Tomahawk Nation Podcast: FSU 2012 Recruiting Class Edition
"Ingram Smith and Bud Elliott take a look back at what was another exceptional class for Florida State. Bud and I review the events of yesterday, looking at both the highs and lows for the Seminoles.
Florida State still awaits the LOI from QB Jameis Winston, but from all indications this is another elite recruiting class for Jimbo Fisher and Florida State. We talk about the expectations that comes with a string of three highly rated classes. Bud and I also took some time to discuss what, if anything, it meant that FSU's class consisted of so many out of state prospects.
As always we would encourage you to subscribe to the podcast on itunes, by searching for Tomahawk Nation in the itunes store."

if you compress it down to like 64kbps or lower
that will cut the file size substantially. You don’t need audiophile quality for a podcast.

I believe you converted to MP3
and put it up on a file sharing site

Classic.
2011 winner of the DocHoliday2 MS Paint/Photoshop Award. So I've got that going for me.
Mmm no. But i think there needs to be additional considerations talked about in addition to socioeconomics… Perhaps some thing that would be too long to do in a podcast segment

I didn’t think this would come up today and it took me a LONG time to articulate what I meant.
“The more the kid realizes that school is equally as important as football, the more the coach loses some control. "
i agree fsu
we had multiple tech problems during the course of the podcast that slowed things down a lot and i had to promised a station in tennessee i would join their morning show to talk ’crootin – i found this topic very interesting and will see if we cant revisit, when we arent nearly as pressed for time

I would like to hear opinions that take it one step further...
Is there a different mentality for guys who were taken out of (what I could only assume were harsh) neighborhoods and given an opportunity to play in a private high school program? Are the guys out of St Thomas Aquinas different then the guys in their area who went to a public high schools?
My curiosity is mainly sparked by my recent following of Lamarcus Joyner. Is he the most polished guy in the world? No, but he seems so focused and dedicated to the process of the coaching staff. Both his and Rashad Greene’s comments duing the post bowl game press conference were very interesting. They sounded like clones. Obviously, you hope that players buy into the coaching staff’s philosophy. However, I was really surprised at how in sync those two players were.

It's not just the kid's perspective.
It’s the culture of his hometown and everyone around him. The South is still local oriented. Protecting your neighbors and your communities against outsiders is still a common feeling even 150 years after the Civil War. It’s a matter of local and regional pride that’s played out now on the football field rather than the battlefield, but the mentiality is still somewhat there. Football is very important in the South even for kids who aren’t planning on making it their liveihood. On the west coast, sports are just recreation.

As my father says...
Florida is the only state in country where the more south you go, the more north it gets. Keep that in mind ;)

Most of the guys that come from St. Thomas are one of two guys:
A) Home Grown: like Andrew Datko and Jake Rudock. These guys are both products of years of football in Weston, one of the most affluent neighborhoods of Broward County, and then another four years of football at one of the more preeminent programs in the country. Neither of these boys were on scholarship. Their families paid their way and their academics reflected their athletic talents. Perhaps even surpassed them. Datko was an Academic All-American coming out of high school and I’m sure Jake Rudock was somewhere close to that. Ryan Becker, if you’ll remember the walk-on QB for us, played at STA and received offers to play at such universities as UPenn.
2) Students who transfer: this includes our standouts like Lamarcus Joyner and Bobby Hart. Guys like LJ were VASTLY different from the players who had been in the program from the beginning of their time in HS. As I’ve mentioned before, LJ even asked what exactly the “glutes” were during a session with a pilates instructor during summer workouts, and all of the kids who went through a biology class at STA already laughed. However, the thing that Lamarcus did better than anybody else was WORK. He worked harder than anybody else, he worked longer than anybody else, he appreciated the opportunity that he had at St. Thomas and listened to Coach Smith and earned his #1 CB ranking coming out of HS.
Bobby Hart’s another one. He was a lot more lazy and soft than LJ. The coaches did not like him nearly as much as LJ, who they fawned over (again, this is because LJ was the complete package and didn’t know when to quit whereas Hart felt entitled already [keep in mind, he was 15 when he was playing for STA Varsity, though]) however he learned how to play his position from a coach with a LOT of success at the high school level and whose philosophy for the position group that he coaches is incredibly sound. In fact, there are very few high school coaches who have had success on the OL like Coach Connelly at STA has had. Besides Bobby Hart and Austin Barron (whose talents we saw on the field this year after not even having a spring camp under their belts) he’s sent numerous guys to college to play OL. The name you’d probably be familiar with the most after Bobby Hart would be that Sam Young who also received a lot of notoriety for starting at ND as a freshman or Dan Wenger who joined Sam Young on ND’s OL. That was only a few cycles before Bobby left STA, too.
I guess despite the differences in where the players come from, coming out of STA sort of reduces the affect of whatever outside influences would have over its players. The coaches are top-notch and demand 6 days of work per week, every week for most of the year. Discipline comes with that. The facilities the kids have access to are also simply unbelievable.
When you have all of these coaches who have won multiple national championships screaming in your ear six days a week breaking down film with you and hitting the weight room with you, and when you work out in a multi-million dollar athletic facility and play on a field that Michael Irvin bought the school, in a stadium that was named after Brian Picolo… you feel real pressure and you want to be the best.
Coming from all of that, college isn’t that big of a deal. STA is probably as close as you can get to a college-style program in high school. It’s like the Notre Dame of HS ball.. except that STA wins championships still.
Am I the meanest? Am I the prettiest? Am I the baddest mofo low down around this town? Well who am I? Who am I?

Thanks again guys
another great hour.
I hope you’re right on who contributes early, but I hope their contribution is a little more positive than Krug’s was last year. I also hope Krug continues to improve…..
hey Bud
How about posting the podcasts in the Zune Marketplace for those with windows phone like myself? Any possibility of that? Thanks in advance.
Saw Peter Warrick play once. The rest is history...
i actually think Stanford is better than Harvard
not from a perception standpoint, but from a few people know know who have talked about their experiences with each of them.
Wow
I had no idea Chad Kelly had a rap video. That was awesome. Didn’t he initially want to go to FSU until the staff showed no interest? I thought I saw a comment referring to that on TN. After listening to the video, I totally understand why. LMFAO. His tweets to the Clemson backcup were also classy.
Great podcast… caught the podcast on my way to work this AM. Looking forward to the next one.
PS Not all “northerners” have douche rap videos.
