards commitment to Florida State is again solid after the Unofficial Visit during the NC State 34-0 blowout. Edwards Jr will Official Visit Florida State on January 13.
  • Dante Fowler- His recruitment has been very interesting. He's grown up a Florida State fan, but still has ties to Florida. He's taken multiple visit to Florida, including this summer when he was rumored to be leaning toward Florida. He also took in the beating Florida received from Alabama in early October. He's remained a Florida State commitment, but is scheduled to take official visits to University of Southern California, as well as Louisiana State. Those schools should not matter though, as he's been quoted as saying it's down to Florida and Florida State. His recruitment should be something interesting to watch.
  • Dorial Green-Beckham- FSU is not in the race for this receiver from Missouri. His brother is very sick and he wants to stay closer to Arkansas. That means Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, etc. Not FSU.
  • Andrus Peat- One of the more intriguing players in this class. Although at first glance you question why a kid from Arizona with a brother at Nebraska would go to FSU, there is some interest here. Peat's grandparents surprisingly live in Tallahassee. FSU still isn't the favorite to get Peat, that's probably Nebraska, but it's not impossible for Peat to be a Nole come signing day. And there is no question that FSU would take him if he wants in. 1/4/12 update: Corey Long of ESPN.com is reporting he plans to visit FSU the weekend of January 20th.
  • Jameis Winston- is a Nole. There's no talk of him switching to hometown Alabama. There's no visits scheduled to Florida State yet (that are known of), but there are none to Alabama either. No need to worry about this point.

How would you feel about the quality of that OL class?

by 504Nole on Jan 15, 2012 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

Disappointed honestly

I like Glauser but Watson is basically an unknown (though super athletic) and Scelfo, eh. I love last years OL class though.

No Need to Panic

I believe we only sign 3 OLineman at the most!!! Had a great class of Oline in 2011. I think in 2013 we will have another great Oline recruiting class!!! I think Goodman stays at Arizona State, Sceilfo ends up at North Carolina, Andrus Peat @ Nebraska. I think if we sign more than 1 Olineman, the other 2 signees will be Will Latu and Menelik Watson, both JUCO OLineman

by FSUnolefan on Jan 15, 2012 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think this is absolutely spot on. Idk how feasible, would love to swap out Scelfo for Goodman.

This OL class just makes me smh. Esp with all the talent that was available this year in state.

3 Jucu O lineman and 0 HS O lineman

would be disappointing. Aside from that it’s a great class

by Nole300 on Jan 15, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

I believe so, I know our oline was the achilles heel this season with the injuries and lack of self discipline (penalites) to boot. Besides just in my opinion, we had a great 2011 Oline recruiting class so if we stay healthy this upcoming season hopefully our line will gel together as a unit. By only taking 1 olineman max 3, its not going to hurt us

But, remember the 2010 class was Dan Foose?

Could someone explain what happens on an official and unofficial visit and the difference between the two?

I know a recruit has only 5 officials and unlimited unofficials, but what does a kid get exposed to on an official that he doesn’t on an unofficial? Are the coaches able to take them out to dinner or does the meal have to be supplied by the school somehow?

I’ve always wondered the difference between the 2 from the recruit’s standpoint.

by GermDaveNole on Jan 12, 2012 6:25 PM EST reply actions

I believe Jimbo has the recruits over to his house for dinner.

Don’t think you can do that on a unofficial.

A coach's time with a recruit is limited is it not?

I’m wondered as well, I know officials are all paid, but what about unofficials? Are they not on the recruits’ dime?

I don't see it helping them.

Dabo will have to dedicate time to hiring a DC during the most crucial recruiting period with one less coach on the staff. I have to believe this will help us w/ Darby.

If im not mistaken, Clemson was doing a good job recruiting FL before Steele arrived.

Spiller and some others come to mind. Depending on who they get I could see it hurt recruiting. Not necessarily in FL, but overall. Steele was a darn good recruiter, no doubt. It’ll be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Steele's Unceremonious Exit proves

you are just one season away from gone when you don’t have a dominating defensive line (unless you were fortunate-enough to coach for Bobby Bowden).

by car54 on Jan 12, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

There's reports of Steele having mental issues
We have heard several disturbing things about Steele’s possible psychological breakdown during the Orange Bowl game. Multiple sources have said that he was calling plays from his days with the Panthers, which aren’t in the Clemson playbook, and as such the players were totally confused. It reportedly happened during the Auburn game as well. I do not know if that is true, and frankly think it a bit farfetched, but I do know that Steele has a reputation for being a nervous wreck on gamedays. I’m sure most of you recall that he passed out on the sidelines during a game, and I have heard many times that he requires an IV for fluids because he’s such a wreck and won’t eat at all on gameday. Hopefully he can get these things corrected for his own health.

From the same article

As you see, if the ducks quack loud enough, things happen. As for recruiting impact this weekend, I think it is going to be minimal unless we have a total philosophic shift on defense, and with Dabo’s preference for tight coverage and pressure, I doubt that happens. Steele was not the chief recruiter for our defensive commitments this cycle.

Entertaining but irrational comments... but consider the source.

So it came down to this conflict in recruiting philosophy?

with Dabo’s preference for tight coverage and pressure

by car54 on Jan 13, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

Actually STS is one of the best sites on the net

He’s stating that he feels that Dabo will higher somebody bringing a similar defensive scheme so the players they’ve been recruiting will fit in. He’s not saying that Steele left because he and Dabo had different belief systems.

Can anyone explain what it’s like to be a big profile recruit? I am interested in aspects such as when do you begin being recruited? How is contact initially made between players and schools? If you’re being recruited by 5 or 10 schools + fans + recruitniks how do you possibly focus on school and have a life without being bombarded with questions? What the heck do coaches and recruits talk about? Like with my friends we hang out and do stuff but you wouldn’t necessarily do that with a coach from a school you don’t/can’t see so how does the relationship get formed really? What is/is not allowed as a recruit such as:

  • how expensive can dinner be
  • are any gifts at all allowed?
  • Does accepting gifts make you ineligible (say I want to sabotage a FU recruit – could I legally get in trouble if I gift him 5k (within IRS gift limits) only to make him ineligible)?

Scholarships are typically for 1 year only or 4 years or depends?

Sorry for so many questions but I am sure many others have these as well.

by ttubasketball on Jan 12, 2012 7:17 PM EST reply actions

A) The dinner has to be within what’s called “the reasonable scope of entertainment” (also known as the Willie Williams Rule) most compliance offices set what it would be per person.

2) No gifts allowed. Their host is given $30 per day for entertainment but can’t buy paraphenalia for them

D) Potentially yes

Plaid) 1 year. Athlete and coach sign renewal paperwork at the end of the GIA award

ppffftt...

Lol. 30 per day however there is an additional 15 per additional prospect you are hosting.

So…If I host 2 prospects over a weekend I get $90 for a fri-sat night if ive signed up as their host.

by FSU on Jan 13, 2012 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

I am terrible at math, I will be the first to admit, but...

Isn’t $30 + $30 + $15 + $15 + $15 + $15 = $120?

Or is it just $15 per recruit, not $15 per recruit per day?

I bet they are real careful about that

Nothing like getting in trouble cause someone takes a pic at a bar of an 18 year old recruit chugging a beer with his host from the team.

Now, not saying many times they dont have a “good” time lol, and not bashing it. But I bet its not as crazy the majority of the time, depends on past relationships and what the team/coaches policy is and being careful of violations.

Even though I know the thread was just talking about it I didnt mean to derail

As an aside...the first questions

- Recruiting for high profile players varies with the prospect and the situation. Literally every kid is different.
- Most of the time contact is made through coaching networks, recruiting services or camp
- Prospects quickly find out that being high profile has its disadvantages (everyone evaluating every move you make thinking it’s a tip off to what your thought process is)
- Prospects and coaches talk about different things. Some talk about ball. Some talk about life. Some a mixture of both. Odell is old school and very good at this

by FSU on Jan 12, 2012 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

This is fantastic.

Thanks for taking the time! I bet the framework is very similar to top recruits, with, perhaps, the numbers of times taken from classrooms and focus received at the schools being different. Again, thanks…

Foxy Coeds as Escorts

Are made available to some recruits. I had a med student several years ago, a very fine lady who was an FSU alum. During her last year, she was a volunteer escort. The duties she told us about were the typical tours around campus sort of thing.
Of course being a hot blooded Nole I wondered about the nature of this escort business.
Any “inside” information to he’d light on this practice?

Never liked the practice, Don’t like the term escort either for hostesses or whatever each institution calls it. It gets into a grey area of ‘direction’ by the institution post ‘official’ duties and I don’t like getting mixed up in that business. (see UT “Hostess Situation” as an example).

Maybe things have changed but I still think that kids are kids.

My most favorite memory was a weekend with a bunch of broke guys, and we were visiting a school on a late fall “Indian Summer”, Half of us were put up in one Frat house. The other half, in another. Both Frat houses had a so-called “Friendly” lacrosse game…..I mean we were all football players and we tried like hell to win. Tough not very pretty game..:)

These are the kind of out of the box recruiting idea’s that schools just either are too lazy to employ, or except for schools like USC….Do not have the support of all necessary parties involved. It is just all to easy to just write a check.

JC coaches have less restrictions and can advocate for you with kids, HS coaches, etc. and can keep you in the loop on what other programs are doing if you and their staff are close.

Ive always wondered something, is Juco its own division? Or is it D2 or D3 football?

I just never read about D2 or D3 kids transfering to D1 and I’ve wondered if Juco means just that.

Happens on occasion.

JC is its own entity separate from NCAA & NAIA. In fact, JC has its own levels (JC Division I vs. JC Division II, etc). And some areas such as California are their own deal with some sports.

If you count prep school as sign and place

then Broderick Bunkley (sp?), DL, was a success story years ago. I don’t hear much about prep schools any more. Does anyone know if that route has fallen out of fashion?

by Nole75 on Jan 13, 2012 2:34 AM EST up reply actions

You might be referring to a post graduate year

I’m not exactly sure what the conditions are for people to do a post-graduate year at a prep school, though. I went to a boarding school in MA that always had a number of post graduate students on the football and basketball teams (Dallas Baker for example). Stay tuned…

by Geoff33rpm on Jan 13, 2012 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

From my boarding school's website

“Community college vs. NMH postgraduate program: What’s the difference?
The NMH postgraduate program positions students to be more competitive in the application process than other options. The placement of our seniors in college and the success of NMH postgraduate alumni give NMH a far stronger brand than a community college option. Our postgraduate program offers a competitive level of college freshman-equivalent courses for advanced students or an extended senior curriculum for those postgraduate students who need a fifth year to develop advanced critical thinking, qualitative analysis, and other academic skills. Our SAT score averages are higher than virtually all community colleges, demonstrating a higher level of enrolled students’ aptitude. One hundred percent of our post graduates move on to a four-year competitive college experience.”

I’m guessing it’s the preference of one’s parents (and whether or not they’re able/willing to commit the finances).

by Geoff33rpm on Jan 13, 2012 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

using prep school has fallen out of favor

due to abuse by basketball. The Washington Post and New York Times both had investigative reports revealing a number of prep schools as shames. The NCAA responded by cracking down. Now a prep school is an option only if it meets certain accepted certification standards PLUS the student athlete can only make up one class there.

So, it is only an option if you are one NCAA required academic credit short AND/OR you need to boost your test scores.

(quality recruits, not fillers) how many would we like to take? 20? Cause if so, its not looking like we are going to make it. Also, if we whiff on Goldman, Howard, Peat, and Goodman, on a scale of 1-10 how much do we panic. 1 being very little and 10 being we run in the streets as if Al Gore’s predictions were come true?

we have all sorts of talent but, big holes still. OLine, LB, Corner, and arguably RB. And if we don’t close on NSD, I will start to worry. FSU won't whiff on Goldman.

I’d really love to have Goodman and Peat But the Noles would be lucky to get just 1 of those 2 right now it seems. I think FSU’s shot with Goldman is more solid than some of the committed recruits. Just that the Bammers are throwing out all this false confidence that makes it appear otherwise.

So Goldman isnt more of a sure bet then any of our committed guys. And even MEJ has not said he is not a Nole which when he truly isnt still planning on coming here if that happens he will tell the coaching staff.

Goldman is someone that would be nice as a Nole but don’t expect it. Just hope it happens its a flip of a coin basically at this point

I get the feeling that Nelson Algholor

Isn’t serious at all about FSU and is OVing this weekend to recruit for another school. I understand the kid is a talent but I wish Jimbo and company stopped going after him.
The reason for this is looking at his twitter account when dealing with FSU. First was him tweeting while his dad is asking the FSU guys during an in home visit stupid questions according to him. And the second was a tweet today about how he is kind of excited about coming to FSU. I hope he’s not coming to recruit for UF.
I know FSU hasnt really been a contender for his services but it seems like he clowns FSU and seems to me like a waste of time

Goldman

Goldman has 4 schools in his top 4: FSU, Bama, Auburn, UM. Scott from 247 said on twitter that UM is there more out of respect for the coaches after taking an OV, and has no shot. So it’s FSU, Bama, Auburn.

Considering his lead recruiter left Bama to be DC, Auburn just hired a new DC, IMO Goldman is ours to lose.

Just remember… You want to make sure that the process student-athletes are admitted is a normal process like all students (and be documented as such) so that there isn’t a potential charge of preferential treatment – Athletics hands in Academics. Especially for a school like FSU given the history.

Mmm…You do long term because if there’s a discrepancy in how they were certified – They’ll pull them to make sure they don’t practice or play a player not eligible. Patience is better served in this case (by FSU, ACC & NCAA) so there’s no snafus long term to avoid the major violation (proof of involvement in circumventing the admission process).

Checks & balances overall are a good thing.

LOL. This is sort of long.

True. All is speculation until he actually shows up in the fall. However one thing I’ll say here just once… All are cognizant of what the other is doing. (“Speculative”, below):

FSU: We’re not recruiting you as a DT contrary to what you’re being told by some, because we’re signing DTs. You’ve seen how we want to use you on film. We want to have posse of DL that wear people out and you can make plays as a DE here.
MEJ: EG, They signing you? What have they been saying to you?
EG: Yeah, they coming after me hard. I like FSU man. Bama gives me a lot to think about.. Putting people on D in pro’s and all. coach and all.
FSU: EG, Look at our track record we put people in the pros on the DL. Look at CJF track record… You don’t have to sit if your good enough. Difference here is you have a chance to building something. Put a historic program back to a championship and always be remembered. There you’re just another guy in a string of guys. They’ll compare you to other players they have. Won’t stand out like here.
EG: True. Don’t like being compared. Want to be my own person. Stand alone.
FSU: Think of it like this – If you’re talented enough to play right away (which you are), you get to play together with a crew of DL and you’ll be known for being your own person not a part of a stable. And..,you’ll be coached by someone you like MEJ (Coach Elliot) and you like EG (Coach Odell) in a program that’s put DL players in the pros (make you better at some things you need to work on)‘. And EG a guy who’s recruited from day 1 and isnt going anywhere.
MEJ & EG: True. Very True.
FSU: You know these guys (Winston, Williams, Bracy, etc), You get to be the class that puts the icing on the cake for a championship. You get to be known for that. There’s no pressure. There really isn’t…But when you put all the pieces, all the facts together…whew.. Seems like a great choice, right? Just think about it, we’ll talk some more later.
EG: All right
MEJ: All right

The BBall game must have been fantastic for the recruits.

ESPN Game Day was there, (was this a first for the Noles?); FSU takes UNC by 33 points, (has to be a first for the Noles); and the fans went wild (per TN). The statistics guys at TN could probably do a standard deviation and a chi squared thing or whatever voodoo that they do, on the chances of all of that happening concurrently with a big OV visit, and come to the conclusion that this is Kismet, within a reasonable degree of statistical probability.

Agreed

hes a very nice project if we get him. after watching his video I like his pass blocking a lot more than his run blocking however. he tends to get ahead of himself an let him upper body do all the work when the legs should be driving him through and opponent but he has a great donkey kick and does sit well in pass pro.

by afnole on Jan 16, 2012 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

Ronald Darby

This guy has speed that is so important, apparently it is more straight line speed. As he didn’t do as well in the shuttle, comparatively to his 40 time of 4.31. It could be that he hasn’t practiced the shuttle, it can be a little tricky to get a good time?

However, we need some pure speed and he has it. He and Bracy could give us that element.

Solid if you are referring to my comments
ESPN on their 150 he is #69 and shows his 40 time as being the best at 4.31 and his 20 yd shuttle as 4.28 compared to best time of 3.80. Shows his straight ahead speed is better than his speed in the Shuttle, comparatively.

Honestly, the shuttle is more about technique than anything

I’ve seen no where near elite athletes run sub 4.00 shuttles after going to a speed school and learning the technique. So a track guy like Darby I doubt he has done much training for something as insignificant as the 20 yd shuttle

Leonard Williams

Now that Edwards has grown into at least a hybrid DT, and we have two Weakside DE’s in Casher and Fowler. It seems we need a Strongside DE and I just have a great feeling that Leonard Williams is going to be something special.

I know that having 3 DEs is a lot, but this young man is special, and I feel like to re-enforce our DE depth, taking this kid, and giving him a chance to compete and push the others would make our DE that much better. We did just have two scholarships open up…..

I mean that at 6’4" 297 lbs he is not going to be quick enough to play DE on obvious pass plays, however, in watching the UA game, he clearly is good enough athlete to play. I am assuming that he if he plays DE it will be on obvious run plays, where he will be more of a DT.

Melvin Ingram...

is who MEJ reminds me of. super athletic for his size and the skill to play inside/out. agree with Bud that he will be a DE on 1st and 2nd down, and will move inside in passing situations to put another pass rusher on the field much like uscE did this year with clowner, taylor and ingram inside at times.

by fsu419 on Jan 15, 2012 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

MEJ is playing Strongside DE for us

He won’t be playing any DT (except maybe in special pass rush packages?) I believe the issue with taking Williams who by all means is phenomenal is that it will drastically hurt DE recruiting the next year or two with taking 4 DE’s in one class to go along with our already stacked DL

I’m in Knoxville right now and today was a beautifully clear day, but it still has that faint winter gloom that latitudes north of, say, Savannah, have this time of year. Perhaps, no, probably that’s just me, having grown up in Central Florida. But, there’s no question, I’ll play south of the FL/GA border if I end up getting special dispensation from the NCAA — since I graduated in the late 80s — and D1 scholarships.

Not sure how much this idea has been tossed around, but if Leonard Williams wants to commit ..

Could Fowler take on Mike or Jack LB from his first days at FSU? In a 4-3, I don’t know how often one starts at Jack. Seems as though most grow into that role later in their career.

247Sports lists him at 258# which would be a monster college linebacker once he packs on more solid weight.

Thoughts?

by NOLEinTX on Jan 15, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Bama's starting linebackers were 242, 245, 260, & 265 Lbs.

both are way to good with their hand on the ground to move to LB. Rotate em all to keep em fresh and hit the trail hard next year with a loaded LB class.

I’ll be honest in saying I haven’t watched all the guys’ film, so I don’t know who has good hips, agility, balance, etc. I just see someone who is 6’5 playing on the line. Same as JWJ at 6’2 playing LB—not RB, but I digress.

by NOLEinTX on Jan 15, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

JWJ

looks to be closer to 6-3, or 6-4 than 6-2…which would be even more reason to move to LB

by az5950 on Jan 16, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks for clarification... hence the 3 we both noted for LBs.

Sometimes FSU plays Brandon Jenkins (a DE) like a Jack LB and stands him up. My question was if Fowler could take on that role now and not wait until he has to start impressing NFL scouts because he’s undersized before the draft. That would make it more enticing to bring in Leonard Williams who HAS to play on the line and is phenomenal. Plus, FSU could use more LBs, no?

by NOLEinTX on Jan 15, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

The logjam at DE is the thing I’m considering here. 4 league-quality DEs in one recruiting year creates an issue in recruiting later like we might see with last year’s large OL class vs a potentially tiny one this year. Just thinking out loud.

we only return 4 DEs with playing experience (Werner, Jenkins, Hicks, Carradine) and 2 are seniors (Jenkins, Carradine). There may be a log jam for one year—2012 w 9 DEs with L. Williams—but in 2013 there will only be 7. Eliot likes to rotate DEs, and it will be nice to have the option to rotate 3 on each side instead of being forced to rotate only 2 on each side. Also prudent to figure in injuries, attrition and just players that don’t develop.

Championship!

by TLHWG on Jan 15, 2012 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

The comment was about logjam in the context of recruiting future years, like 2013 and beyond

9 in 2012 as you mentioned. If we bring in 2 in 2013, we are back at nine again and only 2 can see the filed at any time. Naturally, there are guys leaving school early, guys who do not pan out, get injured or whatever. Add just a little attrition due to early graduation and injuries and such and I agree with you on one hand, but on the other top recruits like PT and its difficult to get that if there are 7 or 8 other guys who were highly rated already in the pipeline. So the question is: how do you sell and recruit top guys in 2013 and beyond when you’re already loaded? Answer: same thing Saban does. INvite them to play for a top D noted for sending guys to the league.

Since FSU plays a 4-3 the vast majority of the time

the idea of “occasionally” standing up Fowler would not really change the mind of Leonard Williams. If you’re saying maybe Fowler can be a 4-3 LB then maybe there is a valid point to be made.

Of course landing Fowler and Williams together would be the ideal case

But if I can choose one or the other, I’m taking Williams. Probably against the grain of many others here but IMO, here’s how I would rank the DEs:

Casher (I’ve said all along that I think he will be the gem of this entire class with Pender 2nd)
Edwards
Williams
Fowler

Why?

I dropped off recruiting just after the season started, but I remember Williams be (easily) the 4th best option with our current crop.

Has his stock improved so much that he’s “the best on the board” to bring in drafting terms (viable recruiting option). Otherwise, I feel like we could balance out the class a bit more to fit team needs.

IDK, been out of the loop and interested to the rationale.

I think at this point the coaches have a good idea of the players left on our board that we’ll pull and which ones are almost assured to be going elsewhere. I thought our upperclassmen were proof of that as all of them seemed to improve a noticeable amount since we started bringing in young elite talent. Even guys who seemed to have reached their ceiling like G5 and Bradham looked much better this year and I’m convinced being surrounded by CJ7, XR27, Harris, Joyner, etc had a lot to do with that.

Sanctions probably won't be as bad as most would think

Even so, Golden can offer plenty of playing time. Miami can give them the magician act. Plenty of time for other teams to recruit these players and show them what’s really under the hood.

by SeminoleDynastyMP on Jan 15, 2012 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Dont think that'll be the case for at least a few more years.

Miami will have enough staunch fans to still bring in a good class, especially when the talent is up – like it is now.

Because they are in the ACC, i still think Miami can put together some nice seasons with quality coaching (something they haven’t really had in a while). The biggest limitation to Miami and their money deficiency is coaching talent retainage; not unlike FSU, but worse. First, they have to rely on unproven coaches, and then if they turn out any good, they;ll be picked off, rather than pulling a Clemson (Malzan) or Bama (Smart), or FSU (Stoops).

They received a VERY large gift to endow football scholarships not too long ago.

$4 million if memory serves. And the gift was specifically to endow football scholarships. That’s strong.

It’s an improvement. But still need more because of their costs.

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 12:55 AM EST up reply actions

Yep. It helps. They’re also hopeful for renegotiated TV contract as well. But need more cash … The one downfall of being a private school

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

FSU, you're very knowledgable about this sort of thing. I seem to recall $50k

As being the amount needed to endow one football scholarship. If that’s true, then the $4.2 million would endow the entire team (84 ships). Does that sound right?

by SailorNole on Jan 16, 2012 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

$50K varies from school to school because of cost of attendance. Think of it this way, essential an Athletic department “writes a check” to the institution just like a normal student does when they’re paying their tuition.

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

I got ya. Thanks.

I believe the $50k figure was for Florida State. It’s undoubtedly MUCH higher at UM unless they have some sort of sliding scale,

by SailorNole on Jan 16, 2012 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

Actually to fully endow a scholarship (athletically or academically) it takes around $500k. Endowments typically pay off approximately 4% off of the initial investment each year. This means it takes about 500k to give off about 20k.

Many schools do begin their endowment programs at lower “levels” because it’s makes it easier to fundraise the complete number to endow all scholarships (more people able to make gifts).

by jmunole on Jan 16, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Assume he means output costs for one year

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

That wouldn’t make sense. Miami had a donor that said I’ll foot the scholarship bill for one year and then that’s it? If I were Miami I would rather “endow” about 8 or 9 full scholarships for perpetuity.

by jmunole on Jan 16, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

No, Im assuming he means that’s what the output cost for tuition for one year would roughly be $50k at the back end (that’s what you’d have to have) not the amount you have to raise and then pull of the investment percentage off the front end.

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Sailor Nole: Here’s a good link about endowments and scholarship costs from Seminole Boosters. Doesn’t answer your Miami question but does give good insight. A fully endowed scholarship at FSU for Football costs about $750k

by jmunole on Jan 16, 2012 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

I think Miami is about to be crushed.

Like, 3 or 4 year bowl ban, 1 year TV ban, 40-50 scholarships bad.

by Widespread Seminole on Jan 15, 2012 9:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

The NCAA just hit Ohio State with a 1 year bowl ban and 9 scholarships over 3 years – and that’s a situation where the head coach literally knew what was going on and knowingly played ineligible players. As much as people spoke to Yahoo about Miami, my guess is that many will conveniently clam up when it comes to the NCAA (and my recollection is that Miami just settled with the trustee handling the Shapiro mess which means they’ll avoid people getting subpoenaed and forced to offer testimony under oath).

It’s been two decades since the NCAA imposed a TV ban on a major program. They didn’t even put Alabama on a TV ban in 2002 when the NCAA folks were saying the violations were some of the worst they had ever season. I’d be shocked to see a TV ban happening short of video of Donna Shalala herself literally handing wads of cash to recruits and turning to the camera and saying. “@#$% you, NCAA!”

The reason USC got hit as bad as it did was not really because of the seriousness of the offense, but because Mike Garrett completely botched the situation and infuriated the enforcement staff. They pretended like they had done nothing wrong, didn’t exactly bend over backward for the NCAA, and proposed football punishment that basically amounted to putting a letter of admonishment in a coach’s personnel file. Note how Miami is already taking steps to act as contrite as possible (e.g., self-imposing one year bowl ban)?

The only thing working against Miami is that the sports media flipped out when the Yahoo report came out, and that means there may be some pressure on the NCAA to make Miami an example. But if recent history is a guide, the punishment for Miami isn’t going to be as bad as many are imagining.

by whodoes on Jan 15, 2012 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

Correct. You get harsher penalties the more you are uncooperative with Enforcement staff. When you don’t have subpeona power and the member becomes obstructive…They’ll get the hammer.

USC compliance situation was a joke. Would NOT of happened if Pat Hayden would been there.

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

No Way

They impose a TV ban. The NCAA and the ACC know what makes the football world keep going and it isn’t academics. It will be worse than OSU but not as bad as USC. They just can’t prove some of the crazy stuff on that report. Only what the players or credible witnesses admit meaning shapiro does not count. Plus: the NCAA has no subpoena rights.

by MeBeFirst on Jan 15, 2012 11:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Exactly. People should just stop talking about TV bans

They’re off the table these days. I’m not even sure whether they would stand up in court if challenged, considering these TV contracts. If an Auburn get’s a TV ban, CBS/ESPN not only loses Auburn games, but loses an Alabama game, an LSU game, a UGA game, etc.

Here's the thing

If we bring in Leonard, who’s to say he stays a DE?

I really don’t think competition is they key here… if Fowler is fine with MEJ and Casher in the class, he shouldn’t worry about Leonard.

I think that is up to Williams. If he commits Fowler may flip, but, If he doesn't Fowler will probably sign.

Of course I’m just speculating based on whats been said by Fowler. Of course if you are asking me I’d take Fowler

Definitely think Williams is a more complete player

Kid is physical. Fowler may be a better pass rusher but Williams definitely will be able to push the pocket and dominate against the run

You're really fine with taking Williams and dropping Fowler?...

I for one am not. Do we really need that many DEs in one class? IMO no need to be greedy and risk loosing Fowler.

You would still be taking 3 DE’s. I think his point was that if we took 3 he’d rather it be MEJ, Casher, Williams instead of Fowler.

No doubt

great talent, at this point though tired of all his games, take Williams if he wants in, if Fowler flips so be it.

Good point.

by Nole300 on Jan 15, 2012 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think any of them are scared by the competition.

That’s what is great about this staff and the planning they do for recruits before they even sign. THey show them a roadmap of exactly how they picture them being used and stick to their word.

If you don’t believe it, just ask JWJ.

That guy should be starting at an LB position next year, but the staff kept their word and he will be fighting it out for RB playing time.

by fsudude on Jan 16, 2012 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

Dont we almost NEED 4 defensive ends? 3 is probably a bare minimum for this class.

In the last 2 classes, who am I missing?
2010 – Werner – possibly gone after 2012
2011 – Tank – gone after 2012
Newberry – ceiling unknown currently

Dan Hicks would be the only 2009 guy for 2013, and he hasn’t taken the step to starter status yet.

Either way, I see us very inexperienced depth-wise at 2013 DE. If we luck out and score the 4 aforementioned this class, we’d still be relying on second year players to fill our 2-deep.

Grab all 4, no doubt about it, right?

I caught up with CB Colin Blake

He really enjoyed his visit to FSU this weekend. He likes that FSU has coaching stablility, as Texas A&M just hired a new defensive coordinator yesterday(Mark Snyder) and with Oklahoma DB Coach Willie Martinez leaving(main recruiter). Depending on how he clicks with Snyder will impact if he solidifies his committment to A&M he told me. He also like how FSU uses Xavier Rhodes in the defense(Blake is a tall CB just like Rhodes)

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

LOL. I think its more like don’t believe the criticism that what we’ve done offensively wont give you an opportunity to be successful in the NFL. I had two former starters win in college and now they’re on National TV in the playoffs.

Actually I suspect from what I’ve heard what tOSU will do on offense will have more diversity than at UF. During the sabbatical he’s had time to visit with a lot of people (Most notably Oregon). He also had to view each Big10 program up close (thanks ESPN — eyeroll). He should return to be a better coach.

It’s not feasible, but I wish all coaches were permitted to take a sabbatical every 7 years or so to recharge and learn new techniques from others

by FSU on Jan 16, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

IMO this will make Randy Shannon much better in whatever role he ends up in

Read about him doing that at a lot of places. He’s always had a successful career as a DC, but obviously was a disaster as a head coach.

And I’d rather see Venables than Shannon as Clemson DC for that reason.

I think it’s a good thing to have sabbaticals to open up yourself to new approaches. HC’s don’t have the opportunity to do so unless they get fired or “resign for health reasons”.

Although I say that the WBB at Arizona St. is taking a whole year off and her AD is allowing her to do so.

by duvalseminole on Jan 16, 2012 10:38 AM EST via mobile reply actions

It's not about disrespect, it's about numbers, needs, and competition.

Our class was going to be smaller than usual to begin with and we had some needs to fill like K & P, making it even smaller. It’s not like we took 3 other LBs over him. We had 1 who is by all accounts the best LB in the country. As soon as another roster spot opened back up, then we give him the green light. I understand how he feels. Being that things are so tight and with the quality of the class, he may come to be thankful for the opportunity to join this stellar class.
