2012 Recruiting Discussion Thread #37

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread. Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects. We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker. Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

If you post information from another site, please indicate from where you read it.

Specific Player Questions (Check here before asking)

  • Mario Edwards Jr.- Michael@TN reported that Edwards commitment to Florida State is again solid after the Unofficial Visit during the NC State 34-0 blowout. Edwards Jr will Official Visit Florida State on January 13.
  • Dante Fowler- His recruitment has been very interesting. He's grown up a Florida State fan, but still has ties to Florida. He's taken multiple visit to Florida, including this summer when he was rumored to be leaning toward Florida. He also took in the beating Florida received from Alabama in early October. He's remained a Florida State commitment, but is scheduled to take official visits to University of Southern California, as well as Louisiana State. Those schools should not matter though, as he's been quoted as saying it's down to Florida and Florida State. His recruitment should be something interesting to watch.
  • Dorial Green-Beckham- FSU is not in the race for this receiver from Missouri. His brother is very sick and he wants to stay closer to Arkansas. That means Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, etc. Not FSU.
  • Andrus Peat- One of the more intriguing players in this class. Although at first glance you question why a kid from Arizona with a brother at Nebraska would go to FSU, there is some interest here. Peat's grandparents surprisingly live in Tallahassee. FSU still isn't the favorite to get Peat, that's probably Nebraska, but it's not impossible for Peat to be a Nole come signing day. And there is no question that FSU would take him if he wants in. 1/4/12 update: Corey Long of ESPN.com is reporting he plans to visit FSU the weekend of January 20th.
  • Jameis Winston- is a Nole. There's no talk of him switching to hometown Alabama. There's no visits scheduled to Florida State yet (that are known of), but there are none to Alabama either. No need to worry about this point.

Official Visits

1/13/2011

2013 DT Caleb Brantley

My Dad runs a PAL league up in Palm Coast, so he’s around a lot of the athlete’s in the area. He told me this weekend that one of the DTs from Crescent City is telling everyone he got offered from FSU and wants to play there next year. His name is Caleb Brantley. I don’t know much about him although my Dad has watched him in person and says he’s a beast. One of his high school coaches is Pooh Bear Williams and I know Brantley camped at FSU last year. Here’s an article I found on ESPN about him:

DT Caleb Brantley, Crescent City (Crescent City, Fla.)
Although the 2011 season hasn’t been very good to Crescent City High, currently sitting at 1-6, the same can’t be said for their interior stalwart defensive tackle Caleb Brantley. Brantley, a 6-3, 295 pounder, has been a load for all of Crescent City’s opponents, and has been very productive, despite playing for a team with six losses.

"I am averaging over nine tackles a game," Brantley shared Wednesday. "Most of the teams we play like to run the ball, so I don’t get a chance to pass rush as much as I’d like. But when I do, you can count on me getting in the backfield. Despite our record, our defense rarely gets scored on."

Brantley holds an early offer from Florida State, but he told ESPNHS that he expects his recruitment to pick up once he gets his film out.

"Everyone is waiting to see how I play. I come off the ball hard, I never give up much ground, and I have a real nose for the ball. I’ve been working to improve my strength in the weight room. If I keep working like I do, I know I can be the best in the state."

He had impressive showing last spring at both the Orlando Nike Combine, where he made the all-combine team and posted an 84.24 SPARQ Rating on the strength of a 42-foot power ball toss, and also at the Florida State Nike Camp.

It means

While Agholor likes FSU, and FSU is in his top 5, he likes UF and USC a little better than FSU.. as in they would be a top 3 cut while FSU would probably not be.

I guess another way to put this would be, Nelson Agholor likes the University of Florida and the University of Southern California better than he likes Florida State University.

That’s just by default and doesn’t say anything about recruiting prowess. I guess the point is: top shelf prospects will not be flocking to UM due to sanctions. They will always get a few 4* from their backyard but it’s not like they are filling their class with them.

Good thing for us, we just happened to beat the team Darby was committed to in the bowl game and he played with a lot of FSU bound commits in the UA game.

I take it you like Pender?

He is a beast and might just be the top RB in this class. That kid from Texas is special too though. That said, I think Pender is more of a Homerun threat than Johnathan Gray. I like BSJ’s shiftiness and Gray can grind it out but Pender imo is a threat to break a long one every time he gets a touch

Totally different body types

Freeman is more of a somewhat squatty Ray Rice type with thicker lower half while Pender is more taller and more streamlined. Registers as a Lamar Miller clone almost

Pender really could be the complete package that FSU really has never had in a RB. He is not undersized like most of our great RB’s have been, he is lighting quick and fast, and he is built well. To me he reminds of Clinton Portis alot when he came out of HS, only a little bit stronger.

Except for being screwed by the SEC reffing crew in the UF game and some fumbles with the Dolphins (which doesn’t count) he was the complete package. I believe that Greg Allen was a pretty fair running back too. Oh, and Amp Lee.

Vision

It’s something you have or you don’t. You can become a more patient runner when pressing the hole and allow blocks to set up, but vision that is a natural thing. Seeing a cut back lane before it even develops that is something the great ones are born with.

I respect you and westcoastnolefan's opinion

But I disagree with you guys on this to an extent. I’ve talked to running backs that have been tabbed as having poor vision early in their career, but later ran with better vision because “the game slowed down” to them. I do think vision is more of a natural thing, but it is something that can develop also. Will the coaches (and fans) have to patience to see if it develops for Wilder? Seems unlikely on the fans part based on comments, but the coaches may.

by 504Nole on Jan 10, 2012 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

have *the patience

by 504Nole on Jan 10, 2012 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think vision can improve incrementally with enough reps (Reps help with patience)

the game can gradually slow down for a back and they can simply respond to “color” once they get the ball (They can either run away from it or run over it depending on the size/skillset of the back). Thing is JWJ just never struck me as being a good fit for a zone blocking one cut type of system. He’s more of downhill power-type runner in the Larry Johnson or Brandon Jacobs mold as opposed to an agile back back with true one cut agility (Shady McCoy, Lamichael James types). Not meaning to stereotype backs due to the height and weight so I’ll point out that there are bigger backs who could perform well as one cut runners as well (Arian Foster and Columbus HS RB Brandon Radcliffe). Thats probably a bigger worry with me in regards to JWJ than the vision aspect, to be honest

Basing your class around it is not a great idea. With recruiting services being what they are it’s harder and harder to under rate players. It’s not like in the “olden” days when there was only one or two places you could go to get recruiting information. It’s big business now.

by SarasotaSeminole on Jan 10, 2012 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

My guess is no.

That’s purely speculation, but the evidence seems to point in that direction. He suffered the concussion almost a month before the regular season. You have to figure that the decision to redshirt him wouldn’t have been made until at least week five or six, at which point it would make sense for him to use a shirt on him rather than use him for > half a season. At that point its obviously a very serious issue, and the fact that he was never even able to come back and practice with the team, he obviously was still feeling the effets during bowl practices. That’s a very bad sign IMO..

In one of the post-practice interviews with Jimbo during bowl practice, he said that Haulstead was fully recovered and fully participating in practice. He also said (and I am paraphrasing) that it was pointless for him to burn the redshirt for one bowl game.

by SolidNole on Jan 10, 2012 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

If I thought Peat would come in and play immediately maybe.

If we don’t get Darby, then my top want would be Howard.

by Nole2005 on Jan 11, 2012 6:14 AM EST up reply actions

Biggest need right now for this class is at LB.

By order of position considering the guys in play, I’d say:
DT – Goldman
CB – Darby/Howard/Blake
LB – Northrup/Clemons
RB – Davis?
OL – Latu, Peat, Watson

If you just consider positions, then our needs are:
LB (thinnest depth on the team)
OL (simply b/c we don’t have any freshmen in this class yet)
RB (second thinnest depth on the team)
TE (Since Court was talking about potential flip to Cal and all we have left are Tye and NOL)

They need him, class rankings-wise.

On Comcast Sports South last night they spent a little time discussing how incredibly poorly Nebraska’s recruiting is this cycle. This is largely due to a small class, but also due to poor quality, so far. I have a hard time believing they won’t pull some folks in at the last minute, beginning with Peat and including at least some 3-star-ers, to improve their position. They’re still walking down the ballroom steps to join the dance in the Big 10 and that’s got to be exciting, though that Pelini seems like a loose one…

by Bud Elliott on Jan 11, 2012 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, you're right.

I just went to look at the class and ESPN ratings and it looks like a typical Nebraska class, miniature version. Perhaps all they were saying was that it’s small. Weird, though, that they featured on the show 3 teams that were notably kicking butt by their standards and 3 that were sucking fumes by theirs. NU was one of the ailing ones. Hmmm.

by SolidNole on Jan 11, 2012 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

And IMO if UF really did lead why didnt he publicly come out and say so after his Dec. 9th offical visit and He is visiting Fsu when basically the whole class is coming in (Friday the 13th,ironically ) so there will be a positive vibe that will be hard to say no to.

MEJ

Not everyone has to be J. Pierre Paul. MEJ first step isn’t top tier but it ain’t to shabby either. It is rare to find a kid that size who is that athletic. We will probably trim some of that bad weight off of him within a year, which will help with his quickness, and he will still have a nasty bull rush and very good moves/technique. He just looked a little heavy at the UA game. Does anyone here doubt that Vic will have him in the best possible condition? I doubt that.

Hope this is true.

Reminds me of an interview I heard from one of our players (sorry, can’t remember now who it was) back in the late 90s in pre-game coverage in which he told the story of the recruiting cycle that he was a part of in which a large chunk of the players in the FL/GA all star game got together and decided not to go to different places, but to concentrate their talent to try to win the big one. According to him, a large number of them had an informal meeting in one of their hotel rooms to decide which of the Big 3 they would all commit to. Seem to recall it was like four or five of them that did. Kills the story that I don’t have names, but I swear on the 50 yard line that I saw and heard it. Seems this is a similarly perfect storm. If only…

If I had to pick one from this list for next year it would have to be Terrance Smith with Tyler Hunter running a close second. Both will have opportunity as CB and LB are a tad thin on the two deep next year and both were guys I really liked coming out of HS more so than some of the other guys on the list.

by ONOLE05 on Jan 11, 2012 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

Nothing but a hunch here...

I’d go with Terrance Smith and Tyler Hunter. I think Smith will be a monster on special teams next year and get some reps at LB. I could see Hunter being. our 3rd corner over Waisome next year.

I think most Gator fans are silly, especially the ones on ESPN.

Alligator Army guys are the exception.

But…. if I have to be serious, I’d say Alabama finishes #1 hands down.

UF has a solid class, and there might be a chance… but I don’t think there are enough bodies left on the board that they are in line for that could push them over.

Agholor and Howard being the obvious pickups, but that still only gives them 10 ESPNU 150s. You guys are chilling at 12 currently with room for more.

Im not sold on Texas' class this year or any other.

If all these Texas classes were that good, they would have more than 1 title in the last 60 years. I think many of their recruits may be 4* players in the Republic of Texas, but 2* or 3* when compard to the rest of the country. Not trying to imply that UT doesn’t bring in many talented players, or that Texas as a state doesn’t produce tons of D1 talent. Just think that half of their recruits become 4* players the day they committ to UT, which is usually before the end of their junior years in HS.

Agree to an extent. Its more about Mack Brown and his staff (which he’s changed) wasting talent.

Im not sold on Texas’ class this year

Disagree. This class is miles better than the last 2 or 3.

Their classes have always been at least above average. They didn’t recruit a good RB between Jamaal Charles and last years #1 RB Malcolm Brown. Nor did they recruit a good QB between Vince Young and Garrett Gilbert. Colt McCoy was never supposed to be the guy (obviously ended up being good) in that cycle, Ryan Perilloux was but was gobbled up by Jimbo at LSU. And Garrett Gilbert may have set them back 3 or 4 years (not necessarily Mack’s fault but should shoulder some of that blame for not having a backup plan).

Texas also had a run of dubious hires (HCs & position coaches)… They “thought” they were getting Saban before Saban when they hired John Mackovic (Button down, process-oriented all business guy) and it was a horrific fit.

Being HC at Texas is a much about the football as it is the culture. I think Bama is too, but I also think they were so desperate at that point … They didnt care Saban wasn’t “touchy feely”

Love the use of "touchy feely" in the same sentence as Saban.

I totally concede UT's class looks REALLY good this year.

But I pretty much always feel that way around signing day about UT. Obviously they are lacking in coaching talent/player development as you and FSU mentioned above.

Regardless of the reasons for it, I think they are trending down as a program and will probably continue that way on the field until there is positive change at the top. See also: FSU 2001-2008.

by Widespread Seminole on Jan 11, 2012 8:41 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

No doubt. Definitely had that “lost decade” feel over there the last two years, but unfortunately for those of us that hate the shorthorns, Mack cut ties with his staff before it was too late (Manny Diaz is awesome). With that being said Bobby never had a 5-7 season like Mack did when things started going south.

Their wish list is

Diggs, NA, Howard, Hamilton, JHC, and Young. Those are the most talked about. Now that Jenkins is UGA bound, Fowler’s name is being brought up again. I’m hoping it stops at the first two, which seem obvious right now, and they miss on the rest.

Really trying not to get too excited, but if we land Goldman...I mean...

We are going to be absolutely stupid up front on defense. Like…if I weren’t an FSU fan, I’d be angry about what Jimbo Fisher has built on the d-line in two years.

Jernigan? McDaniel? E-Dawk? Cam Erving? Young blood like Lawrence-Stample…and what about 4 star Derrick Mitchell? Haven’t heard from him in awhile.

We’ve already got Shanks and Stuckey coming in. But Goldman too? It really doesn’t seem fair.

Not sure I agree. They will definitely try to put Texas at #1 but there aren’t many more guys that are gonna end up signing with Texas. Interesting. I personally wouldn’t because Alabama’s class would still be better, but I think it’d be a 50/50 call with the edge going to the school that ESPN is in bed with (Texas). I think adding DGB would get them to #1 (20%).

Assuming EJ gets his head straight...our BCS Championship hopes are almost entirely pinned to how the young OLs mature.

And even then…you have to assume the margin is somewhat wide, relatively speaking. Does a C+/B- offensive line get us there?

Without excellent field position, scoring on FSU is going to be quite difficult in 2012. Forget about running the ball. Like, don’t even consider it.

When going in the first round its because of what you are doing at that position. You dont take a first rounder generally hoping he can play anther position. He is maybe 10 lbs away from being just fine with his size in the NFL for a DE

There have definitely been times that this has happened

Alex Gordon, a one sport athlete said he wanted to go to Nebraska even though he was a potential first round draft pick out of high school, so no one wasted their pick.

But in baseball, if the team doesn’t sign the pick they get it back for next year’s draft. Therefore if there isn’t an immediate need for a particular draft there is little lost.

that would be a logical statement given the fact we two (bammers, and FSU) are the only two possibly in line for his services.

Good point for sure.

I wouldn’t say I follow him directly, but rather whatever recruiting material is posted. While it’s all football recruiting news, you still have to notice that he recently appears to favor playing football. That may all change of course once baseball season kicks in, given that the pinnacle of excitement in high school football just occurred. State finals, senior year, qb competitions, elite exhibition games, etc. I’d definitely be amped to play more football after all that!

Baseball's rules are.

Either going after high school or have to wait till 3rd year of eligibility for MLB draft. I think JUCO’s can go at anytime though

All I want for NSD is Eddie Goldman...

by DA-2 on Jan 11, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

this is correct

has to wait 3 years after HS or can go JUCO and leave after year 1

by fsugrad06 on Jan 11, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Not exactly.

It is 3 years in most cases, but the rule actually is that the player is eligible to be drafted when he turns 21. For some players that is 2 years into college.

As DA said, JUCO baseball players can be drafted at any time.

I could be wrong about the exact rule, but I know there is a rule in place

Says something like if you don’t go right out of high school you have to wait until after I think their Junior year to enter the draft. I could be wrong but I’m rather positive he has to wait a few years if he doesn’t go this year

I don't see a two sport athlete passing Coker

who I have very high expectations for. By the time hos redshirt freshman year rolls around, we’ll have an entrenched starter. He’ll never fully particip in Spring football and I’ll guess he leaves for MLB 3 years in.

I could see this happening except for the entrenched part.

I just hope that other players in this class want to come play with Winston so that helps with recruiting. Also good to have Winston as a back up to Coker in case of injury or if Coker just doesn’t work out. Competition is important though. Coker will have to keep beating out Winston as long as Winston is here.

Recruiting Guys (Bud, Michael, DA, NT&T etc.)

Very curious to see your thoughts on the final Scout rankings. Never been a huge fan of Scout for football (too many 5 *s and they seem to be the ones that agree least with the other services). Couple things really surprised me at first glance though:

Winston #41 in the country?
Goldman #31?

Too low: Johnathan Gray, Duke Johnson, Eddie Goldman, Jameis Winston, Tracy Howard, TJ Yeldon (how is he that low?), Kent Taylor, Marcuss Eligwe (really?), Justin Shanks, Max Tuerk.

Times in the 100m out of HS that would help FSU

Are in the 10.40-10.45 range. They then have to get down to 10.20-10.25 to really help FSU on the natioanal level.
Yes 10.55 for guys Darby and Williams are really really good but not elite. FB players in college can slow down due to the weight gain.

Bracy's speed is so elite .....

He could improve upon it just by getting stronger, working on his form etc.
He could slow down if he puts on too much football bulk type weight, or if he doesn’t practice track much (things like starts, form). Obviously we have to hope he stays injury free.

My guess is that does pretty well in FB, but in the spring focuses on track and is a superstar in that. 9.9 guy in college

Nobody else seems to be so confident as it was never posted on here and there has been no speak of him on campus. Also per DA-2, Pender was “allegedly” going to be on campus today, but still no word of that either. The Pender thing or lack thereof gets weirder by the day.

If anything Karlos's time will translate better because he will only be carrying about 8% of his body weight in pads

While Bracy, carry the same pads (roughly 20lb), will be carrying about 30% more (closer to 12%) relative to Karlos.

This means that Karlos’s speed in pads will be much closer to his actual speed, while normal players lose a decent amount. This is why big guys with this type of speed are both rare and extremely coveted.

I understand Clemons is going to visit FSU but why if FSU is not in the running for his services? Valdosta is not far from Tallahassee why visit something close to home?
My comment is nothing solid but some friends at KSU who know people at UN say FSU has a real shot at Peat. I understand that is pretty thin but maybe? Just looking for some mo right now leading into signing day. Peat would be big MO

Recruiting, what a wild ride

Getting a free trip to a place you have been many times seems a little odd. Maybe the staff can turn Clemons in our favor. I do not think the staff would let him come if they thought he would hurt us.

Peat has everything pointing him to Nebraska but I can understand why he would like to visit. Free trip to see the Grandparents and a chance to see beautiful Florida. Maybe the staff can show him the sites around Tally and some pictures of all that snow in Nebraska. Regarding the three MD prospects on your board

Eddie Goldman, Ronald Darby, and Stefon Diggs…

I think Goldman will either go to Alabama or Florida State. I do not which one is leading. I have heard different things about Ronald Darby from different websites. One site is saying he wants to go to college away from home, the other saying he is still looking at UMD. One thing that both UMD sites are saying is that he says he wants to take all five visits. I think hes used three (Notre Dame, UMD, and Auburn), which leaves him two left. FSU is getting one, will be interesting who gets teh second. That may help determine his two leaders. Stefon Diggs is high on the Florida Gators. I would say Florida in the lead. If he doesn’t end up in Florida, then I think Maryland is the next most likely to land him. Maryland has already pulled two four stars out of his HS in Mike Madaras and Wes Brown and made some moves that I referred to in another thread to strengthened their relationship with that high school.

if a kid is proactively tweeting about FSU on the night bama wins the natl championship, i would say he’s pretty solid. plus, saban wont let him play baseball, even if he did, bama’s baseball program is far inferior to FSUs. I would also say that I don’t see him contributing because Coker will beat him out for playing time.

Also word is that it doesn’t matter if Coker is better, Winston will see plenty of time as a true freshman, and that has been part of his recruitment.

With Murray State being the only patsy

I do not see enough clean-up duty time to make sure Winston would get plenty of PT. What are you going to do? Play him on special teams or let him hold for D-Hop?

Jimbo doesn’t play around with the QBs. We don’t have the luxury of blowing out enough teams to give plenty of PT to the 4th string QB. Maybe Winston gets time on the practice squad?

Maryland cut its track program, correct? No shot at Darby then. IMO.

Tomahawk Nation Nole-Holds-Barred Analysis of FSU Sports!

by Bud Elliott on Jan 12, 2012 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

Maryland did cut its track program

I think that hurts them a lot with Darby. There is some debate on whether Darby is considering UMD at all. One site that I go thinks UMD is still in there battling, probably not the favorite, but still battling. The other UMD site I go to says no real shot at Darby. The site that says UMD is still in it is saying FSU and LSU are the leaders for Darby. LSU, kind of like FSU, just recently got involved in his recruitment. So maybe those are the leaders for Darby.

Diggs is hard to read cause he so positive about multiple schools. Gator fans think he is a strong lean to Florida cause he is very positive about their school, but just a few days earlier, people at UMD sites thought they were in a good spot based on positive things he said about UMD. He is a little charismatic and has a lot of enthusiasm. Because he has a lot of enthusiasm though it makes him a little tougher to read because you cannot tell if he really likes a school or is just being himself. That said I think Florida is up there and leading. I think UMD is in there trailing. And I think Diggs has other schools in play, but I am not even sure which ones.

by philibu on Jan 12, 2012 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

This

I literally just got back from a conversation with someone close to MD’s recruiting. He said basically exactly what you said here. He mentioned they think they still have a shot with Darby, regardless of the track program, but he said he still thinks he goes elsewhere. He is optimistic with Diggs, but not sure. He was much more confident for a while about Wes Brown because of some behind the scenes things. Regarding Goldman, he mentioned that UMD still has an outside shot because Goldman’ s hs teammate, Albert Reid, just switched his commitment from WVU to UMD, but he also thinks Goldman is headed to Bama or FSU. He just thinks UMD has a better shot now. I will tell you all this.. Locksley is doing WORK in the DMV… It will be much tougher to get kids from this area moving forward…

by newdynastynole on Jan 12, 2012 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

PS

Goldman is huge for us in more ways than one. His teammate, Jalen Tabor (class of 2014) could be a top 5 recruit for that year. I do not know if they will play together in college, but I am sure it wouldnt hurt his recruitment…

Goldman

One of the Terp boards is saying Goldman will likely end up at Florida State and that he is tired of the recruiting process at this point. Sounds like a big time pickup for FSU.

We already do. Based on Rivals:

USC #1 in star rank with 3.92 avg star. This is with 0 P/K.

FSU is #2 with 3.80 including kickers. After removing Beatty and Aguayo, who are top prospects but underrated as with all specialists, FSU has an average star rating of 4.00

Yes. 4.00. 2×5, 9×4, 2×3. 4.00 average stars.

It looks like there are some kinks that need to be worked out. For example, Jameis Winston has a 97 rating but is ranked as the 4th best player in the nation, still. It looks like the ratings have been updated, but not the rankings. A quick examination reveals Marvin Bracy has made a really big jump (from a 92 to 95). Eligwe has made a lil jump up, too.

In the sense that 247 sees him as an absolute can’t miss at DT, but only almost that good at DE? Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to seeing that big of an athlete on the edge, but actually how good could he be at DT? Perhaps a similar issue to another one that has been endlessly debated on TN: JWJ = RB or LB. Is MEJ a 95 DE (which is awesome), but a 100 at DT?

every school pursuing Goldman has similar reasons. We're pointing to latest info

He and Odell have always had a good relationship. One of our recruits and him always said they wanted to play together, etc. Other sites have pointed a couple recent things that sound like FSU.

Every school has their reasons they think they land him. IMO it’s all about Bama and FSU, and if anyone has any edge at all, it’d be FSU for stuff I’ve seen on paysites.

by jmnpb996 on Jan 12, 2012 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

Well I for one think Goldman is a 4-3 DT

which would make the obvious choice FSU over BAMA

by Nole300 on Jan 12, 2012 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

TBH Goldman is a crap shoot

It will either be Bama or FSU that is the only given. The best explanation I have read is FSU would be is dream school and Bama would be a very logical choice that no one would argue. Outside of the Bama insiders a large number of people feel FSU holds a 51/49 type lead. I get the feeling he will choose FSU for the same reason UF had that sick DL recruiting class a couple years ago, sometimes when that balls starts rolling and kids want to play with other great kids it ends up turning into a fun ride for the fans.

by Burghnole36 on Jan 12, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed about being a 4-3 DT

He could be an elite 3-4 NT if we works his but off and gains a ton of good weight. Or he could be a 4-3 DT/NG and be elite the moment he steps on campus.

No one hears about NTs for the right reasons (Haynesworth), but everyone knows guys like Suh, Fairly, Raji, and Sapp (one of my favorites).

Did you here Goldman’s comments on not wanting to be compared to anyone and specifically Marcell Dareus? Normally i wouldn’t put much stock into what he said but it was the way it was worded that kinda made me feel like he went out of his way to say that he doesnt want to be compared to anyone and that he is his own (unique) player. Just didn’t sound all that warm and fuzzy when it came to Alabama even though he obviously has serious interest in bama. IMO i don’t even think he really knows where he is going yet.

I believe the question was how is signing and placing using a scholarship?

If he goes the JUCO route, I don’t think that is on FSU’s dime, correct? Theoretically could you not sign a class of 50 and s&p 30 of them? I too am kind of fuzzy on the whole deal, so any clarification would be appreciated.

What NTT is saying is by Leggett committing here he would be taking a spot of someone else who could potentially qualify. No scholarship would actually have to be burned on him if he committed to FSU and ended up at a JUCO
