A look into one possible future that will change NCAA history...

I have developed a system in which NCAA football would be changed forever...

Please when reading this idea to keep an open mind. I hope you enjoy it...

As the spring games are important for viewing the talent of the upcoming, another aid in this is exhibition games...
  • 2nd week in AUG - FCS opponent
  • 3rd week in AUG - FCS opponent/bye
  • 4th week in AUG - FCS opponent/bye

- Student athletes would be required as a part of their scholarship/admittance onto the team to come to school early to participate in the preseason games.

- Each team will play two FCS teams, one bye per exhibition season per team

- By using FCS opponents, it guarantees a warming up against inferior schools and less of a chance for 'dropping' out of the regular season schedule for a 'shock loss'.

- Treated almost like NFL preseason, to go through the depth charts to ensure where they need to be.

- Fans who normally don't like to travel or don't under other mitigating circumstances could opt-out of these games with no moral obligation to attend.

- Reduced-admission price as exhibition games.

- Evening games as well (Fri night, Sat night)

Regular Season (Conference schedule <9>, 2 OOC, and annual game)

  • 1st week Sept
  • 2nd week Sept
  • 3rd Week Sept
  • 4th week Sept
  • 1st week Oct
  • 2nd week Oct
  • 3rd week Oct
  • 4th week Oct
  • 1st week Nov
  • 2nd week Nov
  • 3rd week Nov
  • 4th week Nov Bye Thanksgiving holiday etc
  • 1st week Dec Annual game

- Every team has a equal amount of time without byes.

- ACC for example will have 9 team rotation for conference play. 2 more OOC teams will be permitted for 11 game schedule.

- Annual game -

  • will ensure that these remarkable 'rival games' will be in the schedule, but not relevant to the polls.
  • Think sweeps week for the networks/full participation from the fans
  • Home and home locked in forever...

Post season: Tournament/Playoffs

  • 2nd week Dec (Friday night) Regionals: Top 40 minus AQ schools in 8 non-BCS bowls)

- AQ teams are conference leading team; have automatic seed to the tournament championship game

- 4 teams at each bowl for tournament.

- Top teams of each conference are the top seeds so they play the second part of the tournament. At large bids for the top 32 after the top seeds will be determined by rankings, etc.

- First two teams play, then second teams play, the winning teams play for the tournament championship game against the AQ teams.

- Points are TD 2 pts, FG 1 pt. Basically rules are OT rules with slight deviation. Instead of winning after other team doesn't meet score, play swaps between teams. Score is tallied until one team receives 15 points or 1 hr running clock (except for time-outs) - if OT for a tie or tiebreaker, the kicker is the game winner. Each team will set the kicking unit on 30 and try kick. If makes, the other kicker must make. Keep moving back 5 yards until someone misses.

  • 2nd week Dec (Saturday night; Regional Finals; winners vs AQ schools in 8 different bowls)

- Two hours of playtime with same rules as above, points raised to 35.

  • 4th week Dec (before Xmas until before 28th) (top 8 schools in 4 different BCS bowls) Quarter-finals

- Regular Game rules

  • 1 Jan (top 4 schools in 2 different BCS bowls) Semi-finals

- Regular Game rules

  • 2nd Sat Jan National Championship (BCS bowl)

Now you are surely saying, 'Robb that is 14 games BEFORE the playoffs? Won't the players be tired? Isn't that a too much college football? It seems too complex...'

Well maybe it is too complex for the NCAA...and maybe it will be taxing on the athlete to build up the stamina and reduce injuries...

but I think the system I have envisioned has promise and potential...there are bye weeks specifically embedded for the safety of the tired athletes. The tournament/playoffs are strategically created to not only give a fair chance to the unlucky teams who have a couple losses but provide fans with a venue they can travel to and see quite a few teams playing in a 4 hour span.

Also, just imagine the monetary prospects for a second...a complete diving in Scrooge McDuck's vault of riches should be how the bowls/conferences/networks/schools are thinking. This throws money around everywhere
and no one is unhappy...

Would this appeal to you?

As a disclaimer:

I would not want to see a loss to Miami. However this was put in place to show that even with one loss it is possible to be the ACC leader.

I do not take responsibility if any of the above matchups and/or scores are identical to the outcome; the purely coincidental rule applies

This is merely a thought for IMHO a better atmosphere for college football, nothing more...
