Colin Blake Recruiting Update
One of the more interesting recruits in the 2012 class is cornerback Colin Blake of San Antonio Brandeis High School, who is originally from England. Brandeis High School plays against some of the top competition in Texas at the 5A level. Standing at 6'3, 185lbs with the hips and speed to stay at CB in a zone-based system, Blake is one of the hottest names on the recruiting trail. What's more impressive for a prospect that has over 15 BCS offers is that he has only been playing the cornerback position since his junior year.
To the surprise of many, FSU has been recruiting Blake since his Junior year. Blake, who recently de-committed from Texas A&M, recently announced his top three schools as Florida State, TCU, and Oklahoma. Credit the hard work of Florida State defensive end coach D.J. Eliot, who recruits the San Antonio area as well as anybody(Last year 5 star San Antonio RB Aaron Green had FSU as a finalist).
I recently caught up with Colin to ask him about his recruitment and his top schools.
MM: How did your recent Official Visit(1/13/2012) to Florida State go?
CB: It went great and I Ioved the campus. I really got along with (Ronald)Darby and Mario Edwards during the visit.
MM: Who is your main recruiter FSU and how is your relationship with him?
CB: Coach (D.J.) Eliot is my recruiter. He is real cool dude, who you can tell is sincere in what he tells you. He has been recruiting me since my Junior year.
MM: Is FSU recruiting you at Safety or Cornerback?
CB: They are recruiting me as a corner.
MM: How does OU losing Willie Martinez, your primary recruiter for OU at the guy who would have been your position coach affect the Sooners' chances?
CB: It hurts because he was the person I talked to most, but Coach (Mike)Stoops has done a good job since then.
MM: What do you like about your other finalist TCU?
CB: I like that they hired back Coach (Chad) Glasglow. He was the first coach to offer me and he is a great defensive back coach.
MM: How has your rehab been going and what was the injury?
CB: It's been going good, I'm ahead of schedule and feel I'm around 70 percent since the shoulder surgery.
MM: Will distance play a factor in the school you choose?
CB: It was at first, but after traveling to the different schools it's not as big of factor.
MM: Who do you compare your game after at the college or pro level?
CB: I would say Patrick Peterson and Nnamdi Asomugha at the pro level. At the college level Tryann Mathieu's style of play.
MM: What are you main factors in choosing a school?
CB: Education first and foremost is really big for me. I will also factor in how I fit in at the school even if I'm not playing football. Another thing is what school will help me most to be able to get into the league.
MM: When are your plans to announce?
CB: I plan to announce on National Signing Day at 9 AM

Blake’s comparisons are unrealistic, IMO. But since we’re talking NFL guys, he reminds me of a skinny Chris McAllister.
But Bud, you want him as a Nole....and to be a guy down the line that other young kids compare themselves to....right? Seems like you want him here.
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Galatians 2:20
I do mean he comes here, tears it up, and leaves an All-American to be compared too.. :D

FWIW Rivals compare him to Asomugha(sp?)
Not sure who I would compare him to. Hard to find 6’3 guys with hips to stay at CB

McAllister in his prime was a beast
So that’s not a bad comparison either
I would take a prime McAllister over Asomugha,
He put together a string of season in his prime that could easily rival Asomugha best years to date.
Patrick Peterson, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Tryann Mathieu's
these 3 are all very different players IMO. I agree with Bud, he isn’t really like any of these guys. I do feel Blake has the tools to be very very successful like the 3 gentlemen mentioned. I really hope Blake commits to FSU.

That's the first thing I thought.
Let’s just pick the corners who get the most media coverage.
I am not a fan of the comparison question....
They are always going to compare themselves to the best, they are not going to say “I play like Ray Ray Armstrong.”

He's got Cromartie's size, but what about his speed?
Rivals has him posted at a 4.5 40, doesn’t seem like great CB speed.. I’m sure that’s something that can be developed though.
If life gives you lemons, go ahead and punch a Gator fan.
I think thats fine for a zone based scheme.

And he's 6'3", 185...which means he would probably play at 6'3", 200+ in 2 years, with that same speed. Which means he's going to be physical and play the ball higher than most.
This should not be a concern at all.
yeah I could imagine a Chris Cook or Jimmy Smith type of build on him
Also going back a few years, Mike Rumph was a bigger corner without elite speed who used his size very effectively at the college level. He also happened to be coached by Mark Stoops.
This 49er fan had hoped never to hear the words "Mike Rumph" again
but he was a baller at the U.
As a niners fan myself it hurt to even type that name, lol
and even though i was vehemently opposed to the pick when we selected him out of UM he was very effective in college.
FWIW, 247 has Pender listed as a 4.5 40.

I hope he meant he’s a good kick returner, because Patrick Peterson sucked ass as corner this year.
If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

Most people can't watch football every weekend.
He might just remember how highly Peterson was drafted, how sick of a returner he was this year, and figured that was a good answer.

If he and Darby picked FSU, I think they’re the next most likely players (after G5 and XR leave) to start with Waisome in the slot.

Is the acc a better place than the big 12 to showcase your talent to the NFL? It seems like they’d rather see how you match up against pro style offenses than the heavily run spread types in the big 12. Not to mention the experience gained going up against our receivers in practice every day.
by nole country for old men on Jan 28, 2012 4:59 PM EST via mobile reply actions
A great point
Any idea what level of thought the elite (NFL hopeful) recruit puts into their choices?
"He who hesitates, meditates in the horizontal position" Edmund Kealoha "Ed" Parker
Personally
Which would you rather showcase your talents against? The harder to defend spread you all the way across the field offenses of the Big 12 where you’re more likely to be able to showcase your "island’ or more pro style offenses that while you can translate them to the NFL, aren’t quite as taxing to defend?
I’d still prefer he went to FSU rather than the sooners or TCU, but he’d better be able to showcase his ability to shut people down in the Big 12.
TEXAS FIGHT
Also, if you're looking at which school the recievers would
be the biggest workout to go against in practice, then the choice would be an obvious Oklahoma.
TEXAS FIGHT
Disagree. This year w/Stills and broyles, sure. But I’ll take our receiver corps over theirs for the 3-4 years that Blake would be here. And I also disagree w/the take that the NFL would rather see defensive players play against the spread than pro style offenses. Every year around the draft pro personnel guys express concerns over the ability of players to transition from the spread to pro style (I imagine there would be some concern over defending the spread vs pro style). What isn’t debatable is that the acc has more defenders drafted into the NFL than the big 12.
by nole country for old men on Jan 28, 2012 7:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions 3 recs
See Texas
There aren’t many concerns about any of the DB’s coming out of Texas. That’s one reason why a nickname for Texas is DBU, though I know you’ll probably want to change the meaning of it.
TEXAS FIGHT
Also, you see the questions more on the offensive side of the ball
Especially with QB’s. I rarely if ever even hear a slight hint of doubt about a defensive player being able to defend because they faced spread offenses.
The overall talent on offense is unquestionably better in the Big 12 and the teams as a whole are better there than the ACC. This is easily demonstrated by bowl performances and non-conference records of the last years. By that line of thought, wouldn’t a player prefer to play in the better conference?
Oh and once again, I want him to end up at FSU because although I bleed burnt orange and love the Horns, I also love me some Noles and will root for them in any game other than ones directly playing Texas. Plus then he’s not going to the competition.
TEXAS FIGHT
just want to make this clear. you think that that colin blake has a better shot of being drafted if he plays against spread teams than pro style offenses?
by nole country for old men on Jan 28, 2012 8:06 PM EST up reply actions
i’ll just give you some numbers. 2011 nfl draft: acc w/34 players drafted, big 12 w/22. 2010 nfl draft: acc 31, big 12 30. 2009 draft: acc 33, big 12 28. 2008: acc 33, big 12 29.

There's even more contrast if you compare first round picks
We have quite a bit of talent in the ACC. It just doesn’t translate to success very often
by BobLoblaw113 on Jan 28, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions
haha pretty much.
but there’s some truth to it. we’re pretty good at putting DB’s in the league.
i don’t really know our story w/ not going after blake harder, btw. i think he’s an excellent prospect. we’re (akina) is not very adept at teaching zone coverage and i think that really hamstrung us w/ him. i think he would’ve been a safety in our system although we’ve got some new wrinkles that would have made him a viable slot cover guy for us, i think.
i hope you guys get him so we won’t have to consistently face him.
Yep. FSU is historically considered DB U. We have a lil bit of pride about it.
I actually think once Mack get the QB situation figured out Texas will be back
Lack of knowledge about college football before the last 5 years leads people to make outrageous claims.
FSU IS DB U.
Next they’ll claim they are LB U, too.

IMO yes
Chad Glasglow who was just hired back by TCau was the first person to offer Blake. I believe this was before Blake even played one down of football his junior season. Glasglow is known as one of the best DB coach/evaluators in the business. I put a lot of stock into school/college coach/recruiter is after a prospect over some recruiting service who might have seen a prospect play only one game. Basically College Coaches Evaluations>>>Recruiting service evaluations.

Whoever rated him 3* needs to be slapped. In a zone scheme, he is DEFINITELY a 4*.......at least.
Size, physicality, athleticism, ability to quickly flips hips & quickly change direction while keeping his weight centered, and is a HAMMER vs the run.
Not sure where the rumor that he plays “soft” come from…..that’s not true at all.
