2012 Recruiting Discussion Thread #40 [CLOSED]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread. Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects. We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker. Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

If you post information from another site, please indicate from where you read it.

Specific Player Questions (Check here before asking)

  • Mario Edwards Jr.- Michael@TN reported that Edwards commitment to Florida State is again solid after the Unofficial Visit during the NC State 34-0 blowout. Edwards Jr will Official Visit Florida State on January 13.
  • Dante Fowler- His recruitment has been very interesting. He's grown up a Florida State fan, but still has ties to Florida. He's taken multiple visit to Florida, including this summer when he was rumored to be leaning toward Florida. He also took in the beating Florida received from Alabama in early October. He's remained a Florida State commitment, but is scheduled to take official visits to University of Southern California, as well as Louisiana State. Those schools should not matter though, as he's been quoted as saying it's down to Florida and Florida State. His recruitment should be something interesting to watch.
  • Dorial Green-Beckham- FSU is not in the race for this receiver from Missouri. His brother is very sick and he wants to stay closer to Arkansas. That means Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, etc. Not FSU.
  • Andrus Peat- One of the more intriguing players in this class. Although at first glance you question why a kid from Arizona with a brother at Nebraska would go to FSU, there is some interest here. Peat's grandparents surprisingly live in Tallahassee. FSU still isn't the favorite to get Peat, that's probably Nebraska, but it's not impossible for Peat to be a Nole come signing day. And there is no question that FSU would take him if he wants in. 1/4/12 update: Corey Long of ESPN.com is reporting he plans to visit FSU the weekend of January 20th.
  • Jameis Winston- is a Nole. There's no talk of him switching to hometown Alabama. There's no visits scheduled to Florida State yet (that are known of), but there are none to Alabama either. No need to worry about this point.
  • Mario Pender - from all our sources, he's enrolled and attending classes.

Official Visits

Been saving this comment, but with the Leonard Williams saga heating up this weekend, I think it is timely

I think I now realize what the coaches did last year. They got two OL recruiting classes for the position in one year. We took enough guys to use some as Freshmen while also redshirting a few. Now there will be several Sophomores next year and several Freshmen. The cost of course is that this year we had to depend on True Freshmen that otherwise would have been Redshirt Freshmen.

I think that’s almost exactly what we’re doing this year. We missed badly at DE in 2011. That was a crucial year because of what 2013 is going to look like. I think the idea behind going after a 4th dE here is to fill twp recruiting classes worth of DEs at once in order to provide the depth we will sorely miss in 2013 should we only land 3 (or even 2) DEs. This year.

What’s ridiculous is that we’re gonna be in the same crap position with OL next year.

I've considered this as well.

Perhaps we will be in better shape in 2013 due to some on-the-field success, etc.

Which OL took shirts?
And which of the 4 DE’s are you proposing take shirts?

by NoleLaw on Jan 17, 2012 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think Pettis was the only OL to redshirt

I know matias, hart, lovelady, Barron, and Jackson all played.

It wants its ridiculous wealth of DL talent back. But seriously, what a luxury to switch a kid who’d probably start next year for quite a few teams. Our DL depth is just filthy.

by Scalpemall on Jan 18, 2012 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

Casher, Fowler, Williams

Take your pick of any 2. We don’t need an 8 or 9 man rotation at DE. If we don’t redshirt any of them, it doesn’t per se change the depth situation in 2013, but it does speed up the clock on us bringing in more DEs in the future.

Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.

by AMFKNole on Jan 18, 2012 7:17 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

Rumor is that Hicks may move to TE

If that is the case then when Werner bolts earlier that leaves us with Newberry (if he is still at end) and whoever we bring in for 2013

by Nole300 on Jan 18, 2012 7:48 AM EST up reply actions

Disagree with your assesment of the OL in the Future

We will have the following SO and FR. Orelus, Pettis, Carter, Matias, Lovelady, Jackson, Barron, and Hart. That’s one hell of an underclass. With Stork, Krug, Glasier, and Faircloth and most likely Watson. As long as we get 3-4 in the next cycle, we should be Just fine. We paid the price this year but should reap the benefits for the next 3 years.

by MeBeFirst on Jan 17, 2012 11:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

OL

IMO, OL is a position that requires RS in order to be able to compete against the best teams. Therefore, we should bring in three OL each year, RS one year, get their feet wet one year, and then work in. A position needing to redshirt, signing 5 one year 1 one year, 2 one year, IMO just doesn’t work.

By going on Rivals, you can look at a team’s recruiting for all of the prior years and click on POS and it will put in in order so you can check who has been signing what position and how many every year. Alabama seems to sign 3 every year.

Bobby is coaching one team and Howard Schnellenberger is coaching the other team. It is for Florida or Florida connnected seniors. It is a nice showcase for kids who are not high on the recruiting boards. Is that the game that you were thinking of?

by Nole75 on Jan 18, 2012 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

You are right.

I re-read the article in the Sun-Sentinel. The game is for college seniors and is a showcase for State of Florida college seniors and Florida connected seniors who are not high on the NFL draft boards. I am an idiot. Thank you for correcting me. There it is, seven years of college wasted.

This recruiting season

Has probably been the most frustrating for me. In years past when FSU was down so were my expectations, so UF pulling top guys didn’t bother me as much. Now after two pathetic seasons and coaching turnover their class is outstanding. Them getting Humphries, Dunker, and possibly Avery where we cant get 1 highly touted impact lineman confuses me. I know we have Peat visiting this weekend but we’re hoping JW convinces him. Now their fully confident their closing with Diggs, Howard, Hamilton, Algholar, etc is unreal considering previous issues. Their class is extremely well rounded aside from QB (taking 2 last year) and RB where they missed on Davis. Between listening to them trying to flip Fowler every day for 6 months and deciphering what’s true or untrue about FSU recruits commitment status I’m ready for Feb 1st. Although having a good friend who happens to be a UF fan probably compounds all of that.

To be fair...

…even when we started the slide, we still got some big recruits based on past success/reputation. I think we had top 5 classes in 2004 and 2005. Not that they necessarily panned out…

by soliman on Jan 18, 2012 8:53 AM EST up reply actions

They definitely didn't have the skid that FSU had but

I still love our class more than theirs, we pulled in a ton of OL last cycle we don’t need many this time. We are addressing our needs and so are they.

by matticoti on Jan 18, 2012 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

Lasy year UF felt the same way

They lost Timmy J, JWJ, Waisome, Kelvin B to us and all had been considered UF locks at some point. We can only bring on about 20 while UF can bring about 30 depending on EE’s. This was going to be their year no matter what happened in recruiting.

Addressing the O-line i think a number of poeple are frustrated with that. R.T. is on the hot seat and another year like last year and he won’t have a seat at FSU. Man has been recruiting is tail off to try and make things look better.

I understand

And completely agree with you and B36. UF was definitely going to pull a class this year but potentially losing someone such as NA or Howard to UF is rough. TJ was brutal for UF last year I know. I always thought Hamilton stays close to home but heard UF is making strides lately.

Howard loves man to man coverage

Playing zone isn’t his cup of tea and if that is true I wish him the best 11 games out of the year. I think his mother is overly involved in his recruitment, and I always prefer to stay away from the parent who dictates so much. Get me Darby and I can take losing Howard in stride.

There's few dominoes left to fall with Blake

Devante Harris (who decommited from OU) committed on monday to TAMU leaving them with six DB commits currently. I think he’s possibly Blake’s replacement. Long story short I think the competition for Blake might come from OU as opposed to A&M. Just don’t see the Aggies keeping six total DB commits

that Winston sticks….the conversation is about Goldman and the lure of the AU DC….and not to stir anything up, but Winston is meeting with Bama coaches today….maybe just out of respect?…who knows…..I really like our class as is.

Can't disclose. But I've read multiple places that his trip to FSU really put us back on the map.

Bud once said something like, “If Agholor leaves the state, he goes to USC. If he stays, he goes to Florida.”

This may still be the case. But I get the impression it’s now a UF/FSU battle, should Agholor decide to stick around.

I really feel bad for Cal Bear fans now (even more so, I should say)

To find out that a guy who grew up near your school & stared there not only left just before singing day for an in-conference team(as you are assembling an epic class), but also was recruiting players for UW while still officially part of Cal, left while he was supposed to meet with a top recruit along with Tedford (did not tell Tedford he would not show up or be leaving at that time), and didn’t tell his current d-line. What a slimy bastard. I truly hope this kind of thing never happens here at FSU. I’m glad we have a whole crew of great recruiters too, and are not just dependent on one guy.

Recruiting Question Need Some Help On

When a player committs then signs LOI to be an early enrollee, then that prospect is counted as a recruit in the previous year’s class? If so, we then currently have 12 committments thus enabling us to land a few more prospects in the class. I just didnt know for sure so any replies/comments are welcome. Thanks alot tomahawknation!!

by FSUnolefan on Jan 18, 2012 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

IIRC

Roster turnover was a major goal for CJF when he assumed the role. If I understand this correctly, schollies are awarded on a year to year basis so there is a very good possibility that Jimbo doesn’t renew the schollies of a few underachievers. This would make room for some and mitigate any oversigning. I can predict a couple that wont get their schollies renewed, but this is a recruiting thread. Saban absolutely believes in roster turnover and I think Jimbo does too.

Me too.

WR, however I heard that Karlos Williams may be switching to offense and Newberry to offensive line. I have learned that FSU will take Louis either as WR or DB. With Newberry switching to oline and reported that Dan Hicks may switch to TE, frees up a spot hopefully for Leonard Williams at DE position on d.
