Ongoing/Off-Topic Discussion Thread #70

You know the drill. If you have a off-topic comment, or want to start a off-topic thread, please do it here instead of in an existing thread on another subject. If you have a non-recruiting question, ask it here.

  • Please "recommend/REC" this post so it stays pinned.
  • New Members, please read through the Tomahawk Nation Welcome Guide! We put a lot of work into that and it should enhance your experience here.
  • New Members are also encouraged to read the Did You Know: A Guide to Better Using TN which contains some tips and shortcuts to make your experience here easier and more enjoyable.
  • For information on recruiting prospects, please refer to the Florida State Recruiting Board 2012. Our recruiting writers work hard and do a great job of keeping the recruiting information as current as possible.
  • We are asking our members to comment about recruiting on the current 2012 Recruiting Discussion Thread currently open in the Recommended Fanpost section on the right side of the page, instead of the recruiting board. There you can feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.
  • The SPECIAL PAGES AND GREATEST HITS section is located on the left side of the front page for your convenience. Here you will find the links to some of the most referenced stories from Tomahawk Nation, the Current Roster Sorted by Eligibility Year, as well as other TN favorites.
  • If your fanpost is under 200 words or unlikely to inspire extended discussion, it will be deleted. It's not fair to have people take the time to write quality fanposts and have them pushed down by stuff that isn't fanpost quality.
  • Links to articles or quick blurbs belong in this thread or in the fanshot area. This also applies to links to articles with your opinion attached.
  • REMINDER: To recommend a comment, please click on the red actions button FIRST, THEN click on the red REC button.
  • REMINDER: If you get lost following a long thread, you can click on the "UP" button on the comment you are wondering about, and it will take you up to the original comment that the member was replying to.
  • REMINDER: When replying to a comment, please click on the red reply button FIRST, THEN type your reply.
  • REMINDER: Comments such as "First" or "Second" (etc.) posted to start a thread will be deleted and you may face a 1 day ban (or more). If you can't think of something substantial to post, either don't post anything or please go comment on another site.
  • WARNING: We don't allow profanity in non-game threads. Please don't do it.

What do you guys think about Halo 4?

When I heard that “Reach” was coming out I protested it, but it turned out to be pretty damn good. I hope 343 industries doesn’t ruin the empire that Bungie made.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, Packer fans will call us crybabies and we will be forced to kick their tooth in. I really don't want to go to jail (again).

Yeah, I laughed the most at the following points:
  • - She’s “natural”. No the f_ck she’s not.
  • - Anavar is a legal steroid. Only by prescription.
  • - You can gain 50 lbs on anavar. LOL!!! It was designed to combat muscle wasting in burn victims, HIV & cancer patients. Very mild & not potent at all.
  • - Ruptured Achilles didn’t make me laugh (I did it—it sucks), but it is indicative of stanolzolol usage…..as it is a common steroid for women to use, provides the type of ridiculously lean & full muscles she has, and makes your connective tissues weak & brittle.

Next time you are in the Orlando area I am going to try and be there. I am always up for a good laugh and a Guiness black being an Irishman.

I ran across something that I think is funny anyway. You might make note of this one and use it in an appearance.

IDIOT, n.
A member of a large and powerful tribe whose influence in human affairs has always been dominant and controlling. The Idiot’s activity is not confined to any special field of thought or action, but “pervades and regulates the whole.” He has the last word in everything; his decision is unappealable. He sets the fashions and opinion of taste, dictates the limitations of speech and circumscribes conduct with a dead-line.

You know what is so weird?

TN just lost 6 coaches, LB Dalton Santos, LB Otha Peters, and are rumored to also be losing current commit Korren Kirven to Bama. They whiffed on JUCO day and DeAnthony Arnette left for Michigan State. That’s just this months news. I’m shocked JWJ, Jernigan, Goldman and Pender would remain Vol leans. What gives??

I highly doubt she will go for it. Dont think either place will compare with a hotel on the beach. Oh well, at least she let me postpone it till spring instead of doing it last fall. Of course she had to pick the one day in spring that matters.

But he’s given up huge plays off of play action ever since he’s stepped on campus. He has improved on the little things though like playing far off his man and going for the kill when they catch it, then whiffing the tackle.

They played the entire post-signing day segment three times in a row, including Jimbo's interview.

It was the same as we’ve been hearing all along. Great quality, tribute to the entire recruiting staff, schedule is tough this year (Jimbo said he thinks the out of conference schedule is tough), he’s pleased with the players we got. The biggest thing I heard came when the interviewer pointed out that last year Jimbo was cautious and unsure about whether or not our team could live up to the hype and preseason rankings and asked him if he felt this year we could. Jimbo essentially said he feels that this year we should definitely be able to turn the corner and compete at the highest levels. I believe he actually said we should be able to compete with the top teams. Loved hearing that.

You guys have a right to your opinion, of course. Mine is that I’m not going to sit around on Saturdays if all we play are mandatory ACC scheduled teams and Whoevertheheck University. Great stuff. I want to leave a trail to the national title…

by SolidNole on Feb 7, 2012 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

What about from the standpoint of the revenue that playing a legit team would bring in?

We could have potentially had another visit from gameday if FSU and WV played. One of the best offenses against one of the best defense, both being ranked in the top 10 preseason poll.

I am fine with replacing them with an easier school because our schedule is probably fine without a big game here but it would bring tons of money in from our program.

According to the article listed above, it looks like we can’t just schedule a cupcake team because it would hurt our BCS bowl bid.

“FBS and BCS teams like the Seminoles are only allowed to have one win over an FCS team per year count toward their bowl eligibility.”

by Nole Patrol on Feb 7, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

What if we played a team like Texas or ND?

A game like this would probably sell out quickly and bring in good revenue to the school and we would be slated to win by at least a touchdown if we got them at home.

Maybe the worry is more about playing the same team the following year away or something, I’m not sure.

by Nole Patrol on Feb 7, 2012 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

I do think there’s a difference between scheduling Middle Tennessee as a replacement and scheduling Texas. Someone else in this thread (couple of people, actually) have framed this as a patsy versus NC contender choice. I don’t think it is. When WV was scheduled, they were not projecting at a top 10 ranking. What about another South Florida-type team? What about Purdue (someone else’s unofficial favorite around here)? Etc, etc.

by SolidNole on Feb 7, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn't do it without a return visit

by SolidNole on Feb 7, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

The schools we “reached out” to were OU, TX A&M, etc… a level above UCONN, Ole Miss, or Rutgers. And the odds are even higher we beat Tulane, UAB, etc… And we still get 4 or so of UF, UM, CU, UNC, VT, + ACC Champ game, BCS game. You could say that the OU game cost us a chance at the ACC Championship game and a BCS game with a straight face. So we have one cool game at the expense of two cool ones that make us more money and prestige.

There is still some conference alignment talk going on

Don’t know if it has credence. Speculation that TV networks might steer both Notre Dame and FSU to the big 12. I am skeptical but you never know. After talk of collapse Texas has eased up a bit on control and Notre Dame and FSU to this conference would definitely call for new TV rights. In fact a conference with FSU, Notre Dame, Texas and Oklahoma would rival any conference.

Yeah, the top comments were about women spraying people at the superbowl on a college football form.

There were literally 3 or 4 posters, who posted more than anybody, and literally just trolled. There wasn’t a single comment made by any of them that was football related.

Are there any good places to go to see real college football discussion that isn’t just comprised of FSU fans?

I was listening to the radio this morning

and they read an email they received from a woman who was upset because her husband wouldnt have sex with her because he was too depressed after the Patriots lost the Superbowl. The host asked for callers to call in if they had experienced this. The first caller was a female Seminole fan saying neither her nor her husband want to have sex after an FSU loss (both big time Noles) and she went on and on about how big of a fan she was and how much she loved the Noles. Being that it was a Washington DC radio station, it was great to hear!

  • Side note, the next caller was a Cane fan haha

by Miaminole on Feb 11, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

I respect your opinion on this, but I disagree. However, it’s interesting to note that the book and, therefore, the movie are loosely based on the real life espionage ring at the top of British Intelligence, known at the Cambridge Five. Maybe the slow pace derives from simply telling a true story that in real life would have played out from the 40s into the 60s. Now, Safe House, that’s a whole different tale…

by SolidNole on Feb 11, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

I understand completely

I feel like I should like it more than I did, could be that I watched it on little to no sleep so the pace only made it harder to stay awake.

I thought it was well acted, and it is probably among the most realistic of spy movies in that it things can move at a snails pace in real life, not to mention that there isnt an explosion every 5 minutes. I just couldnt stay interested.

by cerebralfish on Feb 9, 2012 9:17 AM EST reply actions

Random (I guess this is the place for that)

This is kind of a conference realignment type question, but it doesn’t fit within the scope of the many core rumors/ideas that drive those (ie money vs academics vs FSU somehow being a better school by being in the same conference as regal Duke). So I’ll put it here.

As much as has been made about ND’s necessity to join a conference, they don’t have an option that fits them like a glove. They have their own TV deal which drives their current independence and reticence to join another conference.

People have been talking about the move to “superconferences” for quite a while. As we see, either due to poor management/sales or poor choices of schools, the ACC clearly has made moves which didn’t increase their revenues. The main goal of the addition of schools has been primarily for TV contract leverage and renegotiations.

Why hasn’t an ND AD attempted to create a new type of superconference, a “minisuperconference” comprised of a smaller amount of teams with large national brands?

The minisuperconference would have to be schools with massive national brands, and no conference that it really “fit” well with. For example, Bama or UF would never leave the SEC. It fits excellently regionally, is football-minded, and has excellent resources.

Imagine a conference with FSU, ND, Miami, and a handful of select others. Large resources can overcome geographical diversity, and traditional powerhouse football programs will dot this conference.

Don’t criticize this idea, because it’s perfect, not naive at all, and beautiful.

Hey, Phillynole.

If you read this, what are some high end restaurants in Philadelphia that you can recommend? Wife and I are going in mid-March. We have been to Le Bec Fin and a few others but are there any new ones? Thanks.

by MRMAGOO on Feb 11, 2012 3:24 PM EST reply actions

Haha, you're ahead of me, then. I've never been to Le Bec.

I don’t really go out to the high-end places much, so I will leave the reviews to the experts. Here’s Craig LaBan: http://www.philly.com/philly/columnists/craig_laban/

Georges Perrier is actually leaving Le Bec after LaBan wrote a bad review. I’m hoping I get there one of these years.

Thanks, PhillyNole. We spent $450.00 at Le Bec Fin in 2003

and we only had a $50.00 bottle of wine. This was for two people. Not a cheap place but it was our 30th anniversary and was worth the money at the time. Also heard it was on the decline. I think we’ll go to Vetri this trip. Why we’re leaving Florida for Philadelphia in March is still a mystery. Thanks again.

with this news, i am convinced our OL is a cluster-you-know-what.. he was looking really good at DT, so this makes no sense at all.

Per his own request, do not be surprised if FSU DL Cam Erving takes snaps with the OL during spring practice

I love Cam’s potential at DT if he can learn to keep his hands off of peoples face masks. I am on record as saying that I think Cam and Timmy are out 2 best DTs and there were several key situations where the coaches had that combo in which leads to to believe the coaches have similar thoughts on those 2. So moving Cam to OL is not an idea i am fond of at atll

I'm re-watching last years FSU-UF game from last season.

I really cannot wait to see this defense take the field next year…It’s scary how good they could be. I only hope the offense can put it together in 2012.

by RunninNole5 on Feb 12, 2012 2:54 PM EST reply actions

I think the offense will be good enough to capitalize on what the defense gives them.

And will in turn, put emphasis on not putting the defense in a rough spot. The gameplan next year should be very defense oriented. Of course, if the OL makes great strides..we could see an attacking, gambling offense if percentages dictate a payoff knowing the defense can bail them out. Speculating on ’12 is making me drool. I could EASILY see anything between 10-4 & 14-0. Closer to 10-4 the more likely scenario. Is it September yet?!?

I love watching him accelerate after a pick.

He is putting out at around 150% trying to get to full stride. Puts everything into it.

A lights out safety who can also lock down almost any receiver lined up across from him. Plus I love his flying forearm/elbow he likes to sneak in on opposing players. Guy laid out two seperate receivers this year with a elbow to the helmet.

Look out for Telvin to have a monster season. He is like a heat seeking missile on blitz packages now and a headhunter with Karlos on kick coverage.

Joyner is a serious talent no doubt

Just speculating on Irving but Goldmon is coming in also. Can Goldmon play as a freshman like Tim Jernigan? If so Cam needed to compete for playing time against him, Dawkins, and others maybe even Jacobbi.

Irving has already proven to NFL scouts that he can play defensive tackle. It couldn’t hurt his market value if he proves he could also be a very effective offensive tackle and play that at a high level and the move just might keep him on the field more during his career at FSU.

Cam Irving

Does this say anything about the injury status of the current OL? IMO, we have plenty of real good players on the DL and more in the wings, depth is not a problem.

In Miami’s heyday, they moved several DL to OL that became stars on the OL. The DL are usually stronger and faster, not usually bigger. However, in Cam’s situation he is as close to being as big as anyone.

One thing about his movement, and us going after two Jr. college guys, that we think that 2012 is the year, EJ will be a Senior, we have all but one receiver back, we have our nucleus of RB’s that played. Our defense is loaded.

When you recruit athletes that can play more than one position, it allows you to move someone to strengthen a position without significantly weakening the other position.

For all you gun hobbyists out there...

Me and my wife are looking to get 1 or 2 guns for sport. She prefers rifles for target shooting (less recoil), but has done skeet as well. I have done only paintball lol.

We don’t need anything special, but would like to get a shotgun and rifle to enjoy a variety. I sort of prefer the traditional break barrels as opposed to the pump action, though would consider a pump action for the sheer terror the sound would send through a would be robber.

Any suggestions for something to start out with?

They don’t appear to retail near me, but I like their dual barrel.

by SimaNole on Feb 13, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

That crack of a O/U or side by side is very distinctive too....

If you do use this shotgun for sporting (clays/skeet/wingshooting) you’re going to wish you have the semi-auto or O/U, however its like a Harley with out a windshield. If you start with the pump and its not a problem. You’ll get accustomed to a pump. I’m a huge fan of Stoeger shotguns, they’re a branch of Benelli. O/U and autos are significantly more expensive. The Remington 870 as far as cheap pump guns might be the most realiable shotgun ever made, you can burry that thing in a swamp, dig it up a year later and it will still fire and cycle….

I shoot a Stoeger model 2000 12 guage for anything and everything and it’s maybe 500 bucks out the door and its a pretty semi-auto.

As far as a rifle, a good old fashion 22, .17, or 22 mag will be plenty fun to shoot and has zero recoil. Any of the mainstream rifle companies make affordable bolt, semi auto, or level action rim fires. Remington, Savage, Browning, Henry, Ruger, etc. With this you can shoot plenty of small game and even pigs, i’ve taken out plenty of nussiance hogs with my 22 mag. Welcome to the addiction! You can never have too many guns and these are things you can pass on to your children. I got a little one on the way and i’m already planning what guns I want to get for it. This looks like a fine opp to purchase a nice 22-250.

FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!

by cmk07c on Feb 13, 2012 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Wow thanks for this!

Ok… it took me a while to decipher this with no prior knowledge lol. So your are suggesting I start with a semi-auto pump, over the side-by-side or over-under? Also, I don’t think we want to spend $500 on one. We were looking under $300. As far as the 870… there are tons of 870 variations!

We will stick to mainstream 22cal rifles if they don’t really vary. I imagine Dicks or Sports Authority are fine for these?

by SimaNole on Feb 13, 2012 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

actually its looking like $300 will likely be on the very bottom range for a decent rifle…

by SimaNole on Feb 13, 2012 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve actually zeroed in on the Remington 770 and the Savage Axis XP in terms of fitting in the budget and bolt action, and also maybe the Ruger 10/22 semi-auto. Semi-auto might be easier for the wife to handle with a ten round capacity, and it’s cheaper/lighter.

by SimaNole on Feb 13, 2012 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

Good Call

No such thing as semi auto pump, those are seperate, i’m saying that the transition is weird. Don’t start shooting semi-autos and then go to pump or vice versa, you’re going to get conditioned to what your shooting. When I first started shooting birds and clays i was using a 870 youth model, got it for my 7th or 8th birthday and it was 20 guage. Infact it’s still at my parents. Now i’ve sinced moved on to a semi-auto and everytime i use a pump, its like instinct to NOT eject the shell to go to number 2 and 3, because i’m used to shooting a auto now. Half the time i pull the trigger and say damn i forgot i’m not shooting a semi-auto or O/U. If you shoot a pump, you’ll be fine, just don’t go back and fourth. With a rifle it doesn’t matter, its not like your shooting multiple targets on one sitting, you shoot then adjust, or just kill your target. Make sense?

There are so many variations of the 870 because there are different editions for different purposes. They range from, home defense, waterfowl, turkey, wingmaster, etc. I would suggest you get a standard 3 inch chambered 870 with 26 or 28 inch barrel. Composite or Camo gun will hold up better to elements, but the wood grain and blued barrelled are a lot nicer looking. I’m not sure if you want 20 or 12, 12 is a lot mor versatile, because there are a lot more types of rounds, but it will be tougher on your wife. A pump gun kicks more than a semi auto, because the action absorbs a lot of the kick on a semi-auto, while its you ejecting on a pump. Sports authority would be good to shop and they seem to be knowledgeable. If you go to a gun shop, the selection will be better as will the knowledge but sometimes the price can be a little off. If you have an academy near by i would highly suggest going there and they’re really helpful and from what i gather have best prices.

Remington is tried and true, infact I have that 770 in a 22 mag caliber, its just a good old fashioned rimfire edition of the 700. It will last forever, I also have a cheap Savage semi auto and its a good little gun and right around a couple hundred bucks. Just go to the gun store, shoulder them both and which ever one feels and fits you best will shoot the best for you i promise. Also, word of advice, My Dad and I KILL it at Ducks Unlimited and NRA banquets, you can buy guns there and the proceeds go to the cause, its a good way to meet other enthusiast and buy a unique gun at a good price, over the past 5 years my Dad has picked up well over 5-6 guns there and if its not a pistol you can walk out of there with it. No waiting period on a hunting rifle/shotgun, in most non-wierd hippie liberal states. I imagine in Cally or Mass you’d have to wait the 24 or 48 hours like a pistol purchase.

You should walk out spending no more than 700 hundred on those guns. an 870 in 3 inch chamber with standard 26 or 28 inch barrell will run you anywhere from 280 to a few hundred bucks. (when i say chamber that means what it will shot 3 inch chamber will shoot 2 3/4 inch sheels up to 3 inch, they go up to 3.5 but they are more money as are the shells) That 22 will be 200-400. Good luck and enjoy, this is just the start. You start buying nice O/U and top of the line A bolts and your spending over a K per gun. But with guns you pay for what you get, the exception being the 870 its cheap and the best.

FSU, home of the Bandit! Enough said!

by cmk07c on Feb 14, 2012 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

I understand now with regard to the first paragraph. Stick with one. Looks like I’ll have to settle for pump or semi-auto since they are more economical. I might go for the 12-gauge if it’s more versatile and likely cheaper rounds, and combine it with a semi-auto to compromise on kick force? Don’t care for wood grain in a shotgun, so i’ll probably look into a composite.

As for rifles, maybe semi-auto as well for reduced kick for the wife. .22LR cartridge seems most common and economical as well.

Thanks for helping me out! We’ll go feel some out now and find what fits best.

by SimaNole on Feb 14, 2012 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

Good Luck!

Touching all the guns and shouldering will be of more help then me giving advice. Just tell the guy, i’m here for a 22 here is what i want to spend, i’m also here for a 12 here is what I want to spend. The used route is a nother good option.
