Florida State took to the practice fields Tuesday morning after having the day off Monday. And Jimbo Fisher was not very happy with what he saw. Those who have followed Fisher for the last two years expected that Fisher was due to use the media to send a message to his team via some unhappy comments. Today was that day (see the video below).
- Fisher said that the team was soft today on both sides of the ball, and not as fresh as he'd like given that they are coming off a day of rest.
- Fisher said that Terrence Brooks, who wore a blue non-contact jersey, had been wearing the jersey since the full pads had come on. This was a surprise as others had not previously noticed this. Hmm. Fisher said Brooks holds the starting job because of his consistency. He said thought was given to moving Brooks to corner in the wake of Greg Reid's dismissal, given that Karlos Williams is behind him, but stressed that safety is much tougher to learn and that the calls there. We've stressed how important safeties are in Mark Stoops' defense. Fisher did note that Brooks has the ability to play corner if needed.
- No update on the Nick Waisome/Ronald Darby battle to replace Greg Reid at field corner.
- CB Keelin Smith was limited, but did return to practice as expected. He tweaked a knee last week.
- Fisher said all the backs will get carries this year, as running backs get banged up.
- Fisher said the team is more physical and running the ball better this year compared to last season (today's closed practice excepted, apparently), and that the team seems to run more smoothly.
- Offensive Line Notes: Fisher again raved about Cameron Erving, who switched from defensive tackle to left tackle this offseason. He also said that he was "pleased" with the progress Daniel Glauser has made from spring to fall at right tackle, and that Menelik Watson is also doing some good things. Our intel says to take the praise of those two with a grain of salt. However, it should be noted that the team seems comfortable enough with the pair to slide Bryan Stork over to center for the last five practices. Fisher praised Stork. Fisher explicitly said that only Glauser and Watson are battling for the job, which jives with Bobby Hart being the backup left tackle. I have questions about Hart's ability to actually play left tackle should push come to shove, and suspect that FSU would slide over either Glauser or Watson should Erving go down. Is the 17-year old Hart headed for a redshirt? It's probably too early to tell. Fisher later said Hart is also getting some looks at right tackle, and that he is "in the mix." Read into that what you will.
- This is a good looking left guard!
- Fisher praised James Wilder Jr. He's been more consistent with the little things and is being physical.
- Fisher said the team did not adjust well to the hot morning.
- Marvin Bracy is not taking reps as his hamstring pull will likely take another week to heal.
- The team will practice Tuesday night, Wednesday and will scrimmage Thursday.
