Noles Basketball: Who Should We Be Rooting For?
After watching the Duke-Maryland game last night, and the North Carolina-NC State game while writing this, I was wondering which teams FSU fans should be rooting for in various games throughout the season. As a casual college hoops fan, I’m relatively naïve about the seeding process for the tournament, which I assume we will make (barring a meltdown – which also would not surprise me). Essentially, I’m hoping to spark a discussion similar to what you see during football season, where we know FSU would have benefited by Clemson or Wake Forest losses.
If I’m not mistaken, FSU’s rpi, standing in the regular ACC season, and finish in the ACC championship affect the seeding process for the tournament (please correct me if this is wrong). So, should we be rooting for teams like Duke and UNC to dominate the rest of the ACC to make our wins look even more impressive, or should we be rooting against them so they do not challenge us in the regular ACC season standings, thus giving them poorer seeding in the ACC tournament?
Lastly, what teams (more than others) in the top-25 should we hope drop some games? What general scenarios will allow FSU to drop a few games here and there, but still provide for favorable seeding in the NCAA tournament? Although it is a long way off, if TN can share some information on this process, it will give some more context to these other games.
OT: Although I’ve read TN for a long time, I just created an account so that I can join in this community’s great discussions. As a recent FSU alum, I greatly appreciate the incredible insight this community provides to all things Seminoles. Thanks TN for giving me something to read during class; otherwise, I would never survive law school.

I am not a Bball genius.
But I think we should root for more losses of UNC/Duke. While it may hurt our wins against them, I am more concerned about our standings within the ACC than our initial seed in the NCAA Tourney. I think our main goal shoud be to win the regular season ACC. That seems to be what would help the most for recruiting and future success.
regular ACC title
doesn’t mean anything, if I’m not mistaken. FSU starts winning the ACC tournament and it will boost recruiting.

Why do you disagree?
I certainly agree with the second part of the statement. And the tourney being in Atlanta this year would be the perfect year for FSU to get some attention!
Because winning the ACC regular season will boost recruiting as well and don’t agree with “doesn’t mean anything.”
Oh, I got ya. Winning the regular season would be HUGE!!
I can’t wait for next week to get here.
Either finishing 1st in the regular season, or winning the tourney would be awesome.
Doing both in the ACC would blow my mind.
My thoughts are root for UNC and Duke to maintain top 5-10 rankings
Quality wins play a huge part in the seeding process. Personally I’m hoping more for a favorable bracket than a favorable seed (though both would obviously be ideal).
pairings
the ncaa tourney is all about pairings and how well one team can exploit its advantages over the team it is facing that particular day
saw one once…tried to throw a spiral and couldnt…..that was all I needed to know.

but seriously stoked about how our guys have come around offensively as of late….defense rarely was cause for concern.

It's a delicate balance
We want UNC and Duke to keep winning so that we can keep them as quality wins on our resume. However, we also want to win the ACC regular season, so we can get the #1 seed in the ACCT and avoid facing both UNC and Duke. Barring a meltdown in other games, if we beat Duke at home we should be able to accomplish this. That would give us the tie breaker against both teams and would be the ideal situation. More realistically, I think we should hope for UNC and Duke to split and each drop one other game. That would allow us to drop 2 more games and still be tied with both of them and we would win the tiebreaker. We would be 2-1 against both of them (assuming a loss to Duke), UNC would be 1-2, and Duke would be 2-2. This means the upcoming home game against UVA is really important. We need to win that so we don’t have to worry about getting a win against them on the road.
If three or more teams are tied in the standings, the following procedures will be used:
a. The combined record of conference games between the tied teams involved will be compiled. Ties will be broken, and seedings assigned, based on the winning percentage of the combined conference records. The higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group is unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1; 1-0 is the same as 2-0; 2-0 is the same as 4-0; 2-1 is the same as 4-2; 1-0 is better than 1-1; 0-1 is the same as 0-2; 0-2 is the same as 0-4).
b. If procedure (a) fails to break the tie, then each tied team’s record shall be compared to the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage by a higher winning percentage.
c. If the tie is broken by (a) or (b) regarding one of more teams, but three or more teams remain tied, then procedures (a) and (b) will be reapplied among those tied teams only.
d. If two teams remain tied, procedures (1) and (2) will be followed.

This seems easiest
This seems easiest/best route. Definitely want the one seed, but I don’t want those “quality” wins eliminated.
FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!
yep, and Duke and UNC are like Alabama and LSU
In that a loss to each other doesn’t diminish the loser much. Probably best if they each take one loss to the other.

This seems like the best possibility to me.

Screw UNC and Duke (to a point).
The ideal situation is for Noles to finish as the 1-seed for the ACC Tournament and Duke/UNC to finish as the 2/3. That way we could only face them in the Finals, and would only face one of them. They’re both going to finish in the RPI top-25 regardless. As pointed out above, there is no such thing as a regular season champion in hoops. We could hang a banner (and probably would) but it’s not recognized by the ACC. To the winner of the ACC Tourney go the spoils.
“to a point” being not enough to drop to a four seed, right? Otherwise, we’re still left with the possibility of playing them.

UNC and Duke are gonna get their wins
so I wouldn’t worry about the ACC too much. Pull for Duke to beat UNC simply because we play them 2×. Likewise, root for the other ACC teams we play 2×. Pull for the teams we played OOC. Yes, this means pull for the Gatahs up until the first game of the NCAA tourney, at which point you wish for them to be embarrassed.
That's absolutely true factually
But in reality winning the regular season is the more important feat for the program.

I think we need to take care of business
and root for UNC and Duke in their games. We have Duke in less than a month in Tally.
