I'll admit I'm one of the old-timers who has been following FSU football for almost 3 decades. I saw how our defense shocked the ACC when we joined in the early 90's. Back then, we were never subjected to the kind of blatant holding against our DE's that the ACC officiating crews are allowing now. It's even more obvious when we play out of conference, as in bowl games, and we actually get holding calls our way.
Recall that Swofford is a former UNC QB, and was the UNC AD at the time we joined the league. Here is what he recently admitted:
"The other thing that I remember was their defensive ends and linemen. I actually was worried about our quarterback when we played them because they just … it was brutal (laughing). And we were good. We had a very good team that year, actually. But they were something." http://nolesports.tallahassee.com/article/20130727/FSU03/307270031/ACC-s-Swofford-talks-FSU-athletics
In the 90's we did indeed sometimes knock QBs out of games, but legally.
Now, Swofford is the ACC commissioner. He controls the ACC officiating team, and they take their cue from him. He hears the complaints about the holding non-calls. He sees TV commentators talking about holding non-calls and other officiating gaffs against FSU, like flagging aggressive but legal plays. Yet he does nothing about it, year after year.
Is this because he was the AD at a basketball school and still thinks FSU plays too rough? Does he think that he needs to neutralize FSU's advantages for the good of the weaker ACC teams? Do I need to wear a tin foil hat?
What do you think?
