Florida State, ranked third in the Coaches and Harris Polls, came out No. 2 in the initial BCS standings, released Sunday. The Seminoles are barely ahead of Oregon, with a margin of just .003 separating the two schools.
Florida State is ahead due to the computer numbers, which heavily favor Florida State thanks to the Seminoles' schedule. Oregon has yet to play a ranked team, but will face Stanford and UCLA in the coming weeks. FSU has Miami coming up in two weeks. It will be interesting to see if FSU can hold on to its narrow margin should all three teams remain undefeated.
"I thought we'd be around third, maybe fourth at the lowest, but I knew we'd have a shot, you never know," Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said.
Fisher said that he would talk to the team about the ranking, since they would hear about it anyway, but that it was important to remain focused and to control things they can control. Fisher believes the maturity and leadership of his Seminoles team will help them through.
"It's an abberation, Reece, a mirage," BCS Expert Brad Edwards said. "It's not going to hold up, if you look at the remaining schedules for the two teams. Oregon has three ranked opponents left, while Florida State has only one. In fact, every team left on Oregon's schedule has a winning record."
Edwards says Oregon will easily pass Florida State by the end of the regular season in the computers, and in order for Florida State to pass them in the overall, the Seminoles would need to pass Oregon in the polls -- in which the Ducks currently have a huge lead.
