Florida State football film review: Pitt 2nd quarter

Every week we break down the result of the previous game. Who really played well for the Seminoles against Pitt? Read to find out.

Note: there are certain schematic and tendency things we do not discuss in these reviews out of respect for our sources, the school and coaching staff.

Down/Distance Formation Result Comment
1-10-PITT40 20 gun (15:00) Jameis Winston passed to Kenny Shaw for 21 yards. Not sure if this is a true packaged play or play action, but neither was the Pitt defense. Backers flowed HARD and Kenny Shaw was wide open on the drag. This is Jimbo's offense at its best. Balance combined with checks at the line have the defense completely flummoxed and guys are running wide open.
1-10-PITT19 20 gun (14:36) James Wilder rushed for 15 yards. Flashback to 2012, outside zone from splitbacks. Wilder shows good patience and works off his blockers. Freshman James Wilder runs into the back of Freeman and only gets 5 or 6 yards on this play.
1-0-PITT4 (14:15) PITT was penalized 2 yards. Pretty sure Jameis misses a check on this play. FSU is way outnumbered in the run game and has single coverage on both receivers to the field. Facemask penalty makes it a moot point.
1-0-PITT2 (13:41) Touchdown. Jameis Winston passed to Nick O'Leary for 2 yards. It can perhaps be excused in a goal line situation, but Pitt's backers are incredibly susceptible to play action. O'Leary makes a great adjustment on this ball.
FSU 14   PITT 7,   Plays: 8   Yards: 79   Possession: 04:07.
(13:41) Roberto Aguayo kicked the ball for 62 yards. Lafayette Pitts returned the kick for 17 yards.
1-10-PITT20 3-4 (13:36) James Conner rushed for 5 yards. Pitt still gets the edge on this play but Brooks is at least coming up in run support much faster and limiting the gain.
2-5-PITT25 3-4 (13:04) Tyler Boyd rushed for 20 yards. FSU is lined up properly but Tyler Hunter gets decleated when he comes up in run support. Good lord.
1-10-PITT45 3-4 (12:36) Tom Savage passed to J.P. Holtz for 8 yards. Good read of the play action by Telvin and is just barely too late to break it up. Looks like FSU was disguising coverage with a bail technique.
2-2-FSU47 3-4 (11:55) James Conner rushed for 5 yards. Good example of a hybrid defense. The normal front from a 3-4 is in place, but Mario Edwards Jr is playing strongside OLB and is in a 2 point stance on the line of scrimmage. Is it a 3-4 or 4-3? Semantics. Edwards shows great functional strength in controling his man then getting off the block.
1-10-FSU42 3-4 (11:30) Tom Savage rushed for 1 yard. FSU was penalized 15 yards. Good defense. And while the call was wrong, it was still a poor decision on Telvin's part. QB will get the benefit of the doubt on those every time.
1-10-FSU26 3-4 (11:21) James Conner rushed for no gain. FSU is really defending inside zone very well.
2-10-FSU26 4-2-5 (10:49) Tom Savage passed to Devin Street for 10 yards. Joyner is playing way off Street in the slot, leaving all kinds of room for the slant. Seems upset with himself after the play, so he may not have been aligned correctly.
1-10-FSU16 4-2-5 (10:17) Tom Savage passed incomplete to Devin Street. Safety blitz. You're not going to catch Joyner out twice in a row. This time he is tighter on Street and breaks up the slant.
2-10-FSU16 4-2-5 (10:10) Isaac Bennett rushed for 5 yards. Christian Jones tries to run around a block and takes himself out of the play.
3-5-FSU11 4-2-5 (9:26) Tom Savage passed incomplete to Devin Street. Savage is really antsy in the pocket and that receiver was not remotely open. Brooks stonehands the easy pick.
4-5-FSU11 (9:18) Chris Blewitt made a field goal of 28 yards.
FSU 14   PITT 10,   Plays: 10   Yards: 54   Possession: 04:23. 6.9 yards per play on this drive. Not getting it done.
(9:18) Chris Blewitt kicked the ball for 60 yards. Lamarcus Joyner returned the kick for 17 yards.
1-10-FSU22 11 gun (9:11) Jameis Winston passed to Rashad Greene for 9 yards. If the defense is going to play 10 yards off Rashad Greene, take the free yards.
2-1-FSU31 11 pistol (8:34) Devonta Freeman rushed for 5 yards. Quick dive catches the Pitt DL in a blitz off the edge.
1-10-FSU36 11 gun (8:14) Jameis Winston passed to Rashad Greene for 11 yards. Same play from previous first down.
1-10-FSU47 11 gun (7:59) Jameis Winston passed to Rashad Greene for 8 yards. Same play again.
2-2-PITT45 11 (7:24) FSU was penalized 15 yards. Carter got WHIPPED by Aaron Donald. In his defense Donald timed the snap perfectly. I don't understand how the rule O'Leary violated works. He was definitely inside the tackle box as it was at the snap.
2-17-FSU40 10 gun (6:57) Jameis Winston passed incomplete to Kenny Shaw. Double shakes. Kenny Shaw caught that ball, but Jameis could have thrown it earlier/flatter to avoid it being an issue.
3-17-FSU40 10 gun (6:51) Jameis Winston passed to Rashad Greene for no gain. Scissors concept. Tremendous job hanging in the pocket and throwing an accurate pass while getting hit. Carter got bullrushed right into Winston.
1-10-PITT40 10 gun (6:30) Jameis Winston passed to Rashad Greene for 8 yards. Smash. Shad is all alone on the hitch.
2-2-PITT32 10 gun (5:55) Aaron Donald sacked Jameis Winston for a loss of 7 yards. Smash again. Donald beats Carter with a swim move, but Winston needs to get rid of it instead of trying to scramble here.
3-9-PITT39 10 gun (5:13) Jameis Winston passed to Kelvin Benjamin for 19 yards. Camera angle is too narrow to see the pass pattern, but that's a heck of a throw from Winston. Seeing the middle of the field well. He takes a pretty hard shot after the throw.
1-10-PITT20 21 gun (4:45) Jameis Winston rushed for 2 yards. Some sort of miscommunication here. Winston appears to be looking for the bubble, but the receivers are running double slants.
2-8-PITT18 11 (4:45) James Wilder rushed for 6 yards. Nice run by Wilder on an outside zone play. Stayed patient and found the cutback.
3-2-PITT12 11 gun (3:20) James Wilder rushed for 3 yards. Running to the numbers. Wilder doesn't need much of a crease again.
1-0-PITT9 11 (2:50) James Wilder rushed for 4 yards. Pretty well blocked zone run. Cam Erving doesn't get enough of Donald on the backside cutoff.
2-0-PITT5 11 gun (2:13) Touchdown. Jameis Winston rushed for 5 yards. QB sweep is an automatic check from this formation when the numbers are there.
FSU 21   PITT 10,   Plays: 14   Yards: 63   Possession: 07:05.
(2:13) Roberto Aguayo kicked the ball for 61 yards. Lafayette Pitts returned the kick for 16 yards.
1-10-PITT20 4-2-5 (2:08) Isaac Bennett rushed for 3 yards. Pitt trying to run the clock out, Jimbo taking the timeout to force the punt. Nice aggression.
2-7-PITT23 4-2-5 (1:59) Tom Savage was intercepted. Terrence Brooks returned the interception for no gain. Savage just completely misreads this. Great break on the ball by Brooks. Guess it's just the easy ones he can't catch.
1-10-PITT41 11 gun (1:56) Jameis Winston passed to Devonta Freeman for 2 yards. FSU was penalized 15 yards. Dumb penalty. The guy was way behind the play. FSU needs to study up on obscure blocking penalties as they're clearly a point of emphasis with the ACC this year.
1-23-FSU46 11 gun (1:03) FSU was penalized 5 yards. Looks like the play is signaled in incorrectly as Jameis shrugs in the huddle and Freeman doesn't know where to line up.
1-28-FSU41 10 gun (1:03) Jameis Winston passed to Rashad Greene for 36 yards. 3x1 set with a double post and a drag to the trips side and a deep curl on the single side. Not sure the window is as small as it looked initially. Winston's most remarkable asset is the speed at which he can put a decision into action once he makes it.
1-10-PITT23 10 gun (0:38) Touchdown. Jameis Winston passed to Rashad Greene for 23 yards. Not sure, but this looks like the same play that Benjamin caught on third down on the previous play.
FSU 28   PITT 10,   Plays: 3   Yards: 51   Possession: 01:21. The mistakes that happened on this drive would normally be drive killers. Really, really impressive to overcome those and put it in the end zone.
(0:38) Roberto Aguayo kicked the ball for 64 yards. Tyler Boyd returned the kick for 35 yards. Phenomenal coffin corner kick is wasted by poor coverage.
1-10-PITT36 4-2-5 (0:32) Tom Savage passed to Isaac Bennett for 5 yards. You have 32 seconds, Savage. Incompletions are better than 5 yard passes that don't stop the clock.
2-5-PITT41 4-2-5 (0:08) Tom Savage passed to Isaac Bennett for 4 yards. Savage just wants to get into the locker room. Flushes and dumps it off with nobody near him.
