Hey guys - I know a lot of people have been discussing the FSU defense so far this year, so I thought I'd try to take a look back to the early games from 2012 to see if I could draw any meaningful conclusions through only three games. Obviously, I know the team is breaking in new players (losses to draft) and new coaches (Pruitt's scheme) but I think it can still be useful to get a sense for how the team is progressing (or regressing as it may be) from last year.
For reference, the first three games of the 2012 season were against Murray State, Savannah State, and Wake Forest. I think we can probably assume that the 2013 slate is a little tougher (Pitt, Nevada, Bethune) but some of the information may still prove to be valuable as we try to project out how the team will fare in the real games later this year.
In order to answer questions in advance:
- No, this is not adjusted for quality of opponent
- No, this is not adjusted for garbage time
- My intent was to spend less than 30 minutes on this since I don't know how useful any data is this early in the season
- 2012 stats are from cfbstats.com and 2013 stats are from Seminoles.com (cfb hasn't updated for week three yet)
That said, feel free to discuss amongst yourselves. Personally, I'm appalled by the number of first downs the team has been giving up, and particularly its inability to get off the field on 3rd down against pretty week competition so far.
