Florida State football film review: Clemson 3rd quarter

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Clemson? Did the result have more to do with FSU playing well or the opponent playing poorly, or luck? Read to find out.

Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

Garbage time started after FSU went up 41-7.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

And this takes forever for our staff to put together, so please do share it on facebook and tweet it liberally.

Down/Distance Yard Formation Result Analysis (Jimbo notes included where appropriate
PINION kickoff 65 yards to the FS0, WHITFIELD, K. return 43 yards to the FS43 (PINION), PENALTY CU personal foul 15 yards to the CU42, 1st and 10, FS ball on CU42. Commentators said that Clemson needed to gain momentum out of half. Then this return happened before a successful drive. Amazingly, it appears that 7 could've had 6 if he had decided to shake a kicker instead of truck him. If Eligwe had blocked this man, may have been 6! Facemask on Clemson only makes it worse.
1-10 at Cu42 21 bunch WINSTON, J. pass incomplete to GREENE, R. (ROBINSON). 21 bunch right. 80 has one on one to boundary left. Great protection, 5 man rush picked up perfectly. Benjamin was open on the bunch, but 80 had the good matchup and Winston throws high. Better throw this quick out is an easy first down or more.
2-10 at Cu42 21 I FREEMAN, D. rush for loss of 2 yards to the CU44 (JARRETT). "LSU" quick toss left. Jarrett is hard to reach for Jackson from backside, wins his battle and makes a play. Abram is expecting to make a second level block here, but could have helped considerably cleaning this up.
3-12 at Cu44 11 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to BENJAMIN, K. for 27 yards to the CU17, 1ST DOWN FS (M. JENKINS). Biggest play of the second half. 5 man protection holds up, Erving holds ground vs Beasley's collapse & spin, and Hart does an excellent job pushing Jarrett wide on the outside stunt. Shaw stacks behind Benjamin and both run 15 yard hitches past marker, Benjamin gets the ball, evades a tackle, and gets extra yards. Curl flat well executed.
1-10 at Cu17 21 pony WINSTON, J. pass incomplete to BENJAMIN, K. (CRAWFORD). 21 pony, twin WRs to field, 41/35 to boundary. Pass deflected. Excellent play from Crawford to feign rush, drop to hook and get up to stop a pass.
2-10 at Cu17 11 gun WINSTON, J. pass incomplete to GREENE, R. (BREELAND). Uncalled hold on Clemson. 3x1 to field, back to field side. 35 motions to boundary side, and Noles run rub route. Clemson "beats" this one with bad uncalled defensive holding. Fabric stretched while ball was released.
3-10 at Cu17 10 tight WINSTON, J. pass complete to GREENE, R. for 17 yards to the CU0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 13:33. Just smile on this one, folks. FSU finally called a successful tunnel screen. This is something that has gone haywire for years. Really well blocked by line and receivers, and Greene makes a good play despite poor spacing. It finally happened
AGUAYO, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 34, Clemson 7
Drive: 6 plays, 42 yards, TOP 01:24
AGUAYO, R. kickoff 63 yards to the CU2, S. WATKINS return 12 yards to the CU14 (ELIGWE, U.). Eligwe continues to make his candidacy for the special teams MVP award of the year. Great open field tackle despite being pushed down from behind.
1-10 at Cu14 4-2-5 S. WATKINS rush for 3 yards to the CU17 (JONES, C.). Keepng the edges. Clemson goes empty to boundary and runs Watkins speed sweep to boundary. Better play from 7 makes this a TFL. 26 does a great job keeping his edge and stopping this quick.
2-7 at Cu17 4-2-5 BOYD pass complete to M. WILLIAMS for 17 yards to the CU34, 1ST DOWN CU (WILLIAMS, P.J.). MOFC. Tajh and Williams just make an excellent throw and catch on a back shoulder throw. PJ does an excellent job in coverage. This is just a great throw and catch. 7 will be a really good player for Clemson.
1-10 at Cu34 4-2-5 McDOWELL rush for 8 yards to the CU42 (SMITH, TERR.). Telvin got too aggressive following this and got himself out of position despite having force players outside. Terrance Smith cleans it up.
2-2 at Cu42 4-2-5 McDOWELL rush for 6 yards to the CU48, 1ST DOWN CU (EDWARDS, M.;SMITH, TEL.). Well blocked run by Clemson, 22 and 15 need to do a better job making a 3 yard run instead of a 6 yard run.
1-10 at Cu48 3-35 BOYD pass incomplete to SECKINGER (SMITH, TEL.). Contesting throws. Same personnel as previous down, DL lines up in pass rushing 5-0-5 with 20/7 on edge, 22/24 lined up tight inside, and 31 near edge. 7, 24 and down 3 rush. They get pressure. Telvin is a good offensive play from a pick 6.
2-10 at Cu48 4-2-5 BOYD sacked for loss of 7 yards to the CU41 (JERNIGAN, T.). This is simply textbook form Jernigan. Excellent push pull move tosses Clemson's C in the dirt. This is how you use a man's momentum against him. Jernigan just bullies this poor kid down, gets past him, and does a good job getting his body around Boyd and getting him down. Jernigan is a stud.
3-17 at Cu41 3-2-6 BOYD pass incomplete to HOPPER (BROOKS, T.). Dime in. 3 man rush. Brooks gets in and makes a great play on the ball in the air. Tajh really isn't doing a great job making decisions right now.
4-17 at Cu41 PINION punt 53 yards to the FS6, SHAW, K. return 24 yards to the FS30 (FAJGENBAUM). Kenny catches this ball and starts dancing. Jimbo makes fun of this, saying he doesn't want "dancing with the stars".
Drive: 7 plays, 27 yards, TOP 02:16
1-10 at Fs30 11 singleback WINSTON, J. pass incomplete to GREENE, R. (CRAWFORD). Quick hitch to field side, Crawford makes an excellent play to get his hands up and deflect this ball.
2-10 at Fs30 21 bunch WINSTON, J. pass complete to BENJAMIN, K. for 13 yards to the FS43, 1ST DOWN FS (BLANKS), PENALTY CU personal foul (BREELAND) 15 yards to the CU42,1ST DOWN FS. Fourth read! Jimbo praises Winston here, deservedly so, for getting to his fourth read here. Gets hit while delivering the ball. I don't want to editorialize too much here, but the hit Breeland made here deserved the ejection. It was a clear, flagrant attempt to hit Winston in the head. It's unquestionably dirty. The kid launched off his feet to get up to the height of Winston's head. I don't expect this is the last dirty work we'll see against Winston this year.
Clemson's Bashaud Breeland is ejected for targeting. Well deserved.
1-10 at Cu42 PENALTY FS holding 10 yards to the FS48. Good call. 54 rode the man down into the backfield.
1-20 at Fs48 21 pony WINSTON, J. sacked for loss of 8 yards to the FS40 (READER). This looks like a missed sight from the left. 81 signals it, and runs vertical instead of going behind blitz. Pass pro slides right and picks up every rusher, left side leaves Beasley free, Reader cleans it up. Winston appears to be looking for sight from Shaw. Think this one is on 81.
2-28 at Fs40 10 gun WINSTON, J. sacked for loss of 5 yards to the FS35 (CRAWFORD). Corey Crawford beat Hart here. Gets his outside arm, gets around, Hart has trouble recovering to push him wide. Jameis tries to climb, but Crawford just does a good job bringing him down.
3-33 at Fs35 10 trips FREEMAN, D. rush for no gain to the FS35 (V. BEASLEY). 10 trips left, zone right. Field position run here.
4-33 at Fs35 BEATTY, C. punt 50 yards to the CU15, HUMPHRIES return 45 yards to the FS40 (BEATTY, C.). Good punt from Beatty. Very loose called game hurts the Noles here. Joyner is shoved down from behind hard. You're going to have trouble containing punts when thing like this happen.
Drive: 5 plays, 5 yards, TOP 03:22
1-10 at Fs40 3-3-5 McDOWELL rush for 6 yards to the FS34 (JOYNER, L.). 5-0-5 pass rushing formation with 21 to boundary slants to field, Clemson runs to field. 97 does a poor job keeping outside arm free. 20 does a good job cleaning it up while getting off a man 100+ pounds bigger than him.
2-4 at Fs34 3-3-5 BOYD pass incomplete to SECKINGER. Cover 0 blitz. 2 DBs blitz. 10 gets flats pass to 81 off, it's dropped. Appears to be designed. Clemson can't get out of their own way
3-4 at Fs34 2-3-6 BOYD pass incomplete to M. WILLIAMS. 2 down linemen, 3 LBs and Joyner show pressure. 5 men rush gets pressure, Boyd has to sling it quick. Mike Williams drops a sure first down.
4-4 at Fs34 3-2-6 BOYD pass intercepted by DARBY, R. at the FS22, DARBY, R. return 12 yards to the FS34 (M. WILLIAMS). Noles get pressure with 4 on Clemson rollout to field. Really poor decision from Tajh. I really don't know what he's seeing here. At all. Not a fan of what the Clemson OL does here to Darby, who gets up grabbing his back.
Drive: 4 plays, 6 yards, TOP 00:38
1-10 at Fs34 11 gun WILLIAMS, K. rush for 3 yards to the FS37 (SHUEY). Packaged power/bubble, give to run. Appears it may have been better to keep here. Not sure Jimbo wants 5 keeping at this point in this game, though.
2-7 at Fs37 11 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to O'LEARY, N. for 8 yards to the FS45, 1ST DOWN FS (BLANKS;SHUEY). Quick hitch to O'Leary.
1-10 at Fs45 11 gun WINSTON, J. rush for 3 yards to the FS48 (SHUEY), PENALTY CU personal foul 14 yards to the CU38, 1ST DOWN FS. Winston sees man coverage and takes off. Boundary side defender peels off and gets him early. 9 from Clemson called for bad, bad hands to the face.
1-10 at Cu38 1st and 10.
1-10 at Cu38 11 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to SHAW, K. for 5 yards to the CU33 (R. SMITH;M. JENKINS). Power package read, Winston hits bubble, Shaw's move gets an extra yard or two.
2-5 at Cu33 11 gun WINSTON, J. pass complete to O'LEARY, N. for 27 yards to the CU6, 1ST DOWN FS (ST. ANTHONY). O'Leary makes a great play here. Quick out, and he just demolishes Tally native Travis Blanks. Levels the poor kid. Near leg, near shoulder, lays the boom. Gets himself an extra ten.
1-G at Cu06 21 I FREEMAN, D. rush for 2 yards to the CU4 (SHUEY). Freeman needs to stay wide. If he stays wide on this zone run, could be 6.
2-G at Cu04 22 I WINSTON, J. pass incomplete to O'LEARY, N.. O'leary poor angle on route. If 35 runs this better, possibly a TD on this play action route. Designed for him
3-G at Cu04 10 trips WINSTON, J. rush for 4 yards to the CU0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 04:04. 5 sees everyone covered, makes his own way. An excellent job with a pump fake in space to open himself up a lane.
AGUAYO, R. kick attempt good.
Florida State 41, Clemson 7
Drive: 8 plays, 66 yards, TOP 03:14
AGUAYO, R. kickoff 58 yards to the CU7, S. WATKINS return 12 yards to the CU19 (BROOKS, T.). Great tackle in space from Brooks.
1-10 at Cu19 4-2-5 BOYD pass complete to BRYANT for 11 yards to the CU30, 1ST DOWN CU (RAMSEY, J.). Bryant finds a hole in the zone, Ramsey makes a good tackle in space.
1-10 at Cu30 4-2-5 McDOWELL rush for 3 yards to the CU33 (JONES, C.;MCDANIEL, J.). IZ, Jones is held on backside, 22 slow to get around, but 7 makes the play anyway.
2-7 at Cu33 4-2-5 McDOWELL rush for 15 yards to the CU48, 1ST DOWN CU (RAMSEY, J.). Missed assignment got sealed, Clemson got the edge. Well blocked run. Ramsey maakes another excellent tackle in space.
1-10 at Cu48 3-3-5 BOYD pass complete to McDOWELL for 1 yard to the CU49 (SMITH, TEL.). 5 man rush gets pressure, Tajh checks to flats, Telvin makes a great tackle in space.
2-9 at Cu49 4-1-6 BOYD sacked for loss of 2 yards to the CU47 (JONES, C.). Jones get a free sack here via Jacobbi, who does a good job directing Boyd away from running through open middle of line.
3-11 at Cu47 4-1-6 BOYD rush for 4 yards to the FS49 (ANDREWS, N.), PENALTY CU holding 10 yards to the CU41. Not sure I understand this at all. Clemson is down 34, they choose to run QB draw on 3rd and 11. With a QB who is already hobbled. I really question this from Chad. Why run clearly hurting QB when the game is over? If this isn't held, back is there to prevent Andrews from going anywhere, and it's 4th and short.
3-17 at Cu41 3rd and 17.
3-17 at Cu41 4-1-6 BOYD sacked for loss of 6 yards to the CU35 (ELIGWE, U.). Too much dancing for Fisher's taste. Eligwe rushes past, recovers, gets the sack as Boyd scrambles. Eligwe does the "ooh kill em" dance, much to the chagrin of Jimbo
4-23 at Cu35 PINION punt 37 yards to the FS28, fair catch by SHAW, K., PENALTY CU kick catching interference 15 yards to the FS43, 1st and 10, FS ball on FS43. Shaw drops the ball because of bad interference. Need better awareness from blockers, this could be worse in a bad scenario
Drive: 7 plays, 16 yards, TOP 02:37
1-10 at Fs43 11 gun PENALTY FS false start 5 yards to the FS38. Matias false starts. 5 jumps on them.
1-15 at Fs38 11 gun WILLIAMS, K. rush for 9 yards to the FS47 (KEARSE). Power right, NOL does excellent job sealing, Karlos gets the edge. Well blocked stretch run to the edge.
2-6 at Fs47 11 singlebak FREEMAN, D. rush for 13 yards to the CU40, 1ST DOWN FS (SHUEY;KEARSE). This is excellent. Zone blocked left, NOL makes a great block to seal backside. Freeman cuts back and gets to second level. Dominating them at line
1-10 at Cu40 11 gun FREEMAN, D. rush for 17 yards to the CU23, 1ST DOWN FS (SHUEY), PENALTY CU personal foul (R. SMITH) 11 yards to the CU12, 1ST DOWN FS. Power right, NOL again destroys his man. Jackson again does well in space, easy yards for 8.
1-10 at Cu12 1st and 10.
Drive: 3 plays, 45 yards, TOP 04:05
Florida State 41, Clemson 7
