To no one's surprise Florida State earned a regional berth after their 36th straight season with 40 or more wins. After losing five straight games to end the regular season the Seminoles got hot and swept through the ACC tournament. En route to that conference title the Noles defeated teams with an RPI ranking of 53, 28, 23 and 12 making a strong case for a national seed and home field advantage on the way to Omaha.
The Seminoles are battling a few teams for the last two spots; Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, TCU, Missouri State are also in consideration. Florida State currently leads the country with 19 wins against teams with a RPI in the top 50, Missouri State finished the season with nine, while TCU had only seven. Texas A&M has one of the best records in the country but that is bolstered by 25 out-of-conference wins and their 183rd-ranked OOC strength of schedule could be damaging. Vanderbilt has an outside shot because they play in the best conference in the country and made it to the tournament final, but should they lose to Florida in the final game, they will likely be eliminated from the conversation.
Florida State will not know their fate until Monday at noon when the selection show airs on ESPNU. As always we will keep you updated and provide analysis of the selections.
