Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

Jeff Cameron is leaving 1270 WNLS to pursue other opportunities.

Ultimately, Cameron is way, way too talented for a media market as small as Tallahassee. 'Nole fans were very lucky to have him for as long as they did (12 years, I think). I was a faithful listener since '03, and tried to listen every afternoon when I could. Jeff kept me sane, and entertained during long hours studying in law school.

I know that his station and the brass above them won't realize what a big loss this truly is until they get next quarter's ratings.

Cameron is honest, funny, insightful without alienating his sources, and most of all, a 'Nole.

The Babe Show is absolute misery.

by ACCMarcus on Jan 24, 2012 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

The Fabulous Sport Babe is the worst Tampa sports radio show ever

Or at least the worst since the Hooters Girls radio show.

I actually liked the Killer Bees when they were on in Tampa, even though they were DIE HARD Canes fans. But if Cameron is coming Tampa, I really hope he replaces FSB….or PrimeTime for that matter.

Was it his decision or the station's?

The way this post is written it sounds like it was his decision, but given that he isn’t having a farewell show, is no longer on the station’s website, his FB page has been taken down, and what’s written on the station’s FB page, it seems like he was fired.

by jfsu on Jan 24, 2012 2:25 PM EST reply actions

His parting ways would be like having your lead IT professional quit.

You let the IT guy go immediately, so he won’t screw up your computer system.

If this wasn’t an amicable split, the station and clear channel sure wouldn’t give him a farewell show to vent.

by davisp3 on Jan 24, 2012 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Makes me think he's staying in Tally and going to a competitor

Could he be going to the ESPN station? Why else would Clear Channel tell him to GTFO so quickly if he were going to another market? Maybe I just don’t understand how radio works.

by Pinto on Jan 24, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

Non-competes are unenforceable in FL

FL is a Right to Work state. Any non-compete clause you sign in the state is therefore illegal.

Had a guy at a radio station I used to work at who came from across town and his old gig tried to prevent his hire by pulling his non-compete. He fought it and it was dismissed. Started work the next day.

by ScottyDoesntNole on Jan 25, 2012 1:31 AM EST up reply actions

No doubt

And agree with you on Dan Patrick. Funny, relaxed, knowledgeable, and literally everybody in the sports world will answer his phone call.

As to JC, I don’t think this was a matter of choice for 1270. Very few people choose to leave mid-week without saying goodbye. The signs point to something like management finding out he was talking to other people behind their backs and cutting him loose.

If I’m wrong, well, I’ve been wrong before.

I'd love to have him here in Atlanta

but recruit wise, he would be a more effective ambassador for FSU in a major Florida market. Tampa or South Florida would be great but I’m sure he’d be personally conflicted having to promote the Canes if he lands in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale MSA.

but Teenage Wasteland and Radio Clash will always remind me of Jeff

every time i hear Teenage Wasteland, i want to yell “good afternoon aaaaaaaaand welcome everybody, this would be the Jeff Cameron show”, and Radio Clash brings up “final hour of the Jeff Cameron Show, at least for today”. i didnt hear it yesterday, but i wonder if he didnt say the last part. i always wondered what he would say at the beginning of the last hour of his last day.

Really have mixed emotions about this

I never liked the guy too much personally (that’s what I get for working with his ex-wife while they were getting divorced), but I can’t deny that he became a really good home-team sports host, and so I will merely wish him well wherever he does land.

If he’s gone he’s gone, but I almost wonder if he’s going to pop up across town. Most in-market non-competes are for 6 months, so if he DOES follow the terms of his non-compete, it’ll be midway through the summer-and just before football season-before he’s able to resurface in town again.

I’m just speculating here, but if Cameron did jump for a chance to be on the local ESPN station, then I think he’s making a very smart long-term move. If you’re the best FSU-based radio guy there is, it only makes sense for you to go to a station where you can maximize your listenership. And for all of the hosts that nobody likes on 97.9, I know the station owner over there and he’s REAL good people. There’s no doubt in my mind that if JC did decide to jump, the owner would do all he could to help him find a temporary job so he could (ahem) MAINTAIN until the deal could get done on the back end.

Long-term, ESPN’s going to eat 1270’s lunch. No big revelation, just the way it is: Cut an FM station’s average listenership by 80% and you have the average listenership for a comparable AM station. And the money stream for AM is even worse-most local AM stations were either barely breaking even or losing money before the recession. Now, even that money has virtually dried up. The only way to escape that and HAVE a long-term future is to go where you will be heard, and that means FM.

Don't see a path for Jeff to continue to produce a mostly exclusive FSU show.

Moving across town to the local ESPN affiliate won’t expose Jeff to a significantly larger local Tallahassee audience.

If ESPN does bring him on for National Syndication, he would have to drop all FSU homerism and be fairly team-neutral. For a regionally syndicated show, he would probably have to relocate to a major MSA where he would be expected to serve the fans of the local area’s professional and collegiate sports market.

Most major Florida MSA’s will allow some FSU talk but he would have to share showtime with the other collegiate programs in his locale—-giving preference to the Bulls in Tampa, Knights in Orlando and Canes in South Florida and close to equal time to the dreaded Gators wherever he goes in Florida..

Of the major Florida MSA’s, a Jacksonville show may allow him more freedom to cover a somewhat higher percentage of FSU sports as Jacksonville doesn’t have a major college football program and is the closest major market to Tallahassee. Unfortunately, that other school down the road is only about half the distance to Jacksonville and its fans will whine for equal coverage.

But one thing is for sure, the Jeff Cameron Show we have grown to love over its many years and which has become a fabric of our lives is history. We can now mourn our loss together.

Someone get this memo to Dan Sileo, stat

“Most major Florida MSA’s will allow some FSU talk but he would have to share showtime with the other collegiate programs in his locale—-giving preference to the Bulls in Tampa, Knights in Orlando and Canes in South Florida and close to equal time to the dreaded Gators wherever he goes in Florida.”

At least during football season, I’d swear I was living in Coral Gables. And in the offseason, it’s a stream of old-Miami-teammate-call-ins-for-no-discernible-reason.

No matter where he is, Jeff could talk about whatever he wanted, as long as he entertained as well.

by ACCMarcus on Jan 25, 2012 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree with your analysis of the local market. He certainly WOULD have a larger listener base if he was on FM, even in Tallahassee

AM is the BFE of radio. NO ONE listens to AM exclusively anymore, and over 80% of people with a radio set will NEVER turn to any AM station ever, for any reason. Going to FM radio, even in the same market, will expose you to over 5x the audience instantly. It’s almost a prerequisite to having a career in radio nowadays.

If I know the owner of 97.9, he’d love to have a guy like Jeff. He had the best local sports show in the region and a Rolodex full of names in FSU’s athletic department. It’d be a no-brainer hire if JC wanted to stay in town. If he had a 6-month non-compete at 1270, then the time when you’ll know if he’s gone to 97.9 will be late July.

If he doesn’t, you’re right that his FSU-exclusive schtick will not work anywhere else. However, His approach to FSU mirrors that of many other local sports show hosts, and is readily adaptable to other markets. He will do well for himself after he gets his feet wet, no matter where he lands.

I’ll try to keep tabs on where he pops up next.

AM talk radio still does very well

there are 2 reasons to listen to AM – political talk and sports talk. everyone looking for either knows to check AM, so it isnt like they are hidden and unknown

Yes, but it's still nowhere near the listenership of FM

That both Sports Talk and Political Talk have done well and made money on AM stations is a reflection of the strength of those formats, not of any inherent appeal for AM.

I was a talk show producer on AM radio for 6 years, so I know how well AM talk radio does and doesn’t do. Even with all of that, when you put comparable talk programming on FM, it blows the AM stations out of the water.

Let me give you a case in point:
Rush Limbaugh is on 100.7 in Tallahassee right now. Way back years ago when I was first starting out, I was at a small AM talk station in Tallahassee when they carried Rush. He pulled about 2% of listners in the ratings in his time slot at the time.
Things happened, we lost the lease on our tower and the studio, the station went under, and in the meantime Clear Channel’s parent company bought the syndication network that distributes Rush and gave all of their own stations first shot at him. Our agreement lapsed, and CC’s local management picked him up and put him on 1270. Now 1270 is a much stronger signal than my old station was, yet after his ratings stabilized, he pulled a little better, but he was still hovering around 2%-the ratings stayed the same no matter where he was on AM.
Flash forward 4 or 5 years, CC flips 100.7 away from hip-hop and over to News-Talk just before a ratings period, with Rush as the centerpiece. First ratings periods after a flip that drastic are usually awful, so you usually give things about a year to really ramp up and find your audience. As of that first ratings period on FM, Rush’s ratings had tripled instantly. By the second ratings period, it was up over 4x the listenership and has stayed there since.

Same show, same time, comparable station range, 4 times the listenership. That’s the power of FM.
I don’t know if it will work that well for JC, but a nice tidy ratings bump is the usual outcome. When incoming students arrive in town and cruise the FM dial to pick the stations they like, they’re going to find JC now. They never would have before.

I retract and apologize. No intention to slander anyone's name unnecessarily.

The guy I knew was on-air, at 1270 and/or its parent company at about the same time JC started there AND had the same first name. In radio, that’s about as close as it usually gets.

Actually very glad and relieved to hear they are not the same person.

Spot on, Bud!

Jeff is way too talented for a market this size. Whether his leaving is self motivated, or the decision of Clear Channel executives, Jeff is on the way to much bigger things. And, oh BTW, as you’re on your way to those bigger and better things, no pants, my friend!

I am utterly shocked

I had no idea this was in the works and was blindsided by the news this afternoon. The fact that I was an out of town listener says it all. Not only was his show entertaining in itself but when I listened it always reminded me of the great times I had in Tallahassee. Therefore it was bigger than a show for me in that regard. Good luck and thanks for the good times.

From the horse's mouth...

After being badgered constantly on their facebook page, 1270 the team had this to say:

To clear the air as best we can – Jeff Cameron resigned his position at 1270 The Team on Tuesday. He was not fired, forced out, or asked to leave by the parent company. It was as much a shock to us here at 1270 as it is to you all. We do wish the best for him and his family down the road. Thank you all for listening.

Sounds from that, like Jeff indeed had something to fall back on, a bigger offer somewhere
