2012 Recruiting Discussion Thread #41 [CLOSED]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread. Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects. We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker. Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

If you post information from another site, please indicate from where you read it.

Specific Player Questions (Check here before asking)

  • Mario Edwards Jr.- Edwards Jr has Official Visit Florida State. The only other school in the running is Texas. Most question though if he could insult his father's school at this point. He looks to be solid in his commitment to Florida State.
  • Dante Fowler- His recruitment has been very interesting. He's grown up a Florida State fan, but still has ties to Florida. He's taken multiple visit to Florida, including this summer when he was rumored to be leaning toward Florida. He also took in the beating Florida received from Alabama in early October. He's remained a Florida State commitment, but is scheduled to take official visits to University of Southern California, as well as Louisiana State. Those schools should not matter though, as he's been quoted as saying it's down to Florida and Florida State. His recruitment should be something interesting to watch. Dante Fowler looks to be solid to Florida State; Leonard Williams is the only wildcard that may change things.
  • Dorial Green-Beckham- FSU is not in the race for this receiver from Missouri. His brother is very sick and he wants to stay closer to Arkansas. That means Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, etc. Not FSU.
  • Leonard Williams- Many people thought Florida State was done at DE. Perhaps not. Leonard showed out at the Under Armour game, and looks to be an Auburn-Florida-Florida State battle. Experts are saying Auburn at this point.
  • Andrus Peat- One of the more intriguing players in this class. Although at first glance you question why a kid from Arizona with a brother at Nebraska would go to FSU, there is some interest here. Peat's grandparents surprisingly live in Tallahassee. FSU still isn't the favorite to get Peat, that's probably Nebraska, but it's not impossible for Peat to be a Nole come signing day. And there is no question that FSU would take him if he wants in. 1/4/12 update: Corey Long of ESPN.com is reporting he plans to visit FSU the weekend of January 20th. Most believe Nebraska leads at this point.
  • Jameis Winston- is a Nole. There's no talk of him switching to hometown Alabama. There's no visits scheduled to Florida State yet (that are known of), but there are none to Alabama either. No need to worry about this point. As mentioned below, he will official visit January 20th.
  • Mario Pender - from all our sources, he's enrolled and attending classes. There is no need to worry about Tennessee.
  • Ronald Darby- Five star Notre Dame decommitment from Maryland. Should be a FSU-Clemson battle. Rumor has it that Florida State leads because of their track program, and he wants to play with WR Marvin Bracy (fastest high school runner ever).
  • AJ Leggett- will enroll at Marshall. He's not coming to Florida State, where he would've been a sign and place.
  • Early Enrollees- JUCO OL Daniel Glauser, RB Mario Pender, P Cason Beatty

I think we are waiting till closer to signing day for a new one, or until signing day.

I have the old ones still saved and can update them quickly, so no worries there. After the 150 comes out, I might go ahead and update them one last time till signing day. That will be the final rivals and final 150, I think. I believe 247 might have already had it’s last one also.

Sunseri’s depature likely did Bama no favors

by paperjames on Jan 19, 2012 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

If you want to call it a battle, sure.

Personally, I would give us 3 chances in 4 to land Goldman at this point.

Odell has put in massive amounts of overtime on this one and anything short of an Austin Marvin-type “screw you” at the last minute here would be a shocker.

FWIW

ESPN reported on their website yesterday that Goldman has shut down all recruiting contact and will make an announcement on NSD. They interpreted this to mean that he has made up his mind, and doesn’t want anymore salesmanship from recruiters.

Calm before the storm or reason for concern?

And we tell our kids that we have to form great habits and have great work ethic and form our identity as a team. Is he a “backup plan” due to our failure to lure JHC and Brown, etc? Is he a guy we should be excited about as a possible contributor/starter?

I don't think

he was expected to quite have the Sr. season he had (165 tackles 39 1/2 for loss). I think FSU was probably a bit guilty of underestimating him a bit coupled with the fact that we were fine taking just Eligwe before Jenkins’ issues popped up. Northrup said himself that FSU didn’t really pursue all that hard even after the offer and have only done so as of late (He sounded glad that this was the case). To put it in perspective: Northrup did very well for himself on the field this year and was considered by SOME to be neck and neck with Noor Davis as the best HS LB in Florida this year (Admittedly down year, but still).

I hate that this is a list of mostly "maybe's" getting together.

It would be better if there were more “absolutelies” in that list who could gin up excitement and work on the others. Too much potential for negative influence/persuasion by those who may be leaning toward other schools. But I’m sure Winston will do his part.

Small tidbit on MEJr

http://espn.go.com/colleges/texas/football/recruiting/story/_/id/7473253/texas-longhorns-commit-kendall-sanders-highlights-tough-choice-decommitting

“It’s a love-fest now, this recruiting game,” Webb said. “It’s handshakes and pats on the back and people telling you how good you are, how important you are to them and how bad they want you. You take those recruiting visits and you get treated like a king. For those kids who are early commits, they miss out on all that stuff.”

Edwards certainly hasn’t. He’s taken many visits and soon will get visits from coaches from Florida State, Texas and LSU, who will come to his home to make their final pitches. But Edwards also is quick to point out that he has never decommitted, and despite it all, his word is still good.

Sanders spent time with Edwards during UT’s banquet weekend. Hung around him a lot, actually. He thinks he knows what the No. 1 defensive end in the nation will do when he reaches the finish line.

“I think he’ll stay with his school,” Sanders said. “He loved Texas. We had a good time up there on his visit. But I think he’ll probably stay with his school.”

And though he’d love to play with him, Sanders wouldn’t blame Edwards. Forget the scorn, the critics, the recruiters. These days, a recruit has to do what a recruit has to do.

“And it don’t really mean nothing,” Sanders said. “Until you sign on the dotted line.”

Not the same amount of questions as you get on other prospects

Like the “Finebaum had a guest that said Winston would end up at Bama or Ohio State, WHAT’S HAPPENING”

On that front, Luginbill said it was Bama/Auburn/OSU/MLB for Winston.

Bama fan forums are saying this about Winston: think he sticks with FSU, Craig is a thorn in their side, Jimbo’s a good recruiter, FSU is setting up to be a power, and Jimbo is a good head coach who hit a few rough licks.

Weird to see Bama fans talk nice about anyone.

Contrary to popular belief

I have always felt there was a mutual respect between Bama/FSU.

Aside from the Bowden flirtation over the years, I think they took notice when Auburn bought their way out of the game against us.

Newest thing on ESPN Recruiting about Winston

With signing day rapidly approaching there are certainly plenty of storylines out there. One of the big questions is regarding Jameis Winston (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown), the nation’s top ranked quarterback.

Will he stick with his commitment and sign with Florida State or will he stay home and play for Alabama?

"I don’t ask Jameis much about what’s going on but I did the other day," said Matt Scott, Hueytown’s coach. "I don’t think he’s feeling it 100 percent with either team. He’s says he’s committed to Florida State, but I also know he’s strongly considering Alabama."

Winston made official visits to both LSU and Alabama during the season. He will visit Florida State (Jan. 20) this weekend after visiting Stanford last weekend.
It is very likely that Winston will not sign on signing day because he will be in Texas, his coach said. Scott said they don’ t have a date of when Winston will sign his national letter of intent.

"I would imagine it will be the day after he gets back," Scott said. "But I am not even sure what that day is yet."

First, I’m sure this always comes up, but I hate reading it the closer we get, is there really any chance of him wavering? I feel like baseball would be the biggest concern.

Second, should we expect him not to sign on NSD and pull a Terrell Pryor? Again, assuming he is FSU bound.

If life gives you lemons, go ahead and watch some FSU football.

Two days after signing day i believe

by FSU on Jan 19, 2012 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

His coach has always wanted him to go to Bama.

I think we solidify an already solid Winston this weekend.

Nobody is ever 100%. Ever.

They may be something ridiculous like 99.9% or something like that, but there is always a chance something can happen. That’s called life.

This looks like a bunch of coach speak that helps ESPN hype the recruiting season.

by pasadenanole22 on Jan 19, 2012 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

The preference for fax is because not everyone has access to scanners and it gives a definite time stamp both ways. The NLI has two places where the prospect and their parents size date and give the time when they sign. If it’s before 7:00a its invalid.

Regardless the actual paperwork has to arrive to the school – The Fax just allows the school to certify that the name is in and not filed by another school earlier. There is always the scare of simultaneous email, I suppose. (sent to two schools at same time and arriving simultaneously) Even a fax sent to two places arrived slightly differently [seconds] on older fax machines.

The reason I ask is that faxes are becoming obsolete in private industry.

For one, they are difficult to read, and A.) they waste paper.

by NoleThruandThru on Jan 19, 2012 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

In High School I believe(90% sure) Northrup played MLB while 2013 Daniel McMillian played WLB. Eligwe played out of position this year, playing QB, due to his athletic skills. From an athletic standpoint Eligwe might be the most athletic LB we have recruited the past 3 years and that includes James Wilder. He timed a faster 40 and vertical jump then Telvin Smith, James Wilder, Terrence Smith etc., but he also plays up to these times on the field. Eligwe is up to around 225-228lbs already(good weight, not fat). Due to his athletic skills, football IQ, and size to be at 240lbs he could play any position imo. I view him as coming in as a OLB/WLB.

So to answer your question Northrup I see as a MLB and Eligwe as a OLB.

I know nothing’s ever 100% until they sign the dotted line. But you tend to have
A) realistic projections who’s interested in coming
2) actual correspondence with the people involved in the recruiting process
D) a clear concept of who’s actually good.

Thanks

I don’t have to sell subs which is key. I don’t try to slant information to make a prospect seem more interested in FSU. Like one example is the Juco WR Courtney Gardner interview that we did. I could have left out that Arkansas was his leader(This was before he committed) but I wanted our readers to have all the facts even if it’s not what they want to hear.

It's January.

It is entirely possible that he took his tests recently and hasn’t received his scores yet.

by flfisher1423 on Jan 19, 2012 12:51 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

But he has taken a test before the Spring of his Senior year, yes?

Meaning he has some idea about how he’s doing (especially if he felt the need to retake). I’m just pointing out he gave an evasive answer. Don’t want people to gloss over that, especially when there have been concerns about this particular prospect for a while.

True.

But if he hasn’t qualified on previous attempts and hasn’t received his most recent scores he is still unsure, no?

by flfisher1423 on Jan 19, 2012 2:19 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Its a combination of scores (They take the highest combo) & core classes on a sliding scale. So they both need to match up correctly AND not have jumped too significantly or it may get red flagged

by FSU on Jan 19, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

FWIW

The “other” FSU sites that are reporting that Dalvon won’t get in are saying that it’s his Grades being the issue and not his test scores(I believe).

He is a kid and sometimes they don’t understand how important these things are even when Coaches/Family emphasize how important it is. Now I’m not saying that’s the case here, I just asked him once about his test scores/grades.

by Michael@TN on Jan 19, 2012 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Sliding scale combo with core, from what I understand. We’ll see what happens and we’ll see if anything gets red-flagged.

I know

Sometimes that happens look at D.J Johnson who I believe told most recruiting services at the time his grades were fine, so it does happen.

by Michael@TN on Jan 19, 2012 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

Another very simple information

Is that recruits aren’t always truthful about grades, offers, etc. Who wants to admit to ANYONE that they may not get in? I wouldn’t.

by CornNole on Jan 19, 2012 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

This is true

Especially on the offer part although some blame can go on college coaching staffs saying they have an offer coming which never shows up. High School coaches are to blame to because they will tell a service hey my guy just picked up an Alabama offer(get prospect more exposure) and you know other colleges pay attention to what colleges offer kids.

Not saying Dalvon is doing this because even his HC has come out to say he has good grades, but it does happen.

Is there any coach on Auburn he has that kind of rapport with? I ask because I would assume that if he has a great relationship with his position coach, you’d have to think his parents would push him in that direction.

His main recruiter Tommy Thigpen has a pretty good relationship from reports

Thigpen is known as an excellent recruiter and has landed 5 star players before including last year LB Kris Frost from NC. Personally I would give the edge to Odell since he is Goldman’s position coach, while I believe Thigpen coaches DB’s. It’s worth noting that Trooper Taylor is also helping with Thigpen recruit Goldman for Auburn.

MEJ and class size question

1. Is LSU a serious contender for him? It seems like he had this list of schools and as he visits them he eliminates them and my guess is LSU is up next on the chopping block. Not really worried here just curious

2. If FSU gets its wish list of prospects the usual suspects that are named and Peat does come, will FSU clear room or pull an offer from someone? Interested in how they make room if it’s needed

by nole your enemy on Jan 19, 2012 7:36 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

1) ME Jr has been solid to FSU since his visit during the NC State game week imo.

2) To my knowledge Jimbo has never pulled an offer from a kid. I don’t see that happening. I don’t see us landing every target, but if we did then they would make room by current roster player attrition imo

Since Jameis is allegedly signing the day after signing day

will he not be factored into all of the class rankings on rivals, ESPN, etc? Not that it matters, but the publicity, especially from ESPN, on class rankings is nice.

by mn nole on Jan 19, 2012 7:54 PM EST reply actions

Terrelle Pryor did the same thing, I think ESPN updated rankings after he signed.

He’s committed to FSU, so its not like he’s not already factored in. The after signing day adjustments would only be needed if he hadn’t committed yet

Not sure what you consider breath taking

Colin Blake is VERY interested in FSU and A&M is a mess right now. I will have a better feeling about him after I confirm how his in home with Snyder went.

Pretty sure that was worth taking, post auto-correct.

But I may be wrong, in which case it just sounds weird.

FSU Junior Day

Working on a list, but the Miami Columbus trio of RB Lorenzo Woodley(7 BCS offers), RB/CB Daryl Chestnut and WR Jesus Wilson are scheduled to attend. Wilson claims an FSU offer.

Technical question on MEJ's abilities.

I was watching some tape. How is it that a 300 pounder can “slide through” a gap, and they call it getting skinny….

Does that move make the end vulnerable to a OT pinching in and using his arms to shove him off balance?

Also, does the defensive end have to practice this alot, in order to avoid a cross over entanglement in his footwork?

Appreciate all serious answers….

Better Player?

Amari Cooper, Ricardo Louis, or Chris Black?

by seminole4 on Jan 19, 2012 9:12 PM EST reply actions

Good question

I’d say Louis, then Cooper, then Black, but the gaps between them aren’t large at all

We were all created to be Seminoles. This is why we bleed garnet and piss gold.

by NoleThruandThru on Jan 19, 2012 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

Cooper

Louis has the most “talent” but Cooper is the better WR. The gap between the actual receiving skills of Cooper is wider than the gap in sheer athleticism between Louis and Cooper. Amari is plenty athletic and as smooth a WR as they come. Makes things looks very easy

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 19, 2012 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

Cooper, Louis, Black in that order for me

by Bud Elliott on Jan 19, 2012 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Tricky b/c you ask "player"

WR: Cooper, Louis, Black
ATH: Louis, Cooper, Black

Honestly, not really much separation between them as WRs though. Probably 3 of the top 4 or 5 WR in florida. and 3 of the top 25 in the nation.

by FSuni on Jan 19, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

In order

Ricardo Louis- Why is he #1 for me? The other WR’s you listed have BCS type WR’s on there team to help draw coverage(Cooper has Elston Lane who has 5 BCS offers and Chris Black has Brandon Brooks) and who does Louis have to help him not be double teamed? Nobody. Those two players WR’s(Cooper/Black) also have D-1 QB’s(Chris Black has QB DeAndre Johnson and Cooper has E.J. Hilliard) throwing to them, now who does Louis have? Not a D-1 QB. Now after taking this in watch Louis film. In one word impressive. So he has very impressive film add that to NFL type combine #’s with a over 40 inch vertical jump and a electronic 4.55 40 at over 200 lbs, Louis is a man among boys.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/106054/ricardo-louis

2) Cooper

and a very distant third is Chris Black, who I don’t even have as a top 3 WR in state.

by Michael@TN on Jan 19, 2012 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Basically if you put Ricardo Louis in a program like First Coast he would do scary things.

I can’t name another D-1 player on the Miami Beach Senior HS(Ricardo Louis school) roster from this class to 2014 kids. I’m not sure if that program has had a D-1 prospect in the past 5 years.

by Michael@TN on Jan 19, 2012 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

Cooper is much more skilled (route running, hand eye coordination, and set up moves)

not to mention superior body control (To catch 50/50 balls)and runs a much more sophisticated route tree. Louis is a beast physcially but not nearly as skilled. Those are thinsg that are not determined by who’s drawing coverage or the caliber of QB throwing them the rock. Simply evaluating them as individual WR’s

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 19, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

Still more of a project (Granted, a very explosive one)

than a complete WR at this point. Scouts were still wondering about him being able to catch consistently this summer although it had reportedly improved during UA practices. He’ll be a work in progress where ever he goes

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 19, 2012 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

thanks

just wondering if we flip louis would he make us forget that black got away.

by seminole4 on Jan 19, 2012 9:34 PM EST reply actions

Obviously

It would have been nice to have both, but just from watching video from him, Louis seems to be a much better option IMO. I’ve always favored bigger receivers. You can’t teach a 5’10" WR to catch a fade like a 6’2" guy. Louis also looks to be a lot stronger with his body control (Black is no slouch either in that department).

If something happens and we don't get Northrup to flip.....

Would we consider S Miles (LB) if we could get Nelson A with him?
Any mention of other LB? other than Kwon and Clemons…

by FSuni on Jan 19, 2012 9:59 PM EST reply actions

Kwon and Clemons won't be here

I honestly think that if we somehow miss on Northrup, coaches will hold out til next year on LB with Moody switching to OLB

We were all created to be Seminoles. This is why we bleed garnet and piss gold.

by NoleThruandThru on Jan 19, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I know Kwon and JHC are not coming

I guess the question is more. If we only have one LB commit would be take Miles to get NA. Or just wait for 2013 with has a ton of LBs and WR/ATHs in Florida? Plus we should have a lot more spots in next years class (seniors and early NFLers)
