Can't Believe....
He left the court before the game was over… I felt really really bad for those 5 guys on the court…
I think it was smart.
I don’t know why people are making such a big deal about this…

Because Williams leaving the court showed cowardice.

How is it cowardice, Bud?
According to Williams, he understood that he, Ham, and the officials had agreed to call the game with 14.2 left, and he motioned to his assistants to bring ALL of the players in.
We’re talking about a coach who once went into the bleachers, toe to toes with a group of rowdy opposing students, to protect a player – and calling him a coward when he, the staff, a female manager, and staff spouses have already been assaulted or harassed by drunken, rowdy fans once this season.
If any mistake was made on his part, it was in not waiting until all of his guys were in before he went in. It’s my understanding that he personally apologized to the walk-ons after watching the gametape.

Because that’s absolute BS. He did not think the game had been called. All of the reporters covering both sides are laughing about this blatant lie he told today.

but he should have stayed out there with his other 5 players.

Completely Agree
Leonard was the one that went over there and asked Williams if he wanted to get his players off the court, knowing the fans would rush all over it. I think it was classy and respectful of Hamilton, and certainly not cowardly of Williams.

As mentioned above...
not staying out there with the remaining 5 players, and leaving the responsibility of their safety up to Coach Ham, could be perceived as cowardice.

I don't think that's exactly what happened.
That’s what the announcers said happened, but the post-game comments from the coaches don’t exactly validate that stance. Williams said something like “it was ALMOST Leonard’s suggestion.”
If a pouting Roy Williams walked over to Hamilton and said, “in the interest of safety I think I should take all but the last five players in the game off the court,” what was Hamilton supposed to say?
I’m not sure it was cowardice as much as poor sportsmanship from a coach who has exhibited some bizarre behavior in the past.
Didn't Coach K do something Similar..
When we upset Duke JJ Redick and Sheldon Williams Senior year?

i can see sending his team in early, but i would have thought he would have stayed out to make sure his players were ok…
And that's the problem
Send the kids under his charge with an asst. coach or two to the locker room.
No problem
Completely abandoning the 5 on the floor.
No Huebos.

It really had to be Roy's idea
I don’t see Hamilton walking over and basically saying “I have defeated you so soundly, do you just want to run to the locker room with 14 secs left?”
in the post-game ham said it was his idea -
or at least that he encouraged roy to do it..

"Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in"
I thought that was kind of a...
bush thing to do…I always thought that a team should win and lose together…live or die…etc…
But I recently read that a (NC) cheerleader was trampled once….kind of the same type of thing that used to happen when ACC fans rushed the field and tore down their goal posts when they beat us..
But I don’t recall Bowden leaving early….I see why (Williams) did it or at least I see his excuse but I am not buying into it too well (the excuse).
It was like he and his starters were above the humility when humility is a valuable lesson in college sports.
So that explains why it is an issue for some of us…or me anyway.

Other things that happened in the UNLV situation too.
Staff spouses and family members were harassed, and a druken fan attempted to provoke an altercation with Williams as he was trying to exit the floor.
The ONLY thing I can fault Williams for, on Saturday, is not making sure ALL of his guys came in before he did. Beyond that, I think, it just gets petty and Spurrier-esque.

I was thinking the same thing about Bobby B.
As for “ACC fans rushed the field and tore down their goal posts when they beat us..” Clemson still rushes the field, and pulls down their goal posts after just about any win. I think they even installed goal posts that come down automatically, because they will never understand the concept of; Acting like you have been there before.

Your Clemson comment is a misconception
The Tiger fans go onto the field after EVERY game, win or loss. Seems quirky, but it’s a neat tradition in my opinion.
I went onto the field after our loss, and there was zero chance of trampling. It’s a semi-organized process with security guards directing the flow of fans.
On the other hand, our basketball fans are utter morons. Case in point? That Duke game around 2004ish. Fans were on the court prematurely, as a play stoppage occurred with under 3 seconds.
Play was stopped, the court was cleared, then the final seconds ticked off and we rushed it again.
This idiocy helps me mitigate Roy Williams’ actions somewhat.
Side note: I watched us rush the court against Duke he most recent time. Security guards were going through the motions of “suggesting” fans not run on the court. It was a formality, as hundreds of students made their way past the compliant security.
But not one student. I watched this A$$HOLE male security goon in his 40’s single out one kid for NO reason. He put his hand on the the kids chest and wouldn’t let him by, as hundreds of others streamed past down the riser bleacher where the band sits.
He made the kid sit in a chair and sequestered him or a solid 5 minutes while the place was in euphoria. Literally stood in front of the boy with his back to the goal, the ultimate timeout enforcer. Kid almost cried, and I empathized.

I was working security at the first Duke game you mentioned. We were told at the last minute to “let the students have the court” Even with uniformed officers and plain clothes civic center security we could not have held that crowd off the court ,and management knew it. There was one Duke player that got lost in the onrushing crowd , but we managed to find him and get him off safely. We were told our mission was to try and keep people from getting hurt , but not try to stop them.
I wish you were buddies with "the enforcer"
Love to know what happened there from his perspective.
A frat brother once worked at the Civic Center and got a bunch of us to work the Tool concert.
We were the line or defense between the fans and the stage.
There were 2 main objectives given to us throughout the evening
(ad nauseum):
1) do no turn around and look at the bands. Head forward at all times.
2) confiscate all cameras in the crowd.
As a Tool appreciator, I did neither. In fact, the only time I was focused on the crowd was when my brother (real, not frat) was crowd surfing and headed towards the barricades at front of stage.
My only objective was to make sure no other security people roughed him up had he been passed beyond the bicycle racks.
Fun night.

One thing about that Duke game...
The clock read 0:00… Hard to blame students at a football school for not getting excited about rushing the court once the clock read 0:00….Somewhere I have pictures of that game where the clock read 0:00 then Al Thorton shot a pair of free throws and the score changed.
What really needs to happen is to teach opponents there are more then one way out and you dont have to traverse the entire court to get to the locker room.
If it is their tradition, that is one thing; but I am pretty sure the other teams, and coaches don't care for it too much.
It just seems like poor sportsmanship, tradition or not. If I am not mistaken, they even installed goalposts that come down automatically. I guess that proves your point that they do it all the time, but it proves my point also, that they do it all the time.
As traditions go, I don’t care for that one. It just reeks of, (This is new to me!), and (We Won, You Lost, Nanny Nanny Boo Boo!). That is just my opinion, I have never been there for a game, and I could have it all wrong. The other teams may know it is tradition, maybe they don’t get caught up in the middle the melee, and they may even think it is just great having all those fans running around screaming all kinds of stuff at them right after a loss.
It could also just be my instinctive hatred of most all thing Orange, there are a very few exceptions. It could also be that I suspect Dabo would rush the field after solving the puzzle on the back of a Cereal Box, tradition or not.
But I do get your point, I believe: They don’t make a conscious decision to do it, it just happens instinctively (Due To Tradition). No disrespect is meant, even if it is the end result.
Is that about right?
To be fair, I don’t think much of our fans doing it either; but at least it was after a huge upset, that was also a huge beating.

Looked to me like with 14 seconds left, Hamilton approached mid court and called over to Roy and said something to the effect of, “Damn we just beat dat ass. How does it feel when I break it off in you? Now get your old, white, frail ass off my court before these drunk kids knock you down and take your glasses.” So I’m pretty sure it was Hams idea.

I'm not sure we rush the court if Roy/Ham/whoever
doesn’t pull them off. It was the most orderly court rushing I’ve ever seen. Seemed like about 80% of the people who made it to the court just felt obligated to do it so they moseyed on down there.
no way, were you watching the game?
students started filing down to the tunnel areas with like 10 minutes left in the game. This was perhaps the most “orderly” court rushing, if only because it was the most inevitable. We rush about once a year now it seems (ie every time we upset Duke or UNC), so the students know the drill.
Paging Bob Sura.

good question -
or what if a member of the gpa squad had punched one of our players and been tossed from the game? would unc have brought in one of the lightly blue dressed fans as a sub?
Roy is a joke
Completely off topic but years ago when he first came to UNC I was sitting in the front row an hour before the game started. He walked by my friends and I. We yelled “Hey Roy” and he turned around. We proceeded to say, “How’s Carmelo Anthony and your national Championship?” (mind you this was before he won the tourny @ UNC) His face looked like we just told him his dog died. He proceeded to tell a security guard something and they came over and told us that if we said anything else we would be kicked out. Luckily we know the guard and since we did not use profanity they couldn’t really do anything to us. Just another example why Roy is bitter and classless. Sorry for the rant.
Congrats on the dismantling of the Tar Heels this weekend.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching Roy and the Boys walk off the court in shame!
Unfortunately, I found myself unable to sleep last night with nightmares of how we’re gonna be able to guard Dulkys!! Good luck tonight, I’m always glad to see non-Carolina based ACC teams make some noise in the conference.
I highly doubt
He can produce like that again. Not that I wouldn’t want him to, but that was lightning in a bottle.
