ESPN 97.9 the new home for Jeff Cameron
@Corey_Clark: Just got word Jeff Cameron will be back on the air in Tallahassee on Aug. 1. When he starts new job at 97.9 ESPN Radio.
It would have been inappropriate to release the news with Ron Vitrano still on the air. 97.9 appears to have made a major, major commitment here.
This is great news for all Noles fans. Glad to see he came out on top. Advantage: Capitalism.

Oh Snap!
Yeah that Ron Vitrano show was a disaster. Huge upgrade for Jeff too getting into the ESPN network could prove fruitful for national prospects as well.

Corey's Article

consultant? what in the world does that mean?

Radio and TV “personalities” typically have non-compete clauses written into their contracts. This keeps them from flipping between stations in the same market.
On a side, this is a first-time post from a long-time lurker. Glad to be part of the conversation!

Welcome and we hope you start posting more.
>------::----::------->Spearing 'em and Scalping 'em like it's 1999
I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.
If you have an employment contract there is typically a non-compete clause in it.
They’re commonplace these days for broadcast industry talent positions. I think it’s a little ridiculous given the low pay that is often associated with those jobs, but there seems to be no shortage of personnel seeking jobs in the industry. (I have no idea what JC makes. Probably much less than what he’s worth though.)
its about IP
there is only one Jeff Cameron, and his personality and talent is not something they want competing against them. not related to pay.
"I guess they have a reputation of being more of a tricky team and not being tough. You hit ‘em in the mouth, and they don’t like it. Other teams that have beat them just hit them in the mouth, so that’s what we started out with.’’ - Nick Moody
My post is poorly written.
I mixed the subjects of intellectual property (IP) and compensation. My point is that requiring a non-compete clause is a concession made by an employee. In my opinion, the broadcasting industry at this level, typically does not provide sufficient compensation to warrant such a concession from the employee. However, the industry enjoys an ample labor supply. That enables employers to demand concessions from employees in excess of the level of compensation they are providing.

Right to work has more to do with unions
If you sign a ‘non-compete’, they can hold you to it.

FL is, but it can also be less hassle to just let it expire.
It can take less time for your non-compete to simply expire than to go to court and fight it, especially if the company decides to not let you go easy. Courts are slow and the business has the edge in that fight.
Besides, the way 97.9 has worked it out with JC, he’s still getting paid in the meantime. And don’t think he’s not taking the time to go out and sell his show to advertisers and lining them up for his launch, either. Most standard show-host salary agreements include a percentage of the money for any advertising he sells for the station, too.

Kinda funny reading this after a lot of you were telling us that Tally was to small and poor to keep him around.

Lucky for us, ESPN has enough money to keep him here

I would think Jeff would have lobbied heavily for Matt Millar.
But who knows, ESPN may want to change the show’s format by having a stronger personality in the studio with Jeff.
there goes all the great drug info! lol...

MM is the Station Manager of 1270, so I doubt he'd move.
He’s already got a decent job there, is making decent money, and also has a non-compete.
If he was going to jump, I think he would have already.

97.9
I hope they have more power, I would drive through tally and not even be able to pick up any sports worth listening
Also, if you have an iPhone you can listen to ESPN radio, 97.9 from anywhere in the US.
I listen sometimes up here in Louisville.
Well, you could do that before with iHeart and 1270.
Only way I was able to listen to him here in Birmingham.
1270
This is a nightmare for Clear Channel, they lose their top talent to their chief in-town rival. Immediately pushing him out of the building and stripping him off the website does not sit well with me.
by Fighting Conch on Jan 26, 2012 5:00 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
probably part of the contract as well
if he is still on their site, they are making money with advertisements from people visiting. that means they would be making money from his intellectual property and not paying him for it. it sucks for us, but its good for him that his stuff is no longer up.

Not a nightmare, just business.
This is standard operating procedure and common sense for all radio stations everywhere.
There’s no sense in telling people what you used to do-a ship doesn’t sail on yesterday’s wind. All broadcasting stations are all about what they are offering to you NOW, not what they used to carry before.
Friendly departure, unfriendly departure, abducted by aliens-it doesn’t matter. When a guy leaves, you pull his stuff off of your website instantly.
And with JC going cross-town, it’s even more imperative for them to scrub the website clean. Advertising for your competition is stupid.

The ESPN Radio app has been a turd for about a month now. A buddy of mine suggested TuneIn Radio Pro. Just set it up and it gets 97.9 clear as a bell. Now to wade thru six months of hell at work.

Here is the official statement from 97.9 ESPN Radio parent company Horizon Broadcasting
Horizon Broadcasting is excited to announce the addition of Jeff Cameron to their radio family. Effective February 1, 2012, Cameron will assume the role of Consultant for WBYW 104.3 "The Bay" in Panama City, FL.
In his new role, Cameron will serve as a Consultant working alongside Horizon’s VP of Operations, Mark Thompson. On August 1st, 2012, Cameron will re-assume his long-held spot as Afternoon Drive Host in Tallahassee on WBYW’s sister station, WTSM-FM 97.9 ESPN Radio.
"We’re very excited about Jeff coming aboard," said Horizon’s North Florida Regional Manager Barry Kaye. "For over thirteen years, Jeff has been a radio icon in Tallahassee. Even beyond that, Jeff Cameron represents the voice of Seminole fans from coast to coast. We look forward to welcoming Jeff’s large fan base to our operation."
Cameron comes to Horizon Broadcasting after spending over a decade as an on-air talent on WNLS-AM, becoming a staple for the Tallahassee sports fan’s afternoon drive home.
WTSM Operations Manager Mike Fahmie added "There is no doubt the Jeff Cameron Show has established itself as a part of Seminole fans’ year-round daily routine. I have the utmost respect for what Jeff has accomplished and look forward to working with him beginning in August."
"I’m thrilled to join the Horizon Broadcasting team. This is an excellent opportunity for my family and my career, and Horizon is an outstanding organization," said Cameron. "They have a lot of experienced people I can learn from. This is a great chance for me to advance my broadcasting career while remaining in Florida’s Panhandle where I owe so much to my loyal listeners. (President) Chris Smith and his family run a wonderful operation, one that I’m proud to be a part of now. Jay Meyers, Mark Thompson, and Barry Kaye are all radio veterans with national experience, and Mike Fahmie has done an excellent job with their ESPN Tallahassee affiliate."
"Although Ron Vitrano has left WTSM 97.9 ESPN Radio in Tallahassee, he will continue working with ESPN-TV and other television networks, and we wish Ron nothing but the best," said Kaye.
Fans of Jeff Cameron can keep up with his endeavors by following him on twitter at @JCameronShow. They can follow WTSM on twitter at @979espnradio, at Facebook.com/979espnradio, or online at www.ESPNTallahassee.com.

Is he gonna continue the 3-6
or is he gonna be 4-7? Would they cut SVP early? Awesome news for Cameron, Tallahassee, the Noles, and Me.
I really enjoy SVP
cause like Cameron he puts it out there…and doesnt shy away from things. Doesn’t have to scream to feel important. Takes a stand… and well his content is really freaking good.

how about that embarrassing voicemail incident?
sounded like a nice guy to me, and that girl screwed him over. i hope they dont cut off his last hour to start the JCS.

If I was the PD of 97.9 (and I'm not, but I like the guy-more good people), I'd put him at 4-7
I’d slide him right into Vitrano’s old time slot. My reasoning:
A) You’ll get more time after 5PM for people to call in, so discussion will automatically be livelier than a show scheduled from 3-6. More discussion=less hours spent just filling time until the phone rings, and it’s better for the host’s morale.
2) You don’t have to cut into an established and popular show like SVP, so you’re not sabotaging your format and punishing your listeners for liking your shows the way they are.
D) You’re not changing ESPN around too much, so your ESPN clearance declarations on the back end (which are a NIGHTMARE-I’ve done them) don’t change too drastically either, so it’s less hassle for the PD, and
Choo Choo) You’ve already got a listener expectation for local content in the 4-7 time frame. That you’re not changing their lives around, just giving them better stuff to listen to, is always appreciated.

so many people to thank. It is impossible to do so in this limited format. I again want to say THANK YOU so much for your support.
You will hear from me again soon when I am better able to explain the my situation. I have nothing but gratitude towards Clear Channel and
