The most expensive teams in the country
The number one team isnt suprising (Ask Cecil Newton). Just hope FSU can keep up with the SEC teams.

I hate seeing more and more numbers like these.
It’ll be a pretty sad day if/when FSU can no longer compete with the best because they can’t afford to.
Dont think it will ever be an if/when
We still are making money. Have close to $20 mill after expenses. We are not exactly in the red. And we dont need to build a stadium, or anything like that. Just keep in the ball park of paying coaches the right amount. We will always recruit at FSu cause of being in Florida and who we are. Are getting the indoor and will have the facilities. More money would be great. But we could be in far worse positions

hmmm
look who takes in more money, spends more money, and nets a higher profit than Clemson, who supposedly has SEC money when we dont. wonder how one might explain the discrepancy between perception and reality? not to mention beating out Oregon, who has Nike money. something doesnt smell right here, unless this excludes all booster donations and only includes ticket sales, merchandising, etc.
if this does not include donations, i would LOVE to see a list that does. i would be willing to bet there would be some schools batting way above their average in terms of income, only because of the booster money they get.

Its a full time job to get that information
Each state has their own accounting rules and even schools in the state might have their own accounting rules. The way the athletic department has SOP can have such a huge effect on these numbers. One department might count a donation as football specific while another might count it general athletic department. Some set up endowments which have their own accounting rules.
To see just some of the effect these rules have just look at the numbers they have for USC and NW. Somehow USC only made 3 million more than NW? I want to know on what planet that is possible. USC packs over twice the annual fans as NW does. There is a gap in tv money but not that big of a gap that explains this.

Exactly
There are no standards, rules or regulations about how you report any of this information. For instance, if you look in the statistics reported by the Department of Education, KState has a bigger football revenue than we do. Until there is some (really any) standardized way that these numbers are reported, most of them are misleading at best.
FSU spends 18 million while number 4 uf spends 26 million. That is the gap between UF and number 2 tOSU. The gap between tOSU and number 1 Auburn is 5 million.
This is something to look out for but at this point its nothing to actually worry about.

at least we arent outspending ourselves
that “profit” largely goes to supporting every women’s sport, the minor men’s sports, and somewhat supporting baseball and basketball. the sad thing is, baseball and basketball have kinda become recruiting tools lately to get football players in (where the real money is made) as opposed to actual sports that attract their own attention. having a killer track team gets kids like Bracy and Darby interested, and others in the past (Garvin, etc.)

The biggest surpise number to me on the list was how low Ohio State's revenue was
at ~ $60M, considering some others were much higher. Would have guessed that they were right near the peak (i.e. top 3) but they aren’t up there with the Texas’ of the world.

Most likely a case of how the numbers are reported
Most likely they are moving around numbers to the general AD fund in order to make the non revenue sports look better on paper since they field I believe every sport but sand volleyball.

I definitely would not have pegged Northwestern as a big spender like that.
If life gives you lemons, go ahead and punch a Gator fan.
3 reasons I can think of
1- The first and this is a big one on how bogus all these numbers are in general is the cost of their scholarships. 42K per student x 85 for football puts it at 3.5 million. Just for comparison FSU the cost is 5825 per student x 85 for football that is just under a half million.*
2- National recruiting. Because of their target atheletes profile they have to recruit nationally. Anyone in the midwest that is good to great player and smart enough to get into NW can go to Wisconsin, Michigan or ND. So they have to find that kid in the LA area and the other kid in New Jersey and the kid outside of Atl.
3- They have recently made huge investments into the program. I know they have just hired a whole new PR department and are upgrading either the stadium and or other facilities. Fitzpratik has probably received more than a few raises in the last couple of years.

* Scholarships
This plays a role in these numbers. Everything else being equal FSU is going to have some of the cheapest cost in this area because FSU is one of the least expensive schools in the country and most of the talent is in state.
More importantly this is a bogus cost anyways that only exist on paper. The marginal cost for Athletic scholarships is the cost of paperwork so maybe a couple hundred dollars. An incoming football class is 25 kids so in total 4 extra classes worth of kids a year but since they are going to be spread out to a degree they add up to an extra seat or two a class they are in. So its not like you are hiring more professors to cover them. Even at the dorm level they are not even 1 percent of the floor space. The rest of the costs are including in other line items so you can’t use scholarship money to account for those and anyways scholarships are to cover the educational side not the football side.
Even if you don’t want to buy the above argument a huge chunk if not the vast majority of the revenue sport cats would not pay anywhere close to the full cost if they did not receive the scholarship. Most would have the cost reduced dramatically given their backgrounds. They would be entitled to work study programs that would further reduce the cost.
What I am getting at is this is a cost that is on paper only. The athletic department shows in FSU case a negative 500k charge while the academic side shows a 500k positive but the real cost to the school is 0.
