2012 Basketball Discussion Thread
Welcome to the basketball discussion thread. Feel free to discuss any and all things related to Seminole basketball. Please refrain from other topics, as there are plenty of threads for those.
If this thread fills up, we will start a new one.
If you post information from another site, please indicate and link to from where you read it.
We've received several requests from community members who would like to increase their X's and O's knowledge of basketball. Bud and the football team do great work in this regard, and now I'd like to translate that to basketball. I will keep a running list of video breakdowns for those interested.
- Michael Snaer emerges as a leader
- How FSU's defensive versatility stopped Travis McKie
- The importance of offensive spacing

Who to hate for Saturday nights games?
St Marys at BYU – a tricky one, because we’re probably a bit behind St Marys and a bit ahead of BYU. If you’re confident we’ll finish strong, pull for BYU. If you think we’ll slip, pull for St Marys.
Virginia at NC State – we’re competing with the Hoos for seeding, and probably for ACC standings. Go pack.
Cincinnati at Rutgers – Cincy is probably right behind us on the s-curve. Scarlet Knights!

Tyler Lewis to NC State should be red in the summary above.
And the folks in NC are excited about Purvis.
Love what you're doing here, Michael.
Maybe it’s just me, but feels like BBall interest is really picking up. Keep it going!

Great work and addition to TN

Ok thought about doing a fanpost awhile ago but this works...
I’ve followed Noles basketball pretty closely since 2006. On the whole, our program has shown significant progress since then. We can play with anyone in the country form January to March. It’s the October to December parts that bothers me and most fans. Every season we come in beat up the lesser teams and just get hammered by which ever B1G team we play (and usually UF). What does HAM do from May to September to have his teams so unprepared? I really thought this was the season we could put in a decent shift from October to March. Instead of being a top 15 team generating buzz we’re cruising through the ACC sked till the big tourney. (I never had a doubt this season we weren’t gonna make the tourney) ((we can still make top 15 but still))
Seriously Turtle, Smoke More Weed
I honestly think it takes that long for the team to learn the Defensive side of the ball
Before they start to focus on the Offensive side.
Coach Ham stresses defense b/c that’t the last thing he wants to break down.
by CelticPride on Jan 28, 2012 11:51 PM EST up reply actions
look at the returning minutes
After 2006 and 2008 you lost your one-man-show in Thorton and Douglas.
You lost 30% of the minutes coming into this season and most would consider this team one of the more veteran squads CHam has started with.. Other years you are looking at 40%, 50%, or more. You have to expect some attrition but because FSU was not able to bring in elite level talent, you rarely had guys who could contribute from day one. Snaer and Singleton were exceptions to the rule. Having to rely on talent development hurts continuity. Seemingly every year guys are learning new roles. Compare that to the elite teams that simply replace losses with a new face filling a similar role.
That said, this year and this team, were on the disappointing side. And I had doubts.
We're not the only ones. Good article here about our chances at an ACC title.
And some good background info about how other teams started poorly, but ended up winning the regular season.
X Gibson
Every time some1 talked about him as a freshman they raved about his potential. Since HAM made Thorton into an NBA player I figured he could do the same for X. Well X never made any sort of leap and just had his best game v Dook when James was feeding him dunks. Since X is from Bama I think if he would been option 1, 2 from day 1 (for UA or AU) he coulda lived up to his potential. I shake my head everytime I watch him play. HAM just couldn’t get it out of him. He still sucks at rebounding and dribbling, basic stuff.
Seriously Turtle, Smoke More Weed
I don’t think he has the inner drive or attitude to consistently play hard and do the little things to get better. Doubt any coach would be able to get that out of him.
My photo appeared in the Nightlife photo collage of the FSView for six weeks in-a-row. That’s who I am.
Thats an easy answer (and probably right). But I’ve always felt it was confidence. Hes never even been option 4 on this team.. Im hoping we still have yet to see the best from X.

elite offensive rebounder, solid defensive rebounder
by Michael Rogner on Jan 29, 2012 12:01 AM EST up reply actions
do you have stats to back this up? I’d love to know how many offensive rebounds he has and how many he gives up. From what I’ve seen, he has to play to with James. He can not get boards on his own.
Seriously Turtle, Smoke More Weed
by Mannieblunts on Jan 29, 2012 10:31 AM EST up reply actions
He gets 12.2% of the offensive boards when he's on the floor (6th in ACC)
and 17.1% of the defensive boards (21st in ACC)
by Michael Rogner on Jan 29, 2012 10:59 AM EST up reply actions
probably a perception issue here...
Gibson uses his height and vertical to get boards, very good at slashing. He is almost like a guard (with absurd height) rebounding wise. You occasionally see him “look lost”, not block out, get beat physically, etc., which can be frustrating… but on the whole the results are there.
He seems like a Very laid back young man.
Not necessarily a character flaw, but doesn’t translate that well to the court.
Absolutely
The type A personality (aggressive) is definitely a trait for success in not only sports, but many careers.
He's shown some emotion the last few games
and, surprise, his production has increased. It was gratifying to see him work the Wake player inside in the 2nd half the other night. Granted, it was a 6’7" white guy who shoulda been playing small forward, but maybe it was a light bulb moment for Gibson. “Hey, I’m a big man!”
Michael
How much I our recent success do you attribute to the reintroduction of Ian Miller? I feel like having another true scorer to help lighten the load on snare has really raised everyone’s confidence level an allowed them to play a bit more confidently. Thoughts?

It's not just Miller
The whole team is playing better. Miller is definitely a useful cog on the machine.
But Hamilton rolls ten on most every night.
Sort of a 40 minutes of hell philosophy.
I really think the Dulkys game immensely helped our team going forward – b/c other defenses can’t lay off him b/c he’s proven he’ll burn you.
by CelticPride on Jan 28, 2012 11:53 PM EST up reply actions
totally agree
it is not all about miller. I was trying to get a sense of how the rest of the team has benefitted from the confidence that comes with having a scoring threat like he is. Especially considering it seemed like we had long scoreless periods in the pre-miller games and I haven’t noticed those types of droughts since then.
by nolesdude on Jan 29, 2012 12:07 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions
TO’s were a huge problem. But we were also not making easy shots. The games in the Bahamas, we were missing so many baskets just 5 feet around the hoop. Once those started going in and Dulkys/Snaer make jump shots, scoring became easier.

Ham has recruited a number of combo guards - Miller, Bookert, Brandon,
so likely moving toward less of a true point. But for the NBA Ham will develop his skills as a PG, though he won’t be called upon to carry the load until he’s an upperclassmaan

by TheRenegade29 on Jan 29, 2012 3:07 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I would expect CHam to roll 3 guards, White/Space at the 4, Shannon at the 5 with some Turpin minutes. The bigger worry is really the following year, when you lose Shannon and Turpin.
As of today…
Snaer-Miller-Whisnant/Thomas. Mix in Brandon and maybe Bookert.
White/Space. Mix in Gilchrist.
Shannon/Turpin.
CHam tends to use a deep bench so expect 9/10 guys to see minutes consistently. Be a real different look next year.
Turpin has another year after this
He was a player that had 3 to play 2, so he redshirted this year to develop his body (because of his absurd/late growth spurt), at least in theory. So he will be a junior next season. But otherwise, your prognostication seems spot on. While it would make sense for Gilchrist to be a 4, I don’t see how he wouldn’t play the 5 too.
by zeitgeistnole on Jan 29, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions
so Miller will be the 1st option at PG next year?

RBC is very nice as well
Not the classic college venue but very very nice with all the luxury suites and ample parking etc. It can also get loud when NC State is playing well and when they pack it out…no pun intended.
I plan on going to the FSU/NC State game in February. Fortunately there are plenty of tickets as FSU doesn’t draw as many fans as say Duke, Wake or UNC.

I would take that and run with it as an FSU fan :)
Nothing’s money in the bank, but I’d like our chances to go sweet16ing at the dances…
In the business, this is what we call a "lock" for Tuesday night:
Clemson (+8) at UVa.
Come and see the violence inherent in the system!!!
Really?
You don’t think UVA’s going to win by more than 8?
I mean, don’t get me wrong, I want Clemson to win, but this is a road game…
I'm going counterintutive on this one. Clemson has been awful on the road, no
doubt. However, both these teams are at the low end of the conference in possessions/game, so we could have a low-scoring affair here. Additionally, Sene is still out for UVa, so maybe Booker has a good night for Clemson. Finally, toss in a little “look-ahead” action for UVa for their game in Tally, and I like the 8 points.
Still unsure on UNC (-16) at Wake. A lot of points, but I still might lean towards the Heels.
Come and see the violence inherent in the system!!!
I'm also gonna stick with the Tarheels (-16). I like the Tarheels scoring the last couple
games. Wake going the opposite way.
Come and see the violence inherent in the system!!!
yeah - the heels now look like we all thought they would -
that seems like a safe bet to me…
the way they dismantled a much better g tech team this weekend - they could beat wake by 40
and roy isnt one for letting off the gas too early…
UNC also had a tendency to play down a bit too
too many points for me to feel safe. but i agree on paper UNC should blow the doors off Wake.
youre looking brilliant at this pt
unc 1 – 13 in the 2nd half of a game that was likely over after 6 minutes..
just playing relaxed, no urgency @ this pt of an 8 pt game…
dammit, man! you jinxed me! ! I miss by one point and the last possession
WAS a missed shot by UNC. DAMMIT IT ALL TO HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who to hate: Tuesday
Michigan State at Ilinois: Battling Illinois for seeding. Can’t catch MSU. Sparty!
Seton Hall at Marquette: FSU is likely between these two. If you think FSU will finish with a bang, go Pirates. Otherwise Golden Eagles.
Clemson at Virginia: Any chance Clemson has of getting into the top 100 means they need some games like this. Plus, we’re battling UVA. Huge game, Go Tigers.
Vanderbilt at Arkanas: Vandy has a resume very similar to FSUs. Razorbacks it is.
K-State at Iowa State: K-State is struggling, and a loss here could put them significantly behind the Noles. Cyclones.
New Mexico at Air Force: New Mexico could catch FSU, but not if they drop games like this. Air Force.

Obviously only one game that truly matters, but still plenty of interesting matchups to be aware of.
Illinois State at Creighton: Creighton is ahead of us. Go Redbirds.
UConn at Georgetown: tough one here. Probably won’t catch GTown, and UConn is near us for seeding purposes. Likely best to root for Hoyas.
Indiana at Michigan. Indiana is fading. Winning at Michigan would keep them ahead of FSU. But Michigan is ahead of us as well. A loss at home would hurt. Who knows?
Xavier at George Washington: losing a game like this would put the dagger in Xavier. GW!
NC State at BC: need State to stay strong. Wolfpack.
St Bonaventure at St Louis: see Xavier at GW. Bonnies!
Maryland at Miami: F Miami.
Memphis at Southern Miss: USM has a better chance of catching FSU than Memphis. Their mascot is escaping me, but go whoever that is.
Wichita State at Missouri State: Wichita St can catch FSU, but not if they drop games like this. Go Bears.

I don’t have a feel for this game at all. UVA’s defense is very good. Our defense is very good. Scott for UVA is an incredible player. Can we limit him? I think this is going to be the Brandon James show, with James shutting down Scott and Dulkys, Snaer, Louks hitting threes. Is that all a dream?
MRogner,
What do you think of the announcement that the conference will include all 14 teams in the ACC Tournament? I was kind of hoping they would stick with 12, to at least give SOME weight to the regular season. Also, do you think they will end up with two play-in games at the tournament site, or play them at campus sites (which, in the 14-team tournament, I would prefer. Having #11 vs. #14 and #12 vs. #13 on Wednesday in Greensboro seems like a recipe for A LOT of empty seats.)

It seems like we have a lot of different guys lead the team in points game to game. It’s not just Snaer running the Douglas offense. Is this trend remarkable in anyway? Either in terms of FSU basketball or NCAA wide?
Not really. Ham is typically committed to a true motion (get shots where they come),
rather than focusing on one player. This is because, as a coach, he knows how to stop any one player.
The Douglas/Thornton days were because he had 1 remarkably gifted offensively player surrounded by a bunch of guys trying not to dent the backboard.

interesting read
The lesson of this investigation is that while strong fan support surely has long-term benefits, the ultimate home-court advantage on game day resides in thin air and long distances traveled.
this appears to be an ESPN Insider article?
So I couldn’t read the whole thing. However, I will say that, about a year ago, there was what I thought was a pretty good article in SI about home-court or home-field advantage which included some statistical analysis for college and pro sports, nationally and internationally, The ultimate conclusion of the article was that the home advantage was not due to travel by the road team or idiosyncrasies of a team’s home arena or field, but it was due to the influence the home crowd has on the officiating. I.E., home teams get the benefit of the doubt on close calls.
For what its worth.
'Scuse me while I whip this out..."
oops…didnt notice it was an insider article. yea i vaguely remember the article you reference. the link above was written by kenpom himself and takes the opposite stance. based strictly on the numbers his thesis is that thin air and long distance are the key variables, hence the quote. i definitely see thin air having an underrated impact but since he was basing the “advantage” on home/away spreads, the travel actually works twice in there… eg. Hawaii’s away numbers would be influenced by their own travel, as well as home numbers for any opponent. though even given the double effect of travel there, i would have expected higher rankings for duke, uk, unc and the like. Kenpom had them well down the list.
yes, it would be hard to imagine that difference in altitude would have NO effect.
I mean, the science is pretty well understood regarding difficulty in breathing at higher altitudes. Interesting that Duke is well down the list, however.

Miami's offensive efficiency for the first half is 128.0
that is pretty good.
On the other hand, Duke is 9th in the conference in defensive efficiency, both in all-games and in conference-games-only tables. That puts them below Boston College. At this point, they are just not good defensively, and it may be driving Coach K a bit batty.

i struggle what to make of miami... they have looked very good at times. and at times not so much.
Up by 16 in Cameron is an impressive feat regardless though. Duke looks to be sleep walking and this years version simply isnt good enough to get away with that… Miami also knocking down shots.
Kadji is looking pretty good as well.
He laid Ryan Kelly down at the end of the first half and—are you ready for this—refs called a BLOCK on Ryan Kelly! How can that happen?
dont look now, but there are teams all OVER that court in Durham "regressing
to the mean."
55-51, Miami

Larkin for UM seems like a good PG,
From the couple of plays I’ve seen (Super Bowl prep interfering).
the sentimental part of me is rooting for Duke,
to make our win on their court more special, and maybe unique this year.

duke misses their last 4 free throws. that will not help you in o.t.

If Dook beats Carolina on Wednesday, we're looking good.
This was a gift.
Duke completely mangled those last couple possessions in
o.t. Just as surprising.
Gotta think Miami is on the right side of the bubble now.
Down to a two-way tie at the top of the standings, and we own a tiebreaker over UNC that cannot be reversed. Nice.

I did NOT think we would be here halfway through conference play.
Feels kinda good!
Here is a stat I like:
Here 22 games into the season, FSU is steadily averaging 1.35 points per possession when they don’t turn the ball over. That is a very strong number, I’d imagine compared to elite offenses.
Here's a bet I like:
Maryland (+9) at Clemson tonight. Bring it home for me, Terps!

Did anyone see UK dismantle UF last night?

I think so...
We get them again and they already have 2 losses. Playing it all out we hold the tiebreaker in the event of a 3 way tie with Puke and UNC.

That we’re having this conversation this late in the season.

I don't know. Were head to head with Carolina, then we take it. If we split with Dook,
Then I don’t know what happens. I do want Duke to take down the heels tonite so that we can, assuming we beat BC, stand alone atop the ACC standings for at least a few days.
If we split with Duke, then the tiebreaker would be our records against the next highest team.
This would probably be UNC. Since it is based on winning percentage and not total wins, Duke can only tie us on this. We are already 1-0 against UNC and it is counted the same as 2-0. So if we are still tied after that it would continue to the next team (probably UVA). We are both 1-0 against UVA, but Duke only plays them once. So here Duke has the advantage and we have to beat UVA a second time just to tie Duke on this part. We each play NC St. (the next likely team) once, so if we both win it would continue to the next team (probably Miami). Duke has lost their only game against Miami, so as long as we split against the Canes we would win the tiebreaker.
Basically we’re in good position in a tiebreaker with Duke (if they beat us), because they have to beat UNC again.
don't think it does (work)
the “regular season ACC championship” is not official.* sop let’s make one up that puts us in front.
*right?
Dogs bark in the night but the caravan moves on.
There is one for seeding purposes
For the ACC tourney
Assuming they split with UNC and UNC finishes second
We would have the tiebreaker, because the next one is record against the highest opponent in standings. Since we are tied for first, it goes to second where we have a 1-0 record against UNC compared to their 1-1.
Wow. I completely missed this. Way too busy.
Awesome to have a Basketball Discussion thread.
Thank you Michael.

Thanks to NC State (I think)
By knocking off Miami last night, NC State clinched the 3 seed in the ACC tournament for Florida State. Virginia can catch us if they win out and we lose out, but the tie breaker (as I understand it) if head-to-head is a split is the record against the next seed up. In this case it will be either Duke or North Carolina, and Virginia has gone 0’fer the big boys while we’ve gone 2-1.
Also, it looks to me like if things finished the way they are now, we’d be facing off against the Miami-BC winner.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
