Pre-Snap Read's Year in Review for Florida St.
Florida State’s where it is today, knocking on the door of a title run, for one reason: because the Alabama board of trustees vetoed Fisher move to Birmingham.

coach-in-waiting
i’ve heard many times on tv and radio that the ‘coach-in-waiting’ idea doesn’t work. yes, it makes it a bit bumpier and uncomfortable until the power is transferred, but for overall stability of a program, i think it worked out well for florida state. fisher was able to come in, diagnose the problems, concentrate on areas of instability (that he wouldn’t have time for as a HC) and lay the groundwork for change so he could hit the ground running from day 1.
I think it can only work in very specific situations (ours being one)
Most head coaches are probably not going to be very cooperative in training their replacement.

Imagine how much further along FSU would be if Bowden & Co. weren't working against Jimbo.
Or at least stunting his efforts to succeed.

Interesting read.
Didn’t know about the UAB history with Fisher. I can’t wait to see our D-line over the next two seasons or so!
We all owe the Alabama trustees a big thanks
That’s two massive favors they’ve done for FSU, after they ticked off Bowden by insisting he interview for the Alabama job years ago and ensured he stuck around in Tallahassee.
interesting comment
FSU will have national championship type of talent, but they have to learn how to win the close games. In 2010, their 10-4 record becomes 12-2 if not for an inexplicable fumble inside the NC State 5 on the last play of the game (with a WR WIDE open in the endzone) and two missed DHop FGs in the final 4 minutes against UNC. In 2011, potential game winning drives were stopped by mediocre defenses in Clemson and Wake, and again Hopkins missed a FG that turns the UVA game. Poor execution in crunch time is the difference between their actual 19-8 record and a 24-3 one.
I saw that comment
While there is a negative side to see in what the poster said, we could also take heart in the fact that we are becoming a team that does not get solidly beat. We’re in every game, despite injuries, bad calls, weather, down games, trap games, etc.
As the roster gets more and more talented and deeper, and the players have more time to pick up the system… we should win more of those close games. And have fewer close games.
Of our 8 losses in the last two years, 5 have been by less than a TD. We are getting very, very close to perfection. (And 2 more losses were by 10, 11 points; two possession games.)
Eh, I'm not sure I buy that
In 2010, we could have veeeery easily have lost to BC and Clemson
This year, same thing with Miami and Notre Dame
For us 24-3 is about as likely as 15-12
But having said that, there have certainly been some issues with in-game management, and despite what the author (who I do respect) says, Fisher has clearly been learning as a HC.
to say we could have "easily" lost to UM
is an insult to the entire hard working ACC officiating community.
Dogs bark in the night but the caravan moves on.
24-3 is definitely a stretch
but I agree with the general idea. We appeared to turn it around in the Notre Dame game, but the Irish were atrocious in the 4th quarter all year so I’m not really sure how much stock to put into that one. In our defense, many of our best players weren’t available in crunch time against OU, Clemson, and Wake.

One interesting point I’m surprised wasn’t made, along with how the Alabama Board of Trustees basically did this to ensure that Bama wasn’t threatened by UAB; was by FSU getting Fisher when we did, not only did he get to hit the ground running; he was also put in a better position to put together an awesome staff (ie. Dameyune Craig.)
In retrospect it would have been better for the Board of Trustees to let Fisher go to UAB so Bama would have been able to keep at least a few of the recruits we were able to steal from their backyard (Casher, Shanks, Winston, Coker last year, etc.) They’re just lucky they were able to hold onto Trent Richardson and Julio Jones, or they’d really be reeling in Tuscaloosa !
Thanks Bama! Roll Tribe!
Good question
but it makes sense that hew would seriously consider it. How many FSU type opportunities open up for an aspiring head coach? Look at Oscar Myer’s route to fame.

There’s senior leadership at quarterback.
Except he doesn’t make decisions and play like a senior. Yet.
No, but at least his poor decision making just leads to short drives. He's not going to be tossing out any Jacory Harris arm punts.
Don’t forget, he finished the year with a 65% completion rate, >2 to 1 TD-INT ratio, and finished in the top 25 in most passing categories.
If we have to live with a quarterback whose poor decisions, when hurt and playing behind a sieve of an OL, amount to a 2:1 TD-INT ratio, I think I’ll live.
He had a horrible year, and regressed down the stretch, but it could have been MUCH worse.
