A question was posed on the latest recruting thread (2013) but it was about MEJ (2012) and asked if he is the "best" recruit FSU has ever had.
The responses, to some degree, morphed into the "best" player FSU ever had but if we want to compare MEJ to them, we'll have to wait 3 or 4 years before that comparison can take place.
If we look at the most "hyped" recruits then we can start to compare MEJ with other FSU recruits of years gone by.
It's difficult, if not impossible, to go past 1990 in looking at this since recruiting rankings and hype are a thing of the last 20 to 25 years or so. The Ron Simmons of the world didn't have the opportunity to sit in front of a national tv audience and choose from among three hats.
But I digress.
IMHO, three of the most "hyped" recruits for FSU had disappointing careers here. At least when compared to the hype. I hope MEJ doesn't become number four.
Lorenzo Booker was the 2002 National Gatorade player of the year.
He also made the top 10 most hyped player list.
Travis Minor was the 1997 National Gatorade player of the year.
Marquette Smith was the 1991 National Gatorade player of the year.
FSU fans can hardly remember these guys now but, when they inked on the bottom line with FSU, many celebrated and had visions of two-time All Americans running through their heads.
Just food for thought.

Couple of others for FSU.

Xavier Lee…beat Alabama
Joe Mauer…never showed up.
Danny Kanell…did pretty good.
Dan Kendra…ruined by a knee injury
Tommy Polley…came in highly ranked in FB and BB
Myron Rolle…solid career
Yohance Buchanon…nothing but attitude
Dominic Robinson…slow DB turned slow receiver
Dishon Platt…recruiting rumor mill legend

FWIW Kendra problem wasn't the knee injury

He was dumb as a stump, that is really what ruined him.

by seminolecpa on Feb 5, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Intelligence aside, Kendra was in line to be the next starter when he blew out his knee in the '98 spring game.

It opened the door for Weinke and FSU never looked back. Until the injury happened, lots of folks were stoked to see Kendra in action.

Do you remember when he blew out his eye?

Almost that is. Guy was a dumbell (no pun intended) legend.
I think he did like half a ton on the squat machine. IIRC, that’s how he broke some blood vessels in one eye.

by law74 on Feb 5, 2012 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

that's gotta be worth a quick poll

worth blowing out an eye just to say you squatted half a ton? :)

by StM on Feb 6, 2012 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

Yep, did an 1100lb leg press and then walked around campus for the next week or so with bloodshot eyes.

Don’t forget the pet alligator and the explosive chemistry experiment.

Those were good times.

I was at FSU the same time as Kendra and had the chance to be around him

a few times. Dude had the personality of a serial killer. He was very odd.

Gonoles

I remember that now. He was from a different planet. I can imagine if he’d been around in the early 70’s.
I wonder what became of him?

by law74 on Feb 6, 2012 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Don't know.

I read awhile back he attempted the SEALs but dropped out of the training according to some posts on Spec Ops-related message boards.

by gonoles74 on Feb 6, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

One of the things that I thought hurt Kendra

in football and maybe the SEALs was his bodybuilding mania.
I feel guys that pump iron to the extreme hurt themselves athletically.
They sacrifice agility, mobility, speed and flexibility. May look good (in some people’s eyes) but they can’t fight, run, swim or jump.

by law74 on Feb 6, 2012 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking this too

Even before the knee injury, he didn’t look like a quarterback anymore

thanks for linking this. I’m normally not a big fan of bleacher report articles/opinions, but this was an enjoyable read.

I actually thought most of our highly recruited players

lately that didnt pan out had much more to do with our coaches not developing or knowing how to use them. Leon Washington and Booker are both pros and we had them both in our backfield at the same time and couldnt produce. I also hope JWJ pans out because, though he wasnt the #1 player he definitely had #1 hype coming out.

by cerebralfish on Feb 6, 2012 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

the hype on JWJ

was fueled a lot by the assumption he’d eventually moved to LB.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Feb 7, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I hope he isn't a wasted scholarship.

I’d rather have him as a good and productive LB than a seldom utilized, situational RB. I’m not saying he won’t win the Heisman in two years and put up 1,200 yards and 25 TDs, I’m just saying I’d rather have the guy play where he best fits.

warren and kendra

warren was usa today defensive player of the year — didnt even play in the nfl.

same for kendra (usa today off. POY // no nfl). kendra doesn’t even have a wikipedia entry.

What Jimbo could have done with Lorenzo Booker

Guy on a Buffalo

by SteadfastNole on Feb 5, 2012 12:44 PM EST reply actions

Or even Travis Minor...

Solid, dependable, played well in most of the big games.

by NavyNole94 on Feb 5, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I agree

I always like Minor. Played well in big games, great hands, ripped off that run on 4th and inches in the 99NTG. The hype was way to much for that young man to live up to, epsically following Dunn

#58 should be retired in honor of the most destructive force to ever wear garnet and gold

by Wire2Wire99Grad on Feb 5, 2012 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, but Minor wasn’t completely failed by the coaching staff.

If he had Vic, Gran & Jimbo, I believe he could have lived up to his hype. Don’t think he would have remained strictly a RB, think his career would have looked a lot like his final game against UCLA

Callahan Bright and Dishon Platt...mythical hype

….Yohance Buchanon? The cant miss that wasnt even close…….Dominic Robinson too….BUT he did catch that 4th down and ridonkulous-to-go from Rix that led to Rix-toPK Sam on the next play in Gainesville

by BigSpearDiplomacy on Feb 5, 2012 1:08 PM EST reply actions

IMHO

I think next year will have a recruit (if he stays healthy) that exceeds the hype of Clowney.
Robert Nkemdichi, a 270 lb. DE that also plays RB for his Grayson, Georgia team.
This freak rushed for 17 td’s last year. Can you imagine a 6’5" RB that weighs 270?
He’s as fast as most RB’s with a 4.56 forty.
He also racked up 18 sacks while playing both ways.
In the recent past, ESPN has given a 95 to Clowney, a 95 to DaQuan Bowers, a 93 to Matt Barkley and a 91 to MEJ.
Nkemdichi will be a 96 minimum.

You better be careful linking bleacher report articles

Lol

I’ll keep that in mind.
I would have thought Warchant would have been public enemy #1.

And who was the DB out of colorado?

Think he did a recruiting diary with USA today. He had a good amount of hype.

by Sabon on Feb 5, 2012 2:43 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Yes. That's him.

Who was the Colorado recruit (not Bentley).

by Sabon on Feb 6, 2012 9:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

No, that was Tex Colorado, the Arizona Assassin.

USA Today players of the year

Defense…..A Cromartie, L Green and D Brooks
Offense….. T Minor, M Smith and D Kendra

FSU has had more than its share of hyped recruits.
All contributed but most never lived up to the hype.
D Brooks did in a big way.

Lamarcus Joyner

was Defensive Player of the Year

Proud author of Tomahawknation's most rec'd post ever

by newdynastynole on Feb 6, 2012 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

That list not having Ronald Curry on it is a glaring omission

Ronald Curry was much, much more hyped than many people on that list. I think that author is 23 or something.

by LouC on Feb 7, 2012 11:34 AM EST reply actions

Rix was pretty highly touted.

I don’t know what his star rating was, but I remember him being a pretty big deal. I always liked him and thought he needed better coaching. I think he could have been pretty special under Richt or Jimbo.
