Did FSU make a mistake in not extending Fisher's contract?

Last season FSU President Barron decided to not extend Fisher's contract one more year, a year that would have driven up the cost of a buyout after 2013. Will it cost FSU?

In terms of keeping Fisher, I really don't think so, but extending Fisher is a must this season and could cost FSU millions. Had they extended FSU after last season, FSU could have tacked on one more year at 2.9 to 3 million dollars, and after this season done as they did after last season - not add a year. Now they have to add two, and possibily renegoiate the whole contract - likely to 3.2 to 3.5 million, adding several million to the lifetime of the contract.

If a USC or Texas comes sniffing, Fisher won't leave in my opinion, but his agent could use the interest to push it closer to $4 million per year. I believe Fisher will stay with the house he's built here, but you can be sure his agent will use the leverage.

Make it to the national title game, and FSU will find a way to afford a larger contract. With a title game appearance, the excitement will loosen donor purse strings, and add in Bowden out on the fundraising circuit for FSU in that environment, and increased licensing fees from re-awakening the dormant FSU T-shirt and other items market that dropped off in the lost decade ...
