4 Star Running Back Drew Harris to FSU?

I saw some buzz on Twitter over the weekend suggesting FSU may land the #1 "prep school" running back in the land, and that he might even count toward the 2013 class and enroll this summer.

Drew Harris was a 4 star recruit in 2012 who signed with Virginia Tech.

Can't find anything concrete about why he didn't end up playing in Blacksburg (admittedly not looking too hard) but it appears he wasn't eligible to enroll in college, which probably explains why he didn't enroll in JUCO either, and instead spent last year at a prep school.

It seems Harris is still sorting through his eligibility with the NCAA, but it also appears that his recruiting is open, with FSU gaining serious ground. According to 247Sports, FSU offered him on Saturday, 5/4/2013.

Harris would be a huge get for FSU. He's a superior talent at running back who would also provide much-needed depth. As far as I know, if he passes the NCAA clearinghouse Harris would enter as a freshman with all four years of eligibility.

If anyone out there knows anything about this situation please share.

Report from Fisher's South Florida Booster Visit 5/4/13

Here’s a little report from Jimbo Fisher’s Fort Lauderdale Booster visit last night. Nothing earth shattering to report, but I'm happy to pass on the info. Hopefully I don't ramble on too much, we'll see.

He was brought on stage with Jerry Kutz (from Seminole Boosters) acting as an interviewer. Here are some highlights from the night, as best as I can remember. This is probably out of order and definitely paraphrased, so if anyone was there as well, feel free to correct me or fill in some missing info:

*Started talking about all of the draft picks. Jimbo spoke about how impressive it was, how proud he was of his players and also how it is a great tool to use for future recruits. Even mentioned that he got calls from at least 14 recruits while he was in the green room. Jimbo spoke about people questioning how only 3 picks came from the offensive side of the ball. He reminded everyone that the offense was pretty young last year. There were only 5 draft eligible guys on offense and 3 of them got drafted. Offense was predominantly made up of sophomores with a few seniors and juniors mixed in.

*They then talked about the accomplishments from last year. Jimbo spoke about how important winning the ACC is for his football team. They needed to see what it felt like to win a championship. Spoke about how this team has never felt it and how they all really appreciated being ACC and Orange Bowl champs. Even mentioned how the players would not take off their ACC Championship hats. They just kept wearing them around campus.

* They then moved on to talk about the offense. He spoke about the QB situation briefly. Jimbo mentioned Coker’s ankle injury and how we never really saw his full game this spring and he expects good things from him in the fall, when he’s healthy. He said Winston had a tremendous spring, ate things up, highly intelligent. He’s the "real deal", a very special player, 6’ 4" 225 and makes a ton of plays. Then spoke a bit about how Maguire might have been the most improved player in spring. He’s coming from a wing T offense but he’s picking things up and has a big arm and a lot of ability.

* Receiving group is returning 6 of top seven. Spoke about how Rashad Greene is a very special player and great kid. Spoke about Dent playing well. And then said K Benjamin’s last 8 practices were great. He didn’t want to jinx him, but said the light really came on for him. He’s excited what he can bring.

*Then moved on to the defense. Jimbo spoke about the inside DL guys. Mentioned how even though we lost 2 good players, the guys that return probably made more plays last year. He then rattled off all the names of guys returning at DL and how much talent we have. Spoke about DEnds briefly, nothing really of note to report. Talked about Joyner returning, he called him the Energizer Bunny. Then discussed the other d-backs. Made a point of mentioning Darby and how he expects to see him walk across the stage in New York one day, as well as PJ Williams. Spoke about PJ being a big time player who could walk in NY as well. Then said don’t forget about Hunter, another very talented kid.

*The night then moved on to questions from the crowd. Someone asked if Jameis becomes the starter, will we see more running from him than with EJ last year, and would we see different formations like the pistol: Jimbo said something that I found interesting here. He said that this year is different because both Coker and Winston are similar players in that both can run the ball really well. So it is easier for him to game plan. He then said, last year EJ’s back-up was not as good a runner, so he had to game plan with that in mind. I’m sure I’m paraphrasing here, but I took it to mean if he spent the whole week practicing plays that take advantage of EJ’s legs and then EJ gets hurt, they would not be prepared when Tricket came in.

*Here’s another question/answer that I thought was interesting. He was asked about losing 2 strong South Florida recruiters (Gran and Coley) and replacing them with guys who are not as familiar with the area. Does he have a plan for South Florida? He said we need to remember there is someone on staff who spent his entire career recruiting South Florida. And that was Jimbo Fisher. He said he has over 20 years experience recruiting South Florida and it will always be a place that they will prioritize. Also spoke about Sunseri’s experience here.

Well that is all I can think of off the top of my head. Needless to say the Kool-aid was flowing freely last night and we were all gulping it down.

Ok, let's crowd-source this...ACC divisions must be fixed

Now that the ACC GOR has pretty much put an end to speculation about the ACC's future member lineup, it's time for the ACC to put all it's focus on maximizing revenue and improving its football brand. One of the most daunting tasks ahead of the ACC is improving on the current divisional allignment.

For FSU fans, divisional allignment usually revolves around one issue...the Georgia Tech game. It has never sit right with Noles that it rarely plays it's closest geographic rival, and the series had produced a lot of memorable moments prior to the divisional allignment. And some since.

But the FSU-GT situation is not THE problem, it's only a symbol of the problem. The current 14-team ACC allignment simply mandates too many sub-par or unappealing matchups be played every year, and too many valuable matchups to take place twice every twelve years. FSU-GT is the most visible to us, but it affects everyone.

Here are some of the matches that the ACC gets EVERY SINGLE YEAR:

BC-Clemson

BC-FSU

BC-NCSU

BC-WF

CU-SU

FSU-NCSU

FSU-SU

FSU-WF

NCSU-SU

SU-WF

VT-Duke

GT-Pitt

GT-UVA

GT-Duke

UM-UVA

UM-UNC

UM-Duke

UVA-Pitt

UNC-Pitt

Pitt-Duke

Now, that's not to say none of those will be good games, or that they will never be important games. All I'm saying is that there are at least 20 games that don't match up traditional opponents, close geographic partners, or traditional football powers. The ACC has too many games that are played every year that don't move the needle for fans or TV.

To make it worse, these are games that we will now see only twice every 12 years:

BC-Miami (History)

BC-Pitt (History/Geography)

Clemson-VT (Big Game)

Clemson-Miami (Big Game)

Clemson-UNC (History/Potential Big Game/Geography)

Clemson-Duke (Geography)

FSU - GT (History/Geography/Potential Big Game)

FSU - UNC (Potential Big Game)

FSU - VT (Big Game)

Louisville - VT (Geography. Potential Big Game)

Louisville - Pitt (History)

Louisville - UNC (Geography, Potential Big Game)

NCSU - Duke (Geography)

SU - VT (History)

SU - Miami (History)

WF - UNC (History, Geography)

Now, you can take issue with how I've qualified them, and you could make the case that some games on the first list are the equal of games on the second list. That's not the point...even if the games are equal value, it just isn't justifiable to play one every year, and another twice a decade.

Obviously, the SEC has the same mathematical problem, but it's not as bad due to the tight geographic nature of the conference and the fact that for the most part, even if you are "missing" a big game (Georgia-Alabama) it's replacement is often pretty darn good (UGA-USC). While some exist of course, there are just many fewer matchups that can't be justified by history, geography or Big Game potential. And the SEC isn't trying to improve it's football or increase it's appeal or drive up attendance like the ACC is.

So what is the solution? None that are a no-brainer. Here are the ones that I sometimes think about or hear discussed, with the pros/cons as I see them:

A) Switch GT and Louisville

Pros: Makes FSU fans happy

Cons: Does nothing for anyone else, possibly including GT who don't seem to care as much as we do. Doesn't solve the main problem at all.

2) Go to a 9-game conference schedule

Pros: Would allow the cross-division games to cycle through twice as quickly. B1G and PAC, two pretty well-run conferences, go this way.

Cons: Losing a home game is financially devastating for schools like FSU and Clemson, who the ACC needs to be in top form. Virtually impossible to accomodate any premier OOC games because four schools have untouchable OOC rivals, and five will be committed to play ND every year. The SEC, the most successful conference, has resisted this for a reason.

D) Go to a straight up North/South allignment

Pros: Hits a much higher percentage of geographically-attractive matchups, which is important for an attendance-challenged conference. Creates more "Big Games" in the South division. The B1G decided to go this way, after initially trying ACC-style divisions, even at the expense of balance.

Cons: Potentially woefully unbalanced, with the bulk of the ACC's modern national champs and traditional football schools and recruiting powers in the south. Would severely cut back the desparately needed exposure of the North schools to the recruiting hotbeds of the South.

Raycom) Go straight up North/South, eliminate the crossover game

Pros: Same as above, plus cycle through the opposite division twice as fast

Cons: Same as above, although the Southern exposure aspect could be slightly improved with two rotating crossover games

Chad Swofford) Expand with two more teams (UCONN/CINCI), set up pod scheduling

Pros: We could limit the "must play" games to three per school, which could cycle through the matchups much, much faster. Even adding two more "unnattractive" opponents, pod scheduling would not necessarilly mean schedules get worse. Conference semifinals at home stadiums could generate $. If the ACC Network can get coverage in every state, could add revenue.

Cons: Never been done successfully. Would need NCAA rules changes to do it (and probably wouldn't get support from other conferences stuck below 16). Would likely add two more football also-rans, something the ACC already has a corner on. Unless the ACC Network is successful beyond any reasonable projections, or ESPN REALLY gets behind this plan, difficult to see how adding two programs of this stature doesn't reduce per-team payout.

As you can see, none of these are a slam dunk. So, ACC big brains (that is what this conference is supposed to be known for, right?) there has to be a way that works better than this.

Perhaps, it is time to think well outside the box. Despite Swofford's recent triumphs, the ACC has never shown itself to be a thought leader in college football, basically chasing divisional allignment and conference networks only after the trail had been blazed.

Maybe this is the time. Maybe Tomahawk Nation is where it starts. Let's talk about some creative solutions, or variations on the options I've listed.

Lonnie Pryor would make an excellent tailback

I'm not sure what scared off NFL scouts and coaches from drafting LP but if they had opened up their minds a bit maybe they could have seen the value for him at tailback. He came to FSU as a tailback, has great vision, excellent hands, can obviously block, and has good size. Why not draft him to play tailback, his size is perfect for an NFL tailback, plus you would get great pass protection from him, it's a no brainer. I should be a friggen NFL GM.

Is there any bowl the Noles can't play in?

Some fan-boys and bloggers think that the contracts between the Pac-12 and Big Ten have shut the ACC out of the Rose bowl, and that the SEC / Big XII contract has shut us out of the Sugar and Cotton bowls, too... well, here's something to think about: because of the rotation of the bowls for semi-final games and the rule they put in place stating that no #3 or #4 seed should ever have home field advantage over a #1 or #2 (if it's possible to avoid it), that creates some interesting possibilities. Suffice it to say that it's possible for Florida State (or any ACC team who can finish in the top 10 or so) to play in ANY one of the "playoff" bowls. Hey, that might even be a good goal to achieve by 2025/26!

Here is the article I posted on my blog:

http://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2013/04/acc-teams-in-rose-bowl-etc.html

2013 NFL Draft Breakdown by College

I couldn't easily find an overall breakdown by college (i.e. which college teams were the first to reach 2, 3, 4, etc. players drafted), so I made one.

Here is the sheet

So, which team had the best draft? Which teams made it to each number of players drafted first and when? Here are my tallies for the first five teams to reach each mark:

1 Player: Central Michigan (1), Texas A&M (2), Oregon (3), Oklahoma (4), BYU (5)

2 Players: Alabama (10), LSU (18), Oregon (20), Florida State (24), North Carolina (28)

3 Players: Alabama (11), Florida State (25), North Carolina (37), LSU (45), Oregon (46)

4 Players: Florida State (40), Alabama (61), LSU (67), Georgia (84), Florida (85)

5 Players: Florida State (42), LSU (69), Alabama (99), Florida (104), Georgia (134)

6 Players: LSU (95), Alabama (113), Florida State (154), Georgia (161), Florida (164)

7 Players: Alabama (137), LSU (138), Florida State (162), Florida (166), Georgia (188)

8 Players: LSU (142), Alabama (157), Florida (169), Florida State (177), Georgia (191)

9 Players: Florida State (180), LSU (194), Alabama (211)

10 Players: Florida State (206)

11 Players: Florida State (229)

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

EJ has some crow to serve you... lol

I know a lot of people on here have a sour taste in their mouths because they just couldn't imagine EJ Manuel in the 1st round. I mean no way he's going before Geno Smith. lol All that talk about he's an undrafted Free Agent Pick or 5-7th round at best non-sense has really came around full circle huh??? I've been trying to tell you that every QB in this draft has questions but EJ was the best QB in the entire draft. If their were any questions about EJ's abilities as a leader or person or any other negative critique that has been repeated a million times to no end on this site; then they would've found it because they surely found it w/ Geno Smith.

EJ did exactly what Ponder did when he was drafted. He perforemd like hell during the pre-draft months and sold himself better than any other QB sold themselves. The ability to do that should speak volumes about a person and yet some people can't see that because they want to focus on the "spin sack" as the end all be all or that he didn't run enough. I tried to tell you all that the NFL evaluation process is a lot more complex than the evaluations of the arm-chair experts that we all are. The fact that Wilson and Kaepernick were such huge successes last season automatically makes EJ the most viable QB prospect in this years draft. I could go on and on and on but at the end of the day; whether you believe he'll fail (he won't) or succeed doesn't matter. He's a 1st round QB today on forward so hate on it and live with it. Hopefully all the naysayers can comeback for their humble pie because I truly would like to know how does it taste??? lol!!!
I know a lot of people on here have a sour taste in their mouths because they just couldn't imagine EJ Manuel in the 1st round.
The NFL Draft and THE DECISION

First let me say congrats to all the Noles that were selected in the first round. Jimbo was a very proud papa this night and well he should have been. I once heard someone say on this site that you can judge the health of your program by the number of guys it puts in the NFL, well Nole Nation, by that metric FSU is doing very very well. Saban's smug facial look was only matched by Fisher's delighted facial look of having THREE Noles in the first round. Can FSU go toe to toe with mighty Bama on the field and on the recruiting trail? The answer is if they can't then they are THAT much away. Fisher has done a REMARKABLE job rebuilding FSU; pretty soon the Noles will be hoisting yet another crystal football to herald its return to the best team in the land. In short, FSU IS BACK!

For all the wonderful things Fisher has accomplished at FSU it astounds me he would actually 1) Start Winston at QB with a loaded team knowing we have to play Clemson and UF on the road where turnovers will be the difference in the game and 2) Not convince Trickett to stay to provide a great backup for when (and he will) Winston struggles. I'm not the biggest Trickett fan but I was a supporter because I knew what kind of team we had coming back along with where our two biggest games were going to be played. I thought Trickett gave FSU the best chance to win those two big games (UF and Clemson) while decreasing the chances of losing a WTF game (like Miami at home or Pitt on the road) as he is not going to be as prone as Winston to making mistakes due to his experience and knowledge of the playbook.

I cannot believe people do not think that this is cause for serious concern and a roll of some pretty serious dice. While I am happy for Winston, FSU has momentum on its side and another 10-11 win season sets up for 2014 nicely. While I understand the rational, I seriously disagree with it. For every Vick, Manziel etc., there are hundreds of red-shirt freshmen QBs that end up playing like the inexperienced freshman that they are. I cannot believe everyone fell for Winston's play-making ability over the experience of getting in the right plays, audibling at the line, checks at the line and calling the right protection.

Nole fans better beware, if I were the opposing coach I would control blitz every down to take away the run game, force him into long while having my non-blitzing LBs sit on the short passes and play zone behind them with a couple of corner blitzes throw in. This season the Noles can go 8-4, 9-3 or at best 10-2. They now have no shot at a NC if one of the big two (OSU and Bama) falters because we will most certainly lose to Clemson and possibly to UF, Miami and / or Pitt.

Not the best decision.

The State of Florida's Big Three & the NFL

With NFL Draft Day almost upon us I thought it would be good to dive into some numbers related to our beloved Seminoles and our two in-state rivals, Florida and Miami.

Since 1980 Florida State has sent 164 players to the NFL draft. Many household names for Florida State and college football fans alike soon became NFL superstars. Names like Deion Sanders, Warrick Dunn, LeRoy Butler, Derrick Brooks and Sebastian Janikowski represented elite talent and the Florida State pedigree. Even in the down years, FSU turned out NFL talent that produced at the highest level.

Of course we want to pull for our Noles at the next level, but the importance to the program is in the fact that our staff can get players to the next level. Showcasing your NFL talent is every bit as important as pushing your depth chart, support structure and campus scenery to recruits every cycle. That being said, there’s the battle to load the roster, the battle on the gridiron and the battle of who’s the king of the NFL in the state of Florida. Miami has been considered "NFL U" for a long time, and for good reason. The Canes produced elite NFL talent for three decades now. Will they continue to carry the torch? Can Florida State parlay Jimbo Fisher’s top tier recruiting classes into stocked NFL draft classes? Is Timmy Tebow going to single handedly crown UF King of the NFL? Let’s take a peek at some numbers, shall we?

First, some guidelines for the numbers I pulled. I’ve focused on all active (on an NFL roster) NFL players from Florida, Florida State and Miami. I’ve also used ESPN’s NFL experience counts (some of which seemed suspect). I also used the latest depth chart I could find to determine starting roles, I imagine there are some that can be argued as starting at their position.

Let’s kick it off with some high level break downs:

The Florida Gators head into the 2013 NFL Draft with 28 active NFL players and a total of 113 years of league experience. 22 of those 28 active players were taken in the draft at an average round of 2.91. The oldest Gator in the NFL is Rex Grossman (32 years old, first round of the 2003 draft class). The Gators have six 23 year olds in the NFL, Maurkice Pouncey and Aaron Hernandez hailing from the stacked 2010 draft class. UF currently has six undrafted free agents in the NFL, all coming from 2010 or later. According to my depth chart scouring, the Gators currently have 12 starters in the NFL and 16 reserves.

Florida State is second with 31 active NFL players, racking up a total of 167 years of league experience. 24 of those 31 NFL’ers were draft picks, with an average round of 3.08. The elder Nole is fan favorite Sebastian Janikowski, First Round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft (35 years old). Packer reserve tackle Andrew Datko is your youngest Seminole at 22 years old, (UDFA, 2012). Florida State has seven undrafted free agents in the NFL, spread from 2009-2012. The Noles currently have 18 NFL starters and 13 reserves.

NFL U, Miami, currently has 45 active NFL players for a staggering 227 years of league experience. 35 of those 45 were drafted by NFL teams at an average round of 2.83. The senior NFL Cane is Reggie Wayne, drafted in the first round of the 2001 draft (34 years old). Lamar Miller is the youngest Cane at 22 years old (4th round of the 2012 draft). Miami has ten undrafted free agents in the NFL, with six coming from the 2012 crop of Canes. 19 Canes call themselves NFL starters, leaving the remaining 26 as reserves.

Draft Results:

Miami is the current king of the first round, with 13 active first round picks. Miami hasn’t had a first round pick since 2008 and nine of those first round picks are 30+ years old. Florida State sits with nine active first round picks, with the last coming in 2011. Seven of those nine players are under 30 years old. Florida has seven first round picks, the most recent coming in 2011. Only one of those first round Gators is over 30 years old.

Since 2010, Miami has sent 17 players to the NFL via the draft (average round: 3.9). Florida has sent 15 players to the NFL via draft (average round: 3). Florida State has sent nine players to the NFL via draft (average round: 4.4).

Seeing the draft trends, I would say Florida holds the edge as top recent program for NFL talent thanks largely in part to the 2010 class and what Urban Meyer was able to do while at UF. Miami is still sending players to the NFL, but they seem to be trending down. Florida State saw a significant dip during the lost decade, only producing a handful of NFL draft picks from 2007-2010.

Contributors:

UF’s 12 NFL starters are all sub-30 years old, with six coming from the 2010 class. Florida State’s 18 starters range from 23 to 35, with 13 being younger than 30. Miami’s 19 starters range from 24-34, with 11 of those 19 being 30+ years old.

Is Miami still NFL U?

I would probably say yes, but not for long. If I had to guess, I would say that term is going to get retired alongside the real Orange Bowl within the next three years. Miami is going to see a mass exodus of NFL contributors very soon, and I just don’t see the Canes producing massive draft classes with NFL contributors over the next few years. Florida State is about to do themselves a big service by potentially sending 10 kids to the NFL this weekend. Are they all going to be Pro Bowlers? No, but it’s going to be a big recruiting boost in a talent rich state. That leaves Florida. Corch Erving Meyers really did Coach Boom and the Gators a service in stocking the NFL with some very talented athletes before the changing of the guard. Can Muschamp maintain the pipeline? I believe he can.

That leaves UF as the primary competition pitching the best path to the NFL to blue chip recruits. As far as bragging rights, I think FSU is in a good position going forward and Miami fans will soon have to break out some older copies of Madden to show off their prized NFL talent.

With NFL Draft Day almost upon us I thought it would be good to dive into some numbers related to our beloved Seminoles and our two in-state rivals, Florida and Miami.

Breaking down FSU O-line recruiting for 2014

A pretty in-depth breakdown of FSU O-line recruiting for the 2014 cycle, including a complete listing of every player offered so far and a blurb as well as ratings for each one.

Rick Trickett has always preferred to offer kids late in their career and after seeing Junior film. The issue with this is that a lot of times, colleges have already been able to establish good relationships with kids and FSU enters late in the game. It can also be argued that Trickett has had too narrow a window of requirements in his OL which has led to a smaller crop of offers. Thirty-three total offers went out in the 2013 recruiting cycle. So far in the 2014 cycle 37 offers have already gone out to OL. By comparision here's a look at other southeastern teams OL offers:

Alabama - 25

Auburn - 10

Clemson - 11

Florida - 19

Georgia - 13

Georgia Tech - 13

LSU - 9

Miami - 13

Ole Miss - 19

Miss State - 16

UNC - 16

As you can see, Florida State is sending out OL offers at a pace that no other team around is doing. It's not just to anyone either as the majority of the FSU offers are to 4-Star or better rated players. Below is a list of everyone that has been offered to date.

2013 Offense vs. 2012 Offense

I know I’m going to be in the minority with this statement and it has underpinnings of blue-sky thinking but next year’s offense will be better than the 2012 product. The gap will be noticeable. We improve at every position group with the possible exception of QB. Winston vs. Manuel is not complete downgrade either. EJ was a red-shirt senior but his game didn’t have the elements of a red-shirt senior. Last year, he would run hot and cold plus seem to still have a tough time reading the safety or being aggressive enough. In addition, he had a tough time throwing from under center. Winston during spring game had a better showcase of his skills then what EJ offered last year. Plus he should have a significantly better run game then EJ had last year. The running game will benefit from a more seasoned offensive line and the development of Wilder. In addition, if we knew EJ didn’t want to run the read-option you have to think opposing coaches saw it as well.
Next year’s offense I think will be based on a heavy dose of middle zone running to open up the lanes outside for WR screens and deep balls. We all seem to forget both Matius and Jackson were true sophomores last year while Erving was just starting his OL career. Lastly, you cannot underestimate the advantage having more experienced eyes in the coaches’ sky box offers. Jimbo had a tough time making half time adjustment and I feel part of that issue was Coley and company lack of insight into what the opposing team was doing on defense. Lastly, Sunseri says Pruitt sees things that most folks simply don’t see.
