I've been reading a lot of post that shows a concern about our DE recruiting this year and the state of the position leading into 2013 year. So it made me wonder how big of a need is it? Should FSU recruit based on the need of the postion even if we don't believe in or don't seem like a fit in the current system or the future system( with Mark Stoops potentially leaving? And why can't FSU get the elite DE's this year?
Well lets examine these questions first why no big DE commitments yet? (This is all speculation of course) I think recruits know and understand that there going to be a shake up on the FSU defensive staff, and are all wondering where will Coach Elliot end when this happens. Defensive End recruits and current players all rave about coach Elliot coaching abilities and the uncertainty definitely has to play apart in recruiting of other big time DE. I also believe that Jimbo does like multiple type or hybrid players on defense not just guys who can just put there hand in the dirt but also DE who can rush standing up. Currently FSU is primarily a 4-3 but we seen some mix of 3-4 lately in that scheme, and it wouldn't surprise me if Jimbo plans to become more of a 60-40 balance of those two schemes, but you have to have the players for that. With DLine recruiting in the last two years you can play more 3-4. FSU can play guys like Timmy Jerrigan,Eddie Goldman, Niles Lawerance-Stample, Justin Shanks to name a few who can rush the passer as well as the run in a 3-4. I also think it would help us upgrade out linebacker recruiting, considering that now if you play linebacker at FSU there's only one playmaking linebacker, in a 3-4 there could be more of a opportunity for play-making at the postion while in that defense if implemented more at FSU. Jimbo is a Saban disciple would not completely surprise if we became more of a 3-4 on defense in the coming years. Also Jimbo has said several times that he want recruit base off need, only players who fit his system and fit in with the culture. I believe in Jimbo ability to build a football team so Trust The Process. I like the group we bring back in 2013 even if Werner decides to leave for the draft because of the athlete we have at the D-Line, some of those guys can play some DE to take some of those snaps to give relief to Mario, Casher, and Newberry, especially on obvious run downs. Do we really need defensive ends? Yea but they need to be multiple, hybrid, elite players, not guys that can't compete with what we got or take up a scholarships.
