FSU Season and what to Expect

The season to come is sure to be an interesting one but I would like to take the time to write about the upcoming season and things I believe we should watch out for. I made certain claims about coaching changes that did happen, and I kind pointed to the fact I believe FSU would eventually move to more of a 3-4 defense especially considering, what I had heard about Jimbo wanted to become more multiple on defense and hated how some of his more talented guys was left on the sidelines. So I wanted to talk more of what is expected of the new staff and a couple players.

This season will be a make it or break for a couple of the coaches on this staff and I think that starts with Rick Trickett who we all know his story from bad recruiting but he has the ability coach. I wouldn’t be surprise if this is Rick last season and not because Jimbo would fire his friend but maybe it’s about his time to go, he’s long in the tooth and nice amount of coaches around the country clamoring for that spot. Dawsey is going to have to prove a lot this year we all know he hasn’t produce a draft pick at the position yet or even gain consistent play from that group. Jimbo has taken a step back from that group and I believe he’s going to allow Dawsey to actually have complete control of that group so by the end of the season we will know more about his ability to coach and evaluate the depths of the position. Jimbo has showed more trust to this staff but with that trust come’s accountability and individuals held to a higher standard.

Certain players on this team we expect a lot from but I wanted to touch on certain players. Mario Edwards Jr. who was a #1 recruit when he came to FSU but from what I heard don’t expect to see a Clowney type season or even a double sack season. He’s the type of player who will always finish a season strong because he will play himself in to shape. He also is having a hard time with the new playbook and what it’s asking him to do. While the secondary and linebackers love the defense the d lineman are ask to do a lot of sacrificing and making gaps for blitzing. So something to watch is will Edwards catch on to the new defense and maybe for the first time in his life get in first round type shape and mentally prepare himself to be the playmaker we think he can be when he was recruited.

Then their Karlos and some of the other defensive backs, while they are a talented group, its been said by some of the defensive staff believe they lack the constant physicality needed to play in this defense. I think this will change when all the DB’s are healthy and playing time become scared. In this defense the DB’s most be willing to be more physical than they were ever ask to be in past seasons. Karlos will have to grow into his role; I believe he might the most important player on the defense this year because of what his body type can do for this defense. They are some concerns that he might not be able to mentally, but can he mentality the carry this defense. He will be the different between this defense being just good or elite.
