The 'Noles pick up a bigger back.
Over the weekend FSU landed a commitment from running back Kamryn Pettway. Pettway stars for Prattville (Ala.) High School, a place that has been both good (Justin Shanks) and bad (Austin Golson) to Florida State in recent recruiting cycles.
Pettway is not yet rated by the major recruiting services, which is no surprise because it is still very early in the 2014 recruiting cycle. His only other offer at this point is from South Alabama. He stands a reported 6'0 and 220 pounds, which is pretty big for a back entering his senior season.
Pettway profiles as a big back who could receive carries on the goal line and potentially also do some blocking.
One issue with recruits from Alabama in recent years is the fear that Alabama or Auburn will flip the recruit if they choose. That's porbably not the case with Pettway, because Alabama almost certainly does not have room because the Tide has eight running backs on scholarship, and because he probably is not a good fit for Auburn's new spread offense.
Pettway's film shows a few good things, but also leaves some questions. As expected in a big back, he lacks the top-end gear. However, his lateral agility was a bit better than I expected, and he does have a few runs with good power, though I had hoped to see him pounding on people a bit more.
FSU is looking to take two or three backs in the class and can afford to be patient here.
Pettway is commitment No. 7 for Florida State, which is tied for second nationally. I fully expect a few of the current commitments to head elsewhere at some point, and many more to come, of course. It is very early in the cycle.
