Bruce Thorson-US PRESSWIRE
It was a rusty start but a much better Florida State team continued to pressure Rhode Island with runners on base. Eventually the pressure was too much for the Rams and the Noles pulled away in a route.
Florida State jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Rhode Island battled back to 4-2. The Noles then went up 7-2 only to see Leibrandt leave in the sixthwithout recording an out and only a 3 run lead. A Brizuela grandslam later and the Seminoles had a 11-4 lead officially putting the game out of reach. A ninth inning run by URI didn't matter as the Noles won 11-5.
Some takeaways from this game
Leibrandt had some excellent innings, some poor defense extended innings. He looked comfortable and appeared to have good control. No concerns.
Bullpen held strong, Holtman with a strong relief appearence, 2 IP, 7 batters faced only allowing a walk.
Florida State has led the nation in walks the last 3 years, the plate discipline that Mike Martin, Jr. preaches is evident with even the first year players.
Despite back to back two out walks reliever Robby Coles impressed me, batters struggled to pick up the ball out of his hands and had good movement on his pitches.
Mike Martin still does some Mike Martin things. At this point I think he just wants us to drink for the fun of it. With 0 outs and two runners on, one reached via a HBP he allowed Delph to bunt on a 2-0 count.
The newcomers impressed early, freshman DJ Stewart doubled in his first at bat and JUCO transfer Marcus Davis hit a absolute bomb of a homerun over the right field fence in his first at-bat as a Seminole.
Seminoles batters were hit by pitch five times in this game, add 6 walks to that and it doesn't matter all that much that they only had seven hits.
All in all it was a good first game for the Noles, they are by far the superior team and it shows. This was the first time Rhode Island had been able to practice outside it quite some time. Despite the close games last season I still think Florida State should take care of business not problem.
See everyone tomorrow for the 2PM start.
Go Noles
