FSU Commitment Mario Edwards Has Eliminated Texas
And TE commitment Christo Kourtzidis is not going to visit Austin, either.
Jimbo 2, Mack 0 in 2012.
Edwards is an FSU legacy and is the top player in the country. He's an excellent athlete who dominates in high school, and even did a standing backflip for reporters two weeks ago... at 297 pounds (Thanksgiving and Christmas weight).
Florida State came at him from day one with the plan to play defensive end (not tackle), and the ''Noles showed how they used big ends this year with Bjoern Werner. Edwards should see immediate playing time, even with a loaded FSU dline returning.
That said, he does still have a visit to LSU remaining. But that's not guaranteed to happen.
Also, four-star cornerback Ronald Darby is down to FSU, Auburn, and, nominally, Notre Dame.

Really?
I cant get over the sight of him charting plays for his theta chi frat flag football team. Which we beat every time!!
Good news!

There is video of that backflip correct?
Somebody needs to GIF that! I would but I have no idea how.
Yeah, I would like to see the new video of him doing a back at his current weight

I especially loved this part:
And while the 300-pound Edwards could still play some at defensive end in college since he has managed to maintain his quickness, he’s not going to be the pure speed rusher at the next level that Texas really needs.
How do them sour grapes taste?

Very good news
Great athlete.
Not sure about playing on the edge though.
Maybe this year’s JWJ?
Faulty Comparison to JWJ. MEJ is not trying out for Running Back (or DT).
…he is intending to play the position for which he has been rated and evaluated by all the recruiting services.
Hope your right 54
but he looks like a future 1st round pick at DT. FWIW, I’m one of the pessimists that thinks
JWJ is not a top flight running back prospect and I’ve never liked LOS at safety and don’t think he has the shake and bake to play running back either. Great kick returner and once he’s running he’s really running. Like to see him on the outside on O.
To show you what a “glass half full” guy I am, I also love Bracy at receiver but am pretty concerned about him putting the ball on the ground.Know one game is not a resume but he looks like a track guy with some serious moves but can’t take a hit.
I probably get reamed for this but it’s just MHO.
Your ability to remain a true pessimist is admired by many here at TN
because you are never disappointed. You are either proven right or pleasantly surprised. :)
Great news.
I definitely didn’t expect to hear Texas was the team he eliminated. During the Under Armour week some guy(s) on that Recruitingcosm site were being very arrogant with their comments on MEJ going to Texas. They made it sound like he was already enrolled at Texas.
“80% chance” he was gonna end up at UT is what they said after his OV there….i would’ve taken those odds.
I was showed a tweet during the Under Armour game that stated (paraphrased):
‘Mario Edwards Jr. lays the lumber on future teammate Connor Brewer’ as if he was committed to Texas and not FSU.
Texas can get all the junior commits they want....
…but the suckas can’t touch FSU down the stretch :)

I don’t know why people have been freaking out about his weight. He’ll probably shed a lot of his bad weight once he’s in our S&C program. He’s definitely a DE, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he made a couple appearances at DT on passing downs.
Just think of it as MEJ just "sliding over" for a play.
or Brandon Jenkins running unto the field and saying, “Hey Mario, scoot over.”

Looks a bit lumbering at times
But he will play in the league one day, without a doubt. This guy disables ballcarriers like Luc did on his videos. This guy will abuse RTs in the ACC.
What are you glorifying with your life?
"lumbering"
Thought the same watching the UA game recently, Probably tired of being held though, lol
by Tonto's Revenge on Jan 19, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions
he was REALLY slow off the line at the UA game
he was literally the last man off, play after play. once he got off, he worked hard and looked good, but can that really be improved that much in S&C?
"I guess they have a reputation of being more of a tricky team and not being tough. You hit ‘em in the mouth, and they don’t like it. Other teams that have beat them just hit them in the mouth, so that’s what we started out with.’’ - Nick Moody
do you see Werner get off like Jenkins does, but still very effective. In fact most of those players take themselves out of plays much more often then they make plays.
The best thing about MEJ is he doesn’t need to get off extremely quick to be effective, but he will have to improve on this for sure.
Watching those clips
makes me want to ask the other teams coaches why they never attempted to even chip the monster. He was consistently abusing the tackles 1on1.
They did on several plays.
He just tossed them aside.
"If you want to see me, come watch me on Fridays. I play in pads."

to be fair
any DT who plays at FSU could have slid over and played DE in HS. Im glad we have him but i think he will not pan out at DE at FSU. I really hope he doesnt become another one of our average 5*s
D-Hop has tiger blood
I agree
He will lose weight when Vic gets ahold of him.
I think Edwards can have a similiar playing style to Bjoern Werner/Daquan Bowers.
when I say pan out
I mean be a beast. I see him turning into the Jacobbi of DE. I dont think he will be like Markus White. Hope im wrong
D-Hop has tiger blood
Isn't that essentially what a 5* is
A low potential to bust, high potential of starting numerous meaningful games at most any program.

Nah, I think if a 5-star isn't an all conference player, at least, then they have not measured up to expectations.
It’s a high standard but a consensus 5-star player is the elite of the elite.
I think your standard would be better applied to a typical 4-star.
*I missed and am still chewing on "at most any program," though..
but I still think that is below par. I could find guys starting on LSU or Bama that have not had collegiate careers that would have lived up to 5-star billing.
Doesn't have the physical limitations that have held JMac back.
Worst case scenario he balloons in S&C and becomes a very agile interior DL.
I don't put much stock in
the “wait to til coach so-and-so gets a hold of him”…sounds to Miamish. However, I have complete confidence DJ will have him playing at All-conf. level, at least. Even if he only gets him for one year.

That applies to some see Stevens, Toshmon
Some people have elite genes and can gain size/speed like it’s nothing. I just think Mario falls under this category, being Mario Edwards Sr son and having his genes will mean that a College S&C program will just make him that much better of a player.

On MEjr being a defensive end, I said this to the Texas folks
Really depends on your scheme. But if you get MEjr, you make your scheme work around him, because he can play end in the right system, and that system with him in it would be a huge headache for opposing offenses.
I didn't see this posted, but CB Colin Blake told me he will decide on his college Feb 1st
Blake OV FSU on 1/13. Working on an interview with Blake
What's you feel on him?
Has Texas A&M sent their coaches to talk to him yet (they have a new DC right?) I think they just got a big time DB commit (Addison something?) so maybe that’s good news for us.
"I spent 90 percent of my money on women and drink. The rest I wasted!"
I haven’t talked to Blake since Texas A&M new Defensive Coordinator Mark Snyder was supposed to do a in home visit this week with him(I should have something after this weekend). Blake said depending on how he clicks with Snyder will depend if he re-commits to A&M. He liked OU alot until they let go of his main recruiter and DB coach Willie Martinez.
The new big time CB is former Oklahoma commit Devante Harris who committed to Texas A&M this week.

I like Edwards on the edge.
Since FSU is always losing to teams that cling to leads and grind out 1st down in the second half (see UVA, BC pre 2011) it will be nice having some size on the edge to eliminate those types of losses.
Not saying that is how all of them happen but take away a teams ability to run for 3 1st downs in the 4th quarter and FSU is a lot closer to a couple of one loss seasons than the 3 or 4 we have had. Mix in the stud speed rushers were getting also and you have a complete 4 quarters of D Line play, no doubt.
Wow...
Edwards should see immediate playing time, even with a loaded FSU dline returning
He’s THAT good?
That's about how many Hicks got this year.

Edwards will work at DE
if for no other reason than the fact that we rotate players frequently and will do so even more in the coming seasons. How many right tackles are capable of blocking a pure power rusher like Edwards on one play, and then taking on a speed guy on the next? Having both types w/ 5* talent pretty much assures a mismatch in our favor every week.
Playing teams like WV and Clemson
Its really hard to sub D-line personel vs. these teams. Does this put us at a disadvatage as far as conditioning? I mean our guys will be so use to subbing in and out, but those two teams force you to keep alot of the same D-linemen on the feild throughout the series. I jus wonder would fatigue factor in a whole lot when our guys dont get spelled as much as they’re use to.
Noles4Life!!
Yeah, we looked fine vs. OU but kind of winded against Clemson
I was just wondering how much Haggins and Stoops rotation would change vs. up tempo teams like CU and WV. Would the guys in better playing shape see more snaps in a game like that? Jernigan may be 1 of our best tackles but maybe his endurance makes him take plays off, when someone like Cam Erving is not as good but has that high motor you’re looking for on long sustained drives. I know its all a chess game, but i was just wondering about some of our starters conditioning and how it would impact the ratation vs. those teams.

I strongly believe we win both Clemson and Wake Forest games last year.

I track with you and you may be right. However, foolish though this may be, I’ve always respected the late 80s and 90s ‘Nole teams as being able to overcome bad calls and smash their opponents anyway. Can’t wait for us to be back there.
Yeah, hopefully we are heading in that direction again.
'Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble this football.' John Heisman
We smashed Miami, but how often can refs alter the game 3 possessions and we still win?
How many tight games to Clemson/UF/UM in 90’s would have been losses if a Flanagan-type crew were out there?
I'd make the case for the refs costing us UVA more so than Wake
The missed calls were early, but they were awful even by ACC standards. And when it looked like we had them on their heels and could possibly go up 2 TDs early, the officiating destroyed any type of offensive rhythm we were building. And then when Jimbo lost it on them, the entire team just seemed to deflate.

I'm not even sure that they tried to steal it
I think that they’re just that awful. I say we get hyperactive chimpanzees to officiate our first 4 games next year and compare their results to the ACC’s in the Clemson, Wake, UVA, and Miami 2011 games.

UVA? That first quarter was abysmal, and took us out of sync.
taken out of red zone by non-calls on a blatant horsecollar/late hit combo noncall.
Don’t get me started.
I think we will be fine, we can sub between series and we have plenty of quality depth.
Not to mention I really don’t think there will be many sustained drives against this defense next year if we can get better officiating with the penalty calls.
Also I REALLY like you speaking in complete sentences now. I can read your post for the first time so I will rec it.
"The worst kind of non-smokers are the ones that come up to you and cough. That's pretty f*^@ing cruel isn't it? Do you go up to cripples and dance too?"

At least for this year
Both of those games will be at Doak, and the noise helps slow down those types of offenses (ask Oklahoma). On the road there could be some difficulty, that can be accounted for as well. Plus you can assume that most teams that play at that pace will have smallish lines. Think about the way Nick Fairley was able to almost single-handedly alter Oregon’s offense by physically mauling whoever lined up in front of him. MEJ’s size advantage could easily allow him to do the same from DE. Only difference is that we’ll have other elite linemen next to him as well.
by BobLoblaw113 on Jan 19, 2012 7:31 PM EST up reply actions
It will be a great problem to have.
Trying to get as many future NFL players on the field as possible. Christian Jones at Lb, Werner, Dawkins, Timmy J, MEjr, and Jenkins at the other LB. Who you gonna double? Who’s the TE gonna block? I know all the player/positions might not match, but daaaamn, that’s nasty…

by BobLoblaw113 on Jan 20, 2012 11:21 AM EST up reply actions
I also think they will be able to create a lot of confusion from a physical and mental standpoint
By mixing up the matchups. They did that a little bit last year with Werner lining up on both sides at different times and Jenkins playing almost a DE/LB standup position.
One play the RT is blocking a 300 lb bull rusher and then the next he has a 260 lb speed rusher passign him before he is even out of his stance.
I am what time, circumstance, history, have made of me, certainly, but I am also, much more than that.- James Baldwin

There’s really nothing the RT can do except hold. Now if we can start getting some of those called we’ll be in great shape.
