First let me say congrats to all the Noles that were selected in the first round. Jimbo was a very proud papa this night and well he should have been. I once heard someone say on this site that you can judge the health of your program by the number of guys it puts in the NFL, well Nole Nation, by that metric FSU is doing very very well. Saban's smug facial look was only matched by Fisher's delighted facial look of having THREE Noles in the first round. Can FSU go toe to toe with mighty Bama on the field and on the recruiting trail? The answer is if they can't then they are THAT much away. Fisher has done a REMARKABLE job rebuilding FSU; pretty soon the Noles will be hoisting yet another crystal football to herald its return to the best team in the land. In short, FSU IS BACK!
For all the wonderful things Fisher has accomplished at FSU it astounds me he would actually 1) Start Winston at QB with a loaded team knowing we have to play Clemson and UF on the road where turnovers will be the difference in the game and 2) Not convince Trickett to stay to provide a great backup for when (and he will) Winston struggles. I'm not the biggest Trickett fan but I was a supporter because I knew what kind of team we had coming back along with where our two biggest games were going to be played. I thought Trickett gave FSU the best chance to win those two big games (UF and Clemson) while decreasing the chances of losing a WTF game (like Miami at home or Pitt on the road) as he is not going to be as prone as Winston to making mistakes due to his experience and knowledge of the playbook.
I cannot believe people do not think that this is cause for serious concern and a roll of some pretty serious dice. While I am happy for Winston, FSU has momentum on its side and another 10-11 win season sets up for 2014 nicely. While I understand the rational, I seriously disagree with it. For every Vick, Manziel etc., there are hundreds of red-shirt freshmen QBs that end up playing like the inexperienced freshman that they are. I cannot believe everyone fell for Winston's play-making ability over the experience of getting in the right plays, audibling at the line, checks at the line and calling the right protection.
Nole fans better beware, if I were the opposing coach I would control blitz every down to take away the run game, force him into long while having my non-blitzing LBs sit on the short passes and play zone behind them with a couple of corner blitzes throw in. This season the Noles can go 8-4, 9-3 or at best 10-2. They now have no shot at a NC if one of the big two (OSU and Bama) falters because we will most certainly lose to Clemson and possibly to UF, Miami and / or Pitt.
Not the best decision.
