Welcome back to another edition of 'Noles News. Today's batch is mostly about catching up on the happenings of FSU's opponents, as most of the 'Noles news has been previously reported by us. I also want to remind you to use the recruiting discussion threads. They've been rocking lately.

A reminder: Today's post is brought to you by Kevin Willson. Please help out my cousin in his quest to have his commercial shown on the Super Bowl by voting! It's very funny. He's a young Christian filmmaker who devotes much of his time to filming missionary work all over the world. In the past years he has filmed missionary workers in very dangerous parts of Afghanistan and remote locations in China. Kevin also done documentary filmwork in South America highlighting groups who bring wheelchairs to some of the remote villages in the mountains of Peru. The Doritos Crash the Superbowl Contest goes along way in supporting his other filmmaking endeavors throughout the year! Thanks and spread the word and vote as often as you can! Remember, you can vote multiple times!

HD owns idiot VT fan who says FSU's defense sucks because VT scored 40 on them in 2010. Idiot also says Clemson has way more talent than FSU. Basically, full of fail.

Chris in Arlington, Va., by way of Blacksburg writes: Heather, Why do you keep talking of FSU's D? As if it is the measuring stick of great D's? After FSu lost to VT in the ACC champ game in 2010, and 40 dropped on the beloved D, i have no idea why they got so much hype. The same goes for next yr. Yes they have talent, but why would things be different? That talent obviously hasn't gelled? Clemson and VT will have much better D's in my opinion.. Jesus, VT had three starters injured and held Michigan to 189 yards all game. Next yr, they will be even better.... Its not just consistency with VT its player development (play calling is our downfall) and Clemson has WAY more talent than FSU. Why does ESPN love FSU soo much?

Thanks for reminding me why I left the ESPN boards for good.

FSU fan: FSU has a much better D then Clemson, VTech has a good D but not as good as FSU’s.

VT fan: Oh yeah!? The same FSU defense that lost to Virginia that we shut out on the road!?

That place is pathetic.

A few thoughts from today

VT is going to be in full rebuilding mode on offense next season. I want them early in the year. No way they could do much against our returning defense, if the defense executes.

Dyer is transferring, I don’t know what is going on at Auburn but that place is turning from a dumpster fire to a full building fire.

Penn State fans look like a cult that just lost their leader, ignoring the tragic situation that occurred to worship Joe Pa is shocking to watch.

I suspect Auburn will be fine once Gene moves on. Even so, he could hire a couple of great coordinators and be very competitive. Auburn has plenty of money and fan support.

A great team will overcome bad calls

No matter how many go against them. They should be able to shrug it off and keep making enough plays to keep themselves in the game, and then make a play or two to win the game. I’m sick of hearing about Refs. They’re terrible. Yes. But, elite teams win regardless of circumstance(s). They suck it up, drive on, and put more points on the scoreboard than the opponent.

Not even our ‘09 D gave up 70, that’s just disturbing. However, I’d take Ellington over any of our RB’s, and Sammy Watkins over any of our WR’s, DeAndre Hopkins is a beast too. I’m just so glad they lose Dwayne Allen, that helps us a lot.

My 2 Biggest questions for the D next year

1. Does Telvin move back to OLB to replace Nigel? Its obvious our top 3 LB’s is CJ, Telvin and Vince.
2. Does Carlos take over the other safety spot bc Brooks is will be playing so much Nickle?

by dj2fsu on Jan 9, 2012 12:30 PM EST reply actions

1) I’d guess so. I haven’t seen orheard anything about Jeff Luc being good enough to replace any of those three.
2) Right now I think Brooks is a better safety, but LOS is a freak athlete who we NEED to get on the field. Maybe we have LJ and Brooks as starting safeties and in nickel situations we move brooks down and put Karlos at safety. That’s a way to garuntee our best 5 DB’s get on the field (assuming XR27 comes back).

Insane though of the moment

Move Moody to Will. Reason – would love to see Moody lay the wood as many times per game as Bradham made tackles. Also don’t need Moody to play safety anymore with upcoming talent and we’re short on help at LB. Possibly more realistic scenario is to move Telvin to WLB, have Luc backup Vince, and play Moody as 2nd string behind Telvin at the Will.

by NoleLaw on Jan 9, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

No...

Moody wont see serious reps. Our backers are better then he is and our safeties are too. Love the effort, love the hitstick, don’t love the getting caught out and poor angles.

by fsugrizz on Jan 9, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

If he moved to LB, he would be in the 2-deep

Jones, Williams, and Telvin are the top three.

The what do you have? Terrell, Terrance, Luc, Moody, Eligwe. With Moody’s experience, he’d be listed in the 2-deep over some of the younger guys who haven’t seen any significant snaps on D – IMO. Think about what our LBs look like if we have just 1 or 2 injuries.

by NoleLaw on Jan 9, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

What experience

With Moody’s experience,
He has no LB experience in Stoops system. He would have to read keys and worry about angles to a much larger degree.

Please dont confuse his hit stick ability with his actual talent level. Kid could start for a lot of defenses just not the one he is currently on. We return 6 scholarship LB’s who have all had more time and experience playing LB in stoops system then moody and look to be bringing in the best LB in the recruiting class.

Also furthermore we play a ton of nickel. So when we line up as a 4-2-5 Moody would continue to be useless because he wouldn’t be one of the 5 best DB’s nor would I want him over Jones or Telvin.

by fsugrizz on Jan 9, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

He doesn't have to start to contribute

I think I get what you’re saying but I also think that sometimes people get too caught up in “who’s starting?” Could he play 15 to 20 quality snaps for us there? I think he could.

I would also suggest to not underestimate the value of being physical. For all of the stats out there like “the team that doesn’t make mistakes will win” the one that I rarely see mentioned is, “the team that is the most physical wins the game” the vast majority of the time. Maybe because there’s no objective standard?

Teams that hit cause fumbles. They cause teams to jump prematurely. They cause bad throws, etc.

Our history is FULL of guys just like Moody, that became very valuable contributors, even if they didn’t play 75 snaps on Saturdays.

If Moody has the talent, as you say, to start for a lot of defenses, then I suspect he has the ability to make really good contributions on this one.

Finally, playing what we call free safety, while not the optimum training to play Will would still be very good experience if he were to play Will in a dime type package or when resting either Jones and/or Smith.

It's what we learn after we know it all that counts. John Wooden

by Sobering on Jan 9, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe...

I just dont see it. I think that he would earn a position for being a ferocious hitter, but not by being a guy you can depend on to play assignment football. Given him more assignments at LB IMO would be a negative. For the one nasty hit a game he could give up 2-3 explosive plays. I’d take a slightly less bit hitter in Mike Harris over Moody ever time because while Mike isn’t a decleater (he can and did versus UM) he plays the right angle and wraps up.

I could be completely wrong, it wouldn’t be the first and sure wont be the last.

by fsugrizz on Jan 9, 2012 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

Experience

Reports had Moody taking practice snaps at LB this past season and I believe he played LB in HS. I also believe the safeties in Stoops’ system should know the responsibilities of the LBs. If you ask me whether I’d rather have the Hitstick at LB or Terrell, I’m going to say “Hitstick”. If you change Moody’s coverage responsibilities from safety to Will, I think you’d see him do a bit better. I’ll let HUD coach up the angles and keys. It may be easier to teach him something new which allows him to hit more than it is to retrain the bad habits he learned under the old system, have him chasing DBs, and having him blow coverage assignments because of his aggressiveness and desire to lay the wood. Whether he would surpass Terrence or the true freshman on the depth chart depends upon what the staff does with him in Spring ball. Eligwe will not be here for Spring ball. We can all agree that C.Jones is a beast, but he was not a beast during his true freshman season. I think Moody would see more snaps at LB than he would at DB. The change might give him some new spark. I’ll leave the position changes up to the coaches, but don’t really see a cure for lack of depth at LB esp. if we have 1-2 injuries at LB and no changes are made.

by NoleLaw on Jan 9, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

What you say I can't vehamently disagree

But if were moving players to LB…Count me in the JWJ>LB bandwagon before I’d ever take Moody. Why would you take Moody over Terrell. Nigel isn’t a slouch. And the only LB spot open is Will, that would be Moody over Luc. I’ve wouldnt like that at all.

If we have 1-2 guys go down. Well then I’d expect to see a whole lot more of the already semi base nickel defense.

by fsugrizz on Jan 9, 2012 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

I'd prefer Telvin at Will due to his ability to read and react.

With Bradham in the lineup Telvin was not going to see as many snaps at Will as he did at Mike, which is why I think he was there for the time being. I’d like to see Telvin on the field more, which is why I’d move him over to Will now that Bradham is gone. I’d also move Luc to Mike because he would see more snaps backing up Vince than he would backing up Telvin.

People were down on Bradham taking bad angles until about half way through the season, yet he led the team in tackles, what three years in a row?

I don’t think we have the RB depth to move JWJ but we do have the DB depth to move Moody. Freeman, Pender, Beverly (if the knee holds up), Thompson (if the back holds up), and what else do you have? 1-2 injuries there and we have nothing left.

If you don’t move Moody, we have a two deep for Spring ball, with no competition for 2nd string, assuming everyone stays healthy. I haven’t seen anything from Nigel and will be content if Jones plays every down, possibly catching breathers in Nickel packages.

Our Nickel package works well, but it’s not necessarily a great run-stop defense. I think Moody moving would make sense, but I’ll leave it up to the coaches.

by NoleLaw on Jan 9, 2012 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t understand why people are so down on Moody moving to LB. The guy can read and recognize very well and his deficiencies at safety would be non existent at LB. You have to bet that he will come out and work very hard in the spring being a 5th year senior. If he earns it in the spring I have no issue with him being in the mix at LB. Telvin is not an every down LB anyways.

by ONOLE05 on Jan 9, 2012 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Poor angles dont change without a ton of reps

and he struggled at reading keys. Those are critical to a LB and his coverage wasn’t exactly stellar either.

Depends on who we close with

Would love, love, love to see Latu in the rotation after the ink dries.

With the freshmen class we pulled in last year, JUCO bandaids on the OL are just what the doctor ordered this cycle.

any chance that if Glauser or Latu impress that Hart would be redshirted because he is so young? I know he has the raw talent but it seemed like he made a fair number of mental mistakes and maybe could use an extra year to get stronger/develop mentally?

by jmunole on Jan 9, 2012 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

I say no.

Of the young guys, he has the most experience. We’re not in a position to redshirt that experience, mistakes and all.

by NoleLaw on Jan 9, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

I'd love to see him

take a redshirt and get an extra year of development but thats hard to see happening

That is why I gave up on those boards a long time ago…saying things like “stars matter on the whole” gets responses like “(insert players name) didn’t work out and he was a 5 star” or “Ed reid was a 2 star recruit”…god forbid if people utalize advanced stats or strength of schedule adjusted measures for judging offenses and defenses
That is why TN is the best boards for engaged, logical thinkers to have friendly discussions about football
Quick question…how many players on Miami’s recruit list are FSU or UF worthy…I count around 8…including players that we would not have taken because of previously filling needs (J Hamilton and Duke Johnson come to mind)

by lovemynoles09 on Jan 9, 2012 12:47 PM EST reply actions

TN is also the best board because

We know that the SCOREBOARD is all that matters and with a little more research under his belt, Bob Elliott will have a fantastic site.

The thing about stars

At least for me, I trust my own two eyeballs. I’m not sure how much I trust the guys that hand out the stars. Arrogant, I’m sure, that way, I’m sure.

There are “can’t miss” guys out there, no doubt. And the thing about them is, you don’t have to be an expert to pick them out, after all, “they can’t miss.”

But there seems to be this thought that all 3 stars are equal. And it’s just not so, even though their ratings might seem to indicate that they are.

I agree that you want the highest rated class/players you can get. But at some point, I think you have to make your own judgments about players.

It's what we learn after we know it all that counts. John Wooden

Although there’s a part of me that wants to correct it.

Why is it every time I get 3 stars of police notoriety on GTA IV, Al Golden calls me asking for my commitment?

Why is Penn State so upset about O'Brien?

I don’t like how Arrington, Blackledge, other former players, ESPN analysts, boosters, etc are all knocking him b/c he is not a “Penn State guy”. Why is that a pre-req? Who says he can’t be successful just because he isn’t an alum? It sounds ignorant and arrogant to me. This certainly isnt the time for their fanbase, alumnus, et al to be acting high and mighty.

by BostonNole on Jan 9, 2012 3:05 PM EST reply actions

They wanted a guy who would have Pride in the school

but unfortunately with JoePa there for almost my parents entire lives its hard to get something who would have that level of pride for Penn State and not have close connections to Joe Pa.

by fsugrizz on Jan 9, 2012 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Thats fine - But how about cutting ties with Paterno and moving forward

And if any coach doesn’t have pride in the school that employs him (or her), he should be fired or not hired in the first place. Period.

by BostonNole on Jan 9, 2012 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

I meant

that he had Pride in Penn State before the hire. Sort of like Michigan’s hiring of Hoke. Hoke is a Wolverine at heart and just got stronger as the coach. The issue lies with the fact anyone with that level of pride before becoming the coach would be an alumni and thus related to PSU.

by fsugrizz on Jan 9, 2012 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Ok so Hoke is a nice story; I get it.

But what about other school’s coaches?

Is Les Miles not prideful of LSU?
Is Saban not prideful of Bama?
Is Chip Kelly not prideful of Oregon?

I just don’t understand why a school would want to cut itself off from the outside world. Why not expand your search base to find the best coach possible (not saying O’Brien is or isn’t), not just who the best coach who is also an alum and available is?

by BostonNole on Jan 9, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

You listed

former players, and other Penn State alum upset that he isn’t a Penn St guy. I gave you their reasons. I think its a bad hire simply because I dont think he’s that great of a coach. I agree with you on this part

I think you go hire the best guy you can without limitations. Unfortunately for Penn State..they might have.

by fsugrizz on Jan 9, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Gotcha.

Yeah, best guy you can get w/o limitations seems like a no brainer to me.

I’m not sure if he is the best or not and he is certainly getting dealt a terrible hand. But regardless, I don’t like the attitude that is coming out of State College on this whole matter.

by BostonNole on Jan 9, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

If this whole affair has taught us anything it’s that Penn State fans are very odd and have messed up priorities.

The Paterno years somehow gave them this “all class” reputation that no one bothered to challenge until recently.

So he broke some rules? When has that mattered on the Plains?
