FSU offers Adam Duckett a greyshirt (enroll for spring semester of 2013)
"Everything up there seemed like it fit. Everything was amazing … the atmosphere, the coaches, the facilities, everything … I’m in love with the place," Duckett said Sunday morning after returning home late Saturday night. "It’s just that right now, with my situation with grades and stuff, they can’t really offer me, so they talked about getting me in as a gray shirt or possibly a spot opening up at the end of the [school] year, before I graduate, to get straight in there."
My take: Smart move. This allows FSU to keep more current guys on its roster and help its APR score. And it allows a major project to keep working on his own.
From last week's evaluation:
"Florida State is bringing in Adam Duckett for a visit this weekend, per J.C. Shurburtt of the 247 Network. Who? He's a 6'8", 340 pound offensive lineman out of Orlando East River. As a junior, he was out of shape and scored a 13 on the ACT (ouch!). As a senior, he apparently worked hard, lost 25 pounds, and says he has an ACT score of 20. None of the recruiting services are going to bother rating a kid with an ACT score of 13. Will the NCAA flag this test score? Is the score legit? How are his grades? I don't know. But this senior film is promising. I think at the very least, a sign-and-place could happen here. A 6'8", 340-pound 18-year old is just getting used to his body. There are definitely some tools here, and you have to like his energy. Many time guys this big play soft. He doesn't. I am not saying he is a superstar, and he definitely needs a lot of polish. But if he hadn't 13'd the ACT as a junior, this would be a kid with multiple BCS offers."

I think its a good move
Gives him time to work and make sure hes not a qualifying risk. He was a project who needed to be molded anyway. He would not have played this year anyway. Gives him time to really get in shape and work on his grades. Basically be an EE for next year with more coaching under his belt and if he stays and it works great. It by chance it des not work out. Dont want that to happen. But at this point he would have been as close to a filler with a couple years before being able to contribute at the least
And as Bud says. Cause wes wuz bad boyz liku dem CANEZZZ we still need to keep that APR up

I disagree
I think a greyshirt is fine for a kicking specialist; you need to space them out, can’t afford to have someone there on scholarship as a backup with the 85 limit. However, if a player is not good enough to get a real offer he is probably just going to be a practice body anyway throughout his career. By greyshirting you are telling him yes, we want you, just not that much.
Recent Greyshirts have been:
Josh Gehres (WR bad injury luck)
Anthony Hill (elected to enroll at USF where he is a backup at DT)
If you are going to do it, telling them up front is clearly the way to go, I just think that maybe next year the coaches are going to wish they had that scholarship for someone else.
nah, this is a good use of it
grayshirting is ideal when you can space it out (like Aguayo) or when a kid needs time, whether to get his grades together (or not at all – this is his incentive to make it happen or go to JUCO) or to get his body ready (like we did with Stork). doing it because a guy is a borderline talent isnt a great idea.
"I guess they have a reputation of being more of a tricky team and not being tough. You hit ‘em in the mouth, and they don’t like it. Other teams that have beat them just hit them in the mouth, so that’s what we started out with.’’ - Nick Moody
Different situation
Different grades, less room in the class etc.
Nice to see you back Adam
Where have you been?
This is the way grey shirts should work
Great move. The best part though is the kid knows going in the process that he will be a Grey shirt and will not be in for a surprise come August when the slot did not open up for him and is now told he has to pay his way like a couple of teams that played in the NCG.
F the Deacs - Notre Dame, Rutgers and UConn to the ACC
Agreed.
Was thinking this as I read the article. I know its commonplace, but man o man is that a crappy thing to do to a kid.

I would think that jump from 13 to 20 would factor into this decision as well.
100% the right move by FSU. This kid should still be stoked we’re willing to do this.
People who have seen him recently,
Is he in pretty good shape or carrying a lot of bad weight?
And if he doesn't do his part?
Like staying in shape, keeping grades up, etc, we are not bound to him?
Thanks. I love this then. Seems like the best possible scenario for us and a pretty darn good one for him. He’s bigger than a typical interior house door…

LOL rec’d for comparing prospect to size of common household items.

A standard US residential door size is 36" x 80" (0.91 m x 2.03 m)
That describes the young man accurately, I think.
And that’s a typical exterior door (3’ wide, same height). Interior door openings are usually a little thinner than that!
(You have an enjoyable self description on your profile page, man. I dig. I went there because it looked at first like your avatar was of Josef Stalin…)

I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.
Haha Yes!
Very good visual: a standard entry door, but one that won’t be kicked in so easily…

Sounds like a good move.
This sounds like a great way to give a young man a second chance to prove he can belong. If he has his head on straight and keeps moving in the right direction this can be a win-win situation for this young man and for FSU. Good luck Mr. Duckett alot of people will be pulling for you to succeed.
No money down lease option for both parties...nice
The School doesn’t commit to a scolly, doesn’t lose room in it’s class, has a lock on a player, but doesn’t have to buy if something goes wrong.
The kid, who wouldn’t get into the schools he might want, gets a conditional lock in offer from his top school and does not have to worry about anything but improving himself.
Another great recruiting move by this coaching staff. Didn’t lose anything for a possible future star and if it all goes according to plan the kid fits right in to 2013.
Great deal, IMO
He would need a year, anyway. His grades are unclear? I think I read that he had good grades the fall quarter. He knows he is in if he can keep it up. He has plenty of time going into the Winter quarter to get needed classes finished.
The SAT score would be questioned by the NCAA, but if he can take it again, it would clear the problem, a little quicker
Cheeezzyyyy maybe
But always get chills when I hear the kids who are humble, excited, and proud to be able to get the opportunity to be a NOLE, (i.e. Eligwe, Glauser, etc. & now Duckett).

Here's the most important paragraph in the article:
"They have all of their spots filled right now. It’s still a toss up between going in as a gray shirt and going to junior college. Last night I was talking to Coach Trickett and I think they want to get me in there as soon as possible, but also want to do it right."
This tells me the coaches are pretty certain that we’ll be getting a nice haul on signing day.

I missed that initially
Good catch. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite times of the year.

You don't go from a 13 to a 20 ACT score by studying over a few months
You get it from being immature and half-assing the ACT the first time because you weren’t interested in being there, and then taking it more seriously the second time. It’s easy to under-perform, but its impossible to over perform (except for very low probability lucky X-mas treeing)
I always heard that you get ~13 points for putting your name on the scantron. This tends to go along with your assessment imo
by NeuroNole on Jan 29, 2012 7:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
You get an 11 for showing up
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACT_%28test%29
A 13 is 6th percentile, or 94 out of every 100 students do better.
Questions.
Does a gray shirt keep him from enrolling in school completely? Can he take some CC classes? Can he be a part of the S&C program?
Go Knights! Go Boilers! Go 'Noles! Not necessarily in that order.
And he's allowed to be a part of the S&C program that way?

I really hope so.
This kid could be a monster by his junior year if he’s allowed to partake now. 340lb wall of muscle eating DT’s and LB’s for us.

Not technically right?
I’m sure he’ll get some kind of guidance on nutrition, workouts, etc…

Loud & clear... haha
Well hope he strives towards his goal. That’s one big fella & if he is determined I’d hate to be between him & ___________.

I like this a lot
Even if it takes him the full 2.5 years to start contributing it’s worth it if he really comes around by his Junior year. Can’t teach that kind of size geez.
This
Absolutely needs to be addressed in a post recruiting poll… Who leads the Noles off the bus in August?

no doubt that this is a good move and a GREAT opportunity
He has the size, and now we get to see if he has the heart and desire! Good luck 2 tha big fellow. We should make a point 2 get 2 or 3 greatshirt projects every year. You can learn alot about a person when the pressure is on and not 2 mention the life changing aspect of it. FSU gives another kid a Golden opportunity …I love this program!! Good work guys.

FSU gives another kid a Golden opportunity
FSU gives golden opportunities, not Golden opportunities…that’s when you tell a kid that your program won’t be on probation, give him a scholarship, and then proceed to be bowl inelegible for the duration of his eligibility.
