Should also not have the"I" in there, “guys, guess who I saw at the mall.”

Regardless, at some point I imagine he’ll just tell us…

by Noles44 on Feb 2, 2012 9:48 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Let’s agree to never mention JG’s name on this site again. I’m still trying to figure out how to get the dagger out of my heart from that game in the late 90s when we gave up a 60 or so yard bomb to him to blow a sure-fire win in the swamp with under, what?, two minutes left. I think we were ranked number 1 at the time!

by SolidNole on Feb 2, 2012 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

You think?!?

It was 1997 and we were on our way to the National Championship when Spurrier pulled that Noah Brindise/Jesse Palmer switch the QB after every play strategy. It was 3rd and long and we were in man coverage on an island. Fred Taylor punched it in two plays later and I have yet to receive my just revenge for that. Take away that play and we play in 5 straight National Championships from ‘96-’00.

by LilburnNole on Feb 2, 2012 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

It seems as surreal in my memory today as it did that night. It was painful, but also just flat out bizarre that we weren’t covering dep. I think I undershot the yardage, too. I seem to recall they were deep in their end, at least the 20, so it may have been a 70 yard gain…

Dexter "Gangsta Flea" Jackson

I had the intense displeasure of attending a game at Shanks HS in Quincy while he was playing there. It was their homecoming, 1994, and I was in the band at Pace HS. I remember this because the announcer announced it after every single thing. He also gave players direction on the field. “Dexter Gangsta Flea Jackson under center. Drops back, rolls right, oh look out Flea, there’s Pace boys all over that way! Go the other way! Oh, he’s goin the other way, nobody’s over there, touchdown Shanks! Touchdown, at Homecomin, Ninety-Four!”

I wish I was making that up.

Lincoln HS has been steering kids away from FSU for a long time. They got their nose out of joint when they were expecting FSU to take some of their "lesser" players

in order to get the “Blue Chippers” simply because FSU was the local (home) team. When FSU finally got tired of their strong arm tactics the Lincoln kids started being encouraged to go elsewhere. Now that JG is the HC I dont expect it to get any better. Think about all the Lincoln kids that were super highly rated that turned out to be busts. FSU put that HS on the map and lots of their kids were getting way way overrated simply from the success FSU had there.

by JaxJagNole on Feb 2, 2012 9:49 PM EST reply actions

Golson is a real solid four-star prospect on the O-line.

DT Marquedius Bain has great size, but people feel that his competition is suspect? (not sure)

Sojourn Shelton is interesting because FSU jumped on him before others during camp this past summer. He is a smaller CB at 5’9, 160 lbs but has been lighting it up in camps. OSU and UF apparently are going to come after him.

I count 17 seniors on scholarship and 3 early draft entries in Rhodes, C Jones, and Werner for at least 20. But does anyone know how many spots we carried over from this last cycle?

Some article on ESPN.com

just has him rattling off a list of favorites, and while Alabama is surely there, so are we. UF, joy of joys, is not. Nor was any other ACC school IIRC.

Given that we just stole three for three in head to head matchups with Bama, I’d say we have a chance.

If I came across something on another free site, and it was totally ridiculous, could I post a link to it here?

I just want to be sure so I don’t get in any trouble.
It is a list another site put together of this years class of High School QBs.
They have broken them down into 6 different categories: Top 10, Sleepers, Overrated, All or Nothing, Highest Floor, and Most Likely to be #1 Pick.
They have 1 kid in the "Top Ten, Overrated, and Most Likely to be #1 Pick"
They have another kid in the "Top Ten, Overrated, All or Nothing, and Highest Floor"
How could you be in categories that completely contradict each other, and they were put together be the same people. This is also just a small taste of the stupidity I have found over there. I would be glad to post a link, if I am given the Green Light.

Solid Nole and Jerseynole

The point we are trying to make is not that the program stayed at dynasty level until the end. It went a ways south under Coach’s last few years. He should own that. But there is a difference in staying too long and wrecking the program.
His contributions to FSU are uniquely significant in all of college football. The up greatly overwhelms the down.
In addition, Coach Bowden is a better man than he was a coach. He was the face of our Seminole family for decades. I was always proud that he was ours and grateful that he did so doggone much for our school. He makes us all proud and brothers and sisters, he does NOT deserve the over-the-top, sometimes vicious criticism that he gets on TN quite frequently. Before you continue to throw dung at Coach Bowden, YOU contribute one tenth as much as he did. When that happens, you’ll earn respect. Until then, know that your spoiled, narcissistic and arrogant opinions bring discredit upon us all!

I actually liked this post for the first 90% despite not agreeing with any of it. The last 10%, however, made you seem delusional and happy to live in ignorant bliss.

I’m not a fan of sentimentality and that may be the problem that many people have with the Bowden issue. Many members here use the term objective, which I feel applies to the views on Bobby, but I think the more appropriate word may be non-sentimental. If that is viewed as “what have you done for me lately”, fine. I accept that is my line of thinking. The difference between the events at FSU and say Tenn with Phil Fulmer (only other situation I could recall where a long term successful coach was fired for on-field performance) is Bowden was given 5 years to correct the program. Fulmer had 2 down years and was out. Where else has a coach but allowed to stay at an institution that long to turn it around after sustained past success? I believe that 5 years proved the program was not going to turn around, and rather just continue to tread water.

For everything Bobby stood for as a person, it had no bearing on wins and losses on the field towards the end. Press conferences that showed an inability to remember important details just highlighted the lack of leadership the football program had at the time. As a fan, I personally always felt like a kid who has a brother that doesn’t shower. Everyone notices but you just pray it never gets brought up.

For a once proud program, the last few years of Bowden era was anything but sweet. I have trouble understanding how anyone can disagree with this if looked at objectively or without the sentimentality.

If you couldnt agree with any of my post

But you liked it anyway. . And you suggest I’m delusional?
That speaks for itself.
As for living in ignorant bliss, I’d take the first part sometimes if I could have the last part.
I think you are missing the point here. No one is in denial about the last few Bowden years or that he should have left 5 or so yrs earlier. The point I’m making has to do with recognizing the overall impact he made and showing the man the respect he deserves.
And, the article you linked to is reflective of his decline.
That doesn’t change the fact that we all stand on the shoulders of the great men and women of old. Shame on us if we, as a society, show our former heroes no respect.
I’m no longer the man I once was either. Thank God and my terrific family that they still treat this old man with love and respect.
It’s much easier to understand respect for our past heroes when one is past ones heroics.

It was well worded and presented.

There is no problem with recognizing a well thought out response, whether in agreement or not.

I understand your point about standing on the shoulders of past men, etc. I saw it and lived it everyday while I was in the Navy. Those heroes that I worked for had their time come to an end as well and not all of them left the service of their own accord. It happens in all walks of life, but that doesn’t mean we forget their impact despite their decaying ability to lead at the end. With that said, it didn’t stop us from discussing the issues that resulted within our command due directly to their poor leadership.

Their is no lack of respect from being truthful about the matter. Bobby stayed past the time in which he should have. No one in any capacity should have job security indefinitely, regardless of what they have achieved.

Lastly, I agree with this statement completely:

As for living in ignorant bliss, I’d take the first part sometimes if I could have the last part.

FSU football had some history...
If you are one of those who mistakenly believes that FSU football was nothing before he got here

But it wasn’t much…two bowl wins EVER. Like 5 wins the previous 3 years including an 0-11 season. There was talk of scrubbing the whole program. Where the program was when he took over compared to where it is when he left…HUGE difference even with the crappy decade.

Now back to recruiting…

"Peterson is the one who can be credited with putting Florida State on the national map"

The facts speak for themselves.

According to Florida State’s 2008 football media guide, “Florida State’s arrival on the national map occurred during Peterson’s eleven seasons as head coach.” While at FSU, Peterson would be recognized for his offensive innovations as well as a number of significant firsts for that fledging football program. Peterson became the first Seminole coach to beat the University of Florida, a 16–7 win at Doak Campbell Stadium. Peterson also coached the Seminoles to their first win ever at Florida Field. Under Peterson, Fred Biletnikoff would become the Seminoles first All-American. Peterson also recruited the Seminoles first black football players, including J.T. Thomas, the first black to ever play varsity football at FSU. In recognition of his many accomplishments at Florida State, “H” style goal posts were added to the field at Doak Campbell Stadium in 2002 and have been named, “Pete’s Posts”.

“(Peterson) also developed a high level of discipline on and off the field and an unusual number of pro quarterbacks. His wide-open passing offense was the antithesis of what most SEC and southern teams did and his forward thinking schemes were frequently copied by NFL coaches. Peterson is the one who can be credited with putting Florida State on the national map. He recruited from the talent-rich areas of Pennsylvania (Fred Biletnikoff) and Ohio (Steve Tensi) as Florida, unlike today, had a smaller population and a limited high school talent base. He brought in three-platoon football mimicking the famous "Chinese Bandits" teams he used as an assistant at LSU and gave them the designations of the “Chiefs”, “Renegades”, and “War Party”. Despite the wide-open attack, the LSU influence was obvious and he built his early teams upon a smothering defense. He later augmented this with one of the first truly innovative passing offenses that brought visiting coaches from every corner of the country. He came up with the concept of the “hot receiver”, never before seen, to counter blitzes, and FSU became known as an Independent primed to upset any team at any time."1

Bowden put FSU on the map. The facts do speak for themselves, though football was an exciting event under Peterson..

From the FSU profile page: "For 11 seasons from 1960-1979, Bill Peterson was the head football coach at Florida State…Under ‘Coach Pete’s’ direction FSU football became an exciting event. His teams compiled a record of 62-42-11, a winning percentage of .587. While “Coach Pete” led the Seminoles, FSU made four bowl appearances."

Peterson had cruddy athletic facilities and support, but whatever the reasons, FSU was not on the map nationally until Bowden showed up.

The "event" quote is from FSU itself...

However, if you equate these facts with being on the map, then Peterson put FSU on the map. App State, Fresno State, Utah, etc, etc are all On the Map teams thanks to high profile occurrences in their programs over the past decade or so. No one takes them seriously. That’s the point here. I will leave this to you to respond and then I’m moving on.

Don't recall

App State or Fresno ever doing anything commensurate with Peterson’s body of work. I agree with you on Utah. I take them seriously now, never did before. Maybe they are on the map.

Where you made your best argument is with Etc. and Etc. I have no rebuttal for them and the fact that you could name them so quickly establish how common and trivial Bill Peterson’s accomplishments were.

Two things -

1. I don’t think we take a class similar to that of Miami’s in that we will not just give of schollies to low 3 star players just because we have them. I think we take a large class but not to the effect 34, 35 – unless we are just reeling the GAMs.

2. Where do we stand with QBs Kevin Olsen and Johnathan McCray? Are they comparable in talent. Do we have a shot at landing either? I remember reading articles about them a few months back. TIA

Read about this

Urban didn’t realize it but the cultures of the SEC & B1G are different:

  • Oversigning: Meyer has already been called into Delaney’s (B1G commish) office and told Meyer that he needs to cut 3 guys from his roster ASAP.
  • No recruiting (flipping) prized/top recruits committed to other B1G programs, which Meyer did.
  • Other: Academics matter; many B1G programs don’t allow visits after committing, etc.

Meyer has been put on notice by Delaney…and reminded that his team is still serving a NCAA penalty, followed by probation. Urban better tread lightly….

You prefer the dirty recruiting we do in the SouthEast?

What’s wrong with the Big 10 having a little class in the way they compete with one another? Why do we seem to be siding with Mr. YouGotToHaveFaith?
Oscar Myer is scum and we’re knocking Bielma?

Go figure.

by fmnole on Feb 4, 2012 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

Bielma is and always will be a douche

Starting from the day his team took a whooping and was quoted saying they aren’t ready for Big Boy Wisconsin football.

Then he complains about someone having class while dropping 80 on conference foes with his starters in to the end and going for two late. If thats class then Urban was just elevated to the golden child of mother nature.

Its not classy to stop recruiting once a kid is verbally committed. Its stupid and a quitters attitude. I want my coach not happy with the fact a really good kid is committed somewhere else. I want him to bring in the best quality kids he can and do what needs to be done to accomplish that.

I agree to an extent..

but Urban “joined a club” and to the extent he broke their internal code, Bielma had a right to complain. I don’t think double standards of that sort are without precedent.

Apparently, before Meyer, the Big 10 WAS a demilitarized zone of sorts.

Deeper insight: no way I am ever going to side with Oscar. :-)

Dogs bark in the night but the caravan moves on.

by fmnole on Feb 4, 2012 9:19 AM EST up reply actions

Hoke was actively recruiting OSU recruits before (and after) Meyer was hired.

The demilitarized zone was already gone when he took the job. He just whipped out his guns right away instead of whining like Bielema, who already got thrown under the bus by his own AD.

I am looking forward to beating UF down again this year.

I don’t see them taking the state of Florida. In fact, I could EASILY be wrong about this but, with A) the way things have been shaping up in terms of our recruiting and the maturation of our team, 2) the prospects for our future [we appear to have quality coaches/recruiters], D) the most important factor being the time bomb that is Muschamp, I would not be surprised if we pull off a 7-3 or 8-2 run against Florida over the next decade. Again, might be wrong by putting that cart so far out in front of the horse, but the times have that feel to me.

by SolidNole on Feb 3, 2012 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

It's way too far out to make any reasonable guesses at this, but at the rate things are going

I expect Jimbo to start out 4-1 against them. 6-4 over 10 years is more than reasonable, better if Muschamp doesn’t work out.

Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.

by AMFKNole on Feb 3, 2012 11:32 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

That’s 2-3 over the second half decade. Does not seem to follow should we start out 4-1. Anyway, too early to say. I will stick with my original point that I would not be surprised if we pulled off a run of wins, a la 7-3 or 8-2.

by SolidNole on Feb 3, 2012 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Well that's three years away.

Basically I just assumed we split the home games from here on out. Tough to predict a much better record against a team that recruits the way they do, has the resources they have and the homefield advantage they have. But like I said, if Muschamp is a bust, could easily be better, perhaps 8-2.

by SolidNole on Feb 4, 2012 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

He's right with that statement

Citing that UF will beat FSU because they return 18 starters (so does FSU) and they recruited well (FSU recruited better) doesn’t quite make sense. Making the claim that FSU will roll UF again this year really isn’t going to get many views though.

by evenflow58 on Feb 6, 2012 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

I get his point though. He’s sort of in “show me mode” after riding with FSU the last 2 years.

It goes back to the we drop a game we shouldn’t (UVA, WF, etc) statement over the last years because we are more talented. Sort of like people going “Clemson will eventually Clemson themselves…” because it’s happened. Dropping a rivalry game late in the year…meh… Mild upset to me and within the realm of possibility.

But we’ll see where FSU is at.

by FSU on Feb 6, 2012 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

More like he’s being lazy and taking the cliched, cop-out path instead of actually realizing what caused the “collapses” that burnt him. And how did FSU let him down in 2010?

He also said that UF would be the “dominant” team in Florida, not solely predicting an upset. And I think that losing at home to UF after where each program is at right now would qualify as more than a mild upset.

a fair question

and Andre Ware is an idiot. I’m not going to concede defeat this far out, but obviously the offense will need to improve dramatically for Florida to dominate anything. The defense on the other hand, should be very good.

2013 coaching staff and recruiting

i’m going to assume that FSU is going to lose some coaches after this season, regardless of the 2012 record. a BCS game/win on their resume will only increase their price tag.

who are the most likely to leave? and what impact will their departure have on 2013 recruiting? i think everyone but odell is a possibility to move on.

knowing jimbo, he’s already got the second wave of coaches ready to contact. i think the staff would be open and give him early warning. i would hope that they leave immediately after the season, and for smaller schools far away from tallahassee. worst-case would be what auburn went through this offseason.

it’s a good sign that other teams want to give coaches on our staff a promotion. just need to manage the transition. this is a crucial recruiting cycle — lots of names to replace.

Clemson is his leader in this stage of his recruitment. He’s the 3 prospect in Georgia this year, His tape is just plain crazy for a dude of his size. He’s height and weight are “6-4” 280.

If we’re talking about recruit hype, Derrick Brooks was about as hyped a recruit as one could find. Can look at the same class for a player just about as hyped that didn’t work out – Marquette Smith. Scott Bentley made the cover of SI before playing a game, so could make an argument for him in a way. Dan Kendra was super hyped as a recruit. Could argue for Randy Moss although it was less as a recruit than when he was in his redshirt year and became a campus legend with talk about how he was performing in practice.

I remember hearing a crazy story from the Brooks recruitment

Back then, the primary way for addicted recruitniks to get their fix on NSD was to call The Osceola’s 900 number. It was updated every hour with the new commits and Brooks was scheduled to commit at 2PM. One issue… he was announcing CST. The Osceola received their largest call volume to date during the 2PM hour, and then an even bigger volume during the 3PM hour after everyone realized the error.

Do you think Green is a better RB or ATH at this point

Green has great top end speed and acceleration. It also seems like he has good hands out of the backfield. The one thing I want to see that I don’t get the opportunity through his video is to see his between tackle running. His highlight video seems like he is always making plays that bounce to the outside. When you watch Bryant’s video you see his vision and feet working. Obviously every runner has a certain style and skill that they bring to the game. I like what Green offers but I’m interested to see what he does between the tackles.

by aznole85 on Feb 6, 2012 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

Green’s video offers no clues as to his in-line running ability. Thats probably due to the level of competition he plays currently. He has the change of direction and cutting ability to excel in a zone blocking system. Would just like to get a better idea of his vision and ability to set up his blocks. Pender improved alot in this area in 2011

because he can cover. From most reports he was the second best cover guy in the one on one portion of the event (The best there being Vernon Hargreaves III the best corner in the country IMO). I like judging kids when footballs are actually flying. His wingspan can compensate a bit for his lack of size as it will allow him to generate more PBU’s than your average ‘smaller’ corner. I think this kid breaks up the pass to Floyd in the Champs Sports Bowl if he has as good of body positioning as Reid who played that pass perfectly

I also looked at his picture and he needs to hit the gym. If he were in better looking physical shape and posted these numbers I would be more concerned. He is a ball player for sure.

Might not be FSU material. If he begins to grow, watch out! I personally like his ability and play. He is undersized though. Not a take for any of FSU, UF, or UM this early in the game. If he gets an offer it will be later in his senior year. That said, i like him. Don’t see him at FSU or UF. Maybe USF or UM (we know they love low 3* with potential). Might get some Big ten offers. Yes FIU is an option. He is the best high school player on the field 95% of the time, that does not translate to best college prospect on the field though.. sorry for rambling…

Not Will Jr

I’m from palm beach county Will too old to be my son unless I started at 6. Lol I’m a fan of this kid and also a fan of Greg Bryant because I saw both live and think they are great talent but I see we feel like other kids are better. Shelton is 5’8 but I don’t hear the same thing about him. I hear everyone saying Ryan Green is the best RB in this class but his team lost 5 games or more and don’t really play no one but the only thing Bryant did was lead his team to a State Championship and killed every team he played. I hope we land both of them honestly

by Seminoles561 on Feb 8, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

I haven't really heard anyone say Green is better than Bryant.

IMO

Green is indeed better than Bryant. Bryant is a good back but not elite. And side from that Green is better fit for FSU’s ZBS than is Bryant as well from what I have seen from both backs on tape (As Woodley is a better fit than Turman). But the Green vs Bryant argument has been festering pretty early this cycle I’ve noticed

by westcoastnolefan on Feb 9, 2012 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I'd have Turman over Woodley

Green, Bryant, Turman is what I’m hoping for in this class. Doubt we can swing all 3 though.

by nolesblogger on Feb 9, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Doesn't surprise me

Turman is a big back with good straight line speed but is more of a downhill bruiser who’s not an ideal fit for a ZBS IMO. Woodley has much better footwork and cutting ability, but most simply don’t ‘get it’ with the kid. I like Bryant, but most are under the impression that the kid is elite when IMO thats simply not the case

Barton Simmons from 247sports said this about Will Likely from the 7 on 7 in South Florida
Will Likely, CB, Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central
Likely was one of the top performers in the state last fall regardless of classification. The four-star was the Palm Beach County Player of the Year and the Gatorade Player of the Year in the stat of Florida. On Sunday he was playing cornerback and showed why he is so highly regarded despite his size. Likely closes extremely quickly on the football and has phenomenal instincts as a cornerback.

by Bud Elliott on Feb 9, 2012 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

A. I understand he wants a bigger front 7. I have read all(or at least most) of the articles posted on TN discussing the importance of size.
2. The fact remains we pursued DF heavily for a very long time. If Fisher didn’t think a WDE was important, we wouldn’t have put so much effort into him.
D. Not once did I mention anything regarding size. I said it is my opinion that we need an elite WDE in this coming class. While run stoppers are critical, a pass rushing specialist is also very important to a defense. Right now we have 1(hopefully)in Casher on this roster. In order to rotate, as you and Fisher have extolled the importance of many times, we need more than Casher moving forward. We have 0 proven DE in 2013 if Werner leaves for the draft.
Gold. I have been a posting member since September 2010. Not sure how that is considered “new”, but I have been an avid TN reader since November 2009.

I will be dissapointed if we are not a top 3 on NSD

If we can take close to 30 this year. I expect us to be up there. We were 3 with less then 20 commits. So with this years class no reason for not being top 3. If we arent it means we whiffed a lot and took a ton of fillers. We dont do that anymore. Some 3 stars are inevetable with that many, and 90% in 12 is just amazing. But if less the half are not 4 or 5* then we settled a lot. Take a bigger class in 14 if we whiff after needs. But if UM gets respect just for signing that many. We better be up top or I will be upset.
