2012 Recruiting Discussion Thread #43 [CLOSED]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread. Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects. We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker. Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

If you post information from another site, please indicate from where you read it.

Specific Player Questions (Check here before asking)

  • Mario Edwards Jr.- Edwards Jr has Official Visit Florida State. The only other school in the running is Texas. Most question though if he could insult his father's school at this point. He looks to be solid in his commitment to Florida State.
  • Dante Fowler- His recruitment has been very interesting. He's grown up a Florida State fan, but still has ties to Florida. He's taken multiple visit to Florida, including this summer when he was rumored to be leaning toward Florida. He also took in the beating Florida received from Alabama in early October. He's remained a Florida State commitment, but is scheduled to take official visits to University of Southern California, as well as Louisiana State. Those schools should not matter though, as he's been quoted as saying it's down to Florida and Florida State. His recruitment should be something interesting to watch. Dante Fowler looks to be solid to Florida State; Leonard Williams is the only wildcard that may change things.
  • Leonard Williams- Many people thought Florida State was done at DE. Perhaps not. Leonard showed out at the Under Armour game, and looks to be an Auburn-Florida-Florida State battle. Experts are saying Auburn at this point.
  • Andrus Peat- One of the more intriguing players in this class. Although at first glance you question why a kid from Arizona with a brother at Nebraska would go to FSU, there is some interest here. Peat's grandparents surprisingly live in Tallahassee. FSU still isn't the favorite to get Peat, that's probably Nebraska, but it's not impossible for Peat to be a Nole come signing day. And there is no question that FSU would take him if he wants in. 1/4/12 update: Corey Long of ESPN.com is reporting he plans to visit FSU the weekend of January 20th. UPDATE: Peat did not make the visit due to some family issue. Most believe Nebraska leads at this point.
  • Jameis Winston- is a Nole. There's no talk of him switching to hometown Alabama. There's no visits scheduled to Florida State yet (that are known of), but there are none to Alabama either. No need to worry about this point. As mentioned below, he enjoyed his Official Visit.
  • Ronald Darby- Five star Notre Dame decommitment from Maryland. Should be a FSU-Clemson battle. Rumor has it that Florida State leads because of their track program, and he wants to play with WR Marvin Bracy (fastest high school runner ever).
  • AJ Leggett- will enroll at Marshall. He's not coming to Florida State, where he would've been a sign and place.
  • Early Enrollees- JUCO OL Daniel Glauser, RB Mario Pender, P Cason Beatty
  • Colin Blake- has decommitted from TAMU. FSU, TCU, OU look to be the favorites.
  • Reggie Northrup- 4 star Miami LB commit... or so they think? Grew up a Florida State fan, and some insiders have him flipping to FSU. Comes from FSU feeder school First Coast (Jacksonville, FL).

Hearing it's a 3 team race now..

UGA, UF, and FSU.. Not sure exactly how good our chances but the fact that Lowndes produces a lot of FSU players can’t hurt.

JHC is listed has an Athlete on ESPN..

I know he played Linebacker in high school.. Did he play on offense as well? & What are we recruiting him as?

by Kenow92 on Jan 22, 2012 11:33 AM EST reply actions

That begs the question.

We see him as a LB. What does he see himself as? Has he given any indication?

by Nole75 on Jan 22, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Boy Lowndes can produce some skinny Linebackers..

He has a lot of room to put some weight on. 6’5" I’m excited.

Valdosta & County produces large amount of athletes for its size in general.

What’s the relative’s 40 and shuttle? Good hips, lateral quickness? Maybe we can grayshirt him.

In all seriousness, I think that’s so cool to be able to share an experience like that with a family member (presumably cousin or brother). It’s an awesome experience I doubt either will forget so good for them.

by Ocalanole on Jan 22, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

So how good of a sign is it that Northrup put on a Seminoles jersey?

I am not naive, and I know these kids get caught up in the moment; but for a kid that is “Committed to Miami” to put on a Seminoles jersey, that has to mean something. Doesn’t it?
Pay no attention to MEJ putting on at Texas helmet.

It is hard to overestimate how significant the advantage you gain from being underestimated.

by Chief Pit Bull on Jan 23, 2012 5:52 AM EST up reply actions

Not really

I would say most kids put on every jersey that’s offered to them. Plus Northrup grew up a FSU fan.

by evenflow58 on Jan 23, 2012 7:48 AM EST up reply actions

So growing up a fan, then seeing the jersey on. There has to be some emotional response that could help.

by Noles3 on Jan 22, 2012 11:56 AM EST reply actions

Care to elaborate, Bud?

Any specifics? Sounds like JHC had a great visit as well, but would love to know more if possible. Been quiet this weekend on the recruiting front with the exception of a few tweets and texts. No one has posted any detailed stories on it yet. Also, if we get Peat in next weekend (never really thought we’d land him, but anyway…), are there any more visitors coming? Last weekend before NSD, figure we’d do well to have the last crack at some of our targets. Also, any further info on Watson? Seems like a lot of folks just assumed Watson was ours but nothing concrete has come out regarding his status in the past week or so that I can remember.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 22, 2012 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

LB

I view JHC as more of a strong Safety type and Nothrup as more of a pure LB, It may depend on what the coaches think as to who would fill out in a couple of years to play at. We want big DB’s and JHC is an athlete.

Player-recruiters?
Of the verbally committed, who are working hard on Clemons, Peat, Darby and the other potential Seminoles?
One more question as I wrap my mind around the growing influence of TN. . Could someone who is in the know weigh in on the influence this terrific site has on the very recruits we discuss?
Do they read these threads? Do they ever contribute? Should we keep the impact of what we say about the recruits, in mind?

Northrup

Im sure im very late, but I just watched some film on Mr. Northrup and I am impressed, of course he has some plays where he uses poor leverage and still dominates(where as in the college game that wont be the case, and you dont want bad habits that will take time to fix) but what encourages me are his feet, his feet allow him to get to the spot on time. Sometimes we tend to get caught up on 40 times and forget about quickness and actually playing football, but this kid is a football player. Im sure im late and all but I really like Northrup

You mean only, right?

Would you really be okay with losing Dante because of some percieved drama? For all we know he’s playing UF to make us look better on TV when he picks us..hell, he’s a kid, who knows what he’s thinking. Anyone stupid enough to WANT DFjr to go to UF because he’s not stroking the collective ego of Nolenation should just observe until they can contribute something worth reading. Not saying you’re that guy, but this time of year people can sound so ridiculous..just sayin.

I think it’s just people are tired of the excessive flirting with UF and the fact he was telling people last week that he is committed to FSU and will be wearing #16 next year.
I know he is a kid but I don’t think it would be fair to either staff if he is jerking with them.

Im tired of what i percieve to be flirting as well.

Just dont think its wise to rip kids on a public forum. I also have noticed as ive abstained from meaningful convo for a while how sheepishly people behave. Its frustrating when you know most casual bloggers dont know much AND these kids read what most casual bloggers read. Its like this, imo, if you wouldn’t say something in front of a kid who can help your team win, dont type it.

I just don't want all this drama,

to stick around during his time at FSU, b/c that can be harmful to our whole team. I certainly do not want to give one of our best recruits to UF, but I wish he wasn’t vying for attention constantly. And I would rather have him be more low-key and stop all his drama than “make us look better” by teasing UF. Personally I couldn’t care if he wants to toy with the Gatas, He should just stop making such a big deal out of himself.

Just wanted to summarize and put into context what some people see as knee-jerk reactions and some things that aren’t so knee-jerk and really touch nerves with people who have followed FSU recruiting for years. I did my best to be fair to Fowler while also putting some things into context regarding past cycles – similarities and differences. In my mind, it’s a judgment call, which I’ll leave up to Jimbo and the coaches. Should the recruit decide to read the post, it is also an admonishment that raw ability alone does not a great player make – see Mr. Rouse, Mr. Fortson, Mr. Downs, etc. The prize is not being heavily recruited. The true prize comes years later, once a player has proven himself in D-1 ball, interviews well for the next level, and becomes a prize draft pick. There are plenty of players who are more sought after than Mr. Fowler who have not gone his route and will be instant fan favorites because of their ability and their handling of recruiting. I think Mr. Fowler should look beyond the recruiting cycle – look long-term if he has decided where he will play and see what he can do to win fans over rather than antagonize those who would otherwise support him if he should falter. At some point, Jimbo will say enough is enough and I do not think it is in Fowler’s interest to let it get to that point. I’ll let Jimbo draw that line but I also wanted to summarize and put into context what appear to be knee-jerk reactions to various things. Considering the body or work and events, there are legitimate concerns. Fowler’s ability and talent are questioned by anyone. His conduct and behavior are the kind that touch nerves of some who have been around longer than Fowler – with the prime example of someone committed to FSU drawing hats in front of a national audience. Last time that happened was when Elam flipped back to UF at the AA game. Not a way to win friends and influence people. C.Jones was different b/c he had never committed to anyone.

as for the original question, since he would enroll in January, he’d prolly be on the team at that point and would probably get a ring.

How common is it for teams to have two scholarship kickers/punters simultaneously for the same position (ie, Powell/Beatty or Hopkins/Aguayo)?

by ttubasketball on Jan 22, 2012 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Powell is already done, so no overlap there

and this will give us Aguayo for 4 years after Hopkins finishes; makes perfect sense to me as long as one of the walk-ons is decent enough to cover an injury week, just in case

by WaimeaNole on Jan 22, 2012 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree and I know there was no overlap with Powell. I was just curious how common it was for a team to have two scholarship kickers or punters simultaneously.

by ttubasketball on Jan 22, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

not unusual

To sign and redshirt a kicked or a punter where the redshirt year overlaps with another’s senior year. Typically done to guarantee a replacement ready to go, or when there’s a thin class the next year

by Wild@Heart Nole on Jan 22, 2012 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

the walk ons aren't exactly confidence inspiring

I’d rather have Bama’s kicker circa LSU game 1, kicking lefty, balancing an egg on a spoon in his mouth, while juggling flaming chainsaws

"But they understand expectations don’t win games. And just because you’re picked to win, they don’t give you the trophy when the season starts. And we tell our kids that we have to form great habits and have great work ethic and form our identity as a team. We just have to reinforce that everyday because as we tell them, the pressure of expectations is only there if we aren’t prepared for them. If we prepared for them and we’re prepared mentally and physically, the pressure of the expectation won’t bother us." - Jimbo Fisher

by Sem1nole on Jan 23, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Are you saying this

because you have seen them kick and were driven to concern or because of the term walk-on? (serious question) There are actually some pretty good kickers sitting at schools like FSU who went there for other reasons than football.

It allows FSU to take another recruit this time without having to get rid of a current roster player. FSU still has the academic cheating scandal failed classes in its APR calculation. I can name 10 guys who would be gone at a Bama or LSU, but FSU cannot do that right now because of the APR concerns. This opens up additional room without hurting APR.

But i do appreciate, if not hard work, then the tedious work it takes to moderate and manage these boards.

I know its a pain to have to make a new thread every 400 posts, and frustratingly so when you have 200 rhetorical come-backs, on the other hand if you let a thread get up past 800, the people start complaining about loading times.

I cannot promise I will always remember, but I respect and agree with the board rule to keep the recruiting threads a little tighter than they have been, for the sake of the moderators sanity and Bud’s in-box.

Have some free time today so I'm gOing to try and get ahold of CB Colin Blake

As most know he finally eliminated A&M. Not sure why most recruiting analyst thing OU is the team to beat which I disagree with. He had a great connection to Willie Martinez(OU)main recruiter. Which is a big deal this late in the game and Martinez was his position coach. He did tell me he liked the atmoshpere in Norman. I really feel it’s between TCU and FSU. TCU made up a lot of momentum by hiring DB coach Chad Glasglow. He also has a good friend at TCU in CB Kolby Griffin. Distance won’t play a huge factor as Blake has move around a lot in his life(from England I believe)

The point is that Fowler has done nothing worse than MEJ, yet several people here criticize Fowler and not MEJ. Personally, I think what MEJ did was worse than what Fowler is doing, hence why TN even took MEJ off of our “committed” list. I have no problem with Fowler wanting to pick a hate on NSD. If he picks FSU, it will be great to have an appearance on national TV. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him and every other player fortunate to have it. Let him have his moment. He has said several times in the past few weeks that he is solid to FSU. I really think we need to stop bashing him. I am getting off my soapbox now haha.

Additionally,

I agree with you - I was just pointing out how much of the MEJ talk is misinformation by supposedly legitimate recruiting services

I agree that Fowler will sign with us. He had a period where a flip to UF seemed possible, but that’s long behind us. Every comment and interview points to him signing with us on NSD.

Like I’ve said before, an 18 year old boy realizes he can put himself on ESPN, and text girls to tell them he’ll be on ESPN. He’s not attention seeking at that point – he’s smart. Chicks dig the hat pick.

Don’t get your Natty in a knot. This close to NSD tread lightly on potentially sensitive student athletes staff are trying hard to recruit. Who knows whether young recruits follow our ramblings, or hear of it from others? (that question is rhetorical)

Those "potentially sensitive student athletes" are entering the world of college football.

If posts from a message board upset them, how do you think they’ll fare from regional or national media stories?

I’m not too worried about them getting upset over message boards. These kids have thick skin and if anything, should let negative comments motivate them.

Finally, if you’re going to act foolish publicly, be prepared for negative attention.

I dont have the “discussion board cred” yet to explain to some folks here that the frustration with DF is nothing new and that it has been a pervasive theme throughout the cycle. It seems as though there is this sudden sensitivity to the issue. Please explain, as only you (and possibly a few others) can that there will be no ground swell of support for the way DF has handled his recruitment. Thanks

I'm not even talking about on field performance

This is a recruiting thread. Therefore I am keeping my comments isolated to only his recruiting. He struck out in 2010. He’s in the process of striking out in 2011. 2009 was really nothing to write home about. He’s had the least recruiting success of our entire staff.

Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.

by AMFKNole on Jan 23, 2012 1:09 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

The fact that you think 2009 was nothing to write home about destroys any argument you are trying to make.

And if you count family emergencies, 4-stars who show up 60lbs overweight, and 4-stars who decide after 3 weeks they miss home, all leading to transfers striking out on the recruiting trail, then there is no reason to debate because you’re dismissing the fundamentals of recruiting, which is getting talented guys to sign up and make it to campus.

Trickett has done that.

Now if you want to talk about development or how he handles his players, that is a different story, but I feel that he has recruited better than he is getting credit for.

So you're argument, if I'm reading it correctly, is that signing a quality class every two years is acceptable?

Attrition is something he can’t control. Neither are injuries or Aubrey Phillips’s eating habits. But our reliance on, and therefore waste of one of Bobby Hart’s years of eligibility, falls on him taking Foose and a whole lot of nothing in 2010.

Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.

by AMFKNole on Jan 23, 2012 1:28 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

For Bobby Hart to play there were many more problems that had to occur that had nothing to do with recruiting

But I will agree recruiting is a part of it.

And if by quality class you mean #1 in the country then yeah, I’m cool with that.

Attrition and injuries are impossible to control, but if there was not an impossibly large # of both then we would not even be having this discussion. I’m simply saying that every team in America would be doing this if they had 6 of the top 9 players go down in a year.

demanding more out of his friend

weak retort, IMO, shifting the issue from recruiting to something else…now sure what. Look I don’t like Trickett’s personality and think it’s counter-productive in many cases, but OL recruiting is a collective responsibility that—like all things FB-related—stops with the HC. The performance of the 2011 OL was a byproduct of horrible injuries and players recruited by Bowden, who recruited almost every position poorly toward the end of his HC career, not just OL. In fact, FSU isn’t known as a mecca for elite OL unlike some of our in-state rivals and other regional programs.

Championship!

by TLHWG on Jan 23, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

I was saying that our OL situation being Jimbo's fault would be largely because Jimbo has allowed Trick to get away with "waiting for senior film" and taking "Trickett specials" for years.

Clearly Jimbo (anf most likely Trickett) can evaluate talent. It’s done successfully year in and year out at every other position. If kids don’t want to play for a guy with a hard personality, I can understand that. But I don’t think that’s really the issue. The issue is kids don’t wanna come to a school where they have less of a relationship with their future position coach (more often than not) when they can go somewhere equally elite and they’ve known the guy who will be coaching them in college for a while. Look at Odell. His region isn’t Maryland, but it’s his relationship with Goldman that’s gonna land him. Yes, recruiting is done by region but to assume that Trickett has nothing to do with our failing to sign kids who play OL but live in someone else’s region is to be willfully blind.

by TLHWG on Jan 23, 2012 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Great points guys

Together you two have summarized the situation in a realistic manner. I appreciate how you highlighted Jimbo’s specific faults. I think a more succinct way of putting it is to say that Jimbo has allowed Rick Trickett to continue using his methods. Regardless of how much weight you place on waiting for senior film or the unpleasant personality, it comes down to relationship building. If you do not start early enough, strong coach-player relations cannot be adequately built. Moreover, his gruff and occasionally cruel demeanor is not going to help when you get on a kid late. Perhaps it would work for a goober like Dabo, but not out RT. Then again, if he were to approach and heavily recruit offensive lineman early, his personality might turn off some high caliber prospects. In the end it comes down to personality, which is more important to recruiting than coaching.

Go tell it to Moses.

And I'm not confident Clemson has an S&C or training program that will help him stay out of injury issues, good rehab, etc.

He got a raw deal going to Clemson. Their clown HC fired the DC for the performance of players who were out of shape, and getting beat up physically. They were out of shape because of poor S&C, don’t tackle hard or shed blocks because of a soft practice philosophy.

Kevin Steele and Tony Steward got screwed by administration nepotism (Batson, S&C coach has an uncle on their BOT).

So losing Tony wasn't all bad.

All bad in what sense? In the "he won't be burning us" sense, I suppose.

I think with our S&C/athletic training program/staff, we would have a better chance at helping him rehab his knees, come back strong, and have a good career.

These areas of a program are vastly undersold. A GOOD $200k S&C coach makes the other coaches look a lot better. We have an excellent AT program in place. Excellent nutrition program in place.

Can Steward’s knees be saved, and have longevity for his career? We’ll never know. But I think he’s not going to get his best shot to do it with the staff Clemson has.

Lots of people debate taking fowler or williams on here.

I have stated for a few months now that I want both. I have mentioned that I believe fowler and casher both could be used some at linebacker on certain downs. My prediction that we land williams and fowler stands. I’ve heard from some sources that fowler was the one most likely to do this. Reports now seem to be that the coaches have mentioned this to casher and he likes the idea. What are everyone’s thoughts on this? I think we land all 4 DE’s with Fowler and Casher seeing time in the hybrid DE/standup role.

The idea is to turn one into Brandon Jenkins

I personally think Casher’s upside is much higher and he’ll play the bigger role for us.

I think fowler’s lateral movement is better though, i think he is more able to drop into some light coverage. Casher would be a better run stopper though.

Unless it is something that would negatively impact chances with Edwards or Casher

I would take Williams right now and let whatever happens, happen in regards to Fowler.

I just don’t want to see us miss on Williams if Fowler wants to make headlines with a swicheroo on national signing day.

My point kind of is that I believe the coaches are telling them.

Yeah we are recruiting 4 DE’s still because 2 of you can play a dual role. Those we aren’t really taking 4 “solely DE” DEs. I think this helps us keep fowler on board even with the addition of Williams.

Wonder what Bama will say about this
“My commitment to Florida State got stronger this weekend,” Winston said Sunday. Why? Try a “war” with Nerf guns between Florida State’s staff, their families and prospective recruits. Those that know Winston realize that’s a smart strategy that meshes well with Winston’s playful mentality. Jonah, his 4-year-old brother, joined the Parade All-American quarterback in pelting current and future members of FSU’s program. “We all played with Nerf guns in Coach Fisher’s house,” Winston said. “Me and (FSU verbal) Marvin Bracy were running around his house shooting people up.”

by az5950 on Jan 23, 2012 11:40 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

Very funny...

According to the writer the reason Winston commitment is stronger is because he played nerf gun war with Jimbo. I think the family atmosphere is why Winston knows FSU is for him…playing silly games was just part of that.

Not a surprise

that Casher and Shanks didn’t want to play in a 3-4. Winston is going to FSU because of the baseball program and his desire to play both. So 3 guys from Alabama. Bottom line is that I really like Bama’s class. We have 3 of the top 5 inside LBs in the country committed and 2 of the top 3 safties in this class. I believe that we are always going to have trouble landing the big 5 star D Lineman playing in this scheme. I don’t think we get Goldman either but that is just a gut. I still believe he is between FSU and Bama but I wouldn’t count the barn out either.

As much as Saben does not want 2 sport athletes

Winston would be allowed to play baseball. He is coming to FSU because Jimbo is a very good QB coach. Has a track record for QB’s. He had great expiriences in his visits, and time spend with EJ at competitions. The baseball team he knows he can play but that I dont think was the deciding factor. I think he just felt more family with FSU. Combined with so many other top comits he has gained relationships with and what he sees as a very real place to be at and be in place at a time of the school being truly elite. And feels he can be the one to lead. He has been told I am sure exactly the plan. But for FSU to get the #1 QB, a top 3 if not #1 DE from Bama, And take those players is gigantic.

there is a big difference between "being allowed to play"

There has been no official or unofficial visit, but hes from Maryland. He knows about us, and if there was any surprise warranted to us from the karma gods from last year’s ACC officials and the injuries, he would be it…

Diggs versus Eligwe

nothing LEADS me to believe it; I see a shocker recruit leaving (imho that is Eligwe because of the defense grabs we take and not sure he wants to wait for PT) and a couple shockers who did not OV, but will make the list (Diggs and Long)

Once more, this is a mock. I added all of the recruits who had interest in FSU in the top 150 out of courtesy for some readers who miss what is posted…

Just curious on how this works...

But regarding Darby, since he is also a track guy, could he possibly sign a track scholarship as opposed to a FB one in order to free up another scholarship? The same for Bracy too? I just didn’t know how that works. Could be good strategy for Jimbo, no?

by FSU@UNF on Jan 23, 2012 12:45 PM EST reply actions

I believe the rule is

That which ever sport has more scholarships is the sport the athlete counts towards. Since football has the most the rule generally hurts football. But if the two sport athlete played something like baseball and basketball it would count towards baseball.

ESPN moved FSU up to #2
Jimbo Fisher and Florida State keep moving closer and closer to the top spot in the rankings.

With the recent addition of former Auburn ATH commit Ricardo Louis (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach Senior), who is No. 21 in the ESPNU 150, and a big (literally) supply of talented defensive linemen, led by the nation’s No. 1 player Mario Edwards (Denton, Texas/Billy Ryan), the Seminoles leapfrog Texas and move into the No. 2 spot. FSU, with 10 ESPNU 150 prospects in its 16-member class, sits just behind Alabama.

Remember, there’s still some time before national signing day. These Class of 2012 rankings are based on who has committed so far and are not a projection of how strong a class will finish. Changes to the rankings will be made as more prospects commit, and how teams finish on national signing day is really the only ranking that matters.

But as always, let the debate begin

Lookin’ goooood, Jimbo.

The guys we have a good chance at makes it look like this NSD will be a fun one.

by jmnpb996 on Jan 23, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know if ESPN has ever not put as #1 the team that had the most ESPN150 commits. Right now that’s Alabama, I believe, although FSU is in good shape to catch up. The wildcard, of course, is that Alabama is taking yet another giant class and FSU is more limited, so it will be interesting to see if the half dozen extra recruits makes it impossible for FSU to catch Bama regardless of the ESPN150 count.

by whodoes on Jan 23, 2012 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

FSU will most likely at best pull 2 to 3 more ESPN 150s

Thats 12-13 in the 150 and considering the small class I say FSU’s group will be as good as any other class, including Bama’s.

3 Team Race for Josh Harvey-Clemons

From Jamie Newberg of ESPN (this is the free info, evidently their is more in the Insider premium portion): It’s now a three team race for the nation’s top outside linebacker prospect.

According to Josh Harvey-Clemons’ grandfather, Woodrow Clemons, the Florida State visit was enlightening.

"Wow, we were not anticipating that," Clemons said. "Florida State was very surprising. I know he loved the facilities, the coaches and that program is back on the rise. They have some great young players and there are great players in this class. I know we met the top quarterback in the nation (Jameis Winston). He was there. I am curious too.

Would he essentially be considered an EE for 2013 and thus have the ability to count for 2012 or 2013? If not then what is the point of grey-shirting, just waiting another year to start the eligibility clock running?

by seminolecpa on Jan 23, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

my best guess would be

Jimbo expects some extra attrition, maybe after spring; some upperclassmen will get beat out and may want to transfer. By giving Aguayo a greyshirt, you’re able to take another guy now and still have the extra schollies to give once the other guys leave, at which point you can award one to Aguayo.

Someone more in the know please correct me if that logic is wrong.
