Some choice quotes from Dabo's press conference about Steele today. Notably, he had ACC Champ trophy at table, yet no oranges.
On Steele "Can't let a terrible night lose sight of some special things we accomplished this year" - like giving up 27+ points to 9 teams, including an FCS team and a 2-10 team.
"Clemson football is back, and we ain't going nowhere"
"I have no doubt we can become the dominant team that the ACC has needed.
"Right now we are the best team in this league" - 3rd in ACC in F/+
"we've got a chance over the next 4-6 years to make a run that Clemson hasn't seen in a long time."
I hope we're accumulating bulletin board material here.

They were a pretty solid program until about 1990
National Championship in 1981 and finished in the top 12 seven times from 1982-1990.

In other words......
until about the time FSU joined the conference.

That was part of it
though not sure how much considering we split a home and home against them in 1988-89 and needed a gimmick play late to get our win. We did follow that with 11 straight wins against them, but their decline had already began at that point.
Another factor was that Virginia and Georgia Tech both put together pretty successful runs, with UVA earning a preseason #1 rank, and GT winning a NC in 1990. ACC has a round robin schedule at the time, so they had to face both every year. Not sure, but they may still have been playing Georgia regularly as well.

Dabo on Steele's departure.
“I like Chicken Nuggets……”
I hate you Off-season
Q&A
Q: Mr. Swinney, do you agree with Mr. Munson, or do you think that we can stimulate Clemson’s recruiting surge through temporary incentives?
[Long pause]
Swinney the Coach: As long as the roots are not severed, all is well. And all will be well in the garden.
Q: In the garden?
Swinney the Coach: Yes. In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring football and summer slush funding, but then we have fall games and winter bowl routes. And then we get spring and summer again.
Q: Spring and summer?
Swinney the Coach: Yes.
Q: Then fall and winter?
Swinney the Coach: Yes.
Don Munson: I think what our insightful young coach is saying is that we welcome the inevitable seasons of nature, but we’re upset by the football seasons peppered with Clemosn choke and quit losses.
Swinney the Coach: Yes! There will be growth in the spring!
Q: Hmm!
Swinney the Coach: Hmm!
Q: Hm. Well, Mr. Swinney, I must admit that is one of the most refreshing and optimistic statements I’ve heard in a very, very long time.
Don Munson Applauds
Q: I admire your good, solid sense. That’s precisely what we lack in Tiger Country.

That's how good rivalries begin.
Just the same, I hate em too. (And if we had taken care of business over the lost decade, this wouldn’t be a rivalry. TJ and a number of notable others would have been ours.)

"Clemson football is back, and we ain't going nowhere"
I love when coaches and athletes fail to see the double meaning of that statement.
