Ryan Green
Ryan Green, a top running back recruit, committed to Florida State Friday night after finishing his visit to Tallahassee for the Jimbo Fisher Camp. Green stars for St. Petersburg (Fla.) Catholic.
How good is Ryan Green? Have a look at his accolades. He is a consensus four-star recruit and holds offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, USC, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. Ultimately, he chose FSU over Notre Dame and Florida.
The move wasn't entirely surprising, as I asked Green on Wednesday if he planned to commit. He smiled and said "whenever I feel comfortable. I don't have a timetable."
I usually try to shy away from commenting on a recruit's character, but Green seems like a very good kid and his mom and dad keep his head on straight. They're a very nice family and not the nightmare parents that you sometimes encounter while covering recruits. They're certainly on board with the decision:
"He decided when we were leaving camp,'' said Vader Green, his father and a former standout player at St. Petersburg. "He said, 'Dad, I want to do it. FSU has always been at the top of my list.'"It was definitely nervewracking trying to distinguish who's being truthful and who has your son's best interests at heart. That's the hardest part. But at the end of the day, it's his decision, and he has to be comfortable with where he's going.''
Green stands 5'10 and weighs in at 190 pounds. That's significantly bigger than he was as a sophomore or junior, and having seen the bigger Green several times, I can verify that he moves quite well with the new muscle.
It's that movement that makes Green a special player. You'll see it in the highlight film later in the article. He's very fast, but what really makes him a special back is his acceleration. He has a good first step, but with his second step he created this phenomenal burst that you really have to see to believe. Green also doesn't waste a lot of time dancing. He gets upfield in a hurry. Green is also a true weapon in the passing game.
If there are questions about Green's game, they would be about his ability to run between the tackles (not a ton of film here) and his ability to pick up extra yards after initial contact. The new strength should help him some here.
Green is a legitimate national recruit and is very much in the conversation when discussing the top backs in a loaded state of Florida.
Green was quite complimentary of Tallahassee recently:
The 5'10, 190 pound running back has been to Tallahassee more times than he can count. "Oh man, I don't even know. A bunch of times. I love it up here," Green said when asked about his previous trips to Florida State.
One of the main draws for Green to Florida State is coach Eddie Gran. "Coach Gran is like a second father figure. I love his spirituality and that he doesn't use profanity. I can trust him and he is about coaching." Green couldn't point to one thing he impressed Coach Gran with. "Everything. I've gotten better in all areas," Green said.
What will it take for Green to commit to a school? "The right fit. It has to feel right. The academics have to be right. Florida State has shown me that. And Notre Dame has shown me that too. I just have to feel comfortable," said Green, who is looking to study Zoology, Biology or Communications.
Friend of TN Josh Newberg of Noles247 has known Green and his family for years, so I was quite interested to get his thoughts on the commitment.

As an aside, St. Pete Catholic is a private school and it can surely afford an HD camera. Please SPC?
