ACC and Academics

I have a major question - why do we care about being associated with the ACC for Academics?

I listened to the podcast (twice) and I'm left wondering about staying in the ACC for Academics. Why does this matter? I do not understand the argument that being in the ACC enhances academics. I currently live in Chicago and have been told that the Big Ten Conference has research incentives. For example, OSU and Wisconsin would work together on a major research project. I have never heard of FSU working with any other ACC school on a research project. Is there something I am missing? Are grant recipients based on conference?

Also, consider the fact that UF (in the SEC) has had a major stride in rankings the past couple of years. In terms of rankings, all that matters is MONEY and FACILITIES (US NEWS).
