I wonder how much longer

he would have had, if all this sh&t had never happened. He still would have had lung cancer, but I am sure his will and his fight would have been stronger.

This is exactly what Bowden is afraid of

I’m going to try to remember JoePa more for his entire life than the last 2 months. I hope others will do the same.

Why?

He’s known about this for more than the past 2 months. The guy was a one of the best coaches of all time, as a human being though, I have zero respect for him

by mcgrawfsu on Jan 22, 2012 12:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

he was in a very tough spot

and he technically handled the matter properly by pushing it upstairs. His undoing was never going farther when those he reported to covered up. When do you make that move against your friend of 30+ years? He took the easy way out and his inaction was horrendous, but there was plenty to respect about the man.

by fmnole on Jan 22, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

Agree, until/unless I hear something new of the situation

It’s one thing to pass along information like that about your friend, it’s another thing to follow up vigilantly when you don’t hear anything happening about it. It’s no excuse. But it wasn’t an easy spot to be in and he possibly thought that the charges were followed up on and found bogus.

Did he know that the matter was mishandled by those above him?

by Nole2005 on Jan 22, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

If you consider yourself a man of morales, then this wasn’t even handled correctly. Children were raped and he knew about it. He told his boss and that’s all. If you could have asked Joe P what if it was his son? What do you think he would have wanted done and if it was handled correctly. On top of that he let this monster continue to bring children on campus and run a children’s charity.

Sorry but his actions spoke loud enough. Sacrifice the mental state of children so he can run what appeared to be upstanding program.

by nole your enemy on Jan 22, 2012 3:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Not all assumptions just how Paterno would have handled this if it was his kid. The rest is in the grand jury indictment and reports that Sandusky was with children in the Penn State facilities just a few weeks before the scandal broke nationally

by nole your enemy on Jan 23, 2012 11:32 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

He was not in a tough spot!

By his own admission, he knew that Sandusky was witnessed performing some form of sexual acts with small boys. He then shared SOME of the information with his boss (intentionally downplaying the incident), and never followed up in any way while watching this animal prey on small boys for years. I don’t see his actions as anything other then an endorsement.

did he intentionally downplay?

genuine question, not a challenge.

I know the basic outline of the story but haven’t followed the revelations, etc.

by Nole2005 on Jan 22, 2012 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

By his testimony

He did not say anything about a sexual act to the AD. He only mentioned “inappropriate behavior”.

This was not the last couple of months;

years of his life he spent doing this. The couple of months were when the kind of man he really was came to light. The young men who suffered because he did not stand up and do what was right deserve wishes of peace. His peace rests between him and his god. Hopefully that was squared away at the end, but I will not say RIP and my opinion of him is not mellowed because he died now.

by WaimeaNole on Jan 22, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

depends.

IF he knowingly and actively harbored the monster because they were friends, then his legacy is ruined. If he wasn’t vigilant enough in following up, then it was a big mistake but not malicious. It’s possible that when nothing came of the accusation he assumed that it was because the charges were found to be groundless. I can see where he would give his friend the benefit of the doubt at that point and just let the issue die. Not saying that it was the right thing to do, but there is a wide gulf between the two possibilities.

I haven’t followed the story closely so don’t know if scenario B is likely or not. It’s the only one that could possibly save Joe’s legacy.

by Nole2005 on Jan 22, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

It's funny how everyone is so quick to judge and vilify people...the man just died....was a great ambassador for sports in general for years and was one of the greatest coaches in any sport of all time...

I do as a human being wish him peace and hope that he has settled his debt with the man upstairs….Anyway it is Sandusky we should vilify to the max and that is what everyone is getting away from…. Let the man have his peace in death…he at the very least earned that….

Might I also add

That anyone who did not go straight to the authorities upon learning this information, even the grad student who was the witness, dies in shame as well. An all around despicable performance by what seems to be quite a few of the PSU staff.

And so for Joe?
the only children I have to worry about are my students…

So you admit to having some responsibility for others, but he had no responsibility for those in his facilities and somewhat connected to his football empire? That doesn’t compute.

I don't go around here being the judge, jury, and executioner for people....

If you want to do that WaimeaNole…..that’s fine by you….bash away….you’re within your full right to do that….but the difference between you and I is that I understand that it is utterly ridiculous to bash a dead man….in truth….what is it really going to do?….does it make you feel any better about yourself?…does it change your situation in life?….The man is dead….he made a mistake….albeit a huge one….but in reality….the only person that he has to settle with is god….that’s the only person IMO that is truly perfect…..Everyone including myself at times is so quick to judge…. When kids get in trouble….when players make mistakes….when coaches make mistakes….we talk about them like we personally know them….fact is we don’t and we need to stop acting like we do because it is both ignorant and stupid….

by Jerseynole on Jan 23, 2012 4:01 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don't think anyone is bashing him because he's dead

Seems more like they are stating that their opinion isn’t changing because he’s dead like some of the media. Personally, I too hope everyone involved with this is shamed and put in jail until they die. Some things can be forgiven, crimes against children cannot. Joe didn’t do the crime, but he still knowingly employed and assossiated himself and his program with a pedo.

This is the last time I will even respond.....

Your opinions are your opinions…..you believe what you want to believe…I believe in forgiveness and redemption….I also believe that human beings can be noble…but also flawed and imperfect….I also believe that if you live in a glass house…you shouldn’t throw stones….because we all have issues or skeletons that I’m sure we might be ashamed of….but what I’m saying is….is that there is no doubt that what joepa did was wrong…I don’t see the value of beating a dead horse….in your case WaimeaNole….joepa is dead…Sandusky will be prosecuted….the victims will have their day to face their abuser and gain closure and justice will be more than served…..case closed….move on….

I'm kind of selfish

I kind of wish that all of this news would have leaked out early so Bobby would have the all time win record and not JoPa.

The Comeback "Kid"

Bobby Bowden, Ends his Retirement as of 1/22/2012 to coach X team. For the next 5 years and breaks Joe Pa’s Record. Anything could happen. This also would have Joe Pa turning in his grave. I say all this because this is what I was thinking about when Joe Pa died and I can’t be the only Seminole thinking this way.

How about them Noles!

We shouldn't let the one horrible decision JoePa made erase the 50 years of good that he did.

Just like we shouldn’t let the 50 years of good erase the horrible thing he did at the end.

by Nole Resurrected on Jan 23, 2012 9:22 AM EST reply actions

Exactly what good did he do? He coached football and was paid handsomely for it. He wasn't Mother Teresa.

And you need to read up on the whole story. What he did goes back at least 10 years and presumably much longer than that.

by FSUjab on Jan 23, 2012 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

He was with the Penn State program for 60 years.

60-10=50.

Paterno changed ALOT of young mens lives for the better during his time there. There are countless stories from formewr players about how genuinel good Paterno was to them as people, not just football players. He was no Urban Meyer is what I’m saying.

I’m not downplaying his role in the Sandusky case. I’m also not laying more blame at his feet than I am Sandusky.

I think JoePa was a good man at heart who made a reallyterrible decision that he will always be remembered for.

I think he cared about his players as more than just football players.

by Nole Resurrected on Jan 23, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

I guess you're definition of "good" is different than mine. He was getting paid to coach.

His job was to make them better football players, better men. Why is it that he was a good guy for just doing his job?

Paterno also changed a lot of young lives for the WORSE for not properly reporting what he should have reported. Besides, you assume that Paterno didn’t know what Sandusky – who coached under Paterno for 30 years at Penn State – was doing. Even if he didn’t know, he was in a position where he should have known.

How do we know Sandusky hasn’t been molesting kids since the 80’s? You think he just up and decided he had a small boy fetish at the age of 50? I doubt it.

by FSUjab on Jan 23, 2012 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

I think Paterno found out in '98

and showed Sandusky the door right after that.
His job wasn’t just to make them better athletes and more mature, he was a father figure to an extremely large group of student athletes who were given the oppurtunity by JoePa and Penn State to get a quality education and a chance at a career in football.
He directly had a huge positive impact on thousands of people, more then most of us could even dream of.
However, he also played a role in the ruining of 20+ (maybe more) lives.
Neither should be forgotten. He did much more good then bad, however the bad he did commit was so awful, public, and the last thing we’ll remember about him since he’s now dead and can’t make up for the things hedid not, but should have done.

Did not show him the door,

just changed his position. He was still hosting young boys at PSU after he stopped being a coach for the Nittany Lions. That was a “spin” move.

Other than that, I mostly agree.
